[RBW] Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
Paul Mini-Motos. Perfect brake for my Simple1. Great stopping power, regular cable pull, clearance for 700x45. -J -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
Have you tried changing the brake pads? How do the current ones look? Change the toe-in? Brake bolts are all snug? What about the rims? Have you tried cleaning/degreasing them? Fork crown-mounted cable stop is a good suggestion. I just switched from Tektro CR720 to Shimano CX70 on my Hunqapillar (from high profile to low profile). I'd previously had some issues with brake squeal, but I haven't experienced brake with the CX70s. Good luck-- brake squeal can be a pain... shoji On Tuesday, May 13, 2014 10:13:24 PM UTC-4, LAP57 wrote: My Quickbeam is my most used bike but I have suffered with front brake squeal since I bought it about 8 years ago. I spoke with Rivendell and they feel the issue is brake related and not an issue with the fork. I took a look at the Quickbeams on the Cyclofiend site noticed that many had high profile cantis. Has anyone cured the squeal by going to high profile cantis? Any recomendations? Paul does not recommend their high profile cantis for road bikes so I have been looking at Cane Creek and Velo Orange brakes. Any thoughts on these? Any other options? Thanks. RE: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
My Quickbeam is (and has been since it arrived in 2009) quiet as a mouse, with Paul Neo-Retros on the front and Paul Touring Cantis on the rear. You can kinda sorta see the setups front and rear in this picture – better to blow it up to largest size for best view. https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4412267966/in/set-72157623567913352 From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Shoji Takahashi Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 9:46 AM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes Have you tried changing the brake pads? [RBW] Re: Which 700C fenders fit Mafac Racers?
here's the brake spec page http://ruedatropical.com/2009/01/mafac-dia-compe-paul-centerpull-brake-specs/ I'm running Weinmann CPs, which are as wide as and slightly greater reach than the Pauls, but with 43mm fluted Honjos and 32mm tires, it looks like I could put a fender over the fender. If you have the long-reach Racers, I think you could do the same. With short-reach Racers, I think you'd be limited to 40mm fenders and 28mm tires. On Monday, May 12, 2014 2:54:43 PM UTC-5, davidcha wrote: I'm running a set of 41mm fluted Honjo's with my Mafac Racers. Plenty of room and a good fit overall. I just searched for them and I'm not sure they're still being made... FYI: I run 700C x 28mm Continental 4000s on this bike. I tried to run some 30mm (32's) Grand Bois Cypress but they were just too tight. - Dave -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Woody's Chop Chort 2.5 Fenders
Follow up: On my 10 miles snow and mud dirt road ride the other day I had a great test of these fenders. Here's the photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/14000120310/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/14184178072/in/photostream/ Here's the text from the description of the photos, aka a mini-review: These performed exactly as I asked for them to, and I’m asking a LOT of them. They are partial fenders, to allow for big clearences between the 2.25” tires and the fender so they clear mud, snow, rocks and debris. Much of this mud is the result of the flat fender, some from the tire spray. But of real importance is that the spray pattern dramatically decreases half way up the bag — as in almost no spray got to my back. That’s what I’m asking of this rear fender and it performes it’s job wondrously. And it handles rocky/rooty bumpy single track just fine. If you want full coverage, this is not the way to go, but if you want hearty fenders that can keep the spray off you from the knees down from both the front and back and handle wild, rugged terrain over beefy knobbies, these are brilliant! [RBW] Dumonde Tech Chain Lube Initial Review
I've been using the sample of Dumonde Tech John sent me to try out (I'd called and asked for a sample.) You can read about what makes this stuff unique (and it seems to be from my experience so far, though I haven't tried the heavy chain oils like Phil's or chainsaw oil). The simple concept is this stuff is attracted to the heat of friction in the chain where it bonds into a self-lubricating polymer coating on the chain. Apply one drop per link, and leave it alone till you hear the chain start to squeak, then repeat, waiting until you hear it squeak to reapply. The time intervals between applications will likely increase. We had a month of mostly dry weather, and it handled that month just fine, needing reapplication about three weeks in for the first time (it's supposed to build up to several months). During our recent May snow storm of a few days, I've done about 5 hours of wet, snowy, and muddy riding -- rides exactly like the conditions that previous made my chain seize up after an hour in it with my previous wax lubes. This stuff held up just fine, with the drive train sounding as quiet as ever. Indeed, this is the quietest my drivetrain has ever been. So far, I'm very pleased. It looks to have solved my need for one lube that can handle wet and dry and not be a big messy bother. http://www.dumondetech.com/products/bicycle-2/ Disclaimer: I got a free bottle of this to try, but am not affiliated with Dumonde Tech in any other way. That's so true Patrick. I fell in with the CrossFit crowd and decided to cut out sugars and grains. Re: [RBW] Re: Losing Bike weight vs. Rider weight. Which one more effectively makes you go faster?
Bagels have a ton of calories - I've been trying to stay away from them lately. Portion control is key for me. Doesn't matter so much what I eat but moreso how much of it I eat. Granted, I do try to stay away from red meats and fried foods. I need to weigh myself and see how I've been doing since I've really been focusing on not overeating these last few weeks. I have a 1000K on Memorial Day weekend and the less weight I am carrying, the better. On Wed, May 14, 2014 at 4:01 PM, grrlyrida grrlyr...@gmail.com wrote: That's so true Patrick. [RBW] Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
I have a simpleone and have experienced a good amount of squealing from the front brake with my Paul touring cantis. I've found that the most extreme toe in possible helps for a while. Also the kool stop salmon pads seem to be a little better than others I've tried. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. No worries! Just drink 100% grass fed cream and you'll be so satiated and happy, you won't need to eat till dinner. If I take any food on a ride (even an all day one), it's a thermos of cream or butter or coconut oil. I don't need anything else. And yes, Patrick, I think you are right. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
All Quiet on the West Coast Front. I use salmon Kool Stops and don't toe in excessively. Still running the Shimano canti's which came with it. I have a slightly non-standard stem mount for the brake stop. (last photo here - http://www.cyclofiend.com/ssg/2006/ssg017-cyclofiend0206.html ) If it's brake squeal rather than shudder, then I don't know if it can be addressed by changing the brake stop - there have been a number of discussions (mostly in CX threads) about flexing cable stop mounts causing unwanted shudder under hard braking. I'd pop a different front wheel in there, just to see if it's related to the rim. Especially if you are getting the same results from different brake models. I ran some Avids on a CX bike, and do recall them being noisier - maybe something in the mount causing them to flex away - essentially undoing the toe-in - as you are moving. Any chance that the brake mounting bolts are bottoming out before they completely tighten the brake? You should be able to detect fore/aft play in the brake if that's the case. The other thing to do is find a shop who has the Wrench (mechanic) who knows how to deal with canti brake setup. Most don't. Pay to watch them work on it and ask some questions. RE: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes
I believe this is just break squeal as I don't feel any vibrations when I stop. I have been meaning to try a different rim, that would be a good test. I currently have a CR18 on the front and I think the squeal is worse with it then with the stock rim that came with the bike. There is no play in the brakes so the bolts are OK. I have a good mechanic and he has minimized the squeal but it always creeps back in after I get a few miles on the bike. I think I will go back to Kool Stop pads as they have been the best. I have some nice looking IRD cantilevers on my tandem another set for the Quickbeam may be in order. And perhaps a new front wheel if a different rim proves to be quieter. Thanks for the suggestions. I love the bike. If I could just get the squeal under control it would be perfect. Larry Powers Get a bicycle. I have found the fork crown mounted cable stop to eliminate squeal, not just shudder. Squeal is just high frequency shudder, isn't it? [RBW] Dumonde Tech Chain Lube Initial Review
Sounds good for your specific needs, Patrick. The only thing I can add to this discussion is that we get all sorts of lubes sent to our shop here in Seattle (rainy, at least almost as much as people think), mostly high tech or purpose specific or whatever, and they're all pretty OK. We try them all on our own bikes and sometimes on we ask the hardcore cyclocross guys and the bike polo guys to try them. Usually the finding is that they're the same or marginally worse or marginally better. Most often the same. The only constant is that lube is better than no lube. Tri Flow, Boeshield, Prolink, it's hard to tell any difference. We got some recently from a weapons contractor. Fine stuff, but we couldn't tell the difference. Extreme conditions sometimes requires extreme lubes I suppose, but generally it makes hardly any difference. Hear chirping birds? Lube it up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Barlow Pass and Hilsen
For those of you contemplating these bigger tires as a “hetre-like” solution for your road-oriented Hilsen (especially if you need/want fenders), beware toe overlap.
