Assuming the Betty Foy or Cheviot are a bit outside of the price range:

   - Brooklyn Cruiser (which I think Grant has some
   involvement): http://www.brooklynbicycleco.com/
   - Soma Buena Vista Mixte
   - Public Bikes
   - Paperbike
   - Papillionaire
   - Bobbin
   - Civia

I didn't realize until jotting these down, but there are a lot of mixte and
step-through models. I've ridden some of these, and they seem nice. The
700C versions fit 35, IIRC, and some are 26 wheels.

Happy graduation!

RE: [RBW] Graduation gift for a lady

2014-03-18 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
You can build up a SOMA mixte with 650B and it will (I think) fit Hetres.
Here's an (I think beautifully done) example:

There are lots of pics in the set on Flickr, look for somervillebikes.

She Devil takes cantis, Buena Vista sidepulls; She Devil has single mixte top
tube, Buena Vista is a true double tube mixte style. Both are nice bikes, for
sure. But I doubt either one is near as nice as the Cheviot; I haven’t seen
tire clearances for that bike published anywhere, but the pics certainly
suggest that it will take some chubby tires (there’s one p[pic on the Blug that
appears to show 44mm 650B tires with ample clearance for fenders; there’s also
a pic of the 700C 60cm size, but I can’t make out the tire size).

You are quickly getting a pretty good list. With lots of good ideas.

I will +1 on the She Devil. Handsome Cycles has been a great company to
deal with and as the proud owner of a Speedy, I can honestly say it is one
of my favorite bikes.

I'm not sure on the tire clearance, as mine is only running 35 paselas, but
I can say that there is tons of room. The web says clearance for 700x40
but I am almost sure you could go bigger than that. Handsome was a
pleasure to deal with and have been great whenever I have interacted with
them either on the phone or on social media.

And congrats to her.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-18 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I use Soma Xpress 650b on my commuter and have had two flats. One was
a thorn after 0.5 miles riding, and the other was a pinch flat after
running over a large, unseen object that caused me to crash down on my
rear wheel. For peace of mind it's good for the commuter and I don't
care about saving time on my 30 minute (each way) commute and extra
work means more exercise, which I need! Maybe I should be running some
armored tank tires, just in case :).

For brevets, the PariMoto made a huge difference in terms of perceived
speed and comfort, and I've never flatted those, but it's probably
just luck.

The Hutchinsons are good, but I think there are nice wider options.
The Soma B-line is probably an economical step up in speed as well as
the Lierre or the new Compass offering.

If I were going to ride 38s on brevets, then I would probably go with
the (not-extra light) Lierre or Compass offering. Bubba promises they
are almost as good as the Hetre :).

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-18 Thread Jim Bronson
I'm thinking about getting an Xpress as a spare tire, after having 5 flats
on 2 different Pari-Motos. I replaced the back tire with a spare after the
3rd flat, and proceeded to have two more.

If a rider is going to have to install the spare tire, I think there's some
merit in that spare being a little tougher.

I'm also considering trying out the Compass Loup Loup Pass as a rear tire,
and keeping the Pari-Motos on the front, at least until my supply of
Pari-Motos runs out.

The Hutchinsons are good, but I think there are nice wider options.
The Soma B-line is probably an economical step up in speed as well as

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-18 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I think the Xpress would make an excellent spare tire and is a fine
tire. Using the Pari-Moto up front and a more durable rear tire makes
a ton of sense. I rode over 600 miles on my Pari-Motos and the front
still had the little rubber-new tire things attached in the center,
whereas the rear had worn away the tread pattern in the very center.

Re: [RBW] Re: New version of the AllRounder?

2014-03-18 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
If I were building something ground up and wanted a wheel size smaller
than 622, I'd favor the 584 (650B) rim size. I'm pretty comfy on the
Hilsen/Quickbeam when trail rambling, but at about 40 mm of tire, it
changes things a bit - hard to articulate, but I'm feeling like there's
more weight under the bike. I'm a big fan of larger rims, but things get
more steamroller and less nimble to my way of riding. I'm 5'11 with about
an 86 pbh.

I've seen some amazing custom 584 mtbs, and it seems to finally be
solidifying as an option in the minds of manufacturers, which means a wider
variety of knobbier tires, if that's your need.

[RBW] Best Nitto handlebars for Shimano 105 shifters?

2014-03-18 Thread Bruce Smitham
Hi group,

I currently have 46cm Nitto noodle 177 bars with Shimano 105 shifters on my
Sam Hillborne. I like everything except the ramp and hood reach is a little
far away to comfortably brake. I'm looking for a different Nitto handlebar
and it's a little confusing. I want a shorter ramp so when I move from the
flats it moves quickly to the hoods. Does anyone have any knowledge of the
dirt drop or rando bars? It would help if you know the model number.
Looking for 26.0 X 44cm

I appreciate any feedback,

Bruce, San Diego

Re: [RBW] Re: New version of the AllRounder?

There are some small builders out there that can build what you want for a
reasonable price. Here is a link to my Matthews custom that is designed for
42-52 mm tires in the 650B size. Lugged steel with a quill stem. It's
probably closest to a Hilsen in tubing so it can do all you ask for,
touring, century's and trail riding. I just put on some 2.1 Schwalbe
knobbies but I normally run Hetres which are a great all around tire.

While the stock Riv's are all nice, sometimes you have to get a custom to
get exactly what you want.

My take on tires is that they make a HUGE difference in my enjoyment.
That's for me - not everyone obsesses about tires like some of us. I like
a supple, light tire, and don't mind the flats I occasionally get. That
said, I believe all flats happen on rear wheels while it's raining, and
usually within the first 100 miles on the tires. I once removed my newish
Gran Bois Cypres tires after having 2 flats in one ride, and left them on
the bench for a few months. I then put 'em back on and rode at least 2k
miles with no flats. I've also gotten flats on beefy tires, and that's the
ultimate letdown...

care about saving time on my 30 minute (each way) commute and extra

For brevets, the PariMoto made a huge difference in terms of perceived

 just luck.

The Hutchinsons are good, but I think there are nice wider options.
The Soma B-line is probably an economical step up in speed as well as

If I were going to ride 38s on brevets, then I would probably go with
the (not-extra light) Lierre or Compass offering. Bubba promises they
