[RBW] Re: Brake Cable Hanger - Fork Crown Mount

2015-02-13 Thread Tom Harrop
Jim,

That looks a lot more solid than the stamped steel headset-mounted hanger I
had. Paul's Funky Monkey is also available as a quill-mounted version.
Still, with 300 mm of headtube on my 68 cm Bombadil it's a long way to the
brake and I'm not sure if it would stop the shudder for me. I've had good
luck with the tektro part on my MTB.

And in another email, they said the diagonal was the same as the top-tube;
so, at least for my Bomba, the top, diagonal, and downtube are all straight

Re: [RBW] FS: Rivendell Custom Complete Bike....$550

2015-02-13 Thread Tim Gavin
1st gen Rivendells (Road Standard, LongLow, All Rounder, and the elusive
Mountain) had those long point fork lugs and Reynolds tubing stickers. 753
frame and 531 fork (753 fork blades were out of production), made by
Waterford. Supposedly a custom butt profile (Grant's been at this a while).

That said, I can't tell if this is a RS or LL, or a true custom. I don't
know if the first gen customs were also built by Waterford.

Regardless, it's a steal for a Riv with Frankenparts. I'd have chimed in

Re: [RBW] 61x60 c-c Riv Custom San Diego CL $550

2015-02-13 Thread Ryan Fleming
Not strictly a custom from that era...and I think Grant had the tubing
thicknesses tweaked as I recall. AR, Road standard (which this look like)
and expedition all came with 753 (with decals en Francais) with 531
forks...built by Waterford who were qualified by Reynolds for
silver-brazing. $550 is a nice price

 Kind of an odd combination.

Reynolds 753 (with a French label, no less!) is normally thought of as a

wouldn't have used all 531. Maybe the original owner was rail-thin. 7-speed
rear in a 130 BCD triangle...hmm. Maybe somebody needs to drop those bars,
really drop that saddle, put a cassette wheel in and get a modern-ish
 drivetrain on it.

Yeah. I think it's 62cm measured center-to-top. My custom is 60.2 cm
center-to-top. Nice bike at a great price. My Quickbeam is a 62cm. No need
for another 62cm in the stable.

[RBW] Re: Bar Ends vs Paul Thumbies? Anyone tried both?

2015-02-13 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have run both on drop bars. I ran the thumbies up top, close to the stem.
Thumbies work well and they are protected from falls. At the time I also
ran interrupter levers. I didn't bang my knee on the shifters and it worked
well. I prefer the bar end shifters just a smidge. They are quicker to
access. To shift the thumbies, you need to have your hands on the bar tops.

been in the bar end camp before and was bothered by the accidental shifts,
but I'm not sure how ergonomic or well thumbies would work. I've seen a few

I would rather do retroshift than thumbies on drop bars. But I think bar
ends are fine, yes I overshift sometimes accidentally, but it's not hard to
fix.

What a cool old Riv.

I love the half-step/granny triples, and actually prefer them to the
46/36/26 set up that Riv sells. However, I like to put slightly smaller
rings, so instead of a 50/46/28 (or so) I like a 48/42/28 (or so). And I
like the rings to be Bio-Pace.

So, now you see what kind of a person I really am. :)

release a bit rusty. Monochome paint? Front wheel looks out of place.
Rear wheel 48 spokes? Odd, but probably effective.

Minor quibbles really though. Nice ride. I'd own it, but it's not
close to my size. Steal of the year for $550 complete.

Re: [RBW] Broken Crank

2015-02-13 Thread Benedikt
The start of the break does look like it's along a machining line. In fact,
it almost follow's it perfectly however there is no step up there. There is
a step up on the crank just before it but the site of the fracture is a
smooth curved transition up to the spider with a little machining. I
examined the crank on the left side very closely and (IMHO) it's in great
condition. It does look and feel a bit more polished then the crank that
failed.

In the range of common bicycle tubing, the rule of thumb is one step in

I like the idea of a once over with a wire brush. Gets the debris off.

I keep a container of 40 wt (or higher) motor oil in the garage and use an

chain. Just enough to keep rust at bay.

Pay particular attention to the jockey wheels on the derailer. They tend to
get cruddy with crud when run in snow.

practising do it yourself brain surgery, I take out my bike and attack a

[RBW] Need to test ride a 54cm vs 58cm Hunq.

2015-02-13 Thread Mike K.
I have been eyeing the Hunqapillar for a few years and have decided to I
need to take a step closer to actually getting one: determining my size.

I'm a hair under 6' tall, and not sure if I qualify as long-legged or
not. PBH is 90. Pretty sure I'd be perfect for a 56 Hunq, but since that
little dream boat doesn't exist and I can't spring for a custom, I need to
figure out which one of the available models fits me best.

That being said, is there anyone on the list in Austin, TX who would be
able to let me test-ride your 54 or 58 Hunq?

Thanks, all.

Re: [RBW] Broken Crank

2015-02-13 Thread Ron Mc
I agree, it started right in the middle on the inside of the arm at the
machined fillet.

There is a step up on the crank just before it but the site of the fracture

examined the crank on the left side very closely and (IMHO) it's in great
condition. It does look and feel a bit more polished then the crank that

That looks like it may have failed along a machining line, with the crack
initiating where there was a step-up from the flat of the back of the arm
to the curve up to the spider. You can see another line between the arm
and the spider. It may have been enough to cause a stress riser,
especially if the alloy was not well-chosen. The VO site indicates it is
 7075 but does not indicate whether it is one of the heat-treated varieties;
this seems to be a pretty standard alloy for bike cranks.

These sorts of failure are very, very serious and can in fact be fatal,
if the crank breaks and dumps you in front of a moving vehicle- they almost
always break when you are standing on them. I would examine the
replacement crank very closely before installing it to check for machining
ridged, lines, etc. Looking at the photos on the VO site, the machining
looks quite clean and well-polished. You want to see no abrupt
 transitions.

All cranks do have a lifespan, in part because that is the nature of
aluminum- it cracks after enough repeated load cycles. Once a crack starts
on the face of the material, it propagates through the metal. A collection
 of crank failure photos:

[RBW] QB Co-Sponsors Wee bit of healing!

2015-02-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
This past week we’ve noticed a baby-step miracle healing, and as near as I can
figure, the Quickbeam specifically plays a role. It’s nuanced and I’ll
understand if you don’t read it, but I think it’s pretty amazing (doesn’t the
recipient of a miracle always?! Grin.) and have yet to fully grasp all the
ramifications if indeed it is what it seems to be.

One of my challenges with my bludgeoned brain has been (and still is, but
perhaps less so now) that when I encounter something that cuts through my brain
like a knife through butter (laundry scents, diesel engines, ATV’s, chain saws,
rude drivers, etc.), my adrenaline kicks in and bakes my brain and takes me
days or weeks to recover. It looks like that may have dramatically decreased.

I took an adrenaline hit earlier this week (not having any brain cushion, we
expected a week plus recovery). I day recovery, and I got out for a recovery
bike/run on that day!

Then yesterday, I was riding errands (three stops, a record for me!) and after
the Valentine’s Day bottle of wine store in the moronically played out parking
lot I headed home through a veritable gauntlet of egit drivers, including one
police SUV. It’s hard to be a biker in a smallish town not played out for bikes
at all in the winter running errands and using the bike in a practical way when
no one looks for people on bikes. Anyway, triggered my adrenaline off the scale
(I was safe the whole time, just very angry). Figured this would be at least a
week of recovery. Today? Recovery morning, wee 8 mile bike ride this afternoon.
Feeling adrenaline free now. This is bizarre. This has been over 13 years
coming.

If you’ve stuck with this this long, you may as well hear the theory and why I
suspect the QB is partly responsible. I used to avoid pushing my exertion level
above an aerobic threshold level because it triggered my adrenaline. I learned
to run up hills below that level so I didn’t trigger adrenaline. I couldn’t
explain to myself or anyone else why I wanted a QB, why I felt a QB was
different enough to warrant it being purchased and ridden beyond the
Hunqaillar. After all, it is a bike and really, is that so very different? Yet
I bought it anyway, dipping into our therapy account to do so (entering life as
fully as possible is brain therapy, so my therapy account is put to unique use
by most standards).

My theory is this: having one gear to ride up hills pushed me regularly past
that threshold that triggered my adrenaline. Yet it didn’t trigger it. Over the
past year, my body learned that stress is not cause for releasing adrenaline.
And somehow that seems to have helped with adrenaline recovery as well. How
cool is that?

Possible ramifications may include ability to withstand a few ATV’s on
bikepacking trips without having to bail out early? I don’t know. But with my
wife sick with the flu we all had earlier, I’ll likely be doing more errands
this weekend. Grin.

So perhaps this mini-miracle is co-sponsored by Quickbeam, Rivendell, and
Grant. Grin. may God startle you with joy!

Patrick

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Custom Complete Bike....$550

2015-02-13 Thread Gregg
I called it a custom because the original owner told me that back in '96,
he called Grant and gave him his measurements and the bike was made for
him. He said that back then it cost him $1700! So it may not be a custom or
it may not, just don't know. The original owner is 80+ years old and had to
give up cycling because of a leg injury. He used this bike to bike all over
Europe following many of the tours and called out mountain passes that I'd
never even heard of and I've lived in France for years. It was a sad moment
to take the bike away from him at least for me, he seemed like he didn't
care but with all those memories tied into this bike, I didn't believe him.
I think he's in a lot of paint with his leg.

[RBW] Re: QB Co-Sponsors Wee bit of healing!

2015-02-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lungimsam, early on after my 8th+ concussion, I was told I needed cognitive
therapy at least three times a week. I also did vestibular therapy.
Essentially these therapies all tried to recreate the circumstances of life
in an artificial environment and try and get me to do what I couldn't do. I
saw multiple problems with this approach. First, the cost to get me to,
through, and home from each therapy session was significant. My wife had to
drive me, taking her away from her work at home for at least three hours
(90 minutes of driving plus an hour there), my cost in brain energy (I
didn't have enough for the rest of the day, and needed time to recover for
a week plus, but was being seen every other day during the week), and the
cost of repeatedly focusing all that brain energy on what I couldn't do. If
it helps, the main issues I experience with my brain injury are various
cognitive deficits, including little short term memory, variable brain
fatigue due to inability to filter out sensory input, and constant
neurological vertigo on two axes (like being in a twirling, twisting seat
in a roller coaster that goes any direction at any time).

I realized I had the perfect therapy environment at home: young kids
often creating chaos. I created a sanctuary so I had a place to go and
recover as needed (it also became the place I learned to go before my TBI
rage hit, when I was getting over stimulated). I also focused on things I
could do rather than things I couldn't. a minute or two with my kids (this
has expanded over the years to being up to an hour at times with the wee
ones, we have four now, and doing multi-day bikepacking trips with the
older ones), hiking, running trails, and biking remote roads and trails,
writing, reading, etc. What I discovered is that by focusing on what I can
do and what I love doing, I engage my brain, accomplish something real, and
also push the periphery of my capacity, developing new pathways. Also, my
vestibular therapist early on said he'd done all he could for me and the
best thing I could do was continue to hike my mountain trails.

I've come to call this approach chronic brain injury recovery (though it
seems to apply to any chronic health issue), and now understand that the
medical world is completely geared for acute care of trauma, including
their therapy, which is why it is geared and focused wrong for chronic
recovery. At some point early on (3-24 months) in an injury like this,
there is a shift from acute recovery to chronic recovery, and the approach
also needs to shift. Instead, the system keeps people in acute therapy
too long, everyone gets frustrated by their lack of progress, and they get
told their healing has stopped, they're as good as they'll get, or that
they're regressing. Nonsense!

The end result of this approach after 13 years is a cumulative effect from
a multitude of baby-step miracles that individually may not seem like much
(though they each have made an enormous impact of our family's quality of
life), but looking back at where I was 13 years ago the difference is
stunning. A lot of the improvement is due to coping strategies (I can run
and bike despite the vertigo not because it has improved any, but because
of deeply developing my proprioceptive system by going barefoot.), but a
lot of these improvements are organic to my neural structure either healing
or developing around the damaged areas. I look forward to seeing where the
next 13, 26, 41 years take me! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
