I did some digging and found Amazon listing Goods4salez as a storefront (meaning known to them and doing commerce via them) but said the storefront was unavailable at this time. [RBW] Re: Surly-Riv-rivalry?
Both brands (companies, philosophies, products) are loved in our family. I bought my first Rivendell product in 2000, my first bike in 2002 (63cm Romulus), and have basically kept everything in house with zero degradation in utility ever since. I bought my first Surly bike for my son (42cm LHT) on his 8th birthday, a bike which has since been passed down to his younger brother while the older one rides a 55cm CrossCheck. On Monday of this week my now 5' 4-all-legs 13 year old rode off to school on my 61cm Bleriot / Xtracycle, trumpet on one side, giant Duluth pack, locks, rain gear and whatnot on the other, with lights and reflecties everywhere. It's his now, which was always the plan. Remarkably, it fits him fine. He straddles the top tube with feet flat in PF Flyers, and with '86 Suntour XC stem, bars, and shifters, the each is perfect. He looks great on it, and he's proud to have it. Anyway, Surly provided a great way for a kid who wanted to really ride to move into a quality bike at a fair stretchable price point at an early age. 6 years ago the options were really limited for kids or small adults, and to have a 42cm frame available was a big deal to me, and the price was value-justified. Making a market commitment like that is a hard thing to do for any company, and if the Rivendell design philosophy nudged Surly toward a not-dumb ethos, stretching the range of frame sizes to intersect with the '24 inch wheel kid-bike options was definitely a not-dumb move, and one that Surly, with their not-lugs approach was uniquely positioned to consider and execute. That LHT offered everything that an Atlantis from a capability perspective, and though the Rivendell kids bike comes up on this forum every once in a while, making one would probably force a not-lugs exception to make it feasible, and selling them would be a not-profitable endeavor, or so I suspect. We've enjoyed years of utility, transport, and just plain fun on Surly and Rivendell bikes, and I have two kids who can work on their machines, lock them properly, ride them safely and effectively on Seattle's streets, and who understand that bicycles are fun and useful. Hi Ann and all I am a big fan of DeFeet Woolie Boolies. Musa. 70% merino wo0l, 15% Lycra and 15% something else...$17.50 Cdn at MEC, so likely cheaper in the states. I've been wearing DeFeet wool socks since about 2007...and using these Woolie Boolies since late 2011. Tough, durable, luxuriously soft, nice cushioning. They have various weights so the lighter weights are great for summer. The heavier weight ones are warm enough to walk 5.5 km or so home from work with Patagonia light trail shoes in Winnipeg bitterly cold winters and arrive home with warm feet. Course, my feet get cold if I'm standing around waiting for a bus, but these are terrific socks, and they're really durable. And I just wash them and dry them with my other dark stuff and haven't had a problem http://www.mec.ca/product/4016-465/defeet-woolie-boolie-sock-unisex/ Stay warm :) Ryan in Winnipeg On Thursday, December 12, 2013 12:33:40 PM UTC-6, Anne Paulson wrote: A few years ago, Rivendell sold great short wool socks, made by Wilderness Wear. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/as4.htm I bought five pairs. Rivendell no longer sells them, it looks like Wilderness Wear doesn't even make them anymore, and anyway Wilderness Wear is in Australia and I'm in California. Does anyone know of another short wool sock that would be similar? Lots of wool, not too much lycra? The Wilderness Wear sock has terry loops in the inside, which makes them good for hiking too. [RBW] Re: Good compromise between a Marathon and a Hetre? Is it the Soma Xpress 650b?
I've ridden the Soma B-lines, the version that has no flat protection, for about 1000 miles of randonneuring and then they went to my wife who has ridden them for probably about 2000 miles of commuting. Between us we've had one flat (in the rain, of course). They are a fine tire but definitely not as nice as Hetre's for long distance. Re: [RBW] Re: Which bike gets the winter tires?
This is exactly what I encountered yesterday, Steve: Clear trails, except for pitted, rutted ice on the bridges by DCA. I made it through on my Sam Hillborne's 35mm Delta Cruisers, but it was pretty sketchy in the morning and required a bit of care and skill. By the time I returned in the evening there were clear paths melted through. When those spots under the bridges get black ice, they can be treacherous - just ask my wife, who was a very good sport the first time she rode to my place when we were dating! My normal snow solution has been to use the aluminum CX bike (Trek XO1) that was my exclusive commuter, pre-Sam, with studded Kenda Klondikes (700x35). My theory was the opposite of NickBull's: because the roads clear up so fast, I got tires without spikes right down the middle, but the two rows do come into play right away as soon as the road or the bike tips a bit. They're still quite noisy on the asphalt. I haven't slipped on smooth ice with the Klondikes, just loose slippery snow and the occasional awkwardly frozen rut/footprint. When I'm on a trail and everything's covered in snow I ride just off to the side where there aren't any footprints. After I got my Sam Hillborne last year, I barely rode my Trek all winter unless I really needed the studs - having my Sam's dynamo lighting in the dark winter nights (I'm often riding from Alexandria to DC after 10pm, and had a 3am a couple of weeks ago) overrode any concerns about riding steel in the snow and salt. Unless Santa brings a dynamo hub for the Trek, It'll likely stay that way. -John (Capitol Hill) On Wednesday, December 11, 2013 2:15:36 PM UTC-5, Steve Palincsar wrote: On 12/11/2013 01:51 PM, NickBull wrote: Because what happens on the DC area bike paths (none of which are plowed to my knowledge) is that during the day, the snow partially melts, people ride on it sliding all over and leave ruts that veer every which way (not to mention all the walkers with their footprints). Then overnight everything refreezes and those ruts are like little icy Grand Canyons. If your tires don't have enough studs sticking out to the sides to catch on the sidewalls of the ruts then they won't be able to climb out of the rut. So then the tire has no choice but to slide sideways down the rut while meanwhile your momentum continues forward, making it hard to avoid going down. Excellent description, lacking only one point: after the first couple of days, the snow on the trails melts entirely in many places, leaving only splotches of rutted ice except for areas always in shade or at bridges overpasses. In those areas -- for example, on the Mount Vernon trail headed into DC, you can expect to find ice on the two overpasses at National Airport and under the bridges crossing the Potomac into the District -- the rutted ice can sometimes linger for a week or two. Those areas all together may add up to one, or perhaps two tenths of a mile on an 8 mile trip from Alexandria into the District. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. On topic content: fine cotton and wool, made by loving craftsmen in thatched workshops. [RBW] 1983 Stumjumper-willing to part out
Hey all no serious offers so far on the whole package stumpjumper with no shipping so will go to a different strategy. I am willing to part it out if someone wants the frame, shifters, brakes and drive train only I can ship them for fairly cheap. I can then sell the bosco bars and nitto technomic delux separately as well. the wheels are the only item that costs a lot to ship but if someone wants a set from a 92 MB2 message me and we will talk. Thinking $300 for the frame, shifters, brakes and drive train. $50 for the bosco bars and $40 for the stem. The only caveat is I cant part it out until someone first buys the frame. Thanks for helping me get on better with the wife who looks at the bike every day and says another @%ing bike. Again its a 1983, fully lugged with the biplane fork, 22 inch, I think the biggest one they made that year. I bought it off a list member in perfect condition, minus the usual collection of scrapes and installed a Rivved out-cockpit with Cromo 55cm Bosco Bars, 130mm Technomic Deluxe stem. I changed out the cables to all Jagwire Hyper. I also swapped out the old wheelset for a set I had from a 1992MB2. So now its a 7 speed, just had to snug the 130mm wheel into the 128mm dropouts. Full deerhead components Brake pads are like new, all wires replaced. Slapped on some Fat Franks for around town riding. Standover with the fat franks is about 85cm. TT is 58cm. What a wondrous mirror. I live in a wee town, 700 year-round souls. Doubles in summer with folks from Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma seeking relief, unless fires keep them away. I have no hair on top, an ever greying beard, I run and bike barefoot in shorts or breeches, generally wear the same looking clothing every day, my kids go barefoot as much as I do, I run trails and am often startled out of active contemplative prayer when someone is close (if I don't smell their laundry detergent from a mile away because of wind direction), I bike or walk to the post (when I go at all). Oh, and before I discovered breeches to be the least nerve-firing leg-wear, I always wore a kilt. And I say nutty stuff like May God startle you with joy! to folks I see. We've enjoyed years of utility, transport, and just plain fun on Surly and Rivendell bikes. The brands intersect, but collectively they stretch the market in really meaningful ways. I have two kids who can work on their machines, lock them properly, carry everything they require, ride them safely and effectively on Seattle's streets, and who understand that bicycles are fun and useful. No idea if I could do it, for all the scents and noise, but it has me pondering, and that is a good thing! Grin. Thank your or sharing the warmth!
