Re: [RBW] black cork grips - to shellack or not

2015-08-27 Thread Aaron Young
I've shellacked foam before. It was fine. It will change the finish and
feel of course, but it will also increase longevity of the bar tape.

Do you have a scrap you could test the shellac on? Or perhaps try an
inconspicuous place like where the hoods cover the bar tape a bit?

Re: [RBW] Re: Aeropress Inventor

2015-08-27 Thread Peter Adler
Indeed they do, and they'll fit in a typical handlebar bracket. I like the
double-wall insulated SS version particularly.

The downside of the Bodum French-press mugs is that the plunger shaft isn't
really long enough. This means that there's a sweet spot for grind
size/dosing; if you don't get enough grounds in for the filter to pack the
wetted grounds down, you don't get a full extraction, and there's a lot of
liquid coffee sludge left in the mug. That takes a *lot* of grounds, which
may not make for the most appealing coffee.

My suspicion is that the shaft is shortened so that coffee drinkers don't
poke their eyes out. I've considered taking the shaft to a machine shop to
get a matching shaft made maybe 20mm longer. And drink from the side of my
mouth.

Re: [RBW] Re: Aeropress Inventor

2015-08-27 Thread Peter Adler
The mug holds 18 oz total - figure 12-14 oz of actual coffee, about like
any other travel mug. I fill the thing up, put the mug in my handlebar
bracket while steeping, and off I go. The coffee's usually gone within 30
minutes. Maybe I'm less fussy than other cutting-edge coffee consumers. My
regular French press makes 1.5 large cups, and I don't pour the second cup
off into a separate container while I'm drinking the first.

Anyway: Two coffee vessels = less-than-elegant travel accessory management.
The whole point of having a brewing mechanism *that's also a drinking
vessel!* is to eliminate another object to tote around.

Personally, I am going to live with this bike, and ride it a good while
before contemplating any upgrades. By that, I mean replacing replacing any
of the original components with different items. Because I do plan to
accessorize right away with a Pletscher rear rack, fenders, water bottle
cage, and a bell. But as for replacing things existing on the bike, I'm
gonna hold off on that until I get a good feel for what is already there.
For me, a lot of the decision a matter of expense. Buying this bike did
rather stretch the budget. Also, I want to see how good a job the Riv
folks did at spec'ing the bike out. I'll bet it works out very well.
Though, having said that, I do have a lonely Brooks saddle kicking around
that place that will be installed post haste. :)

natural, though, not black). It'll darken them up a bit help them to
become more water resistant.

[RBW] Waterproof iphone6 bike mount recs?

Iphone 6 on its way.
Currently I use an Iphone 4 in a Lifeproof case mounted on bike with Lifeproof

liked the phone mounted where I could easily access map app.
Anyone have cases and waterproof mounting hardware they recommend? My bikes
have fenders and I ride in the rain.
This would be for mounting on a Riv of course!
