I'm not quite conservative enough to replace hard-to-find parts on a 20,000
mile derailer. You should be able to find a decent RapidRise XTR mech on
Ebay which will keep you pedaling for a few years.

[RBW] Re: jockey wheels for yesteryear shimano

2014-09-17 Thread Mobile Bill
In case anyone is counting the teeth on their jockey wheels, be aware I
made a bad assumption: While my older Deore shimano does have 10 teeth, the
slightly newer XT low normal sold by Riv does have the modern count of 11.
(Both needed new wheels --- sorry Joe, I just can't let go of a good
derailleur) Sorry for that bit of confusion. I'll apply the 10-tooth advice
to the older unit. VO has a nice set of 10-tooth replacements on the
website that are the correct diameter, but not currently in stock.

[RBW] WTB: Ruffy Tuffy Tires

Can someone cut me a deal on some Ruffy Tuffy tires, lightly used or new?
I'm very broke right now, but not so much that I'm going to turn my back on

The funny thing is that a friend of mine was involved in some sword
crafting and sparring with Neal and others over the past 7 or 8 years now.
They started out by building a lot of their swords and armor out of carbon
fibre, but have since gone to steel due to failures. I don't have much
more info than that, but carbon as an impact material is not as resilient
as our friend steel. Now someone can shoot that down, I'm sure :)

[RBW] Re: suggestions for a bike computer?

2014-09-17 Thread Sean Cleary
+1 for Garmin 200. It's amazing how well it works in all conditions. I used
it all last year including fat bike riding in temps ranging between zero
and 20 degrees. No problems.

I primarily bought it to eliminate having to recalibrate computer every
time I switched tires. Plus, I ride 6 bikes when including our tandem and
use only one Garmin. Used to use 2 Sigma computers, which I think are the
best, when I only had 4 bikes. Problem was, I often brought the wrong
computer when driving to my location, d-oh! Also, between the 2 computers I
could never remember when I last changed batteries so at least once a year
the computer would die on a ride.

The Garmin has built-in, USB or AC plug rechargeable battery and the
coolest computer map recall feature that I could ever want. I love looking
at new routes that I've ridden using Garmin Connect. It's a data lover's
dream but that's not a plus for me. Just the reliability.

[RBW] barend shifters on a bike with top tube derailer cables

2014-09-17 Thread Jim Bronson
I've taken the advice to heart of this group and others that the Soma
GR I built up recently is really not big enough for me. So I intend
on selling it and getting something else that is sized more
appropriately for me (6'7). I would like to move the parts form the
Soma over to whatever other frame I get.

I was looking at a frame that had both derailer cables mounted on the
top tube. It would be a semi-custom type deal, some parameters I
could change (geometry, brakes) but some not. I am interested in
acquiring said frame but I wanted to run barend shifters. Handlebars
would be 48cm Noodles. Workable, or not?

The manufacturer's intent is for the end user to use brifters, and the
($$$) expensive brifters with concealed shifter cable routing and to
run the housing all the way to the derailer, for the minimum amount of
exposed cable and maximum reliability. The use case for this frame is
either 27.5x2.1 knobbies or 650B x42 slicks with fenders, so they are
routing the cables that way to keep mud out of them.

However, I don't really want brifters.

One option I was thinking of was running the cable housing the whole
length of the handbars until near the stem and then into the top tube
routing. Any downsides to this? Are the bends too sharp?

Wisdom is highly sought.

I have thought maybe to seek a different framebuilder but the
attractive thing(s) about this builder is that the delivery timeline
is shorter than most, they have an excellent reputation, they're
working with me on the geometry/sizing and the price is right. Well,
that and they have been super nice to work with.

Re: [RBW] barend shifters on a bike with top tube derailer cables

2014-09-17 Thread Bill Lindsay

 You mean, like this?

Close. The only difference is that Jim means that the frame will have the
two shift cables run along the top tube, like some cyclocross bikes run
them. The answer to Jim is YES you absolutely can run your hypothetical
new frameset like that. Whether you run barcons or brifters will make no
difference. Either way, with continuous housing end to end, I'd recommend
buying the slickest cable+housing system you can possibly find. Generic
stuff might annoy you with drag.

I think I know which frame you are looking at, and if they are letting you
change disc brakes to cantilevers, maybe you could talk them into giving
you normal housing stops, too?

I figured the part he was concerned with was the routing along the
handlebar, from the shifter to the end of the bar wrap up near the
stem. After that, it's a big easy loop no matter whether it goes to a
cable stop (or guide) on the downtube, as with my Longstaff, or up to
the top tube. I have this routing on two bikes, and they both shift great.

and that housing would run all the way to the rear derailleur whether it

the housing all the way to the rear derailleur, no?

Whilst visiting Portland this summer, Ron H. made me an offer I couldn't

much of a good thing, but after thinking on it, how could I not have a

The orange one is set up as a mixed surface drop bar bike, biased toward
the dirt a bit with Clement MSO tires. This one is set up for city use,
with flat Jitensa bars, a clear powder coat, and fancy front and rear
bolt-on hubs.
It's pretty much as-is, except I swapped out for a B17 and added a
kickstand and frame lock. After this weekend's camping I'll put a front
basket on it and it will officially be my town bike, mostly replacing my
Schwinn Racer that has style points, but isn't really all that comfortable.

recall I already have an orange 60cm 'Beam. At first that seemed like too
much of a good thing, but after thinking on it, how could I not have a
 second one?!?!

2014-09-17 Thread Ted Shwartz

I used it for packing an uncoupled bike. The next bike will be SS
coupled. By undoing the front bolts on the MOTUS stem you can position the
handlebars in the box (in your case the SS case) as needed. Just make sure
that your cables have enough slack, or disconnects. This is very similar to
what I do for my tandem when I pack it in its bikepro case.

Oh, forgot to mention the frame lock. I love frame/cafe locks. Great way to
secure a bike that you're going to leave in a low-theft area. It's one of
the Abus locks, and they are crazy-heavy in a Teutonic sort of a way.
http://www.amazon.com/ABUS-Amparo-4850-Frame-Lock/dp/B001BADNRA/ I will
potentially have an extra one for sale, NIB if anyone is interested.

There are no bad questions! For my 89cm PBH, a 62cm frame is just a touch
too tall, especially with larger tires. My orange one is a 60cm and it's
really perfect. I'm using it differently (well, planning to as it's new to
me) than my orange one. Orange is going to be multi-surface bang around
bike. This one will be dedicated city bike. Standover clearance is less an
 issue for this set up.

One question, while looking at your Flickr account on the Green
Quickbeam, you mention Loved this bike. It's a 62cm, and just a touch to
big due to the tall bottom bracket. Bought slightly used in '05, sold only
 slightly more used in 2010.

Just out of curiosity what changed? Is it that you are using this bike
differently than the first one or does having the Jitensha bar make the
bike just feel better, where the bottom bracket height doesn't matter?

Answer if you want, let it be if you don't want to answer.

At any rate, I really like the new one and the finish is perfect for that
bike. Congratulations on the new bike.
