[RBW] NYC Rivs

2015-12-05 Thread alan lavine
Hello All,
Was wondering if any members in NYC would be interested in meeting up.
Options are completely open: short rides, trading unwanted goods,
consuming adult beverages, visiting shopsanything really, Even with
our moderate winter so far (knock on wood) I've not been riding that much
so any bike related activity is welcome.

Any ideas and/or takers? I'm in Manhattan, retired, so fairly loose as far
as scheduling is concerned. Let me know what you think...

Best,
Alan

[RBW] 60 cm Cheviot with 50 mm tires?

2015-12-05 Thread David Sprunger
Greetings. I notice in the Cheviot brochure that the largest tire
recommended for the 60 cm Cheviot is 700x50. Have any Cheviot riders used a
tire that large? If so, which tires and with which brakes?
Thanks,

[RBW] FS - Bunch of stuff from switching bikes and builds. Bags, handlebars, wheels, tires.

2015-12-05 Thread RJM
I recently sold a Sam Hillborne and bought an Atlantis and am building that
up to be a full on super touring bike so I have parts from those two builds
to sell...all so I can buy a bunch of other parts. It really is a wonderful
hobby. ;)

Rich built 650b wheelset 1 - Velocity Dyad rims, Phil "Rivy" freewheel
hubs, Shimano freewheel that Riv used to sell. This wheelset saw about a
years worth of general riding and I wasn't commuting then, so it is still
in top notch shape. 36 spokes front and rear on this one. It's a really
nice looking wheelset with those hubs and rims. $375

Rich built 650b wheelset 2 - Velocity Synergy Rims with LX hubs. 32 spokes
on this one. Still in very good condition and true. I don't currently have
a cassette on this set so it will just come as the wheelset. $300

Medium SaddleSack Olive - This is in nice shape. I recently bought this off
a list member but realized I'm just not going to use it. Selling for what I
paid. It has some marks on the bottom leather strip from sitting on a rack,
and some slight discoloration on the flap which I don't even think I can
get on camera because it is so faint. All the straps and zippers are still
good. $140

Small TrunkSack Olive - Makes an excellent small rack bag. This one is
still in nice shape with a few cosmetic marks and some discoloration but
functioning 100% and still nice looking - $75

Large TrunkSack Olive - This has the little info plate riveted to the bag
instead of a patch sewn on...like in the pictures on rivbike.com for the
large trunksack. This one is still in good shape with no holes or rips,
ect. It does have use marks where it was sitting on a rack and a little
discoloration but nothing major. - $75

Sackville Mark's ToolWrap Olive - Some discoloration from being used but
nothing major. Works 100% - $25

Compass Stampede Pass tires standard, pair - Still have at least 80-85% of
tread left. I ran these for about a month and wound up switching to a
different wheelset and tire combo. $60

Albastache bars - came on the Atlantis but I'm going to be using drops.
Nice and light bar. - $60

Nitto mini front rack - also came on the Atlantis but I'm going to be going
for a large front rack instead. - Functions and looks fine, no rust. $75

Nitto Albatross bar setup. - this setup is like new. I've installed it onto
a bike but never rode that bike. Shimano MTB brake levers, CroMo Albatross
bars, Meisha cork grips which have been shellacked, Nitto Tallux 11cm stem
- $125

Nitto Noodle bar setup for V-brakes - 41cm Nitto Noodles, 7cm Nitto
Technomic stem, Tectro road v-brake levers, bar end Silver Shifters and
wrapped with white Newbaums and shellacked to match a tan brooks saddle.
Nice looking setup and totally functional. - $135

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I have not yet
taken any pictures of these items, but I will and will include a link when
I get done being a photographer. *All these prices are marked with shipping
included* to CONUS. I can take payment via paypal, check, money order (with
a short wait for bank clearing) and will ship as soon as possible. In time
I will probably add more items to this list as I dig them out of the bike
room so stay tuned.

Totally not what you are looking for, but...
This brought to mind something I had forgotten. While in college in central
California I was earning spending money doing grease monkey and light
wrenching on a fleet of diesel trucks in a large metal building. In winter
they used to heat the place with smudge pots that were normally used to
keep citrus orchards protected during frosts. I think we burned diesel fuel
in them.

We used two of these to get through a heater-less winter a couple of years
ago (1200 sq.ft. house). They were rated the most efficient at the time
(2-3 years ago). They also shut off when the room hits temperature. One
of them is currently heating our 300 sq.ft. cottage very effectively.
Remote is convenient... when you can find it.

[RBW] Run wiring in fender or along fender/chain stays?

2015-12-05 Thread Lynne Fitz
depends also if you are planning to pack your bike for travel. My Honjos don't
travel, so both my rear tail light (Secula Plus) and the wiring are on the
frame, with a wiring splitter just behind the seatpost.

My wiring run is wrapped around the front brake cable, behind the head tube,
wrapper around the rear brake cable, then down the seatstay to where the light
is mounted. I use clear tape to secure the wiring on the seatstay.

[RBW] Run wiring in fender or along fender/chain stays?

2015-12-05 Thread William deRosset
If the frame is lugged, then there is little risk in drilling the lower head
lug for an internal wire. Exit through the lower bottom-bracket drain hole. I
put my (secula plus) fender-mount wiring along the rolled edge of the fender
and secured it in place with glue on my most recent build, though it it not
much extra work to run the wire in the rolled edge of the (Aluminum Honjo)
fender.

[RBW] Run wiring in fender or along fender/chain stays?

2015-12-05 Thread davidcha
Are you mounting the taillight directly on your rear fender? If so, Then I
would assume your fenders stay on year round so I would run the wiring inside
the rolled edge.

If you're mounting on a rear rack or seat post, etc., then external wiring may
give you more flexibility, especially if you ever run without fenders.

[RBW] Re: Run wiring in fender or along fender/chain stays?

2015-12-05 Thread Brian Campbell
It depends on the fender. If it it is a VO than I would run it along the
rolled edge using Goop sealant to adhere it, Honjo's typically have a large
rolled edge and are easier to fish the wire through. I have VO and use the
goop and the super thin wire from velo lumino. It works great.

*Full Tilt* - Devla Murphy's tale of riding from Ireland to India in 1963
*The Lost Cyclist* - The story of Frank Lenz' attempt to ride around the

[RBW] Re: (OT) NEED PORTABLE ELECTRIC shop HEATER SUGGESTIONS

2015-12-05 Thread Garth

I also prefer oil filled radiators myself as they are completely passive
, but of course by design are not "immediate" heat . This is their charm
and beauty though. No fans or any moving parts, perfectly quiet and there
is no hot air blowing around which really is not all that wonderful when
you stand in it's presence for more than a a few minutes, but that's just
me. I have a Delonghi one from a few years ago , with manual switches for
the different wattage/heat settings, usually something like 500, 1000 and
1500 with a rotary thermostat . I had no interest in the digital control
boards .

If I was going to get one today I'd look at these

holiday cheer to families -- anonymously. We talk with store managers and
look at the store's open layaway log for items that we can quickly identify
as most likely presents for children (kid’s clothes, books, a bicycle,
toys, diapers, baby food, etc.), select an open layaway between $50 - $500
that look like gifts or necessary items and complete the purchase. Then we
watch the manager call those families to tell them their items have been
paid for and they can pick the items up anytime they’d like. It helps
remind us what the spirit of the season is - selflessly giving to make
other people's lives better. It gives people hope, and in crazy times like
this it’s a great way to demonstrate there are still people who care to do
good in this world.

2015-12-05 Thread LeahFoy
J.P.'s Clem finally arrived at 7pm last night. We took it immediately to REI to
have it assembled. Sadly, the box was damaged somewhere between Oregon and
Nevada (thanks, FedEx), and when the mechanics assembled the bike, they noticed
the chain guard was mangled. It was scratched up, bent inwards and hit the
gears. Rivelo was gracious (as you know) and a replacement part is on the way.
But geez, how hard did FedEx hit that box to do that kind of damage? The rest
of the bike was largely intact. Maybe a paint ding or two, but Grant's
philosophy came to mind - something about allowing a scratch, especially if the
bike is really expensive - and we decided no big deal. The mechanics believed
the wrong hardware was sent for the rack, which makes me nervous because I
can't imagine the wrong parts were sent, and maybe the mechanics just don't
understand. I wonder if they put the rack on correctly. I'm going to pretend
they did for peace of mind. Also, anyone know the weight limit for the Clem
Pletscher rack?

We came home and we did a short ride without kids. It was so fun. I kept
looking and looking at the bike and admiring the color. I don't think anyone's
photos have showcased the true color of this bike. The blue is actually a
creamy blue/teal that just looks suave and wild and rugged and gorgeous. My
Betty looked washed out in comparison. How can this be?!? We don't have the
cork grips or the Brooks yet, but we will, because my husband has a weird
tendency to want to "match" with me. And I'm inclined to let him. Ha!

Thanks to everyone who helped me make the decision, and thanks to John at
Rivelo for making this happen! We'll ride more tomorrow!

FedEx & UPS have amazing powers. At least the damage is minor & easily
repaired. A friend rec'd his bike from one of them and the cardboard box
had 2 perfectly punched holes where someone had used a forklift to move the
box. Amazingly, the forks missed everything inside. Another time I was
assembling my Atlantis at the start of a tour when I discovered the front
wheel wouldn't drop in, and the fork legs bent out of alignment. A bit of
judicious tweaking got things straightened out. But the bike had been
shipped in one of those 30# heavy duty plastic bike boxes!

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem for my husband

2015-12-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
Yes, great pictures. Love the kissing photo! Our kids have our family of
bikes as their own family, with my wife's as the mama, mine as the Papa
(and my Quickbeam as the uncle) and theirs as the kids. REI may be right on
the rack. The eyelets are upsized on the frame and we needed a hardware run
to get the right bolts, which is why my lassies still don't have their
racks on. Fortunately we have lots of snow, so they are having snowball
fights rather than begging to do grocery runs with me. Sardonic grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
