[RBW] Re: Lowrider max weight on Rivendell road bikes?

2015-09-22 Thread Peter Adler
I don't know how relevant to your question this info will be, but just as a
datapoint:

The one bike where I do any noticeable front loading is my 1971 Raleigh
International, which I would call an Ur-Rivendell (the International was
the bike that the Japanese manufacturers of the late 70s-early 80s cloned,
which led to Bridgestone and Rivendell). Using Bruce Gordon racks (front
lowriders) and Ortlieb Back Rollers front and rear, I have carried two full
cases of wine on MUPs. That's six full glass bottles per bag, for distances
of up to fifteen miles.

The bike gets squirrely with only a front load, but it smooths out a lot
once you balance it out in back. I rode out six miles along the SF
waterfront to the Rivendell picnic on Sunday with an Ortlieb handlebar bag
plus the two rear Back Rollers that never come off. I had gone pannierless
the day before, and the bike felt skittish with six pounds in the bar bag.
On Sunday, I moved the front load into the panniers (a Kryptonite New York,
mostly), and put about four pounds (snacks, tools, a couple cans of ginger
ale, sunscreen, a hardcover book to read on BART while I crossed under the
Bay) into the handlebar bag; the ride was far smoother.

2015-09-22 Thread David Banzer
That's good to know. I think the wider measurements were coming from wider
rims.
Are you using the regular or extralight version?
I have clearance (minimal, less than ideal) for Vee Rubber Speedsters on my
Redwood, which measure 47mm for me. I might need to wear them out first
(which should take a while as the tread is fairly thick) before I try out a
pair of Switchbacks.
Even better, though unlikely - any listers in Chicago have these and would
let me mount one up on my rear wheel to see if they'll fit?

Running out of options here! Any suggestion? If not, is this possibly a

[RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-22 Thread Kieran J
My Mon-Fri commute is about 8km each way from the west side of downtown
into the city core. It gets progressively more and more dense and crowded
as I go - tolerable on good days, hellish on bad ones. It is 100% on city
streets that include unseparated bike lanes, sharrows and nothing at all.

If I want to, I can go the long way: a large U-shape route south, then
east, then north, following a separated MUP trail along the lake front and
up into the downtown area along city streets. This almost doubles the
transit time, and I'm usually too impatient to do that.

Most of the errands I need to run - groceries, beer, coffee, etc. are
directly between work and home, so the route doesn't change much.

My partner and I have a car, which we mainly use to get out of the city.
Trying to drive in-town is an exercise in blowing your stack in
frustration. Maybe once a month, I put the bike on the car and drive 1-2
hours into the country if I am particularly jones-ing for some peaceful
riding time and I have the time. Those rides are usually 50-75km in length
- pretty much my limit.

[RBW] Re: Lowrider max weight on Rivendell road bikes?

2015-09-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Doug, Peter, and (..?..). I too think about 10 per side is top, and
that this after I have some rear weight.

After selling my Motobecane and the Ram, I now have only this '03 for
grocery loading (well, I'll God willing have a new Chauncey off road bike
in a couple of months, too) and the '03 doesn't do rear loads as well as
these 2 -- the Motobecane, as I've said before, was the best; the Ram was
quite good. The front racks are meant to take over once I hit about 30 in
the rear, and for that purpose I think they will do well.

[RBW] Re: C in October

2015-09-22 Thread Pondero
Okay locals, I've coordinated with my family, factored in our constraints,
and even exchanged a couple of emails with Tony DeFilippo to get some tips.
Here is our plan for the C tour "rolling start" for any who wish to
simply say "hi", ride with us a while, our ride with us all the way to
Cumberland.

Our start date is Tuesday, October 6.

Our train that includes friend (Steve Butcher), son-in-law (Carey Jones),
and me will depart out of Silver Spring, MD. We'll make two stops to meet
up with folks. The first stop will be in Bethesda. We will meet up at
0830 at Bethesda Bagels (http://www.bethesdabagels.com/) and plan to roll
out by 0915. That allows us to reach our next stop at Fletchers Boathouse
(C rendezvous) by 0945ish. From there we'll head north on the C for a
few days. For any who might be joining us for part of the way, we plan to
lunch in Leesburg that Tuesday, and camp the first night at the Indian
Flats hiker/biker site at approx. mile 42.

I believe Tony is planning to join us for the first day and overnight. I
recall that Rusty, Erl, Jeff, Kellie, and Minh have all expressed interest
in some level of participation. I hope to meet several of you on this
trip...and thanks again to everyone who offered planning help!

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-22 Thread Peter Adler
Same here. My LBS used to stock Continentals, which worked great; I
typically ran them for 3K-5K miles. Ever since they dropped the Contis and
replaced them with Kenda/Q-Tubes, the stupid things blow all the time. I've
been going out to RBWHQ for Contis for the last year, but I just noticed
that the Rubenas are back in stock and so the Contis are gone. I haven't
quite mustered the consumer will to spring for Schwalbes, but that's the
logical next step. I'd been thinking of getting a pair or two of Challenge
Strada Biancas from Wiggle, so that's a good opportunity to load up on Euro
tubes for cheap.

I'm not sure who the OEM is for Bontrager or Novara (REI house label)
tubes, but I assume they're also Kendas. Eccch.

Sorry I'm late jumping in on this conversation (and I may have missed this
being addressed), but, a point of clarification

The above sentence, to me, reads that plantar fasciitis is caused by a
virus, which, is not the case plantar fasciitis being a condition
where there's inflammation of the plantar fascia, through overuse, being
overweight, improper footwear, etc...

Zack , if you like I can measure my fork and stay widths on my 52 hill borne if

42mm 650b tires on my hill borne with fenders pushes the envelope on fender

brake arms limit fender height. Tired get very close to fenders.

Is it a true 28.6mm clamp or is it 31.8 with a shim ?

I'm assuming 31.8 w/shim as this is what the docs spec.

These appear still available new , is it that your seeking a used one or

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Fun is by definition subjective!

For me, a Roadeo with 30 mm tires would be ideal -- I would have no use at
all for anything wider, or even for fenders, on this sort of bike, which in
my stable would fill the "gofast derailleur" niche.

Past racing bikes: At least some models from the early 70s can be quite Riv
like. My 1977 Motobecane Grand Record had 45 cm stays and took 29s with
fenders. It also carried 40 lb on a Fly better than any bike I can remember.

I take it that I am right in thinking that the Roadeo handles a wee bit
quicker than the Rambouillet? The Ram was a very nice bike, but handled wee
bit sedately, for my taste, for a "fun" road bike. It would have made a
wonderful touring bike, I guess. And it was beefier than it needed to be;
compared to the very light Motobecane, say.

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-22 Thread RJM
The Roadeo won't take 38's, certainly not with fenders. I think 35s are the
tops. I was riding 32s for a while but now am running 25s, but I'm
switching back to 32s and fenders for the winter. The bike rides great with
those tire widths on 22 wide aluminium rims (I have been using Rolf Vigor
RS wheelsI know, I know, totally not Riv approved, but they have been
awesome wheels for the riding I'm doing.) I feel a little bit more
responsive with the 25s in pacelines, when I get into them.

something which I actually brought up with the organizer. One downhill was
 just destroyed and had that gravelly (sp?) loose chip stuff all over it;
apparently this was a failed attempt to fix the various potholes and
irregularities. I was glad I had the Roadeo on that one and other riders
were complaining up a storm afterwards because of the condition and how
they had to slow way down. I didn't slow down because the bike can handle

Agreed. I do wonder if my Ram has a future as a touring bike. The fork
would need more attachment points - or maybe a different fork.

It's quite overbuilt in its present config as a stripped-down, go-fast type
machine - especially for a lanky dude like me. I wouldn't mind replacing it
with a XXL Boulder Road Sport or something similar. Something lighter,
faster and more spring-y. I'll add it to the list!

[RBW] Lowrider max weight on Rivendell road bikes?

2015-09-22 Thread Patrick Moore
... with stock forks, that is. What do y'all consider too much in lowrider
panniers?

I'm still experiementing, and yes, rear weight is better (for me), but
t'other day I rode home with almost 20 lb in the front Sports Packers --
20+ lb in one, 18+ lb in the other.

Handling was certainly different -- the bike didn't want to turn, but once
I got used to leaning more and "turning" less, it felt OK.

I daresay 10 lb/side is the max, and I daresay too that the bike would feel
better with another 20+ lb in the rear at the same time, but for now that
is my theoretical maximum.

I recall perversely putting 2 gallons of water *per side* in lowriders on
the Sam Hill. Now that was a straight ahead only feeling!

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-22 Thread Tim Gavin
I have a Riv Road Standard, kind of a pre-Ram, pre-Roadeo, and I've
modified it more towards touring than fast road riding.

Mine cleared a 700 x 28 with no fenders, which I found limiting. I prefer
riding with fenders and wider tires for varied surfaces (I even put fenders
on my new carbon cross bike -- it has fender bosses).

So, I:
converted the Riv Road to 650b x 38 with long reach brakes
added full fenders
added a rear rack (Nitto R20 Mt Campee)
added a front rack (Nitto F20 Mt Campee or Nitto M1, with Tubus clamps and
fork adapters to fit)
mounted a Brooks Flyer Special
built up a dynamo wheelset (for the Luxos U headlight and Topline brake
light)
and added all kinds of accessories (frame pump, wired computer, headset
spacer bell, phone mount, etc).

Rivs can be quite versatile, if you are.

I already have an excellent steel go-fast bike, so the Riv fits better in
my stable as a light tourer.

I put tons of miles in on the Riv for commuting, social rides, tours, etc.

In comparison, I almost never ride my skinny-tired gofast bike, and it's
for sale.

[RBW] Re: Bizarrely on topic: AL absorption through skin

2015-09-22 Thread Anton Tutter
Looks like aluminum to me, but the amount is probably so little, and
absorption rates through skin so small, compared to other sources that you
are probably ingesting or absorbing into your bloodstream via other routes
(e.g., smoking), that it's probably of no consequence.

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-22 Thread Will
Of course my impression is subjective. Completely so.

I was thinking about purchasing a Serotta a few years back. Even went and
had a bike fitting. The Serotta frames were beautiful. I loved them.

When I asked if I could have one built to take fenders, the shop guy looked
like he had pooh on his shoes. Why would you want fenders?

So objective/subjective is tricky business. The idea of fenders, and tires
that aren't anorexic, seems rather normal and practical to me, but was
completely foreign to the shop guy (who was a seriously strong rider).

In the end it all worked out. An Atlantis found me.

I do wish the Roadeo took 38s. My son has a mid-80s 56 cm. Trek 613 that
runs 700x36s. It's tight, but I really like his bike. I put an Ultegra
level group on the frame. There's something about larger wheels that works.
When they spin up you have momentum. Do I need cush... not so much, I'm 155
pounds, so everything tire-wise over 32 works fine. Mostly, I like wider
tires because they handle crappy roads better,

[RBW] Lowrider max weight on Rivendell road bikes?

2015-09-22 Thread dougP
My Atlantis with the stock fork handled 10-12 lbs per side. Typically this was
part of a 4 bag load, with similar weight on the rear. Right now we are cc
touring, and I have 2 bags on front w/less than 10 lbs per bag + Acorn @ 5-6
lbs. No rear load. OTH, her Atlantis has heavier bags on rear rack, no front
load, and she says it handles fine. Mine has 700 x 40 tires, and hers 26 x 1.5.

[RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-22 Thread JohnS
I live car-lite in an inner ring suburb, so I have convenient access to
shopping centers (super market, Target) and a down town. Many of my
destinations are within two or three miles, so the miles don't really add
up, it's more the number of trips that I can take by bike. On a typical day
I'll make at least two bike trips if not three or four. Automobiles are
less efficient and pollute more when the engine is cold, so there's more to
gain by reducing the number of short trips. I still drive, but I try to
limit my driving to longer trips or to destinations which are not bike
friendly.
