I really, really like the fact that I can go for so long without re-lubing.

I live in Maryland, which is *not* a dusty, dry place. Green. Rains about
once a week in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I hear the lube you should use depends on where you live. Like dry lube for
dusty zones, and wet lube for wet zones, or something like that. I can't
remember exactly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread Jim Bronson
I'm pretty intrigued by chain lube with a distinctive smell as it's calling
card. I generally smell all the motor oils that I put in the household
cars and I can tell various motor oils by their smell. I think Mobil 1
smells the best of all oils I have used, with Mobil Super 5000 a close 2nd.

Now gear oil, that stuff stinks like sulfur. Most cars nowadays don't have
pumpkins like the old rear drivers though, so it's usually the "transaxle"
you are filling with ATF. But anyway I digress.

I need a sample of Chain-L to smell. I am curious.

I went back and looked at the various lubes I've tried and they are all
variations on the "dry wax." So that path has been tried. The Chain-L looks
well worth trying. So I will try the wet lube next and see how it goes.
Given that Boeshield and White Lightening and the rest last me at most 10
hours of riding, its time to move on. I suspect that even under ideal
conditions, the steeper riding I do is rough on a lube, so wet that
reapplies itself internally makes sense.

You can smell it when you enter the garage for the next week after
installing it on the chain.
Smells like engine oil.

I think I could could go for 1k at least without a relube if I remember
right from my use. Rain or shine. Set it and forget it for the season.
But I ride roads, and don't get all muddy.

I am using Boeshield liquid now, but it doesn't last long at all from my
experience. Maybe 200 miles tops for me if I am remembering right.
But I like it 'cuz it is purported to dry as a paraffin wax, for keeping
cleaner. It also is supposed to flush out any other lube on the chain as it
penetrates.
Very short lived though. But I like it a lot.

I may go back to Chain-L when I run outta Boeshield because I have a lot of
Chain-L No.5 left. After that, I may decide to settle on one or t'other.

Ryan,

If I didn't have vertigo, yes, there are conditions I would switch back to
the Albatross. They are an amazing bar for more upright riding. Unless
something like back issues require me to have a more upright position (and
since I floor live and have regular bone broth and an anti-inflammatory
diet I am hopeful that is less likely), I do no see switching back. The
vertigo is simply far less of a factor with the Albastache, with the bike

Shockingly thin compared to Squirt, but it took me awhile to see this is
advantageous. You have to apply it more frequently, but there is very
little build up, nothing like with Squirt. No dirt clings to it . Wipe the
chain after each ride. It's very easy to reapply, let it dry for at least a
few hours. Pretty good in the rain too .

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar swap question

2014-04-14 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi DS,
Congrats on the Hunqapillar!

Shifters:
The MTN vs Road bar thing: you might want to consider the "IRD Silver SOS
thumbies" offered by Riv. Unlike the Paul thumbies, which are for specific
h-bar diameters, the SOS thumbies come with shims. You can swap between MTN
and Road bars by moving the SOS +/- shim. With a set each of MTN and road
brake levers, you'd be all set to try a whole bunch of set ups.

Alternatively, if you're ok with it, down tube shifters would obviate the
change shifter issue. A quill shifter mount would also do the trick.

(I'm a thumbies and bar-end shifter sort of guy, so I'll deal with the
swaps. If you're into swapping on a 10-min whim, you can get a set of
DaVinci splitters. I think Ritchey offers a similar splitter.)

Grips:
I usually run bars without tape until I get the brake levers "just right".
If that's not your thing, bar tape wraps quickly and is inexpensive.
Clamp-on grips would work, too. The downside to the cork grips is the glue
part-- some use tape or hairspray to get the grips on without using glue.

I'd also recommend Spur Cycles grip rings.
(http://spurcycle.com/griprings.html) They are silicone and comfy. I have
them on my crosscheck, and they are fairly easy on/off.

Stems:
Stem length can make a huge difference in comfort. dougP mentioned
removable face plate for swaps-- you can combine that and stem changes by
using a threadless stem adaptor. VO and Nitto (probably others) make them.
You can then use fairly inexpensive threadless stems to dial in the proper
stem length. I think Marc Irwin who posts to this list has his Hunqapillar
set up with one of these stems.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!
Shoji

Excellent. I got a buddy up here that will be joining. I say we try to meet

Chris,

Great story. Totally worth it, I'm sure. Reminds me of the summer of '78. I
was 18, just out of high school, working as a cook at Old Faithful Lodge in
Yellowstone. Had a day off and a hankering for a buffalo burger and a piece
of pie from the little cafe in West Yellowstone - 31 miles away. My bike at
the time was a Montgomery Wards 10-speed and my riding duds Levis and a
flannel shirt. Threw on a daypack and a water bottle and did the ride. Good
burger and pie, for sure. And spectacular scenery along the Firehole and
Madison Rivers. Mostly uphill on the way back including one pretty stiff
climb up the Firehole Canyon, full stomach and heat of the day. I remember
pulling into a picnic area along the river with about 10 miles left and
lying down on a table and falling asleep. My first long ride.

Not like batman, I mean, not unless you're into vigilante justice AND

[RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne - 60cm

2014-04-14 Thread Mattt

I am selling my 60cm Sam Hillborne. I estimate it has about 1000 miles on
it. The frame is in excellent condition. There are 3-4 nicks on the
frame. There is no chain scrapes or anything of the such on the chain stay.
The Sam has not been in crashes and always ridden with care. Framesaver
was put on or in the Sam. I recently put on new wires for the brakes and
derailers. The moustache bar is a little beat up, but most of the scrapes
are under the tape. The moustache bar has a noticeable scrape near the
clamp from a previous owner struggling to get it on.

I had this for sale on craiglist in the past and someone on the list posted
it here. I found my white whale and why now putting this on the market
again. I have to conform to my wife’s one bike policy.

I understand the moustache bar is not a desirable handlebar for some riders.
A dirt drop stem usually goes with the moustache bar If this is the case,
I will sell the bike without the moustache bar for $40 less and without the
moustache bar and dirt drop stem for $100 less.

The Sam Hillborne does not include the rear rack and front and rear light
seen in the pictures. Also, the moustache bar no longer has tape. I was
doing some experimenting with handlebars. I will update the pictures
accordingly if you want to see without.

Please send me any questions.
I am asking $2000 plus shipping. Send me an offer you believe is fair. The
most I can say is no or barter and we can still be RBW friends.
I live in Oklahoma City, OK, if anyone is near by and wants to see in
person.
I did my best for detailed pictures. If you need to see anything further
let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I can't answer that. I just know that even a little wet makes the chain
noisy; I also know that the general scuttlebutt (waxing has been around for
decades) is that paraffin is not a good lube for wet conditions. I haven't
heard of anyone recommend bees wax except Grant, and I haven't heard
anyone, Grant or anyone else, give any reason why it might be good as a
chain lube.

Yes, beeswax does penetrate (it's thinner than bees wax when liquid) but
apparently it doesn't keep water out or at any rate, doesn't keep the chain
lubed when water gets in.

FWIW, I get a consistent 2K miles of out cheap Sachs chains no matter what
I do to lube them; and I lube every 200 miles or so. Perhaps its the strain
on the chains from climbing fixed? At any rate, the only benefit I have
gained from waxing over many years is what I described. I have tended
recently to simply wipe a chain, drip on lube, spin, and wipe again until
the outside is relatively clean. I do prefer "light" lubes to the heavy
ones that many people recommend for wet weather.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: The Hundred Mile Burger

Hmmm Char burger. As a kid growing up in Portland the family often took
trips through the gorge on the way to visit family in Eastern Washington
and we would regularly stop at Char Burger in Hood River -yum.

[RBW] test ride for a friend

2014-04-14 Thread Rusty Click
Is there anyone in Pittsburgh commuting distance, who has a Betty or
Cheviot? I have finally convinced a good friend and riding partner to
consider getting her first Riv, but she would like to try riding one before
making a purchase decision. She is sure she wants a step through frame,
and does quite a few bike trips with us.

Thanks,
Rusty

[RBW] Re: Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
I should add, that the challenge I have in the riding I do is it's both
"wet" and "dry" almost at the same time on many, many days. Between 20
minute downpours than mudify everything to creek crossings, things rapidly
go from wet to dry to wet to dry. Dry dust and grit sticks to the "wet"
lubes, and the dry lubes are gone in a flash. Do any of the above
suggestions address those conditions (short of reapplying multiple times on
the same ride)?

[RBW] Re: Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'm thick-headed with wool for brains, so please help me understand why wax
works in dry dusty conditions by not wet. That makes no sense to me.

Adding vasaline to beeswax might make sense. Would adding an oil of some
kind make equal sense?

Patrick, doesn't beeswax penetrate the chain when you cook it for 30
minutes?

Michael,
I may be able to ride down/camp out if you go on the 26th. I'd probably
meet my wife and kids in Bloomington & catch a ride back on Sunday, though.
I've got a coupla friends in B-ton that may be interested in meeting/riding
and camping as well, but they're not on this list. If you can get some
times together, let me know.

Best,
Eric

[RBW] Re: Albastache conversion Complete!

2014-04-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Dave, it's a Rivet. It's new and I'm only a few longish rides into it, but
it's flat out the best saddle I've ridden. That's not saying much as in
recent history I've ridden the B-68 for two years. But while I can tell I
am still breaking it in, it is the most comfortable saddle after a few
hours riding I've ever been on. Me bits still get blood flow for one thing.

[RBW] An idea for an additional saddlebag grip

2014-04-14 Thread Michael Ullmer
I recently acquired a Nitto Saddlebag Grip which has made the use of
saddlebags for daily use actually practical as I don't have to spend 5
minutes fiddling with the leather straps whenever I want to take the bag on
or off the bike. It is truly an amazing design. I found, though, that I
needed to keep the grip tightened closely to the bag in order to avoid
excessive swaying of the bag while riding. This meant that there wasn't
enough room for me to hold on to the grip because there wasn't enough space
between the grip and the bag. I then created my own handle which attaches
to the grip. This allows me to snug the grip as tight as I want against the
bag and still be able to carry it comfortably off the bike. The homemade
grip is made of two strips of leather which were initially wrapped with
twine and then shellaced, but I found that I liked the feel of shellaced
cotton handlebar tape better. I noticed that the metal rings which attach
to the handle to the grip were wrapped around the small screw in the
picture and that it eventually wore away at the threads of the screw. I
found that using a nylon bushing to protect the screw is the way to go. I
hope this is helpful to anyone using a saddlebag grip that wants to make
their own handle. If you need any clarification on any of this please get
in touch. Cheers all!

I need to take fresh pictures, but that snow is hammering Denver

Hopefully I will get pics soon...

Same recommendation here. Just wipe the chain sideplates after every ride.
Lasts a long time. When you start to hear chain noise, add another half
dozen drops.

Re: [RBW] Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread David Brandt
After ruining several pairs of pants from grease stains I made the switch. I
have been riding with 4 parts paraffin to 1 part beeswax for the last couple
years and love it. I told Grant that I was doing it and he suggested adding a
little petroleum jelly to it. So now I run with an added tablespoon of jelly in
it.

My bike drivetrain stays cleaner, seems quitter and I have not had an issue
with the chain. You can touch the components now and stay clean.

I rewax it about every 400 - 500 miles. It is easy once your set up to do it.

Re: [RBW] Chain lube/wax

2014-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Paraffin is no good at all for chains in wet weather. Its great offroad in
dry weather because nothing sticks to it -- I can ride hours in sandy soil,
wipe my finger over the chain and have it come away clean. But one good
wetting will make your chain noisy.

You can add oils or graphite to paraffin. Oil: the more you add, the more
sticky it becomes. I've not tried graphite.

Beeswax is no good for chains at all -- too thick to penetrate, lumpy and
sticky when dry.

I've waxed chains off and on for 15 years at least. Besides a
clean-to-touch chain -- a real benefit -- I'm not sure it has other real
benefits. It does clean the chain when you soak it, though -- oh, and keep
the chain elevated above the bottom of the waxing pot where all the gunk
falls. I go back and forth between dribble on bottled lube and wipe off and
waxing.

If you wax, using an old crockpot and master links makes it very easy. Melt
wax, simmer chain for 30 minutes, remove from heat, add salt and pepper to
taste, garnish with parsley.

[RBW] Ride Report: The Hundred Mile Burger

2014-04-14 Thread Chris Chen
Or: How I fell in love with my bicycle again.

After the awesome ramble out to Mason Hill, I wasn't planning to do any
more riding this weekend, but a social engagement fell through so the first
thought I had was,

"eff it, I'm going to Crown Point."

I have evidence of this:
https://twitter.com/secretasianman/status/455385037743988737

But really that was a straw man. I really wanted to go to Bonneville Lock &
Dam, and probably Cascade Locks, home of the Char Burger and The Bridge of
The Gods, roughly 50 miles distant.

I packed plenty of fruit and nuts and water, but forgot my maps, so I did
some psychic navigation to Troutdale and the Historic Columbia River
Highway. The Easterlies were strong today; I had to just pick a lower gear
and spin my way on the flats. It was not my favorite thing but the skies
were so blue and Mount Hood was so clear I nearly forgave the wind.

The highway leaves Troutdale and enters the Scenic Area proper after
crossing the Sandy River. I took Woodard Rd., which is one of the first
turns off the historic highway, which takes you up the bluff in a direct
fashion. It was a hoot to see cabbage fields I had last seen when I did my
birthday ride on New Year's Eve. Woodard is a pretty honest direct climb.
To stay on the ridge (or close to it) I needed to move over to Mershon,
which has a few pretty rollers. This dropped me back onto the historic
highway just outside the Town of Corbett. In short order I hit the main
vista spots, the Women's Forum, Crown Point (where I hung out at the picnic
area nobody ever seems to use), Multnomah Falls (which reminds me of
Disneyland more and more every time I visit), and the Bonneville Fish
Hatchery, where you can see GIANT STURGEON.

The last six miles of the ride to Cascade Locks was on the Trail portion of
the Historic Columbia River Highway, which I've come to like. Except for
the stairs. Oh god the stairs.

The first restaurant you reach when you get to Cascade Locks is the Char
Burger, which is currently undergoing renovations, so I ended up eating in
the smaller restaurant in the basement, which is less "guns on the wall"
and more "waterfront dining". Oh well. BURGERS WERE HAD. I use the plural
because I took the burger of a customer who left after ordering. MORE
CHEEZBURGER FOR ME.

I'd known that I wouldn't get back home before dark, so I was a little
apprehensive of riding on curvy country roads at night, but as it turned
out, this was the most magical part of the ride. By the time I'd reached
the touristy areas, almost all the cars were gone, and all I had to deal
with were clouds of Gnats. As the sun disappeared and the temperatures
started to fall, I found I had more energy. I've noticed this
before--riding gets easier when it's cooler.

So here's the magical part: All the small towns were really quiet, and way
more charming at night than during the day. By 10pm most all the businesses
are closed, and it's just so quiet. I heard frogs! I adjusted my dynamo
light to point a little higher and I was able to see far in the distance;
the stars were out and the moon was nearly full.

I returned back via Marine Drive, which is a road that is built atop a
flood control dike; It was a gorgeous night to return to Portland that way,
and the radar speed reader clocked me at 15mph, which I'll take any day.

Pictures prove something, but mostly that I'm thinking about planning more
rides that go late into the night.

~100mi, leave noon, return 11pm.
