[RBW] Re: Hunq or bomb

2014-07-13 Thread Liesl
Mobile Bill, I can chime in for a moment on the 26 tires versus the
650B's. I have 2 650B bikes—a Saluki like you and a proto Bleriot set up
as a single speed. when I won the raffle custom, with my height and custom
desires (55mm tires fenders, top tube, diagatube/lng wheelbase, 650B
wheels, combined with 5'2 height) something had to give for it all to
work. That something was going from 650B to 26 wheels. Turns out that
with the 55mm Big Bens, the outer diameter is really about a 700. I got
the 55 Big Bens because I took the little 48 Hunq out on a S24O with the
merry Rivsters in Walnut Creek and fell in love with the confidence and
security of those big tires.

I thought going into it that I would just be able to swap wheels back and
forth when everything was going to be 650B, especially my front wheel
because I have one dyne hub that goes back and forth between the Saluki and
Proto. I just bit the big one and invested in a dyne hub for the 26
wheels. I also don't do a lot of switching tires, so that hasn't been a
big deal. If I want supple casings, etc, I ride the Saluki or Proto. If I
want to bomb around and go anywhere, I'm on the custom/Big Bens. Granted,
I don't do mountain trails—but I think there are plenty of folks who use
the BiG Bens for those purposes.

The ride I have now on the custom is great great great, and I feel a bit
like I'm up on a tractor, which I quite enjoy as a short person.

I think you can't go wrong; go with your heart and habits and only you know
how they intersect with your funds. If you're crazy about tires and like
to futz with trying all different sorts, yes, a 650B these days will
provide lots of fun and the Bomba is the middle way to go. Can you stretch
your dollars to the max and get a custom? You won't regret it but you'll
have to wait. Is a Hunq with 26 wheels fun? You bet! Plus it's the least
hard on funds. You can't go wrong, friend.

good luck,
RCW

My gut says go with the hunq. It would be nice to have the ability to swap

The price difference is so substantial that I wouldn't spend too long think

I'd be all over the Bombadil 52, which has the requisite 650b and
longer top tube and seems at least a slightly better fit for me, but I'm
not yet sure I can excuse myself for spending another grand (and it may
take a bit longer to accumulate that).
I doubt there's any difference in the sturdiness of these bikes. It all
comes down to fit and comfort over long distances and occasionally very
rough roads; I would hope sheer looks don't count for more than 10
percent, but I'm told the new Bombadil 52s have the rear tentacles.
Those familiar with Hunqs and Boms, think I'll see a difference in
 fit or ride?

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Big Ben opinions

2014-07-13 Thread Liesl
I have Big Bens on my Custom and, while I can't compare them to the Compass
tries as I haven't tried them, I concur with Shoji in all regards about the
Big Bens. They handle a wide range of pressures and they are FUN! Yes,
roots disappear and I don't fear/need to pay nearly so much attention to
potholes in the same way. Plus, they come in a wonderful brown if that's
your cup o' tea.

I second the request for a slightly wider compass 26 tire.

good luck and keep us posted.

Most current Riv models have fork tips with double eyelets. If
you buy a brand new A Homer Hilsen, Hunqapillar, Cheviut, Hillborne,
 or
Atlantis, you are going to get double eyelet fork tips. If you buy a
Roadeo or a San Marcos, you'll get single eyelets.

I have a Hub Area Rack, have had it for a while. It was an early
prototype that I talked them into letting me buy. For what it's
 worth, I
paid a fair bit more for mine that you guys are paying now, but I
 share
that as a reason for you to be happy, not as a reason for me to be
 sad.
Anyhow, now that there are bags for it, I've pulled it back out.
 Only now
do I realize that my old (2009) Hillborne does not have the upper
 eyelets
and my old (2010) Hilsen also doesn't have them. Only my Bombadil
 and my
Gunnar doublespeed has upper eyelets and mid fork braze ons. I wish I
could snap my fingers and have upper eyelets appear on my Hilsen and
 my
Hillborne so I could run this rack on those bikes as well. Oh well.

Anyhow, as a workaround, it looks like it would be possible to run
the HAR on the lower eyelets, but it might have a tilt to it. Not
 the end
of the world but not ideal.

[RBW] Sign I need 1/8 Chain vs. 8-speed?

2014-07-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
So, this happened: https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/14642857154/
Caption and details: Broke my chain (oh! THAT's what that popping was trying to
tell me!) and discovered how littel Entriders like their roots colliding with
asphault, even at slow speeds when cranking up a hill.

Could have been a LOT worse. I'm surprised it wasn't, actually.

Should I shift to 1/8 chain on the QB? How common is it to bust a chain
cranking up a hill? Is that something solved by shifting to 1/8 chain (this was
an 8 or 9 speed chain, and I have extra links, so can fix it short term). White
Industries says the Dos Eno works with 1/8 chain so long as the chain line is
good (I presume it is with Grant's designing).

Thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Sign I need 1/8 Chain vs. 8-speed?

2014-07-13 Thread Eric Daume
Agree with Patrick M., probably an installation issue. Sheldon Brown says
somewhere that modern 8/9/10 speed chains are actually stronger than single
speed chains, due to all the engineering that has to go into them to make
them strong enough to handle shifts under load.

2014-07-13 Thread ted
Ouch. Sorry abt the toe.
As others point out, standard chains should be more than strong enough for
any of us. I think the only reason to use 1/8in chain is so you can also go
with 1/8in cog and chainring. The added surface area should make em last
longer, and I like the look. No easy changing of gears with 1/8in stuff
though.

Could have been a LOT worse. I’m surprised it wasn’t, actually.

Should I shift to 1/8 chain on the QB? How common is it to bust a chain
cranking up a hill? Is that something solved by shifting to 1/8 chain (this
was an 8 or 9 speed chain, and I have extra links, so can fix it short
term). White Industries says the Dos Eno works with 1/8 chain so long as
the chain line is good (I presume it is with Grant’s designing).

 Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: How many of your bikes will take the HAR?

2014-07-13 Thread grant
*Apologies in advance to first-time Forum readers. This post is full of
inside jargon and references you don't have to think about.*

*Bill, I dunno how the prices worked out--could have been a drop in yen
against the dollar, but more likely it was a good old fashioned Human
Goofup, and we'll send you a fistful of Lip Ivo's to compensate. (Or may do
better than that). We'll work it out privately. The Your victory is not my
defeat attitude is rare and appreciated, but I am seriously mortified, no
joke, and will make it good.Note from the future: Bill was thrilled with
the deal, and on top of that has been forgiven for not showing up at the
Entmoot!The Wisco-built 700C Hunqas don't fit the HAR, but we're working on
it. The what we thought at the time was final design was so long ago that
it was before the W-bilts. They have a diff crown and longer blades. The
boss is the same distance from the crown dhoulder, but the flades are
longer, which lowers the top eyes. Mark and Robert, the two guys least
likely to use this rack, are nevertheless the cleverest, and have two
solutions already. Also, gawdthisisnotfun, it's possible that a future
version will have a hoop-mod feature that's slightly slicker than the
current one---which doesn't require a hoop at all, according to Nitto. Why
anyone would bolt on a hoop when it's not needed is beyond me, and in any
case will likely be an add-on (not guaranteed) to the new HAR. This is
independent of any hoop developed for HAR-1.Also, you know the upside down
mushrooms that form the lowermost metal on the HAR (HAR-1) ? Their purpose
is to make it easier and more secure to lash on a load without the HAB.
They're anchor points for bungee cords or whatever strap or cord you might
have. So you could use them to secure some favorite pots pans that won't
fit in the HAB. Although they're rounded, there's still a remote
plausibility that over time their edges will saw slashes in the lower
sleeve of the HAB, and so we have ordered some fancy rubber 'doms for them.
On my own HAB I just covered them with bar tape, which is 100 percent as
good, but Mark tends to think I'm a mickeymous slob when it comes to this
kind of solution, and since it is his design, we have the rubbers coming.
Then we'll do a search for who has ordered, and will mail them out with
superb instructions (and post on web). Also, the HAR can easily be made to
fit on some lower-rear eye forks, although it requires some tilting, which
improves aerodynamics by transforming the upper corner into a windcheetah,
like the prow of a ship in water. We don't go off half-cocked on this
stuff, but it's hard to account for all contingencies. We're sure t he
HARHAB 'bo is AOK on all two-eye RIV forks with the front braze-on EXCEPT
the W-built 700C HUNQAs. It's BOK on most RIVforks with frontal eyelets,
but requires a spacer to the rack clears the fork blade...and you're
rewarded for your I don't need no plug-n-play efforts with
microinfinitessimally improved aerodynamics. Now...back to thinking about
the Clem Smith Jr. ...(we can attach files now? Good to know...)*

The Hub Area Rack fits best on an eyelet above the fork tip and on

Most current Riv models have fork tips with double eyelets. If you buy a
brand new A Homer Hilsen, Hunqapillar, Cheviut, Hillborne, or Atlantis, you
are going to get double eyelet fork tips. If you buy a Roadeo or a San
 Marcos, you'll get single eyelets.

I have a Hub Area Rack, have had it for a while. It was an early
prototype that I talked them into letting me buy. For what it's worth, I
paid a fair bit more for mine that you guys are paying now, but I share
that as a reason for you to be happy, not as a reason for me to be sad.
Anyhow, now that there are bags for it, I've pulled it back out. Only now
do I realize that my old (2009) Hillborne does not have the upper eyelets
and my old (2010) Hilsen also doesn't have them. Only my Bombadil and my
Gunnar doublespeed has upper eyelets and mid fork braze ons. I wish I
could snap my fingers and have upper eyelets appear on my Hilsen and my
Hillborne so I could run this rack on those bikes as well. Oh well.

Anyhow, as a workaround, it looks like it would be possible to run the HAR
on the lower eyelets, but it might have a tilt to it. Not the end of the
 world but not ideal.

it, but I got in at least an hour of riding every day on a rental. There
are places to ride outside of Boise, but it's 10 degrees cooler by the
river and pretty darn hot elsewhere so I was happy to be where I was.

great riding 80 + miles with surprising cooler weather with a few thunder
showers towards the end. A fun weekend but not a lot of Riv action in the
sea of carbon. I rode my 71 Paramount saw very few bikes of interest...a
red custom tops the list. Would have loved to been able to check out the
bikes and meet the riders in the bay.

Post your rides and fun for the Virtual Entmoot here!

Reposting mine from a different thread, after realizing this likely makes
 more sense.

I made it out for a wee ride! (I had given up hope based on how my brain
was doing this morning, but the Etwater was restorative, so by 10:30 I was
unexpectedly and joyously out the door!). My wife dropped me off at 9,000
feet and I played around on the Pikes Peak trails for a wee bit, splashed
though some fun sloppy mud holes (always good to drink deep through your
roots going through those!), laid down in the meadows of flowers, watched
the clouds look by rode some more and figured out that's what my brain
could do if I wanted to make it back on my own. Enjoyed the nice long 7
mile descent back to my Entwater house. All in all much to hasty. Grin.

[RBW] Re: Hunq or bomb

2014-07-13 Thread DS
Agree with Bill's question: what is your saddle height? That is likely the
reason they recommend 51. Did you talk to Brian? If not definitely give him
a call, he's the Hunq guy, and can steer you on sizing. I normally ride 52
- 54 bikes and went with a 48cm Hunqapillar which I initially resisted,
caved, and haven't looked back since I got. Especially for mtn biking where
you don't want too high of a standover. My concern was not enough top tube,
but its been perfect for me. Can't speak on the tire size, except to say
that I got 2 wheel sets with the Hunq: one with 2.1 knobbies and another
with road 1.75 tires, I love the versatility, and will likely get another
26 frame to put the other wheels on when not in use. Kind of the opposite
scenario, but same reasoning. Tough decision, good luck!
