Re: [RBW] Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-02 Thread Tim Gavin
Personally, I'm tempted by a Rohloff for winter use. I've had lots or
trouble with derailleur drivetrains with ice and snow.

My dream build:
Titanium frame
4-5" fat tires
Rohloff hub
Enclosed chain case, or Gates belt drive

My current fat bike eats chains regularly; that's expensive, especially
since I'm feeding it Wippermanns.

I don't think I'd equip a "normal" touring bike with a Rohloff; I've had
very few drivetrain problems except for during winter.

[RBW] 1985 trek 870 rivified and rebuilt

2015-11-02 Thread true
Very nicely done Drew.

I really like your Trek rebuild.

I expect you are going to enjoy many great rides on it.

http://vintage-trek.com/images/trek/85All-Terrain.pdf

I took a look at the specs on the vintage Trek site, Tange Prestige...nice.

I am sure enjoying several rigid vintage mtb's I have rebuilt, two of them
Trek's but 5 years newer than yours (1990)
so the geometry changed by then.

However, last week I picked up a 22" 1985 or 86 Diamondback Apex that has
pretty relaxed angles as well.
I completely disassembled it yesterday afternoon and hope to start the rebuild
today as the paint is pretty good
and a repaint/powdercoat is not necessary. It has double butted Infiniity
tubing.
I wonder what the main differences were between the Prestige and Infinity of
that era?

Did you happen to weigh the frame?
I have been weighing the various vintage mtb frames b4 rebuilding and so far
7.5 to 8.5 lbs is the range of the bare frame/fork
weights although I had one tank of a Hardrock that was 9.6 pounds for bare
frame and fork. Sold that one.
Of course all of mine have been 21,22, or 23" frames.

These are cool bikes to build up on a budget.
I have done the donation/transfer of parts thing quite a few times.

Safe pedaling,

Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Re: Practical water-resistance of Shopsacks?

2015-11-02 Thread gordo
Hey Justin,

My medium Shopsack held up just fine in this morning's 35-minute commute
through heavy rain in SF. The only downside is that the bag gets a bit
heavy from absorbing some of the water, although this is a small price to
pay for having dry goods. I keep a small trash bin liner in the bag in the
event of a torrential downpour - it's easy enough to place the Shopsack
inside the plastic bag if leakage is a concern).

It took me a long time to justify buying a $55 tote bag. However, it has
been one of my best purchases over the last few years.

Congratulations on the wedding - the weather should be nice and clear by
Saturday.

[RBW] WTB: MUSA stripe long sleeve size medium

2015-11-02 Thread gordo
Hey Folks,

I've worn my purple MUSA stripe long sleeve shirt almost every day over the
last year or so. It is starting to get holes in a few spots and I'm
getting nervous - by chance does anyone have a spare (purple or blue) that
they'd be willing to part with?

I'd be happy to buy the shirt or can offer the following items for trade:

- set of Riv Sackville mudflaps
- Nitto Noodle 46 cm (used but never crashed)
- Nitto M176 Dream bars 46 cm (used but never crashed)
- set of Clement PDX folding tires (less than 200 miles on them)
- brand new Vuelta 94 bcd chainrings - 46t outer (silver), 30 inner (black)
- size medium men's Ibex Duo cycling shorts (worn maybe 10 times and in
great shape)

Thanks for your time,

Eric

[RBW] Practical water-resistance of Shopsacks?

Hey folks-
Rainy season in the Bay Area is here! Just in time for my wedding on Saturday...

But more importantly - I carry a tote everyday whether in bike or on bus during
my commute. I have a nice new Marmot PreCip jacket and would like to give my
stuff a similarly nice home. I was looking at the ShopSacks but I don't know
how resistant/proof they are to water.

Any thoughts?

2015-11-02 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I have the tan and olive shopsacks (one large, one medium). The material is
essentially waterproof in Boston-area rainstorms during a commute ~40min.

However-- I don't think the zippers are waterproof. I could imagine that an
unlucky orientation could cause water to leak through the zippers.

Good luck-- And best wishes on your wedding, Justin!

[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-02 Thread Matthew J
Front is 46. Rear cassette is a Jeff Jones Bike modified Shimano 9 Speed
. Jeff altered the cassette
so it works on a single speed hub, allowing a dishless wheel.

I tour mainly in the upper Midwest with its relatively flat terrain (but
occasional and sometimes quite steep hills). Jeff''s standard gearing was
a little loose, so the gearing is now 14, 17, 20, 26, 30, 34.

Unfortunately it does not appear Jeff is making these anymore. I imagine
you could do pretty much the same with a standard 9 speed cassette using an
offset rim instead of dishless.

Pictures of the bike here
.
Handlebars are now MAP / Ahearne. Wound up having to switch to TRP mini-v
brakes as the Paul Mini Motos would not accommodate fenders with the tire
size I wanted. Too bad as the Mini Motos stop much better than the TRP.

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-11-02 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I think it's more of a cash flow thing. Manufacturers probably want to set
up once (for each size) to cut tubes, set up jigs, weld, and be done with
'em. Each time they change to a different size/spec, there's time lost.

Riv will probably be fine with a few unsold frames-- but paying for all the
frames upfront is tough to manage.

(I think the Clem situation of selling all the pre-sale frames was unusual,
and not really expected. Goes to show the demand for a well-thought bike at
a nice price point.)

Hope Riv sells out of these, too. I'd love to have one, but the overlap
with my Rivs and own cashflow means I'll probably pass for now.

happy riding,
shoji

Re: [RBW] Re: Practical water-resistance of Shopsacks?

2015-11-02 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I recently rode home from camping with a smaller green shopsack, HAR bags,
and a larger saddlesack through very heavy rain for about an hour.Nothing
inside my bags got wet. I do carry some plastic shopping bags that can be
used for specific items if I'm worried. I also tend to put electronic
things in plastic bags, though honestly that's more to keep them together
and unscratched than dry.

Re: [RBW] Re: New fat 700 tires! 700x42 ultra light

2015-11-02 Thread Mitch Browne
I have tried both Compass EL and Soma EX 700c tires in recent weeks
and find the Compass feels much more plush. I believe the difference
between casings between the two have been discussed in recent threads.
I do find the Soma sidewalls to be a little more stiff.

I have a set of Soma SL tires (insanity thrives) coming in a day or
two for fair SL to EL comparison.

If Compass made 700c x 42 I'd go for those without a doubt. Each rider
knows their limits in terms of wear, use, budget so EL's won't work
for everyone. I am at my limit ;)

Compass tires have no minimum air pressure or direction on sidewall.
Soma says minimum of 40 psi. In my opinion they can go a few pounds
lower but due to stiffer tread (by design for wear) they start to feel
squirrely at 35 in the rear.

I installed the Nitto Hub Area Racks and the Sackville Hub Area Bags just for
the heck of it. I used P-clamps on the mid fork and it works perfect. Rides
amazing with a small load. I could easily take this bike overnight camping. I
think it really shows how versatile Rivendell's are- even the Rodeo.

Hi Max,

Thanks so much for the positive feedback. I like your color Rodeo better.
That's my favorite and have seen it on a few of the Hunq's- stunning. I'll be
honest, the only reason I went to Albatross handlebars is because the 59cm
frame is just a little too big for me.I wouldn't go through this if it was my
perfect size bike. I think a 57cm would be the best fit for me and I might get
one some day. After trying out so many different quill stems/drop handlebar
reach combinations the bike still looked strange and handled a bit funny with
the short 50mm stem. I really like Nitto Albatross on my Sam Hillborne and I
had a set of heat-treated aluminum laying around so I thought I would give it a
try. Campy only makes 2 shifters for flat bars- bar ends or time trial shifters
or the ones I opted for which are 10 speed Veloce with integrated brake levers.
BTW, the braking with these is far, far superior to the road brifters no
question. The front shifter does not trim- it's more like exact Shimano click.
But it shifts perfect and better than the road Chorus version. You can run
triple or double. Mine is set for double. I have a White Industries VBC
crankset 44 outer/28 inner so it's wide/low compact. I set up the brake cables
but took it to my LBS to have the shifter cables installed. I purchased the
Campy 10 speed Veloce flat bar shifter/brake lever combination from Ribble in
the UK. They were $131 with shipping and no tax and included both sets of
cables and housing. Not a bad deal and too about 1 week to arrive here in San
Diego. I hope I was able to answer your questions. Again, I wouldn't go this
route if the bike fit me properly. I sometimes miss getting in the drops in a
road bar when I want to spring up hills or decent a hill. I sometimes pack this
bike in the back of my Honda Accord to take on a business trip. With road bars
it fit perfect but with Albatross I have to take the quill stem off and on
which is somewhat of a pain- the Alba's are just too wide to fit in the trunk
when on the bike.

Cheers,

Bruce

Or is the front shift a "big click," like the Shimanos?

I love the build you did, and would like to try flat bars + Campagnolo flat bar
shifters on a couple bikes (including a Roadeo), but I'm not sure how the
front derailleur would work with my triples and wide range doubles.

That's a great color for your Roadeo, and a nice build. Mine's a 2010, and
also has a Campagnolo drive train, hence my interest in your flat bar shifters.

cool, i had an 85 db apex that i built up for my dad as a city bike. i
thought it was an awesome frame, so i didnt want it to leave the family. i
dont have a scale of any sort, so i didnt weigh the trek or db frame. the
"feel" of the db with infinity, is a little heavier/sturdier, while the
trek with prestige feels more road bikey. that could have no relationship
to the tubing though, and just be the fact that diamondback was making only
mtb/bmx bikes, and trek was just dipping their toes in the mtb water. i
dont know. does yours have the extra spoke chain guard? i love that detail

Up for sale is a pair of used Force Field Fatty Rumpkin tires. 650B x 41.
I was holding onto these for a 52 Clem next summer, but now I'm thinking 55

the bay area. These were on my Bombadil, which got moved to fund a

Re: [RBW] Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-02 Thread iamkeith
That's what finally prompted me to get one, Tim. As I said, I'm a true
believer and have been since the first speedhub was released, but could
never convince myself to get one until they came out with the XL Unlike
most people, the thing that always kept me away was the grip shifter. I
still hate it, and in fact a snow bike- which is used with thick gloves
and/or sweaty wet hands - is the worst possible place for a grip shift.
But, for this use, the other benefits finally outweighed that argument.
I'm using a Whipperman chain too, but have had good luck so far. Maybe
being a fixed length and not shifting helps with wear.

That being said, the shifter isn't "so" bad for summer use on a flat bar.
You learn to live with it. All the other normal Rohloff gripes don't
bother me at all. Yes, it distributes weight more to the rear than ideal,
but you hardly notice when you're actually moving. I can even still bunny
hop well enough. Yes, you do have to let up on the pedal stroke between
some shifts but, in that sense it's sort of like with a... wait for it...
derailleur. Except that it's actually superior because you can pause in
the middle of a steep climb - even to the point of nearly doing a track
stand, shift down multiple gears at once, and then simply start pedaling
again but in a lower gear.. All of which takes microseconds. A derailleur
actually requires some amount of pedal stroke before the shift actually
takes place. And that's the best thing about it to me, and something I've
never heard anyone else articulate:

You know how, when trigger shifters were first introduced, *everybody*
would argue how much better they were than thumb shifters by saying "I
shift so much more often now"? As if there's some universal acceptance
that this is somehow better?Well, I actually find myself shifting a lot
LESS with the Rohloff, because I know I can always shift whenever I want,
if I get in trouble. I don't have to anticipate a climb and downshift
before hand, and I can always "'try" to clean something in a higher gear.
If I bog down, ANY lower gear is always right there, without needing a
partial pedal stroke to gain it. So much more relaxing, and so much more
fun.

That's why I keep daydreaming about modifying my Quickbeam. Incidentally,
this is the OEM 1 plate. See that long tab that engages the
extended-length dropout, vertically below the axle? I still don't know why
that couldn't be rotated horizontal and used to work with the extremely
long dropout slot on the QB / SO. It could even go forward of or behind
the axle, based on chainstay length preference. Unlike the torque arm
method, this would allow you to route cables under the bottom bracket and
along the chainstay, too.

I have used a large Shopsack for daly commuting for years -- a green one
mostly, and for the past few months a new grey one. They are pretty
water-resistant, but are not waterproof. The sippers are not waterproof,
and will leak, and if you're out long enough the bag will get damp inside.
If rain is predicted I carry a super light waterproof plastic bag for my

Several years use on them together. The Trunksack has cosmetic wear only,
plenty of use behind and ahead of it, no tears, rips, or leaks and the
zipper is fine (free beausage!) The rack is like new really. I trimmed
the tang to fit my Hillborne, that's it.

The VO rack

is $60 plus shipping to lower 48.
The Trunksack is $60 plus shipping to lower 48.
Together $110 including USPS priority to lower 48. Firm.

I don't do PayPal, but Google Wallet is easy painless and free. If you
must, a USPS MO by snail mail will work.

I've been using them for years. They have been water proof in all kinds of
Michigan storms. I suppose something will seep through the zipper but I
haven't noticed it and use them around town several times a week all year.
Camping, the medium works as a spare bag, for shopping and protecting odds
and ends. I even use it to carry water some times.

Re: [RBW] Re: New fat 700 tires! 700x42 ultra light

2015-11-02 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm surprised Compass even went to 38, never mind 42. Jan's theory has been
that whatever the wheel size, there is an optimum sweet spot for plushness,
speed, handling, and it so happens that when you measure wheel plus tire,
the total circumference is almost equal. I think it is something like 700C
= 32mm, 650B = 42mm, 26" = 52mm. When you start going beyond a 700 x 35, I
think the handling starts to get a bit weird. Plus your bike starts to get
pretty jacked, unless it was designed for monster tires to begin with. I
rode a bike with 700 x 41C Nimbus tires for a few years in the early 90s. I
wasn't such a tire snob back then, and I've since heard the Nimbus series
were considered dogs(no doubt stiff sidewalls, they were probably also
belted), but it was about the only thing going in a wide road tire back
then. I found it just fine for city riding, but a bit sluggish in the
turns. The bike was built with those tires in mind, but there was barely
any clearance, never mind fenders.

I realize he sells tires, and so the BQ Jan must accommodate the Compass
Jan, and Compass is already beyond his stated optimums in both 700C and
650B with the latest tire offerings (and I may go for a pair of Switchbacks
at some point.) But anyway, at some point, how much is enough already? He
has even said the Rat Traps are occasionally a bit overly bouncy on the
road.

New bike day times two Clementines! Comments: "I feel like I'm on a smooth
horse and can leap into the clouds!" "I don't even feel or hear the
shifting it's so smooth -- I just feel the difference in the pedals."
"Smoother and lighter!" "It just goes where I want it to!"

We'd sized up for them so they can grow into them and have these as their
lifetime bike if they wish (they are 12 and 14). They definitely fit just
fine with lots of room to grow into!

Colors: the black is beautiful and the turquoise stunning.

You are taking really good care of your children. Those are truly bikes
they can grow into for life. I'll bet in 30 years they're going to say
"Yea, my dad got that for me when I was a kid, & it's always been just such
a good bike."

My wife rides an Atlantis. When we were at Rivendell in the spring, she
mosied off on a Clementine, & came back with the comment "Hey, this is
kinda cool." No, we didn't take it home but still, a pretty good
endorsement.

Ouch, over $300 just for the shifters.

Imagine that is why Rohloff sticks with the grip shifters. Probably quite
complicated piece of kit.

Five years ago (former Riv customs builder) Curt Goodrich came up with a
Rohloff shifter that could be brazed on a down tube. He called it Das Knob.
  Never heard anything further
about it. Not sure if that means I and presumably whoever bought the bike
were the only people who thought it a cool idea or it did not work well.
