Re: [RBW] Re: Trigger Shifters?
Hi Steve, I've had MTB trigger shifters mounted on A-bars, and they work fine. IIRC they were the integrated kind attached to brake levers. A little clunky looking, but function worked well. You didn't mention the option, but I prefer thumb shifters to either trigger or bar end. As for bar end, I like the SRAM X9 model that has a thumb push for both up and down shifts vs. most others that have a thumb push to pull cable and then finger pull to release. I don't think they have this in their current models, as this is older nine speed. My saluki has a longer TT shorter stem than my ram. As a result it has no TCO, while the ram has a touch at the fender. I have used Shimano Rapid Fire on my hardtail since the early 2000s. Only XT and XTR. Both are great. Although, as with any indexing system, the front der adjustment can be tricky. [RBW] Re: Trigger Shifters?
Having used both Shimano brifters and their BE indexed shifters I found I much prefer the BEs. Although I should add that my experience with the brifters - a couple of years of commuting was 10 years ago. I found the rear brifters worked well, while the front, with a triple, needed constant readjustment. I did not like the ergonomics of the brifters, which require the rider to push with the finger tips. The BE have a number of advantages. The motion is exactly what fingers have evolved to do; the motion is very intuitive - lifting either lever lifts the chain vice versa; the position of the lever tells you what gear combination you are in; and, if something comes out of alignment during a ride you can switch to friction. I have not had the difficulties with 9 speed friction that others on this list have encountered. I try to use the shortest RD cage I can; buy quality cassettes chains; and replace them when they are worn. I prefer friction because it is faster than indexed shifting. I am very experienced with friction. Riding here in Vermont offers lots of radical grade shifts and puts a premium on the ability to shift across the range very quickly and I find friction does that better. I have indexed BEs on the tandem but don't like the hesitation I get before the chain moves. I would think that Albatross bars would keep your hands pretty near the BEs so that also argues against the added expense of brifters. Deacon, hopefully not sand with goat heads in it. I keep a clean rag in my bike bag, but so far this year my only mechanical failures have been a loose misaligned kickstand and a loose rack bolt. I probably shouldn't say any of that out loud. I recently retreated all of our saddles and ended up with brown stains on the bottom of kaki shorts. [RBW] Rambouillet Touring Upgrades

[RBW] Re: questions about buying /selling a bike on this group
Bill, This is an open group accessible to (almost) anyone, so of course you must be careful, there is no official help from the group if something goes bad so your best defense is to be on alert. In general most of the buying and selling is between established members so it's pretty safe. For less established members i would take a few extra precautions, asking to talk on the phone, verifying their address/personal information (disturbingly easy to do in with google) to make sure everything lines up. Paypal does offer some protection when you pay for goods (not 'personal/gift') but it can still be dicey so i wouldn't depend solely on that. In the end, use your gut, if a deal feels too good to be true, or something feels off, walk away. [RBW] Re: questions about buying /selling a bike on this group
Hi Bill - A lot of us on this list have known one another since the days of usenet. I can think of at least a dozen people who I'd just send something to and know I'd get a check back from them. By the same token, this is also a publicly searchable group, and there is a possibility that someone with nefarious intent might contact you who has not actually been active on the list. That being said, there are many more lucrative ways to run scams than posting a for sale listing here, (including wait for it to be passed through the queue if you aren't active on the list) and then bilking the sender. It's one of the reasons I don't mind a slight bottleneck in the system, and it's also one of the reasons I don't upgrade anyone's status if all they have done is post FS/FT listings. The first thing I'd do as a buyer would be search for the person here on the group archives and see how long they've been active and the types of posts they generally make. If it's the only post a person has ever made, I'd do some things to protect myself. Protecting myself might include using paypal - because they do give you recourse. It might be getting someone else on the list to go look at an item, so you can get a general feel for the deal. It could be as simple as agreeing to talk on the phone at a certain time, seeing if they are easy to get ahold of and trusting your gut response to their trustworthiness in the conversation. Getting photos you know are real (have them take a photo with a specific page of the newspaper shown). Fast and complete responses to questions. Those will give you a pretty good insight into who you are dealing with. Finally, having a clear understanding of what kind of right of refusal you expect would be important. If the quality doesn't match the photos, what happens? If you kinda-sorta-wanta see the bike in person but might ship it back, you should figure out who pays for that - and what level of shipping insurance should be included. If it shows up at your place after the shipper drove a forklift over it - what happens? And giving one another the benefit of the doubt helps too - sometimes a seller gets bogged down with work, health, life and other stuff and just doesn't get the package out the door in time. It doesn't mean they are running a scam. I get about 1 or 2 emails per year asking if I know so and so who hasn't shipped something yet. In every case, it's self-resolved The one true scam I can recall sounded like there were all kinds of warning signs right from the get-go. And - you know it was coming, right? - just to be clear: any transactions you engage upon are done so at your risk. - Jim / group admin cyclofiend.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. So, I'm somewhat new, and I've probably bought enough stuff off the list to build a couple bikes. I've also hooked up a friend with a complete bike/large purchase. 99% of the transactions were smooth. Had one bad one, from a pretty consistent contributing member (who has since disappeared). 100$ lesson learned. The key to PayPal is to do it as a paying for goods and services transaction. Friends and family offers zero protection, as I found out. For a big purchase, you might get pushback from the seller because they will have to pay a paypal fee that can be avoided in friends and family. Offering to cover that fee is useful in making everyone happy and covering yourself. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to buy and sell here. It's a good place. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: The need for black shorts/today's ride (non-epic). Wool versus synthetics. Cotton jersey for postage.
Y'know, on my errand bikes -- the currently captive Riv #3, hopefully being powdercoated right now after many and varied brazed-on additions, and, formerly, the Ram -- I had a 4 section of pipe insulation more or less permanently attached to the bottom of the seat tube, under the bottle cage, to be removed and used as padding when locking the bikes to metal posts. But the gofast disdains any such quotidian utilitarian measures. Re: [RBW] questions about buying /selling a bike on this group
Bill: First, welcome. Second: I've bought many, many items from list members and have never been disappointed. This list, and the iBoblist too, are notable for their civility and for the smooth transactions amongst members. That said, you can always ask for payment via a medium like Paypal, which has (I don't know the details; never had to resort to them) sanctions against dishonest transactions and protection for those who use it. Perhaps you might observe the list traffic for a few months to get your own idea of the nature of the list and the quality of the members. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet Touring Upgrades
John: I don't know the vintage of your Ram, but the 58 cm blue Ram I owned had clearance for 35 mm Kojaks with a lot of empty air around all sides. I am confident I could have installed fenders over those 35s. (Note: I never measured the true width of those Kojaks, but FWIW, they were mounted on older Open Pros and my brakes were some sort of Shimanos with 57 mm reach. I had photos of this setup, but deleted them when I sold the Ram.) As for racks: Tubus, Tubus, Tubus. I say this as someone who as spent $$$ on customs (because customs are prettier). My Ram had a Fly, and it carried 40 lb with no problem. Tubus makes solid aluminum clamps for the fork that will allow you to mount a front lowrider; the Tubus Tara is obvious, but IIRC, these clamps also let you mount the Duo. While Frankensteining things has it's place, I'd suggest a good solid rack front and back is a great way to go. I use Nitto's big back rack and mini front rack and love them. Re: [RBW] Babyshoe Pass EL's Tubeless on Pacenti SL23's
Doug: thanks for posting this; very very useful information. I hope (God willing) to replace the 559X1.35 Kojaks on the '03 Curt-built Rivendell with the (God willing) forthcoming Compass 559 X 32 extralights, and run them tubeless on Sun/Ringle EQ 21 rims using Orange Seal or Stan's and a Stan's rim strip. This gives me further hope. FWIW, I heartily second tubeless + sealant as a very, very effective remedy against goatheads. On my Fargo I use Schwalbe Furious Freds. These must be the very lightest, thinnest, most-supple tires in the world, since a 622X (true) 50 weighs a [true, per Pelouze mail scale] 360 grams. I ride these tubeless with Stan's through goathead patches and live to ride further, the sealant closing the holes after a few meters of riding. It is very fun to hear the spurt-spurt-spurt of brief, temporary air loss and then have it stop as the sealant does its thing. On Sat, Jul 18, 2015 at 11:40 AM, Doug Williams salg...@minbaritm.com wrote: I converted my Babyshoe Pass EL's on Pacenti SL23 rims to tubeless yesterday. So my 58cm 650B Homer is running SMOOTH. Everything is great so far, I'll followup with a long term report after some more miles. Some preliminary observations: From what I had read, I was expecting a battle; but seating the tires was actually quite easy. I didn't want water inside the tires, so I used no soapy water or lubricant of any kind. I had an injector for the Orange Seal sealant, so I added the sealant AFTER the tires were seated. In short, the tires were seated while completely dry. Here is how I did it. First, I seated the tires in the normal manner with an inner tube. Then I broke ONE bead and removed the inner tube. I installed the tubeless tire stem. Then I worked my way around the rim and pulled the loose bead outward on the rim to seat it as best as I could. It wasn't fully seated of course, but somewhat close. Then I just pumped the tire up and seated it, didn't even remove the valve core (as some recommend for faster air flow) because my pump fit the valve stem better with the core in. It was actually quite easy to seat the tire with my floor pump! Full disclosure, I have the high volume Lezyne Dirt Floor Drive Pump, but really I think any floor pump would have worked. My daughter seated one of the tires and I seated the other. Easy both times. I think the key is to have one bead completely on and the second bead pulled in close like I did. So far I'm quite satisfied with tubeless. My goal was to avoid having to use a heavy commuter tire because I really love the ride of the Babyshoe Pass EL's. I see no weight savings with tubeless and I don't care. If there is a difference in performance I can't tell. I was already using Schwalbe SV14 light (130 gram) inner tubes and the ride was sweet (when I didn't flat). I'm interested only in flat protection because with all the goat heads and other thorns around here flats were annoyingly common with tubes. I probably used more Orange Seal than necessary, but we will see. I'll probably carry two inner tubes and a patch kit as emergency backup, so again...no weight savings. But if I don't get flats, it will be worth it. I use my bike to commute to work. It is only 5 miles each direction, but I get up early and extend my morning commute somewhere fun to get a 90 minute or so morning ride. I don't want to be fixing a flat out in the boonies at dawn before work. Been there, done that! So hopefully tubeless will be the answer for me...time will tell. I've only ridden a BF, but I can answer the bus/office question: get the Brompton. Bike Fridays are primarily bicycles which ride nice, and can be folded/broken-down for travel; it's not particularly compact, and you wouldn't want to do it in a hurry as the bus is showing up. Brompton folds fast and compact, and if this is your primary need for a folder, 20-inch-wheel BF's can't touch them. [RBW] Trigger Shifters?
You might want to scour Ebay/Craigslist for a cheap right-or-left trigger first to see how it feels. I've used them to good effect on semi-swept-back bars, but Albas come back at an almost 90-degree angle. The index finger trigger should be fine (Shimano Rapidfire), but the thumb position might be a little awkward to operate. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Babyshoe Pass EL's Tubeless on Pacenti SL23's
I converted my Babyshoe Pass EL's on Pacenti SL23 rims to tubeless yesterday. Sam took a bit of getting used to with ~48 lbs split 60/40 rear/front, so it's worth a test ride or two before heading out on a longer tour. I rode my blue Ram today over a course that included a fair bit of coarse pavement. I put a HOW made wheelset on that uses Velocity Aeroheat rims on Paul hubs. [RBW] 1UpUSA Bike Rack and Rivs
Thanks to everyone who gave me feed back on how various bike racks worked with Rivs, fenders, racks, and wide bars. In the end we bought the 1UpUSA rack and offer this initial review Bottom line - Rack is an A, customer service is gentlemen's C. First the rack. It is as solid and almost as easy to set up as they claim. Once learned it is pretty simple to live with and works well with my large Saluki and Pat's Betty. Pictures here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25287678@N08/sets/72157655639570388 It was easy enough to get the rack onto the car, and adding or removing the second carrier is literally a one minute job. I initially ran into trouble getting it set up to work with fenders on 650B tires and had enough frustration to almost send it back. After some experimenting however I got it rock solid. The rack comes preconfigured to work with 700C tires, without fenders or a rack. I bought a pair of the fender adapters to add to the rear supports but found two problems. The rear carrier pinched, crushed actually, the fender stays before getting tight to the fender and the front attachment didn't quite get to the tire before hitting the fender. I lowered both the front and rear bars so that they would hit the wheels sooner. (you can see in the pictures how the tire stops have been lowered. This worked well in the front but continued to bend the rear fender stays. I went ahead and pushed the rear tight. This held the fender very firmly but allowed the wheel to move across the width of the two vertical wheel holders. When I released the carrier from the wheel I found that the stays immediately bounced back into position. You can see this clearly in one of the photos. I decided to simply add toe straps around the rear wheels, which held them firmly to one side. I took the rig out for a shakedown cruise which included 5 miles of dirt road, 5 miles of bad chip and seal and 5 miles of smooth highway. Pat drove while I sat in the back seat and observed the bikes. Given the amount of weight cantilevered off the back of the car and the roughness of the roads there was plenty of movement of the cars suspension but absolutely none between the bike and carrier nor the carrier and the hitch. The second bike carrier can be removed very easily and the whole rig then folds up out of the way, much better than any Tule, Yakima, or Saris rack that I have seen. So A for easy on and off and A for solidness. A for fitting two complex bikes without any interference. Service. Before ordering I sent two emails to the company seeking clarification of their shipping policy. I never got an answer. As I was working through the fender / rack / 650B set up, I called them. I told the nice lady at the other end of the line that I was having problems with the set up, and before I send this back to you I would like to talk to someone who can speak about these issues. She promised that someone would call me but no one ever has. C for customer service. Michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Trigger Shifters?
Funny you should ask! I just yesterday received a box from Rivendell with a set of Albatross bars, to put on a mountain bike that I haven't been able to make peace with fit-wise, and which happens to have trigger shifters. I just swapped the bars on this afternoon and went for a ride. Some pictures attached. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5vDyx9xry58/Var9cpuWcqI/AIQ/lzv0PP_fHzc/s1600/alb01.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iOQ1M3fr7_E/Var9gHe7jZI/AIY/IONWeZ3ATro/s1600/alb02.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Wg-j6cS3zjw/Var9iqmcGFI/AIg/2uADKxy_bno/s1600/alb03.jpg In general, they seem to work pretty well and, to me, look just fine. They have a comfortable and very natural / ergonomic shifting motion, but I did find that I accidentally bumped the larger, thumb (cable pull) triggers a bit when riding on really rough trails. The smaller, index finger (cable release) triggers are well protected though. These are late 90s xtr with separate shifter and lever clamps. I think the integrated version that David mentioned would actually give you a little more room to slide them forward. As is, this combination leaves just enough room on the straight section for the grips. No room left for a fork lock-out button but hopefully you're not dealing with that nonsense, like I am. As for the bars themselves in this type of application. jury's out. I couldn't climb at all on steep singletrack, because my front wheel kept lifting up. Actually, I think I kept bumping the shifter precisely because I was intuitively trying to shift my weight forward by moving my grip. Also to agree with David said: If you have the option and aren't considering trigger shifters just because you already have them, get thumb shifters by all means! On Friday, July 17, 2015 at 9:00:23 PM UTC-6, Steve Cole wrote: I know Riv doesn't generally condone/approve of the use of trigger shifters -- they don't sell them. [RBW] Re: Rambouillet Touring Upgrades
Hi John, I have a Redwood (less fancy Ram) - it fit 700x35c Paselas (36mm actual if I recall correctly). I think you might be able to squeeze in the SPEED Ride tire, though making no promises. The CROSS ride would definitely not fit as the knobs would make the tire taller than a road tread. I'd measure the tires you have on there, actual width, then measure how much distance you have to the top of the brakes. Width itself shouldn't be a concern, just height. In my case I wanted at least 38mm tires AND fenders. Recently converted it to 650b and now fit 48mm tires with room for fenders. Just a consideration.
