Re: [RBW] Re: Cross Interrupter Levers on Albas?
There are 22.2 mm cross/interrupter levers available. They come with shims for 23.8 mm. So they'd fit up. However, I can't imagine how they'd fit ergonomically. Cross/interrupter levers are curved away from the bar, to fit in the top of a drop bar. On a straight or Alba bar, that curve would make them a far reach from anywhere besides a very narrow area, near the clamp. They'd function fine and safely, but I don't know if you'd consider them an improvement. Looks like Garth made them work right next to the clamp, with reverse brake levers and thumb shifters. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/8o41wXlzR0Q But it doesn't look like they're accessible in the low aero position at the very front of the curves. (FQA: Albatross bars have 22.2 MTB/BMX grip diameter, Albastache bars have 23.8 road grip diameter.) -Tim On Sun, Nov 30, 2014 at 10:42 PM, Tony DeFilippo vpi...@gmail.com wrote: I feel like I've seen a picture of this done but I can't remember where... Re: [RBW] Re: Groupsets. Shimano, Campy, etc.
Just got back from the coldest ride of the year thus far, -26C without windchill (I mention the cold as it is troublesome for many different brands of rear hubs), and it looks like the Phil Wood pawls have finally stopped skipping. I disassembled the whole ratchet mechanism and degreased it, then gave it a small amount of TriFlow - just enough to give a thin coating. Now the freewheel has a quiet but pleasant sound (before it was basically silent) and has a reassuring, positive engagement every time. Hopefully this will be the trick that lasts the winter. [RBW] Re: Product placement coup by Riv in Consumer Reports review of Ford Transit Connect van
I took a pretty hard look at the commercial (no back seats) version of this for bike hauling duties last spring. It's a really practical package for such things. But it was terribly noisy with that big, unfinished box right behind you, and not very comfortable or luxurious. I'm approaching retirement and I want my next vehicle (which may well be my last new vehicle) to be both a good bike hauler and luxurious and comfortable and, well, nice. So I decided to pass on the Transit Connect Van in favor of a 2015 luxed-up GMC Canyon with a camper shell. It's a bit more money and not quite as economical but I sure like the ones I've test driven! ...Tom, the guy in this CR video review is a cyclist for sure. He's mentioned mountain biking several times in other videos, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that Atlantis were his... [RBW] Re: Post Thanksgiving Cranksgiving Dirt Paradise Ride.
I enjoy you folks who have easy access to that type of terrain. Around here, it's a very long drive to either dirt/gravel roads or gnarly single-track that is only suited to adrenaline junky shredders. Not really my thing. Whoever heads the local club seems to like that kind of riding because an LBS owner mentioned that the most technical single-track (and the closest to me...by far) has 4 miles of trail stuffed into an area more suited to 2 miles. He made the comment that there are so many tight twists and turns that you can never get up enough speed to worry about being injured in a crash. My one trip to the beginner trails further out confirmed this. I also think beginner is not an appropriate categorization of that trail and that the folks who built it suffer from being very good at riding and completely losing track of what is beginner level for the average person. :( On Saturday, November 29, 2014 9:21:34 PM UTC-6, hsmitham wrote: Three plus hours and twenty miles of pristine dirt single track around Carmel Valley in San Diego ' s North County was enjoyed by we five members of (SCAR) SoCal All Rounders. [RBW] Re: Shoe Recommendations for VP Thin Gripsters (or Grip Kings)
Thanks for all the feedback. The Five Tens and Chromes look interesting for sneaker substitutes. Found several online retailers selling last year's colors at a deep discount. Has anyone tried Five Ten Guide Tennies? Would love to find a retailer near Niles Canyon where I can try them on and see if they fit my wide feet (some of the reviews imply that they might not). [RBW] Re: Crystal Cove State Park overnight
Thanks for the nostalgic flashback, Curtis. Right out of college I used to live in Manhattan Beach and Belmont Shore and would ride south to Crystal Cove almost every weekend on the original GT Karakoram (with '80's crackle paint!). I think it was a 15 mile loop around Moro complete with some crazy, cactus-lined single track. It was a pretty good local training spot for those early mountain bike races at Big Bear and Arrowhead. Those were some of my fondest memories of cycling back when I could spend an entire day on a mountain bike riding 90+ miles. Nice to hear that it is still a solid cycling location. I'll have to try it again next time I'm down in LA. John On Sunday, November 30, 2014 8:10:31 AM UTC-8, Curtis wrote: After being inspired by Doug’s post on mini-tours I put together a round trip overnighter out of downtown San Diego. Catching the 8:30 am train for Irvine and then returning to San Diego at 3 pm the following day. Upon arrival in Irvine I followed the San Diego River Trail to the coast. While on the SDRT I had the second of two chance encounters. Doug was riding east with his Tuesday riding group as I was heading west. After a good conversation about past, current and future trips we went about our adventures. I found out later that his riding group ask Doug about the “homeless” man he was talking to. Had lunch along Newport Back Bay and then headed south with the intent of avoiding as much of PCH as possible. Found some wonderful views of the ocean as my path wound in and out of neighborhoods west of the PCH. Ran across a deli on one stretch of the PCH and picked up a sandwich for dinner. The options for avoiding the PCH diminished as I headed south. After a few miles Crystal Cove State Park was found a short distance east of PCH. I got a spot at Lower Moro, one of their primitive environmental camps. The climb up to Lower Moro was on fire roads. After a few stops I found myself the only camper at Lower Moro. This was to change after dark however. After setting up and enjoying dinner and the views the sun set rapidly. The view was amazing, miles and miles of ocean. There were several container ships setting just off shore. I guess they were waiting their turn in the port of Long Beach. Maybe some of the ships had Nitto parts on board. After sun set I heard voices on the road up to the camp and in a few minutes five guys showed up. It was fun to watch them set up their tent for the first time. They were high school seniors, an animal that I am familiar with, and where out for an overnight. Once the tent was set up a couple of them called their parents. The kids were quiet and by 7 pm I was asleep. On Wednesday I was up by 6 and ready to ride by 6:45 am. Decided to make a loop on the fire roads and headed up to Upper Moro. Upper Moro camp has more sheltered spots, but the view was not a grand. After reaching the ridge and taking the cut off trail to the canyon road I was back in the day use area in no time. I was to meet the train in Oceanside at 1:30 pm so south I went. The city of Laguna Beach needs to add some bicycle infrastructure. Absolutely no bike lanes in Laguna Beach along the PCH. The bike lane resumed once the PCH enters Dana Point. The rest of the trip was uneventful and at 2:30 I was back in San Diego. This is a trip that would be worth doing again. One change would be to arrive and leave out of Irvine. The PCH is not much fun. How great that we have such a great resource here in Southern California. For the owners of cassette hubs, if you have problems with the FW mechanism, can/do you not have a spare FW mech. on hand and replace it and deal with fixing it(or sending it to the mfr) or trashing it later so you don't have to send the entire wheel away ? Re: [RBW] Re: Groupsets. Shimano, Campy, etc.
In regards to the Phil Wood hubs, the problem is often with the ratchet ring which is threaded into the hub shell/body. The issue isn't often that the pawls themselves are faulty, they just can't engage with a faulty ratchet ring. And for whatever reason Phil Wood does not sell the tool to remove and replace the ratchet ring, even to bike shops. I've read many times that there was as bad run of ratchet rings several years back and this was a common replacement. On my hub, the ring and pawls all look fine to me, the issue is that the spring which pushes the pawls outward into the ratchet ring isn't very strong. A ticker oil like Tenacious oil, combined with colder weather is just too much for the spring to force the pawls into the ratchet and engage. [RBW] Re: Cross Interrupter Levers on Albas?
This really tested the grey matter. Here is a pic of what looks like an LHT off of Swift Industries flickr stream. There is a single interrupter lever on a set of Albas. I think a lot of X racers use just one interrupter on drop bar setups. My full endorsement for Swift bags, btw. [RBW] Re: Shoe Recommendations for VP Thin Gripsters (or Grip Kings)
Five.tens and wide feet are an iffy proposition. I've had one pair of my five.tens stretched, which helped a bit, and tried ordering the next pair one size up, which also helped a bit. They work so well that I've probably ignored that a bit more than I should, but did end up giving one pair to my son, whom the fit better than they fit me (he got an old bike on that basis, too...). The New Balance Minimus, on the other hand, fit very comfortably with a 4E last, but they're Summer shoes. I'm thinking of having a cobbler put a five.ten sole on an old pair of New Balance boots. I've been emailing back and forth with Phil Wood this morning on this very issue actually, after they noticed a discussion I was having on Twitter about lube for PW freehubs. I gave them a detailed run down of the problem and the three different lubes i've tried (phil grease, then tenacious, then triflow). I'll let you know what they say, but I'm betting it'll be 'send it in'... When this first started happening I did an extensive search online and found there were several others with the same issue, and some didn't receive their hubs back for several months. That is not an acceptable solution. The freewheel style hubs should certainly be less susceptible to problems as there are basically no moving parts in them. Pretty much the same as the single speed hubs. That said, I've had problems with one single speed rear hub and one front road hub. The rear single speed bearings went in the first six months for me, which was being ridden in some nasty weather, but still. When I replaced them with new Phil bearings according to the instructions on PW's website, the bearings were destroyed by the install process! I emailed PW to ask if I had done something wrong and they indicated the process by which I installed the bearings would result in bearing failure. I pointed out I used their own instructions from their website, and I was told the instructions were no longer valid... That was about three-four years ago. The instructions are still on their site... I replaced them a second time using a different method and they've been great ever since. Lots of wet and sandy weather, they continue to get smoother. It was an expensive lesson though, as PW bearings are not cheap. My front road hub has a fair amount of side-to-side play at the rim. I know a certain amount is normal for cartridge bearings, but it was enough that it would rattle quite loudly when bounced up and down. None of my others have that issue. Re: [RBW] Re: Groupsets. Shimano, Campy, etc.
As far as I know, the only reliable way to remove and install bearings is with the appropriate press. I've used simple DIY presses for pressing bearings into place, but for removing them you need either an arbor press or wheel puller. I believe PW uses NTN bearings which are indeed very high quality Japanese bearings. But they order them to their own specs, which no one outside the company really knows... [RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass
Lots of folks here on Compass tires! I had a set of Compass 26 x 1.75s on my LHT, liked 'em, and shod the Sam in Barlow Pass tires. Love love love the feel of these tire...nice and cushy, acceptable traction in the dirt, all around very nice...but not happy with puncture flats at a rate of one every 40 miles, and what I consider excessively quick wear on the rear tire. Jan talks up low pressure as the method for minimizing flats, and I know that environmental factors for punctures are very local in nature, but I ride in the Sierra foothills and Bay Area, run low pressures (around 50 psi), and get lots o' flats. I don't track mileage closely, but I added the tires in May 2014, and the rear tire was reading as 'halfway worn' as of September 2014 (Jan stipulates that when the longitudinal grooves disappear, the tire is halfway worn). Again, not sure of my mileage, but will certainly be less than 3,000 miles on the rear tire. I've toured very lightly with them (maybe 8 days all told), maybe that was a factor. Verdict is that I'll be going back to Panaracer Pasela Tourgards, or Marathon Supremes. I really liked Paselas for the price, and had very few flats on the Marathons. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. This insures that the pressure isn't just applied to the inner race, which will lead to damage and failure. Then I have the old bearing, followed by the PW axle spacer. Then it's simple - just thread the axle bolt into the hub and crank the new bearing in. The original PW instructions did not specify the water, just the old bearing. The axle spacer would push hard on the old inner race, which would in turn drive the new bearing into the shell from its inner race. That's just too much force on a part that was never intended to have forces applied. My version mitigates that issue and only cost me about 20 cents :) On Monday, December 1, 2014 3:12:02 PM UTC-6, Anton Tutter wrote: As far as I know, the only reliable way to remove and install bearings is with the appropriate press. On a straight or Alba bar, that curve would make them a far reach from anywhere besides a very narrow area, near the clamp. [RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass
Thanks for all of your responses. Based on what I have read, I am leaning toward giving the Stampede Pass tires a shot. Neil - you addressed the one concern that I still have - that the Stampede Pass will be more flat-prone than other tires. I'm sorry that the Stampede Pass have been so flat-prone for you. My reading online has not really found this to be a problem that many people mention with this tire. Anyone else have flatting issues with Jan's new tires - specifically the Stampede Pass model? A number of years ago I purchased a pair of Grand Bois tires (don't remember the specific model) for an old Trek 520 touring bike that I owned. I liked the way those tires made my bike feel when I rode it, but I do recall that the tires seemed to flat a lot more than other tires that I had used for similar riding. Who knows, perhaps I just had some bad luck. Anyway, I certainly do not mind fixing a flat tires. However, its not something that I would choose to do during a ride. I'd love to hear a few more data points on these tires. Sean On Monday, December 1, 2014 4:14:52 PM UTC-5, Neil wrote: Lots of folks here on Compass tires!
