I will admit that the time I rode the loop road, it was probably 8-9

This is a beautiful little ride nearby on newly paved roads:

Very interesting comparisons and ideas about effects on speed and handling.

Wonder what would happen if you put ultralight 650c rims and tires on your bike
to make for light wheel weight and see if they spin up faster.

Or, perhaps, a frame designed for 700c won't work its best with another wheel
size than what it was designed for?

Re: [RBW] In praise of the Big Apple 26

2015-07-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I put many miles on 26X2.35 and 700C X 2.35 Big Apples, both Regular and
Liteskin. They roll very very well for their anvil-like weight (though you
certainly feel them on the hills) and they are the one tire I've ridden in
all my life that can survive our bosque goathead hell without sealant!

I've come out of a trail with literally scores of goatheads in the BA's,
front and rear, stopped, flicked them off, and continued riding with no
loss of air.

They're not absolutely proof against the thorns, but with standard tubes
they were as troublefree almost as my new tubeless F Freds with sealant.
They are wonderful tires. I'd get a thorn puncture once every 70-100 miles
or so, which around here is PDG.

(OTOH, the regular 29er 60 mm BA weighs 900 grams while the FF weighs 360
grams )

On Wed, Jul 15, 2015 at 10:46 AM, WETH erlhous...@gmail.com wrote:

The rear Schwalbe Big Apple 26x2.15 flatted overnight--a first after
thousands of miles on this and a previous set of Big Apples. After
removing the wheel, I inspected the tire for any obvious damage and
discovered a staple/wire embedded in the tire. After decreeing proudly to
my wife that I had discovered the problem, I removed the tire and tube to
discover to my amazement that the staple had not penetrated through the
tread into the tube! That is one tough tire! Of course this left the
mystery as to the cause of the flat. I felt nothing else sharp inside the
tire, so I inflated the tube again. I heard the hiss of escaping air on
the opposite side of the tube from the staple. Upon inspection, it appears
the Sunlite 26x1.9-2.35 tube had worn out. Ironically (?), last week I had
discussed with my LBS the shelf life of tubes.
I had thought about trying different tires when these wore out, but now I
am not so sure! The Big Apple, though a bit slow, is a tough and
comfortable tire. Photos to document the experience:

[RBW] Re: Seattle-to-Portland this weekend?

2015-07-15 Thread rob markwardt

Nice report Andy. I agree it's kind of a madhouse but it's a fun trip. I
ride in group about twice a year and nearly all my rides are unplanned with
no real destination so it's a complete change of pace for me. I did it in
one day which was my longest ride ever. I paid for it that night and the
next day but I'm pretty much back to normal except for a sore Achilles
heel. How guys do PBP and longer rides is beyond me.

The weather was a nice change from the recent heat wavelow 70's, some
drizzle, cloudy with mild to moderate head winds. There were some nice
changes to the course this year. The route through McChord/Lewis military
base was a wonderful change replacing the worst section of the ride. I
also made a 14 mile side-track and rode down the empty Interurban trail
instead of riding through the second worst section…the despised West Valley
highway. No stoplights, no crowds...nothing but a lot of baby rabbits!
Also a new trail between Centralia and Chehalis was an improvement.

The Rivendell performed flawlessly with no problems. The new Compass tires
are as good as advertised...very soft, smooth, however, I did experience my
first flat in 6 STP's. It was a big chunk of glass that likely would have
punctured about anything so I can't complain. The tire still has a small
hole that looks kind of vulnerable so I'll boot it from the back and hope
for the best.

I took a pretty moderate pace with the goal to avoid longs stops and keep
moving. Finished in 14:45 which was about 15 minutes longer than
estimated. I did have the puncture though and also stopped to help a guy
out….he fixed his flat but didn't know how to put the wheel back on.

I saw the aftermaths of three crashes. Two looked pretty minor but the
other one had rider was dusty and scratched up from head to toe. I thought
the behavior of the vast majority of riders was very good. I was ahead of
the big mass of two day riders though so I think most the people I was near
were fairly experienced. Saw one a-hole in Centralia throw water at a car
that was passing him…he said he was getting squeezed but I was behind him
and he was way over to the left. That seems to be my biggest beef….if you
are passing do it and get over! I'm kind of amazed nobody gets killed on
the highway in Oregon where cars and truck are flying by at freeway speeds.

Any it was a fun day but I'm ready to get back to my normal rambles. A
few pics here:

[RBW] wtt: Rock Lobster CX for Atlantis!

2015-07-15 Thread Eric
Looking for a 58cm Riv Atlantis so I'd offer my Lobsta CX for trade!

Steel CX frameset - 3 water bottle mounts
Set up for canti brakes
Enve CX Fork - painted to match!
Tapered steerer
Chris King headset
Chain hanger
Team green paint

The farthest I got to building this up was installing a crankset wheels
but otherwise it's brand new. There is a few chips in the paint on the Enve
fork (see photo) but otherwise beautiful. I also applied Framesaver to the
frame when I took delivery.

I tried to mount the WTB Nano (700x40's) on here but they were just too
tight. You could totally run a 38, though.

Measurements:

Seat Tube: 52cm (CTC) / 55cm (CTT)
Actual Top Tube: 54cm / Effective Top Tube: 54.5
Head Tube: 14.5cm
Down Tube: 63cm
Chain Stay: 42.5cm
Drop: 7cm
HT Angle: 71 degrees
ST Angle: 72.5 degrees
Stand Over: With the 32's in the last photos it was approx 31.5

I also have the frame drawing from Paul so let me know if I can give you
any other measurement. Paul's wait is 7 months and this cost over $2k new.

Re: [RBW] Re: Necro-stock! A shop with a new Rambouillet frame in stock?

2015-07-15 Thread Bruce Herbitter
All the Rams were made at Toyo. They were then sent out to other Japanese
shops for painting. Most were sold as framesets with headset, but a fair
number were sold as a complete bike with a particular parts kit that RBW
had a good price on. The earliest orange ones had more pointy lugs. Some
early ones had rear brake bridge anomalies. The most of any color are the
French Blue. That was also the color with 50 and 52 cm frames built for
26 wheels. Total run between all three colors was somewhere between 1200
and 1300 bikes, according to an email I got from RBW way back when. They
have heat treated down tubes and chain stays. medium weight tubing. Rear
spacing is 132.5 so they can accept several hub sizes. Max spec tire size
is 37 mm, but I think people have shoehorned 38s on. I have 2 wheel sets,
one with 32s and one with 37s. The 37s ride nicely, but you have to let
air out to get the tire past the brake caliper.

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-15 Thread Kieran J
If your question relates to the relative weight of the two wheelsets I used
and how they affected my ultimate overall impression, I would say they do
merit comparison. As much as you can call a shoot-out between 2 different
things 'apples to apples', anyways.

The 700c wheels are 32H Ultegra 6500/H plus Son TB14s, whereas the 650b
ones are 32H Grand Bois HF hubs mated to A23s. So my conversion wheels are
not cheap weighty bricks but rather very light units with extremely smooth
bearing action. The tires I used were Jack Brown Greens and Compass BSP in
the standard casing.

Fusion on Campy Chorus most recently before converting and now I'm running
Soma Weymouth on Deore hubs. Probably gained at least half a pound in
wheel weight, plus the non-Ultralight LoupLoup Pass are heavier than the
Grand Bois 700x30(32) I was running before. So in my case I have not ever
made a true apples to apples comparison with similar wheel and tire

Besides the cush factor, the Compass LoupLoup Pass also last way longer
than the Grand Bois did, I was only getting about 750 miles out of a rear
tire on the 700x30 but with the 650Bx38. And I do love the cush.

So for me, it's worth it. YMMV.

I've got the rims and hubs to do a conversion on my Redwood also, but
first I am going to run some 700x38 Barlow Pass for a while that I picked
up for FREE() locally for a while. Sans fenders, of course, as I don't

accelerate and just didn't glide nearly as well anymore. I noticed this on
hill approaches particularly, as the bike lost momentum quicker and it took
 more effort to spin up.

My 650b experiments are ongoing and hardly clinical in nature, but the
exercise definitely contributed to solidifying my preference for the
700x32-38mm range. Naturally, this means relatively higher PSI and lower
cush factor but speed and agility is possibly more important to me than a
lusciously compliant ride. I think a lot of people value the cush and may
be prepared to accept a certain degree of compromise to achieve that.
Others have reported little to no loss in performance after the switch.

It's worth pointing out that I am 6'4 with bikes that can accommodate
fat 700c tires well in proportion. I can certainly imagine riders of
average or small size bikes seeing the advantage in converting a 700x28
bike when relative wheel proportions could present problems.

Most of you know Seth Vidal, who frequented RBW list and who was killed
in a hit and run two years ago. One of the things he liked was the ride
reports. He'd share them with me and we'd plan rides.

I joined the list a few months after he died, mostly just to update the
group, but I've also read some of your ride reports, and they were very,
very helpful on getting me back on the bike and rediscovering a new, but
different, kind of joy that only bicycles can provide. I thought I'd
contribute as well. It's also my small way of saying thanks for your
 support, intentional or not.

I've organized rides of remembrance on the day he died, and I rode his
Hilsen in both cases. This year, a friend of mine borrowed my QB for the
memorial ride so two Rivs were well represented. :)

The ride was roughly 2 miles- it was just a slow roll through the
neighborhood to the area where Seth was killed, to where the ghost bike
was, have a moment of silence, and then through a very short trail along
Ellerbee Creek and back to the starting point. We went to a pub later. The
most amazing thing was that when we all lined up in front of the ghost
bike, traffic actually slowed down (it almost never does- it's a 35 mph but
since it leads to highways on both ends, most folks go 45-50).

I led the ride, but I am a terrible ride leader. Last year, I rode really
fast ahead of the pack and it became a joke (after years of riding the
tandem and having Seth tell me to pedal harder, it's kind of hard to break
the habit). This year a friend took me for an impromptu 14 mile ride the
day before and another friend made sure I had a few beers in before the
ride. I apparently still went too fast, and someone kind of had to chase me
down to make sure I waited for the group. And honestly, I tried to slow
down. It's not my fault Rivs are extremely efficient machines.

And I would have taken photos, except I managed to destroy my camera with
the water from the bouquet of sunflowers (Seth's favorite) that I left at
the ghost bike. So I've collected others' into this album:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157655728650855

Keep riding and writing. You never know who you might reach.

Nice report Andy. I agree it's kind of a madhouse but it's a fun trip. I
ride in group about twice a year and nearly all my rides are unplanned with
no real destination so it's a complete change of pace for me. I did it in
one day which was my longest ride ever. I paid for it that night and the
next day but I'm pretty much back to normal except for a sore Achilles heel.

I also
made a 14 mile side-track and rode down the empty Interurban trail instead
of riding through the second worst section…the despised West Valley highway.
No stoplights, no crowds...nothing but a lot of baby rabbits! Also a new
trail between Centralia and Chehalis was an improvement.

I took a pretty moderate pace with the goal to avoid longs stops and keep
moving. Finished in 14:45 which was about 15 minutes longer than estimated.
I did have the puncture though and also stopped to help a guy out….he fixed
his flat but didn't know how to put the wheel back on.

A few
 pics here:

An alternate suggestion if the stem swap doesn't fix it:

I used B17's and started to get low back pain and after a year of
struggling to figure out why it hurt when I rode, I got a sprung Flyer
saddle, and that nullified all the road shock and my back doesn't hurt
anymore. It was the road shock going up into my low back through a regular

For the past two weeks, my wife and I have been on a motorcycle trip out
west, hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies. Many times as my feet
started to hurt or I was trudging down an endless downhill, I was wishing
for my bike. But my Atlantis was back home in a state of disrepair - the
rear phil hub had been constantly skipping pawls for the past six months
despite several complete rebuilds by my LBS with the guidance of Phil Wood
techs. On top of that, my nearly-new White Industries road crank arms were
mysteriously coming loose on a regular basis, as if they had been
improperly installed (though I have several pairs of these crank arms and
have used square taper forever, never had any problems before, installed
 according to supplied instructions).

When I got home I was so happy to see Phil Wood had sent me a brand new
hub, despite it being off warranty and despite the fact that my hub passed
every test they threw at it. It 'should' be perfectly fine they said, but I
was sent a shiny new hub anyway. Incredible!

Then I checked my email and saw that White Industries has also mailed me
a replacement pair of cranks, which should be arriving any day now. What a
 day!

To celebrate I popped on a spare rear wheel and rode out to my favourite
spot to watch a huge prairie thunderstorm rolling in. It felt great to be
back on the bike and I'm excited to rebuild the rear wheel with the new
hub. Very happy with the service I received from both companies.

[RBW] Re: FS: Bike Friday Pocket Rocket 58cm $1400 shipped CONUS

2015-07-15 Thread Christopher Murray
Lots of interest and questions but no takers as of yet. With an incoming bike
and upcoming trip, I am going to lower the price to $1150 shipped Conus. Boxed,
shipped, and insured at the LBS. If there are no takers I will keep it. It is a
beautiful bike and the pictures don't do it justice. With shipping and packing
this would be close to $2500 from Bike Friday and that doesn't include the post
or cages.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Searching for a cheapo saddle with B17 like fit

2015-07-15 Thread Kieran J
Were these not fairly narrow in the rear section though? I had one SST.X
and it was OK but not nearly the same shape or width as a B17. Maybe mine
was one of the later variants.

Another worth considering is a Vetta SL from the 90's. Quality lightweight
saddle with a wide cantle area.

They come fairly cheaply online:

+1. I have WTB SSTs on 4 bikes, they work nicely for all-day rides. Even

Re: [RBW] Re: Searching for a cheapo saddle with B17 like fit

2015-07-15 Thread Joe Broach
Count me as one who finds the WTB SST pretty close to a B17. You can't
really compare plastic and leather saddle widths directly because of the
leather saddles' frames and rivets. The SST is about 145mm wide, about
identical to a b17 between the rivets.

I haven't taken mine on a long ride yet, but for a 6 mile commute, it's a
great b17 stand in. They came on some complete surlys at some point, so
shops might have take offs.
