2015-07-24 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I had a too long Technomic (10cm) with Mark's bar on my Roadeo. I switched to
an 8 cm DD but I had it bottomed out and tHe bars were just a tad high, so I
got a 6 cm Tallux and it is perfect. I thought it looked kind of funny too. But
I'm planning on using it on my Hunqapillar with some version of Albas.

You could also make a straight panel from the sheet material, the diamond

[RBW] ...whereby a stone became caught up in his wheel

2015-07-24 Thread Esteban
I was in the UK when TdF began, so I became accustomed to watching it live
in the afternoon. When we returned nearly 2 weeks ago, I bought the NBC app
and have been enjoying the Tour. I'm not a big racing fan, but I like
Froome and especially Nario Quintana and am rooting for a Latin American
champion. Quintana certainly looks more like a healthy human being than the
other riders.

Anyway, for those watching today (no spoiler on the outcome here), you may
have seen Froome stop and get off the bike for a mechanical problem at a
critical point. Here's the report from today's Telegraph: ...launched his
attack after Froome suffered from a mechanical problem, whereby a stone
became caught up in his wheel.

Heh, the proverbial pebble caught in tight clearances!? Here's to plenty of
clearances and Grant's wisdom :)

[RBW] Re: Something's not right here...

2015-07-24 Thread Ron Mc
two things to look at on optimizing chain length. On biggest ring and
biggest cog, your RD should be forward no more than 45 degrees, if it's
less, the chain's too short. On your smallest and smallest, the length of
chain running between the two jockey wheels should be pointing no higher
than horizontal, if it is, the chain is too long. There should be enough
chain wrap on most long cage derailleurs to make this do-able.
Something else, you're stretching the RD cage return spring farther than it
was designed to go, and it may take a set. .

So after lurking on the site for almost 18 months I finally pulled the
trigger and bought a Rivendell of my own. I was on the hairy edge of
simply purchasing a Sam new, especially when I saw the black and cream
ones, when a 60cm Yves Gomez frame came up for sale in this group. First
off...thank you David Karmishlian for being so easy to work with and for
delivering the frame expertly boxed and padded. The transaction couldn't
have been any easier.

Two weeks after receiving the frame it's now a complete work. Well, there
are racks, baskets, and bags to consider but it's RIDEABLE. And what a
ride it is. I'd been a long-time recumbent cyclist and my first foray back
to uprights had been a Long Haul Trucker. It's amazing how supple and
responsive this Yves Gomez is -- even for a 225lb Clyde like myself.

[RBW] Re: ...whereby a stone became caught up in his wheel

2015-07-24 Thread franklyn
Yeah, and people are criticizing Nibali's choice for attaching the group at
that time. I have never raced anything in my life, but am fond of the idea
of the technical trial described by Jan Heine in the past. I feel like the
pro-bicycle race should have a much stronger element of technical
trial--kind of like formula one racing, where bicycle design and setup
should be a big component of the competition. A mechanical or crash is a
testament of a rider or a team's choice--most of the time at least, and
that should be part of the whole package. I was disappointed that none of
the other big favorites went with Nibali when Froome had the slight
mechanical. If they had gone with him, it would have been much harder for
Froome to latch back on since he only had one teammate left, and the rest
of them can collaborate for the rest of the way to eek out a big advantage,
perhaps even unseating froome. That would have been so much more exciting!

Anyway, for those watching today (no spoiler on the outcome here), you may

Unfortunately (or fortunately from Froome's perspective), not very much.
That's why I was disappointed that other riders didn't make this a bigger

Re: [RBW] Something's not right here...

2015-07-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Whoops!

Long ago, when I bothered with such things as derailleurs*, I used to
indulge the conceit of running triples with short cage road derailleurs.**
One example was a 26/36/48 triple with a 14-32 7 speed shifted in the rear
with an 8-speed Ultegra. I was always careful to install just enough links
to accommodate the big/big; this left the chain in the small/small and
small/penultimate and small/ante-peunultimate cogs dangling loose, a la
Velocio's dangling chain system, but then I never used those gear anyway --
except to test them, and they worked fine in smooth conditions, the bottom
chain run swaying gently as you pedaled along.

* Another conceit; I have one derailleur bike that gets at least 1/3 of my
miles -- the pavement/dirt fat tire'd all rounder Fargo.

** I intend to use Dura Ace 7410 f and r derailleurs on a forthcoming
replacement for the pavement/dirt Fargo, God willing. Just because they're
so pretty.

I don't mind the upward curve of the levers at all. Kn fact, for me they
feel nicer than when my LHT had a mustache bar with straight levers.

Lookin good. Another great example of how nice black can be. howd you do

really weird right side up...though the cable routing is less than ideal
 now.

[RBW] Re: May I introduce Yves...

2015-07-24 Thread Larry Charlton
The front derailleur looks great and performs very well. Although, not
much is being asked of it since the chainrings are only 40-26. If, perhaps
a standard touring triple were in play... Note that the SUN XCD front is
a braze-on so a clamp will be needed, too.

 Congrats on the new bike!!

Congrats also on the SUNXCD derailers.
I have the rear one on my 8-speed Bleriot.
How do you like the SUN FD? Does it work well with your 9-speed(8?)
 cassette setup?
I might get a SUN FD for both my bikes next time I need to change.

[RBW] Re: Question re Decal Removal

2015-07-24 Thread islaysteve
At the risk of incurring the disapproval of Louis fans, I will share a method
that might help alleviate the problem. The decal in the photo below consists
of a diamond shape cut from a sheet of decal vinyl, and another sticker which
you will no doubt recognize. I did this as I prefer it to Louis' face on my
seat tube. The beauty is that it is completely removable. I ordered the sheet
vinyl online, could probably come up with the site with some research. You
could also make a straight panel from the sheet material, the diamond shape was
surprisingly difficult to get right. Of course if your peeling decal is rough,
it may show through the vinyl, so you may or may not want to take steps to
smooth the surface.
