[RBW] Re: Wet 300k
This was my 2nd 300k. It went better than the first one, so I'm getting used to these rides? I really enjoyed the company on the sections I was riding with others. I also enjoy the long reflective time in the saddle. I'm going to try to do a full series this year. We'll see how it works out. I need to start doing some intervals to get my times down a bit, but I feel like the bike is fairly dialed in for now. I definitely want to do the 3 volcanoes ride! I need to get in the mountains as I've done mostly rides around Seattle and Bellingham so far. Here's a short write up on the weekend's brevet: http://stonehog.com/2014/04/02/bahn-mi-brevet/ Brian Hanson Seattle, WA On Tuesday, April 1, 2014 9:15:59 AM UTC-7, Mike wrote: Brian, congrats on the finish. Was this your first 300k? I know I've said this before here but I'll just repeat it. The 300k is probably my favorite brevet length. Sure, it's hard, I've had my moments on 300ks, but ultimately, it's just a nice long day in the saddle and depending on speed and time of year, can be completed without riding at night. As for Noodles and cloth tape--yup, that's a winning combination. I recently swapped out my 48cm Noodles for 46s on my LHT and regret it. I'm too lazy to re-swap them. The 48s will likely go on a bike project I'm contemplating. Are you going to do a full SR series? If you get a chance, look at the route for SIR's 3 Volcanos 300k. That looks like a dream route. I've ridden all the roads, just not in a day. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I ran a Shimano 600EX on 5-8-speed friction applications and really loved it. When I widened my rear, I found a NOS Cyclone GT. It's in a spanish cedar cigar box in my garage now - Many miles, but still works great. I had it on my Moser before I found a Campy Chorus. At 190g, the Arabesque is lighter than anything except the carbon Campys, and then only 10g heavier. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190022.jpg On Thursday, April 3, 2014 8:40:38 AM UTC-5, Michael Hechmer wrote: David, I run the new Ultegra short cage on my Ram with 44/30 11-28 9 spd set up with DT friction. Re: [RBW] Re: Introduction and Sam Hillborne / AHH Sizing Advice
Avery, Something I did that you may want to consider is converting one of your bar end shifter sets to stem shifters. That way, when you change handlebars you don't need to mess with the shifters at all. For example, so far I have Noodles and a Surly Open Bar for my Hillborne. Each setup has its own brake levers, cables and tape/grips; ready to go. If I want to switch between cockpits it's a simple lift-n-lay. All I have to do is reconnect the brakes. There's no cable/cable housing waste and no re-taping, This approach was particularly suitable to these two setups because they each required different brake levers (i.e. MTB vs. Road). This may seem be a more expensive approach since each setup requires its own stem, but I've found that each handlebar change requires it's own unique stem size anyway. I think it's better used this way than just letting it sit in a drawer. FYI - If you don't have a stem shifter mount RBW sells a sharp looking unit. RE: [RBW] Berthoud Saddles
I have had a Berthoud touring saddle on my Homer for nearly 3 years. I think it's extremely comfortable with drop bars at approximately saddle height. As others have said, it does not stretch out like the non-Select Brooks saddles - in my experience, the Berthoud and the Brooks Select saddles break in similarly. One thing about the Berthouds - the proprietary 2.5 mm Allen head bolt/washer combos that attach the leather to the frame (the Berthoud equivalent of the Brooks rivets) can come unscrewed. They need to be checked periodically. Maybe a little Loctite would solve the problem, but I'm too lazy to try it, I just tighten them up from time to time. Also, as others have said, the Berthouds have a mount for a Berthoud Klik-Fix saddlebag connector, which is an extremely convenient and easy on/off way to mount a Berthoud saddlebag. I use it on my Hilsen, and really like it; bag comes off in a second with the push of one button on the mount. You can see the Klik-Fix mount between my Berthoud small saddlebag and the Berthoud saddle here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/9019678419/in/set-72157627914355388/ Finally, someone mentioned a concern about the load capacity if you hang a saddlebag from the loop-equivalents that are molded into the plastic frame. I have hung a pretty heavily loaded Medium Saddlesack off those loops, with no problems. The plastic is described as very high strength in Berthoud's marketing materials (for what that's worth). Oh, and at least to my taste, the Berthoud saddles are gorgeous. [RBW] Ideal AHH Wheelset
Hello All, My name is Michael and I am new to the group and from Indianapolis. I recently bought an A Homer Hilsen from Dick at the Country Bike Shop in Ohio. I am considering switching over my custom wheelset from my touring ride to the AHH. My custom wheelset is a Phil Wood Cassette hub laced to a Mavic a719 rim and up front I have a Schmidt SON hub laced to a Mavic a719. The AHH came with a stock wheelset - Shimano LX hubs. I think want to have dyname lighting on the AHH and want to have my Phil Hub on back, but want to run this change past the bunch. Will I be giving anything up (speed, handling, feel, ect) by switching out the current wheel set? Is the Mavic a719 to much of a touring rim for the AHH? The bike came with Jack Browns and I think I will switch those over to my custom wheelset on the AHH if I do make the swap. [RBW] Re: Ideal AHH Wheelset
The A719 is a high-end rim not heavy - just not light-weight. The huge benefit of dynamo lighting makes the front wheel swap an excellent idea (assuming the bicycle would be ridden at night). The only consideration for the rear wheel is if the Phil hub is compatible with your current gearing set-up. No reason not to have the current LX on the rear and the dynamo wheel up front. Ian A. Re: [RBW] Ideal AHH Wheelset
Michael: good tires will make a far greater differnce in performance and feel than differences in wheels, which, if minimally decent in bearings and rim weight, will make very little difference by comparison. The Phil rear and SON front sound top of the line acceptable to me. [RBW] FS: Showers Pass Elite 2.0, mens, black, size Large, and Showers Pass hood
A great rain jacket. Showers Pass Elite 2.0, mens, black, size Large, and Showers Pass hood that velcros onto jacket. This jacket is in very nice condition with no rips or tears or visible marks. All zippers are in top condition and the jacket is clean and maybe has been hand washed 2 or 3 times. Material is still sturdy and does not feel at all thinned out due to being washed and worn a zillion times. I live in CA so not too much rain cycling here so jacket worn mostly on a few multiple day tours outside the country. Check my perfect feedback and ask as many questions as you need to make an informed buying decision. $110 shipped. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Mt.Diablo Overnight/Tour De California Race watching shindig. April 12-13
Plan is to do a long loop around the backside of Diablo through Morgan territory . Leave late 4ish pm from Rivendell HQ. Mostly road, till we get to the top of Morgan territory Road. https://goo.gl/maps/KAzty Pretty sure this connects back to Devil's elbow. I was told it didn't. This ride is to see if it does. Bring water and food for the next day. Don't know where we would need to fill up on Marsh Creek road. Maybe I'll bring a filter. Expect some climbing. Then waiting a lot for 10 seconds of riding. Should be fun See ya there. Manny -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
