Re: [RBW] My new Roadeo

I love reading reports like this.

And regarding clearance, Riv used to show a Roadeo set up nicely with Jack
Browns and fenders. It might even be on their Roadeo page.

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-04 Thread Dennis Hogan
I followed a similar path and got a pair of "army" (not sure which army)
wool pants at good 'ol Andy & Bax in Portland. Heavy duty wool and buttons
- took them to a local seamstress and had them converted to knickers - all
in they were about $55 - they are very good for the winter but a bit of
overkill for the rest of the seasons.

[RBW] Re: San Francisco to Monterey, via way of Rivendell picnic

2015-10-04 Thread dougP
David:

We had fun meeting you guys & hanging out at the picnic. My wife is still
in awe of her Atlantis, and how laid back Rivendell people are.

San Francisco to San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara is a fantastic ride. SLO
& SB are luggage stops for Amtrak, so you can box your bike and get back to
the Bay Area on the Coast Starlight. It's a lot easier process than what
the airlines put you thru. Some friends are currently in central Oregon,
after taking the Starlight from LA to Seattle, and report the service went
well.

Ultra-long distance cyclists are on another planet. They are fascinating
to talk to, as they have worked out the details of "living on a bike". I'm
sure they get the same questions over'n'over, and simply load the track
"standard answers" when approached. For me, I love riding my bike, but I'm
over the "if a little is good, more must be better" syndrome. I enjoy
accounts of ultra rides, but mostly for the unexpected events and not the
biking itself. My guess is that's what propels these people who can spend
months or years traveling.

[RBW] My new Roadeo

2015-10-04 Thread Don Compton
I know that I am preaching to the Choir. I picked up my new Riv Roadeo
frame set the end of August. I installed the Shimano 6800 11sp group set
along with a set of Shimano "medium reach" brake set. After over 1600
miles, the equipment and the frame set have been flawless. For a club rider
( never race), the Roadeo is perfect. I run 700x28 Grand Bois tires pumped
to 60fr and 70r.
I know this is sort of a repeat, but I just need to sen an update.
I was having a problem with setback ( short femors) and I just raised the
bars ( highway one's about 1cm below the saddle).
As many of you experience, there's a lot of dis- information on the
internet. One of the statements that I have seen is maximum tire width on a
Roadeo. It's at least 32 width with fenders. And much bigger without.
Anyway, enjoy your Rivs.

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-04 Thread Garth

These look fantastic ! Don't know about the "slim" fit though . I
prefer pants loose in the trunk area , no restrictions ! So I doubt these
would fit the bill.

For those , if any , that know of the now discontinued Ex Officio Amphi
pants and shorts , the fit of these is sublime. They are the roomiest of
all, yet are not baggy at all , the key is the front pleats , which almost
no one makes anymore except in dress pants. I wear the pants as knee-kers
all the time , as they have a adjustable hem and just pull 'em up to the
knees and they stay there. The "new" Ex Officio Amphi pants and short bear
no relation to the former ones , the "new" ones are just cookie cutter
style like most pants.

Preston,
Welcome !!
There aren't many Riv riders in the Denver area that visit this site.
I live about 30 minutes south of Denver and most of my rides start around
the Littleton area . The Carson Nature Center has many options from this
starting point. What part of Denver do you live?
I ride a Sam that I purchased about a year ago and just started doing
coffee out and enjoy it very much..
I plan on riding the C-470 /Highline Canal trail this week.. Maybe
Tuesday.Let me know if you'd like to join me... It's a beautiful dirt/some
paved trail that snakes from C-470 area up to Hampton Greenwood Villiage.
There are many options from this starting point .
I was thinking Tuesday.
Maybe Brad ( Caffeinated Wheelman) will chime in here also.

Thanks Dave! I was planning on the EL Switchbacks since I am loving the
Babyshoe Pass EL's. I guess 49+mm would be really pushing my clearance. I
might get away with it without my fenders, but then I think I'll wait until
the rainy season passes before I try that. I wish that Compass would put
the tubeless ready bead on the Babyshoe Pass. I suppose that isn't likely
since they would have to make a new mold.

[RBW] Kojaks, tubeless

2015-10-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I've just ordered some tubeless 559X34 mm Kojaks from Wiggle (<$32/each
folding, so they claim) and mean to have Fat Tire set these up tubeless on
my new Sun Ringle EQL21 rims. The resident expert predicts success with the
folding model, but declined to attempt with the wire model.

My main reason is to approach the feel and ride of the new, but be-tubed,
Elk Passes, with tires of wider footprint, greater tread life, and of
course much lower cost.

The claimed 300 gram weight of the folding Kojaks, plus 2 oz of sealant,
minus the weight of a 26" X 1" tube at 70 grams or so, should put the new
tires within 50-60 grams of the Elk Pass setup.

Does anyone have comments, experience, advice, or catcalls about my plan?

One other reason for this trial: to spread my tire risk over at least 2
manufacturers.

And also: I have my used but still VG wire bead Kojaks for sale, $35
SHIPPED for the PAIR, CONUS. Tread guaranteed for at least another 2K miles
in the rear, normal wear only, for riders no more than 200 lb, on pavement
and firm dirt -- ie, where I ride them.

I like roominess and sizing up, too.

Couldn't one buy some wool suit pants at Goodwill, cut them short and sew

Get whatever size you need for roominess.

[RBW] Re: Luxos U or Edelux?

2015-10-04 Thread Zach Duval
I think that the issue of reliability is my biggest fear in choosing the
Luxos U, which would otherwise be preferable for the built-in USB output.
However, the suggestion of increased drag over other USB output options as
well as the fact that B seems to be doing away with an option for USB
entirely with their newest light is probably going to steer me toward the
Edelux II, which is also just a much prettier light.

Now to figure out the best mounting option...

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I've done almost that with Goodwill woolen dress pants, except that I had a
pro sew them up for me. Cut some 8" below knee (I like plenty of space when
I cinch them just under the knee; don't like them hanging loose); hem;
attach velcro straps; and use excess to line front for additional wind
protection. Velcro is very easy and secure and adjustable, and holds your
socks up better.

They are quite elegant, though since I've lost weight they are a wee bit
loose in the waist. But one advantage of hi rize pants is that you can
cinch them tight (sometimes a wide web belt with cam buckle works better
than narrower and standard buckle) without great discomfort.

For even greater elegance you can taper the bottom, or put in a gusset that
folds inward nicely, a la the Bicycle Fixation knickers. But mine work just
fine.

I have to restrain myself from wearing argyle golf socks and a yellow
sweater vest, but that would be simply too twee.

[RBW] Re: San Francisco to Monterey, via way of Rivendell picnic

Great to meet you for the brief ride over the bridge and again at the
picnic! Looks like an fun adventure all said and done. I've always wanted
to ride the coast down to Big Sur and hope to one day.

Those riders from Alaska to South America are nuts, and inspiring at the
same time. I remember a blog a while back about a couple with 2 kids who
did that with trailers on their bikes for the kids, just quit their jobs
and went. My wife 1000% declined that idea.
