[RBW] Re: Tires for my Hunq

2015-10-08 Thread Takashi
I recently bought Continental Race King (Race Sport) 29x2.0.
I will write about them on another thread (tire test and impression thread)
sometime, but I don't have time now.

To be brief, their tread pattern is more off-road-oriented than Thunder
Burt, thus less smooth (but acceptable) on pavement.
They seem to roll well both on- and off-pavement.

Some on-line reviews say that they are vulnerable, some say durable.
I have yet to judge their durability.

Re: [RBW] touring hub and brake lever recommendation

2015-10-08 Thread Tim Gavin
*Hub:*
If you're looking to buy new from your LBS, you'll be pretty limited by
what they stock. Non-disc, 135 mm hubs are becoming more rare, especially
in silver. They can probably order Velo Orange and anything else carried
in the QBP catalog.

I recently built up a rear wheel for my Riv using the Velo Orange Grand Cru
touring hub
,
but it was on sale for $110 (which made it very tempting). It's a good hub
and very easy to dis-assemble without any tools. It freewheels pretty
quietly--after I put a little grease on the pawls. It's pretty, and
available in 130 mm OLD (which my Riv Road has. 128 mm, actually).

I haven't tried them, but the Rivendell Silver
rear hub is very attractive and
$110. Not bad, but also not available through your LBS.

MUSA would be nice. So, I looked at the "boutique" hubs like White
Industries and Chris King, But, they were all reviewed as having very loud
freewheel action, which I hate.

*Brake Levers:*
I used the the RRL brake levers on Moustache bars. They work well, and are
definitely attractive.

But, the RRL levers are fantastic on drop bars (best ergonomics I've used),
while the ergonomics of the brake levers seems less important on moustache
bars (because you mount the levers 90 degrees off).

I ended up taking the RRLs off my moustache bars and using non-aero Dia
Compe 204

levers. The non-aero cable routing is much less convoluted on moustache
bars.

I've since changed the bike back to drops (Nitto B135) and the RRL levers,
because I prefer the positions available compared to moustaches.

I have an Atlantis, and like Hugh, I love it. It does everything well.
Either bike gets it done, of course, but Atlantis is well... Atlantis. An
icon.

One piece of advice... if you're going camping, go with Tubus racks and
Ortlieb bags. Yeah, I know Riv promotes Nitto, and I have no beef with
Nitto, but Tubus/Ortlieb is the best touring/hauling setup around.

I love White Industries hubs. You get used to the sound, it also holds you back
from coasting all the time which can be a good thing. As for break levers I
would stick with the traditional shimano road brake levers that RIv stocks.
Absolutely nothing wrong with them and they work great on mustache bars.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread shawn m.
I have an 84cm PBH and ride a 54cm Hunq and a 56cm Atlantis. They both fit
me perfectly, and I suspect the 58cm Atlantis would feel too big, more for
TT length than standover. But, hey, a dirt drop or other short stem and
maybe you're in business. I tour on the Hunq. It's all Nitto. I've used
Tubus racks in the past and they work fine, too, but they just don't look
right on a Rivendell to me. Many tours, many miles on the Nitto racks and
no regrets.

Something to consider: How long is the wait for an Atlantis vs. a
Hunqapillar? That can often be a factor!

Hard to go wrong either way, IMHO. Good luck.

2015-10-08 Thread 'Jack' via RBW Owners Bunch
It's a tough call, but either bike would work well for what you have
planned. I have a Hunqapillar and an Atlantis but would give a slight nod
to the Hunq for dirt roads.

Are you sure a 58cm Atlantis will fit you? My PBH is 84.5cm and my Atlantis
is 56cm. An old Atlantis brochure recommends a 56cm for PBH between 83 and
85 and a 58cm for PBH 84.5 to 87.

It seems like with the limited frame sizes the handlebar rise has to be out
of proportion to fit a rider that might normally need a larger frame. If
you usually ride a 56 you'd have to make the 52 work.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires for my Hunq

2015-10-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Super Motos are great tires. They are very fast on the road and float well
in the dirt.

However, based on your dirt-biased riding, I'd recommend the Thunder Burt.
Its knobs (especially on the edges) will help you climb out of ruts that
the Super Moto may slide down into.

The Thunder Burt

is
lighter than the Super Moto

as well.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread iamkeith
I was going to say what Eric just said. FYI, this is a new model that
they've been playing with for a while, but we just recently learned is
conceived as a mid-point between the Hunq and Atlantis. The other way its
been described is as an updated Hillbourne, with longer stays, with room
for MUCH bigger tires, and (presumably) the bottom bracket height adjusted
accordingly.

The main thing I'd say though, is "Get whichever fits you best." These
are the two models I've always wanted, but I fall squarely between sizes in
both cases. You're lucky in that the 54 Hunq is probably a really good
fit. As Jack says, the 56 Atlantis is probably right too, but I'd
understand if you didn't want the 26" tires for primarily off-road duties.
(Though I think they're a huge PLUS if you were going to use it mostly ON
the road.)

Re: [RBW] touring hub and brake lever recommendation

2015-10-08 Thread Jim Bronson
Older Deore XT with cro-mo axles is a solid choice. Reliable, polished
silver, easy to service.

The M780 Deore XT hub that I have has an aluminum axle, I would prefer the
cro-mo. But on the other hand it cost $53 shipped and it's been a rock
solid reliable hub for me. Besides the aluminum axle issue it's also matte
silver which is not so pretty. Sometimes function wins over form though ;)

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Tubus racks are great, no argument there.
And Ortlieb panniers are definitely top-notch; they have THE BEST
attachment systems and come with various sizes of hook inserts to match the
rack tubing.

But Ortlieb bags work great with Nitto racks, too, in case you're
wondering.
I've used the following combiniations:
Nitto R20 Mt Campee rack (like Riv's Big Rear Nitto rack 32R, but simpler
and cheaper) with Sport Packers and Back Rollers
Nitto F20 Mt Campee rack (front, with detachable lowrider frames) with
Sport Packers
Nitto 34F Big Front rack with Sport Packers and Back Rollers.

Cheers,

2015-10-08 Thread Jim D Massachusetts
I have an 84 pbh and have a 54 Hunq. The fit is good except for a slightly
long top tube with a dirt drop stem and noodles. Albatros bars would solve
this I think. The ride is great. Long time ago I test rode an Atlantis.
That was a 56 and the fit seemed good. I suspect that a 58 would have been
too big for me. I think I saw that Grant has an 84+ pbh and I think he has
a 56 Atlantis. Fit issues can vary with the individual. This is just a
couple of more data points.

terrible with a soldering iron. Detaching the connector remnants from the
circuit board was the only difficult part of the process.

2015-10-08 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Without ever having ridden either, my dream bike is an older 56cm Atlantis
with the 44cm chainstays. My understanding is that they are longer now and
I prefer a shorter wheelbase, just for the type of riding I do. I know
from experience, that a 57cm top-tube, which I believe the 56 Atlantis has,
works very well for me. I'm afraid the new Appaloosa will be designed
with a really long toptube for pullback handlebars. I can handle up to
about 60cm but much more than that and I would be too stretched out.

Hunqapillar.
I've had my Hunq for about six months now, and it's hands down my favorite
bike. With plenty of room for big tires (I run Schwalbe 55 mm), it's silky
smooth on either pavement or dirt road, is built like a tank, but rides
like an Atlantis. Plus, you get the coolest headbadge going.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe big apples 29x2.35 on 58cm Atlantis? And other fatties

2015-10-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
According to Peter White, "... if you have a bike like the Rivendell
Atlantis and you won't be using fenders, you can just fit the 60mm Big
Apples (with maybe 3mm clearance) and have the most comfortable ride
possible."

Once upon a time I rode 700c x 60mm on my Bombadil... I'm a fat-tire lover,
and typically go for the fattest tires I can fit. But even I thought the
60s began to feel a bit ponderous on longer road rides. For shorter
distance, especially on mixed terrain and local knocking around these were
the absolute BOMB!!. I eventually settled in on 50mm BAs and felt this was
the better all-round choice... but admittedly I did miss the mega-cush and
comfort of the Big-Daddy Big Apples...

I'm considering a pair of "Big-Mama" BAs for my Clementine 59cm... I don't
care about weight... Clementine will clearly make her presence known along
the Delaware River Trail from Frenchtown to Washington Crossing (and
beyond).

I say go BIG!!

IF you can fit 2.35" Big Apples, you can fit the Super Moto
.
It's the same tread but on a much lighter, more supple casing.

The best way to check clearance is with a caliper. I use the <$5 plastic
ones from Harbor Freight.

[RBW] Tire Review: WTB Nano 40

2015-10-08 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I've had these on my Salsa for most of the summer up to now, and they have
been riding great. They're a touch slower on the road than my favorite
all-rounder tire, the Clement X'Plor MSO . But a lot more grab in the dirt,
including singletrack. What really impressed me yesterday and inspired this
posting was riding through a lot of goathead thorns. Almost all of the
thorns were embedded in the raised tread portions and didn't puncture the
tube. I was able to pull them all out. The few that were in the regular
surface I was able to break off without releasing the pressure. Rode home
without catastrophe!!! Still have to face the consequences this afternoon,
but not having to change a tube mid-ride makes all the difference!

Re: [RBW] Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread Aaron Young
Based on your intended use (lots of dirt) I'd say Hunqa over Atlantis
because of more SO clearance. Also, I agree the Hunqa's head badge is
probably the best ever in the history of the universe. :)

This might muddy the waters and maybe you've already considered and
rejected this idea, but the 56 Atlantis would probably work for you as
well. Biggest difference is 26" wheels. I coulda chosen a 56 or 58
Atlantis. I rode both. Went with 56 because I planned to be on rough stuff
a lot and wanted slightly more SO clearance.

In the end both Hunqa or Atlantis will be fine. They are very similar so my
advice is to just follow your heart and choose the one that you will love
the most.

One thing I've learned is I much prefer soft, supple tires to stiff, flat
protection tires. And I haven't had more flats (your milage will obviously
vary). The ride is soo smoth. Plush. Delicious. Thunder Burts
are up there on supple scale and give an amazing ride.

2015-10-08 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've recently become interested in the Thunder Burts. How do they do on
the pavement, compared to other tires you ridden? I've got a Surly Karate
Monkey so now I can go as fat as I care to! I'm running 40mm Duremes right
now but want to jump to 50-60mm tires but I want a true 50+mm tire that is
relatively lightweight but with decent puncture protection. Big
Apples/Bens are too heavy.

Re: [RBW] Bigger Jack Browns?

2015-10-08 Thread Ryan Ray
I was looking at those but would you ride them with a 6-6 200lb rider and
say 40-50 lbs of stuff on a 30lb bike on gravel? A guy at work rides
compass tires and they feel like he doesn't actually have tires only tubes.
In terms of flat averseness on a scale of 1-100 I am a 90. Very intrigued
though.
Right now I'm leaning towards supremes.

Thinning the clothing herd, so to speak. Add $5 shipping for first thing,

I have worn these a couple times, don't really think there are any signs of
wear but you could probably find some if you looked super hard, you can see
pics and description of the pants here:

Ibex Boucle Cardigan, Dark Madder Heather, XL

Also worn a couple times. No real signs of wear, but you could probably
find some if you went crazy searching for them. Ibex calls it a cardigan,
but I am not sure why, it's a jacket. Zips up. Nothing *screams* cardigan
about it, let alone says cardigan, but that's what they call it. It is
warmer than a baselayer, it's pretty thick, good for cold mornings. *$85*

that's the downside of being big.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose Boscos in an Amtrak box?

2015-10-08 Thread Julian
Mitch,

As I recall the Amtrak-provided boxes are quite a bit bigger than a
standard bike box. They're designed to hold a bike with both wheels still
on the bike, so as long as the bars do not stick out beyond the front wheel
you'll be ok that way. The bigger question is width, but I think it will
still work -- the only real way to tell is to turn your handlebars and
measure the width and length of the bike and bars and compare to the box
dimensions.

2015-10-08 Thread Jim Bronson
Yes. T-610 appears to be Deore "Trekking" with Dynasys, 10 speed.

Shimano doesn't really market the Trekking groups in the USA, shame.

What are you asking for the bar-ends? I'm interested because the ratios on
10 speed for 11-34 look a bit nicer in the middle where I use them - 9
speed has 2 tooth jumps only to 17, whereas 10 speed has them to 23, in
Shimano cassettes anyway, Sram seems to be different.

9: 11,13,15,*17,20,23,26*,30,34
10: 11-13-15-*17-19-21-23-26*-30-34 (This looks more usable to me in where
I do most of my riding)

[RBW] Re: Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-08 Thread Mark Reimer

I've got a 58cm Atlantis and use it for exactly the purposes you're
describing! 2.25 Thunder Burt or 2.1 Nano tires, unless it's really rainy
and I put rock n' roads with fenders on. The fat tires are awesome on
gravel and dirt roads. If it's really wet and sticky there isn't enough
clearance at the frame for such fat tires though. A 2" tire would be safer.
I've lost the paint on the inside of the frame at the tires from that, oops!

Dirt drop bars and a campee rack up front turns this into an awesome bike
packing rig. I've done full days of single track on it, as well as several
200km gravel days in a row and loved it. I'd love a Hunq one day, but
wouldn't ever exchange my Atlantis for it. They are just way too similar.
The Atlantis is like the crown jewel, queen bee, the classic! Just get one!

[RBW] Re: Clem Presale is over.

2015-10-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Conversely, this would put me on a 45cm with a low standover height. After
years of riding folders with the frame *way down there*, my creaky
53-year-old body has completely lost the plot on towering toptubes. They're
up there in the way for no reason other than most nice bikes used to look
that way. I'm over it, and I think I would be very happy with a Clem.

Re: [RBW] Bigger Jack Browns?

2015-10-08 Thread James Warren
I haven't used the superlights. I use the standards, and they were good with my 220 lbs and full large Sackville rear and trunksack small in the front on Marin Headlands dirt roads. Sam Hillborne frame.I've had good luck using them for a year, but just 3 days ago, I picked up the tiniest of thorns that must have poked through less than a millimeter, and that did give me a flat. I was a bit surprised at the wimpyness of the thorn that caused my flat.-Original Message-

I was looking at those but would you ride them with a 6-6 200lb rider and say 40-50 lbs of stuff on a 30lb bike on gravel? A guy at work rides compass tires and they feel like he doesn't actually have tires only tubes. In terms of flat averseness on a scale of 1-100 I am a 90. Anne, this is a common problem with B lights. It is caused by a poor

It is repairable but you need to have the correct terminal to replace the

Hanging gets you the cleaner, direct mount to a rack eyelet. Especially good if

that.
Read more here about the mounting benefits of the hanging Edeluxe:

Upright gets you cleaner mount to brake bolt at fork crown, or fender mount.

And I can't remember who, but I think that I read somewhere about a light that

Re: [RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Once again: compared to what I and most other people do for a living, even
scratching hole in the dirt is far, far FAR more dignified, even if less
comfortable.

This text struck me strongly; from a French essayist and museum curator, I
think, of a generation or 2 ago. Farming (not corporate farming, of course,
which is a travesty, even if I depend on it for my meals) isn't quite as
directly human, but I think it's close.

*The autonomy and self-sufficiency of primitive man is inconceivable to
us.[3]

The
absolute independence of a man who is sufficient for all his own needs and
in possession of all his own powers because he is still consciously
attached to his fostering and fertile source; the indefeasible and
indivisible dominion of such a person surpasses the understanding of a
“civilised” being, who puts himself in the same position, and supposes
himself degraded to a state of bestiality, alone, weak, poor, and naked—a
position in which he may perhaps find himself tomorrow, though he certainly
never lived in such a state in the past.*

*To understand the life of these men, clothed with skins of animals and
easily nourished by the fruits of the earth, one must allow them by way of
compensation and balance, a spirituality all the higher because it was not
inhibited by external devices. This condition corresponds to what is still
the state of pastoral peoples, and to that of the patriarchs who recite the
Bible and Koran, the dogmatic content and formal perfection of which are
incompatible with the modern theory of “primitive man”.*

FWIW, I'm really liking the Salsa Cowbells and new Cowchippers.
Unfortunately only available in 31.8 clamp size.

A 56cm Atlantis instead? It's be 26" wheels, but might fit you better than
the 58cm.

If you want the 29x2.2, I'd lean towards the Hunq.

I'd consider a 56cm Atlantis w/ Motolites and 650b wheels. Or a Bombadil.

Or the Appaloosa.

Just get one, it'll be fine.

Chris, the TB's are as close as I've found to 2.1" 700c Compass tires. I
hear slightly more road noise compared with the QB's Barlow Pass on the
same roads. They are surprisingly smooth -- much smoother and more supple
than the Smart Sams. I second all of David's description of them as well. I
have not once thought "this ride will have a lot of pavement, so though I'd
rather have gears today I'm going to take the QB -- which I did think with
the Smart Sams.

With abandon,

Wayne, I feel you pain -3 jobs since mid 2012 and I just started the latest

purchased a late 70s Motobecane Grand Touring about a year ago that I had
been trying to find for a couple years and then a bunch of new parts for
it. as things started to get tight financially I was strongly considering
selling the MB but decided I would first sell some of the new components
(on this group). I found out soon after listing the parts that I had a new
job, so I was able to hold on to the MB and the parts I can replace as I am
able. I hope you are able to find alternatives to selling your dream frame
and best of luck with the Farming venture -sounds exciting.
