Don't sell that Atlantis, you'll regret it. Or sell it to a friend who will
sell it back to you once you've come to your senses.

[RBW] Re: Tall bags decaleurs

I have a 63cm Hilsen with a Nitto Mark's Rack, large Berthoud bag and Berthoud
H-121 decaleur on the Technomic stem. I really like the setup. I was worried
that the attach/detach from the decaleur would be a pain but after doing it a
couple of times it was no problem at all. Steve's paper clip pin is a good
idea, though. I have a space of around 31cm from the rack to the top of the
handlebar so the bag is just below the bar, which is what I wanted. I
previously had the Sackville BarSack on and with the handlebar mount the top of
the bag is just above the bars. I ride a lot with my forearms resting on the
bars and I smashed the bag down like that.

Has anyone else tried the 55mm Speed Kings? I see they're made of a
different rubber compound than the 42's, so I'm curious how the ride will
be different.

[RBW] Re: Tall bags decaleurs

2015-04-22 Thread David Banzer
Like Andrew, I've had a good experience with *one* VO headset decaluer.
I'll qualify the one to mean I've purchased subsequent VO decaleurs and
the prong fit was way off to the point that they needed some adjusting and
I didn't bother installing them. Maybe I just got lucky on my first. I used
that with a tall Acorn bag (there is a possibility I might be selling) and
never had any issues.
That said, if you go with a bag that has velcro attachments on the bottom,
or provisions for a strap on the bottom, then it's kind of a non issue as
the bag can't possibly fall off.

Thanks Dave, the Jackson build has me very excited and is keeping me from
obsessively checking the status of the Saluki powdercoating... the DT

If I make it I'll post some pictures.

The Bombadil is a very nice dark royal blue (my description, not sure the
official desig). It isn't really metallic but it does photograph that way,
in bright sun it is always very contrasty.

That SON taillight looks sweet, SON stuff in general looks great but I
can't quite justify the price delta since I already have two Shimano Dyno
wheels built up. The Spanninga is already in the garage anyway, and I
installed one on my Mom's Schwinn 'Hint-O-Mint' cruiser last year that I

Re: [RBW] Re: An even fatter (F)atlantis!

2015-04-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, that's useful because I am thinking (just thinking) of getting
custom lowriders for the green Curt Riv, which now serves as my grocery
bike and which doesn't handle heavy and exclusively rear loads with the
aplomb of the recently sold Ram.

I hope to have various brazing done on the Curt, which already has a custom
rear rack; so unobtrusive front low riders that can carry up to 10 lb a
side might to supplement the rear panniers might help maintain the volume
but improve the ride. We'll see.

I expect that the Sam Hill I owned, which wandered horribly with just rear
loads on steep hills while seated and twiddling, might have done much
better with some of that weight put up front -- in fact, I had low rider
front bosses retrofitted to the SH's fork but never really tested the bike
with a front load. Oh well, live and learn.

limit, when the bike is unloaded. The problem gets considerably less
bad if I move the saddle forward and if I lean forward when climbing.
It's annoying, though, because none of my Rivendells ever exhibit the
 problem.

Michael,
Scroll down the page to the Compass hardware pics.
 https://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/10/27/decaleurs-for-aluminum-stems/
The first hardware pic shows the decaler set for standard aluminum stems
that take a hexagonal nut on their stem clamp bolts.
The second one down shows the wedge piece for the Pearl/Tech Deluxe stems,
which have that wedge shaped nut.
On the decalers, the wedge shape isn't threaded, it's just a form fitting
insert, then the spacer, then a regular nut on top of everything.

forgive any ignorance. I tried to provide 1 pic from the very bottom of
the base of the stem and then one from the min insertion point. Feel free

Nitto Dirt Drop 10 ( i think it is the 10 and not the 8; see pics if that
will help clarify the size). Clamp size is 26.

 Nitto Technomic: 25.4 Clamp Size

Specialized: Clamp size 26. This stem has a hole in it for what I assume
 is for a cable.

  I invert the areopress put the plunger at about the 2;
Add 1 Aeropress scoop of coffee.
Add water almost to the top
 Stir a few times
 Attach filter (tightly)
Let sit (timing from when water was poured in) for 60-90 seconds
 Flip and plunge.
Add hot water to coffee cup so there is a full cup.

I don't measure the coffee or the water in grams or worry about being too
exact with the timing and it still makes a pretty darn good cup of coffee.
I use lighter roast coffee and grind the beans relatively fine. I am not
super precise in the how I grind the beans using my cheap grinder. I think
the most important element is good coffee beans (I like Intelligensia).

I have had a couple setups where the 4 tooth spread with the Dingle cog was
matched by a 4 tooth spread in the rings, so the axle position stays almost
the same in high gear and low gear. Mostly that was for my OCD (and fender
line).
The Quickbeam as shipped had an 8 tooth spread in the rings (32/40), and a
single cog (18t). The long angled dropouts (track ends) took up the chain
slack.

to reposition the rear wheel. I'm not sure how well that worked in actual

Also, be aware that Dos requires a 9-speed-or-narrower chain to fit

So I ordered the Bertoud bag and decaleur, along with some pari-motos from
Boulder bike. They seem more ready to pass along the savings from the
strong $ than most other retailers.

after doing it a couple of times it was no problem at all. Steve's paper

rack to the top of the handlebar so the bag is just below the bar, which is
what I wanted. I previously had the Sackville BarSack on and with the
handlebar mount the top of the bag is just above the bars. I ride a lot
with my forearms resting on the bars and I smashed the bag down like that.

[RBW] Re: Tall bags decaleurs

2015-04-22 Thread Michael Leven
Michael,
Compass sells three types of Decaleur:

1. The for Pearl version works with stems designed with a horizontal bolt and
triangular wedge nut on them. Like the Pearl, the new N.P., and Technomic
Deluxe. They have that wedge nut on them instead of a standard hexagonal nut.

2. The for aluminum stems version is for standard Technomics and the like
with a horizontal bolt with a standard hexagonal nut on them.

3. The Grand Bois Decaleur is a different design, made for the 2-clamp bolt
GB stems that Compass sells. Compass sells the drop kit designed for them too.
I think they also sell period accurate clamp bolts for them, too. I think they
have conical heads.

Why are decaleurs specific to pearl technomic stems? Don't they have the

Re: [RBW] Re: aghast by Rivendells aeropressing technique.

2015-04-22 Thread Dan Abelson
Bobby,

I too was somewhat frustrated by the precision of several of the methods.
The less precise method I use that works fine is an inverted one (I was ok
with the method in the aeropress instructions but it uses a lot of coffee
beans).

 I invert the areopress put the plunger at about the 2;
Add 1 Aeropress scoop of coffee.

Horses for courses. I like the VO headset-mounted decaleur because it
works for me and it's *cheap*. I've *never *had a bag come off, but then I
use the rack's tombstone as well. But the adjustment *is *very limited; if
it works on your bike, it will work well. But if it's not a good fit (part
of that fit depends on your bag, and where on the bag you mount the
decaleur) it's likely to not work at all.

2015-04-22 Thread Ron Mc
have the same one on my daughter's upright and we use it to change between
a Q/R wicker basket and an Acorn mini-rando.
The difference with that design is the entire torsion of the bag is carried
through the tombstone, fork bolt and lower stays, while a headset or stem
mounted decaleur eliminates the torsion.
Not so significant on the mini-rando bag, but the bags Mike is discussing
are 11 inches tall.
