Re: [RBW] Velocity Rims, Again

2013-11-06 Thread Steven Frederick
I don't think the A23 is an official offering that they (Velocity) are
planning to stock. Longleaf (and now Boulder, evidently) special ordered a
batch. I assume there's a minimum number needed to make that happen.

FWIW, I also have some more recent Synergy rims that are very true to size
and nicely made. Came from the U.S. plant, though whether that's why
they're better or it's just that Velocity retooled in response to
undersized rim complaints is an open question...

[RBW] Re: Velocity Rims, Again

2013-11-06 Thread Michael Hechmer
Given the great adjustability of modern brake pads, I find it difficult to
believe that a canti couldn't be squared to the rim. And, even if it was
initially not square I would expect it to wear toward a flat connection,
not the reverse. It is also hard to understand why Velocity would design
such a rim, given that cantis remain the most popular choice for wide tire
applications, way more than side pulls for sure.

Now, if only they could get the price down to something much more
affordable. Is the hi price being driven by the extra polishing? Why
polish something that runs 40 mm from the road?

they are parallel, as they should be. So they work as well with any brake
type as most other rims. The aero shape is below the brake track, and
does not affect braking in any way. It's interesting that while there are
so many wonderful 650B tires available, few well-designed 650B rims are
available today. Without giving too much away, the Velocity A23 appears to
 solve that problem, finally.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Rims, Again

2013-11-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
Given that the current A23 has parallel sidewalls, it doesn't matter
whether or not I was right claiming that my A23s a couple years ago were
parallel or not. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that I was simply
wrong about it. The only thing I'll point out to the why would they do
that? question is that Velocity did not design this rim for wide tire
applications and cantilever brakes. Velocity designed this rim for 700c
road bikes which mainly have caliper brakes. They only agreed to
manufacture some of the A23 extrusion in 650B when they were paid to do so
by Longleaf and Boulder. There have been plenty of rims out there with
non-parallel sidewalls in the past, but virtually all rim-brake rims today
are parallel and that's a good thing.

Regarding price, the 700c version seems to go for ~$55 - $60 online from
discounters. Normal retailers are in the $70 range. Longleaf sells the
non-polished 650B A23 for $80 and Boulder sells the polished ones for $99.
If Velocity did in fact make it a standard offering, then hopefully the
volumes would get it down approaching the price of the 700c ones, or at
least we'd be able to buy a non-polished one for around $75-$80 per rim.

On Wednesday, November 6, 2013 5:05:26 AM UTC-8, Michael Hechmer wrote:

Given the great adjustability of modern brake pads, I find it difficult to
believe that a canti couldn't be squared to the rim. And, even if it was
initially not square I would expect it to wear toward a flat connection,
not the reverse. It is also hard to understand why Velocity would design
such a rim, given that cantis remain the most popular choice for wide tire
applications, way more than side pulls for sure.

Now, if only they could get the price down to something much more
affordable. Is the hi price being driven by the extra polishing? Why
polish something that runs 40 mm from the road?

I read this thread with interest, as I am putting the finishing touches
on the Winter issue of *Bicycle Quarterly*. This issue includes a test
of the 650B Velocity A23 rims. I checked the brake tracks of our samples,
and they are parallel, as they should be. So they work as well with any
brake type as most other rims. The aero shape is below the brake track,
and does not affect braking in any way. It's interesting that while there
are so many wonderful 650B tires available, few well-designed 650B rims are
available today. Without giving too much away, the Velocity A23 appears to
 solve that problem, finally.

OK, so I have discovered that I really prefer a wider stance width,

I have some 1/2 BMX pedals with 9/16ths adaptors and that seems to spread
things out pretty nicely to my liking on my Paul Taylor custom. On that
bike it's using Ultegra cranks, so I'm not sure what the starting Q factor
is there but I suppose I could rotate the left crank around and measure.
But anyway I was recently able to ride a 200K brevet with the least amount
of knee pain that I have had in probably 5 years.

However, my Paul Taylor is entirely unsuitable overall for anything beyond
200K brevets, and is really questionable even for those. It's pretty
stretched out, which is great for going faster but not so great for
comfort. My upper body ached at the end of the 200K.

The bike I want to use for this riding is my Rivendell. On a recent ride
on the Riv with flat pedals my feet were wanting to be halfway off the
outside of the pedals. I have thought of a new crankset to fix these
issues. However, I decided I would like to try to salvage my relationship
with my TA Carmina triple. Other than being too narrow, I like the
50-38-26 rings that it has and it looks reasonably nice to boot. Plus,
they're already on the bike and I'd rather not go through the trial and
error involved with trying a new crankset. Not to mention, the Carmina was
expensive and the money was already sunk years ago.

I found something online called Kneesavers which is a spacer that goes
between the crank and the pedal and comes in a 20mm, 25mm and 30mm width.
But they are $45.00. That seems a little unreasonable for a piece of
stainless steel that doesn't even contain any bearings.

Any other options out there to add a couple/few centimeters of width to
 one's pedal stance?

[RBW] Re: Catalogue

2013-11-06 Thread BSWP
I asked for one with an order (new sage mocky, most excellent shirt!) and
there it was, so I have something to pore over for a few weeks. Love the
ligatures, but not sure what the bold font on first three characters in
each sentence is all about.

[RBW] Nitto M-12 Rack Mounting on Atlantis

2013-11-06 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Anyone done this lately? I just got my rack and did a quick fit-up,
appears it will need some bending to make it work. Is there some
conventional wisdom on whether to bend at the fork crown bolt or the canti
stud arms? My gut is to bend the arms not the crown bolt but it is
possible that both will require adjustment.

Thanks in advance!

[RBW] FS: Pair of Jack Brown Green tires, less than 50 miles

2013-11-06 Thread Doug Way

Hi Rivsters:

I have a pair of Jack Brown Green (700C x 33.3 mm) tires for sale. They
were mounted once and ridden less than 50 miles. Happy to provide
pictures upon request.

Lots of info on the Riv web site about these tires:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t100-g.htm

Asking $85 for the pair shipped within the USA by USPS Priority Mail.
Payment by Paypal please.

PS: The tires are GREAT. The reason I'm selling them is that I ordered
a beautiful, retro Bianchi wool jersey from the UK. The current
exchange rate is bad so the price is A LOT more than I told my wife
s the tires have to go to make up the difference.

Thanks,
Doug Way

Specialized makes some nice stainless steel ones... unfortunately they're
equally expensive at $40. I have them on two bikes (the third has pedals

things out pretty nicely to my liking on my Paul Taylor custom. On that
bike it's using Ultegra cranks, so I'm not sure what the starting Q factor
is there but I suppose I could rotate the left crank around and measure.

[RBW] Ride report: Tuesday after dark in Pittsburgh

2013-11-06 Thread ascpgh
The erstwhile group gathered at the standard coffee shop start and headed
out on a warm feeling from various forms of caffeination. We headed south
on Highland through East Liberty and across the brand new busway/Amtrak
bridge on Highland. Nicely done, with obvious design props to pedestrians
and cyclists. Through west Shadyside on Ellsworth to Neville and down into
the darkness of Panther Hollow and the river level riding. Here along the
rivers are the most useful byways for bicycles; direct, level,
car-free routes to downtown.

Besides bridges, there are reasons to cross the rivers. We go again to the
Southside for the lights, the activity, the climbs and the views.
Immediately off the foot of the Hot metal Bridge across the Monongahela
River we take the river trail to 18th street. On 18th we cross from
Southside flats to the slopes right at a classic set of city steps;
staircases following the linear path of a road drawn on a map whose
steepness exceeds the engineers' ability to build a street and instead
becomes a concrete staircase, many keeping the street name for their
ascent.

On top of the high ground south of the Mon River we stop for a bit at a
monastery with a view, ascend an alley and plod through Allentown dodging
the trolley rails, ever seeking higher ground. We turn onto Virginia Avenue
and time a few stoplights from steeply above so that we bomb down the hill
to the green lights at intersections with bigger, busier roads, and carry
our inertia up the subsequent hills. The top of the last one affords us a
right turn and in two blocks we emerge on Grandview Avenue, high across
from downtown Pittsburgh. Several sights and photo ops distract. Our
elevator this evening will be Sycamore Road. A nasty, twisting steepness
once used against pro riders in the Thrift Drug Classic, including
Armstrong. We do what they couldn't however, we descend it in the dark. It
throws twists beyond imagination, an uncertain surface and periods of
elevation loss that combine to disorient until we get close enough to other
lights to gain an ambient generalization of the roadway.

Back to reality, or river level, we cross from Station Square to downtown
on the Smithfield Street Bridge and merge onto the Eliza Furnace (Jail)
trail to move in the dark towards Panther Hollow again. Once in the cool
quiet of the Hollow we are sure we hear a train coming. Sort of like one of
those Halloween stories but this one actually had three headlights and
caught up to us just before our turn through a lower campus CMU garage.
Seriously, a train crossing Neville Street at 8:30 pm?

The CMU campus is a wonderland with it's LED-lit Pausch Bridge and the
Santa's workshop garages on the bottom of the building, where I snapped a
picture of a driverless Suburban in the build phase. It shared hanger space
with a couple of buggy-like rigs destined for much more austere environs
than this campus or planet.

Back up in the neighborhoods, on the high ground, we trace our paths back
to our start and another installation of a post ride gathering. Fast adieus
following. I had a 4 am wake up and some sweet sleep to enjoy before then.
As always, an enjoyable evening in the saddle seeing what is always around
us in a different light, uh, rather absence of light. Again in a week!

[RBW] Re: Kneesavers, is there a more reasonable alternative?

2013-11-06 Thread Rod Holland
I've used Knee Savers in a couple of sizes on two bikes, together with Grip
Kings. Aside from the fact that I no longer have the dollars spent on them,
I'm pretty happy with the results. Given my anatomy (shoe size and
turn-out), I wouldn't be able to use the Grip Kings otherwise.

Excellent, thanks Kevin.

OK, so I have discovered that I really prefer a wider stance width,
q-factor, and so forth. I used to drink the kool-aid on the narrow
q-factor but now I realize it doesn't work with my body.

I have some 1/2 BMX pedals with 9/16ths adaptors and that seems to
spread things out pretty nicely to my liking on my Paul Taylor custom. On
that bike it's using Ultegra cranks, so I'm not sure what the starting Q
factor is there but I suppose I could rotate the left crank around and
measure. But anyway I was recently able to ride a 200K brevet with the
least amount of knee pain that I have had in probably 5 years.

However, my Paul Taylor is entirely unsuitable overall for anything
beyond 200K brevets, and is really questionable even for those. It's
pretty stretched out, which is great for going faster but not so great for

 -Jim

Re: [RBW] Crazy-priced Riv water bottles on ebay

2013-11-06 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I just checked the Wayback machine and the bottle was $4 in July, 2002.
Even at $72 that's 18 times the price in just 11 years. Anyone want to buy
my Quickbeam, another item now unavailable, for $28,800? I paid more than
the original $1600 for mine as they had no complete builds when I got mine
so you are actually going to be getting a great deal - after all it's newer
than that water bottle. In fact, I'll tell you what...you buy it tonight
and I'll knock off 28%, just like the bottle, and give it to you for
$20,736 WITH FREE SHIPPING, even if you live in CONUS (I live in Hawaii but
just this once I'll ship to CONUS).

Aloha!

Bob
