OK, then let me state dogmatically that properly adjusted indexed

[RBW] Re: Handlebar flavors

2014-06-02 Thread Tony DeFilippo
The piles of scrap housing or to-early-frayed cables is definitely the cost of
indecision in handlebar selection... To include the shifter type/location
excursions.

I was enjoying the albatross bars on my Atlantis and then on the Saluki but
found that I had some nagging left forearm numbness during my GAP trip in days
two and three... So I just rebuilt the new to me Saluki with the original 46cm
Noodles. We'll see how that goes, I need to get some miles in with the drops
my only century was on noodles and my hands never went numb... Then again my
normal 15 mike roundtrip committee is very nice on albatross and moustache bars.

Big Basin is wonderful, but as Jim said, all the riding there is hilly. If
you want to camp near where you could make a coastal/inland loop that was
less hilly, though by no means flat, you could camp at Butano State Park or
Half Moon Bay State Beach. You could then make a loop going south on
Highway 1 and north on Gazos Creek/Cloverdale/Stage Road/Tunitas/Lobitos

One cheap and interesting place to look into would be the hostel at the Pigeon

with the Santa Cruz Randonneurs or RUSA for suggested routes--they offer a lot

[RBW] Re: Ghost shift on a 61cm Atlantis?

2014-06-02 Thread Ron Mc
my buddy had a ghost shift on his Mercian - always shifted to harder gear
when he loading it down. Of course the bike has thin, somewhat flexible
stays. He solved it by lengthening the rear housing on his derailleur
cable.

On Sunday, June 1, 2014 11:52:51 AM UTC-5, William! wrote:

My Atlantis has had occasional ghost shifting issues since I first built
it up. Usually when standing up to pedal, only in the middle cogs (highest

 Things I've tried:

- The whole drive train has been replaced a few times as I've worn it
out. I've learned the hard way and keep a careful eye on chain stretch and
tooth wear. So the problem is probably not the drive train.
- The silver bar end shifters are tight, probably tighter than needed.
I've tried beeswax, replacing the plastic thingies. Pretty sure they are
not slipping, the problem is probably not in the shifters.
- Tried using a cable liner along the bottom bracket shell. The thing
tends to slip up and become useless after a few dozen shifts and I don't
think it is making a difference even when properly aligned. The problem
could be here.

Re: [RBW] California Visit - Recommendations???

2014-06-02 Thread Anne Paulson
I've stayed both at Pigeon Point hostel and at the Montara hostel north of
Half Moon Bay. As I remember, both are standard hostels. Both are located,
as befitting former lighthouses, right on the ocean, in good riding
locations. If you stay at Montara, you could do Planet of the Apes and
return through the new tunnel, though come to think of it, those little
Friday wheels would probably not be ideal for Planet of the Apes.

If you’re into hosteling, another option that I can recommend is the Point
Reyes hostel. It’s about 40 miles from SF and is in a very secluded location
near the Pacific coast. The roads are fine for small wheels, but beware the 17%
uphill stretch just outside the hostel on the way back to the coast!

[RBW] SKS Fenders

2014-06-02 Thread Matt Lynch
Yesterday I was on some Northern California single track, and with the
unpredictability of recent weather still had my SKS Longboards installed.
Low and behold a stick got caught up in my front fender. I can happily
report the safety release worked as advertised! I was going fairly slow so
there was no damage to the wheel, fork, or myself and only a small crack in
the fender near the mounting bracket. I was able to reconnect the fender
and go about my way.

I've always thought the likelihood of this happening to be pretty low. And
it probably is. But now that it has happened to me, I don't think I would
want any fender without this breakaway feature. I highly endorse SKS.

In light of this, I think the rainy season has ended so I've taken the
fenders off till next year.

[RBW] Re: Ghost shift on a 61cm Atlantis?

2014-06-02 Thread Christopher Johnson
Since no one has mentioned it, have you tried loosening the B-screw on the
rear derailleur? Loosening the B-screw moves the derailleur arm forward,
which lets the chain wrap more around your cogs.

Messing with the B-screw on friction drivetrains has gotten me extra life
out of some really worn parts on a variety of frames.

On Sunday, June 1, 2014 9:52:51 AM UTC-7, William! wrote:

My Atlantis has had occasional ghost shifting issues since I first built
it up. Usually when standing up to pedal, only in the middle cogs (highest
 and lowest cog are fine).

At this point I'm thinking it's the frame – either the bottom bracket

If you feel like riding up a big hill while you are in the San Francisco

which is uphill). The payoff is a great view of the bridge and San

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam's Pedigree...

2014-06-02 Thread Trenker

I have a 66 cm Quickbeam and a 66 cm Atlantis. I would agree with Mr.
Powers that the Quickbeam is not a lightweight tubeset.

Rivendell advertised the Simpleone as having 0.9/0.6/0.9 tubing all around,
and I would be surprised if the Quickbeam is any lighter.

The main difference I can detect between the Quickbeam and Atlantis is that
the Quickbeam has a longer top tube. So you could call it kind of a
single-speed touring bike. But it’s designed to be that way, let’s face it,
Rivendells are strong bikes made to be ridden on rough surfaces, often by
heavy riders.

I’ve had mine since 2009 and I ride it a lot, I can’t say I’d change
anything about it.

To me there are a few questions:

Is a more flexible frame easier to pedal, and more efficient over long
distances? I believe it is possible to feel the difference, but I am not
sure anyone has proven which takes less energy to pedal.

Is a stiffer frame with heavier tubing less likely to break? You would
think so, but frames seem to break at certain spots, so you could ask if
the top tube, for example, really needs to be that heavy. And is it
actually better to have some flex built in at certain points to take stress
off other parts of the frame?

There are a lot of things to ponder while just riding. :-)

While in SF, bring your bike onto a ferry from fisherman's wharf heading to
Angel's Island. There's an easy 5-mile perimeter loop with amazing views

this trip as it's not worth it. Bikes available for rent on the island
itself if your family wants to come along. The perimeter loop has a few
climbs but is fun and gorgeous.

I'm having a problem sending emails out here for some reason, but I was

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam's Pedigree...

2014-06-02 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Not sure I have a strong opinion, but here are some thoughts:

I've never been convinced that that QB is inherently quicker than the AHH
by virtue of the frame - I've always got the dangly bits on the Hilsen, and
that confounded coastable rear wheel which always confuses me a bit... But,
the result is that the riding of the AHH is never quite the same as the QB
even though at times my setups have been nearly identical.

I've been riding the AHH pretty exclusively for recent months - mostly
because I want to replace the crank on the QB and my sloth has prevented me
from getting to it. (Pesky sloth). It will be interesting to see what the
QB feels like after an extended focus on the other one. Of course, since I
usually ride the QB fixed, there's an inherent drivetrain difference which
always makes the orange bike feel a bit snappier. Plus, it is orange,
which helps.

All of which is to say that they are close cousins. And I would say -
having never owned one but having ridden a couple - that the Rambouillet is
definitely the third horse in that troika, and if I had to rank them it
would range from Rambouillet to AHH with the QB in the middle, in terms of
burly-ness of frames. FWIW - I find the Sam a little more robust, probably
a near neighbor with the Atlantis, followed by the Hunqa, then to the realm
of the Bombadil.

Both the AHH and QB have similar characteristics in handling under weird
and wacky trail conditions, which is where I seem to find myself most
frequently. Of course, I've never ridden a GP-design that didn't behave
well generally, and rambling in particular.

My Atlantis has had occasional ghost shifting issues since I first built
it up. Usually when standing up to pedal, only in the middle cogs (highest
 and lowest cog are fine).

At this point I'm thinking it's the frame – either the bottom bracket
shell cable routing or excessive frame flex. I'm thinking of tapping the
bottom bracket shell to install a proper cable route. Anyone tried that?
Anyone else dealt with this issue on largish Atlantis or other similar Rivs?

[RBW] TRP CX8.4 mini Vs on Atlantis

2014-06-02 Thread dougP
Today I installed a pair of TRP CX8.4 mini V brakes on my wife's Atlantis.
Over the years, we've tried various combinations, with only marginal
success. The stock Tiagra levers fit her hands nicely and seem to
work'n'play well with the mini Vs. No extensive test ride yet but on a
casual spin around the neighborhood she sees a major improvement in both
control and braking power. On top of that, they look good, are easy to
install and set-up. It was definitely my lucky day: I only had to replace
the front brake housing cable; exiting hardware worked on the rear. I've
had full size Vs on my Atlantis for quite a while like 'em a lot. Life
is good.

[RBW] I raced my Riv.

2014-06-02 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
My Atlantis was not the only Rivendell in the Almonzo 100, but I am pretty
sure that there was not another Riv in the Dirty Kanza 200 or Half Pint.
The bike performed flawlessly except for my sloppy friction shifting.
About a year ago, I drove up to Spring Valley, MN and rode with Jim Thill
and a bunch of country bike cyclist on the Almonzo 100 course. After that
experience, I decided that gravel was a lot safer and more scenic than
riding on pavement. I built a Surly LHT into a gravel grinder and started
riding with Guitar Ted on Saturday mornings for a 3-hour gravel ride. I
found the Atlantis on this forum and realized that it was a much nicer ride
than the Trucker; the Surly has been hanging in the garage since.

I wasn't out to win, just finish. I haven't heard where I placed in the
Almonzo, but I finished the DK Half Pint in the top 1/4 of the starters and
the top 1/3 of the finishers. I carried too much stuff, and should have
run lower air pressure in the tires. I was afraid of pinch flats on the
cattle grates, but I was able to wheelie or hop the bike over most of them.
After the race, one of the more experienced riders suggested 35# in the
front and 40# in the back; I was running 45# in both of the Schwalbe Dureme
700cX40. I am looking forward to trying the Half Pint (111 miles) again
next year, but I doubt if I will ever do the 200. After 8 hours of gravel,
wind, hills, heat, and sun, I am ready to get off of the bike.

I love this bike and really love passing guys half my age on carbon fiber
'cross bikes...

2014-06-02 Thread Abcyclehank
Anyone willing to help a Michigander out by lending a 68cm-64cm bike for the
weekend. Decided to ride my motorcycle(BMW '95 R1100GS packed with 66cm Bike

new one home).
The original plan was to fly out with a bike and the wife who has been
promising to show me Northern California for the past 23 years. She just
canceled her portion of the trip, but I am committed to migrate regardless
because that is a major perk of being a poorly paid public school teacher. I

My fallback might be swinging through Washington state to possibly collect a

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for
2 nights, July 12 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a
30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there
will be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the
backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW
all around nice guy Vince Nivolo. More announcements of RBW folk will be
forthcoming.

For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're
really going to attend. The poll didn't exceed 40, but if we have many more
than that, we should get another campsite or two.

I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for something

that too.

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for 2 nights, July 12 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a 30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there will be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the backcountry for Monday. Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW all around nice guy Vince Nivolo. More announcements of RBW folk will be forthcoming. For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're really going to attend. The poll didn't exceed 40, but if we have many more than that, we should get another campsite or two.I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for something (leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let me know that too.cheersjim

[RBW] BTWD San Diego 2014

2014-06-02 Thread Tom Virgil
Our BTWD was delayed by two weeks due to the fires in San Diego. All is
well now (for most of us, but my heart goes out to those who lost). The
morning pit stops had some cool stuff and I salute the provisioners and
volunteers.

But, sometimes, I wish it was called Bike From Work Day. That always
seems to be where the sweet spot happens.
