[RBW] OTHER Turn off predict text

2016-01-02 Thread Garth
I just left the title as it was, as it is my point, the predictive text
on Google groups is comically failed, and I find no way to turn it off . I
write this on a tablet with the browser setting turned off for this
feauture, but the groups page is still doing it. I cannot see any place
in Google search settings to turn it off. Anyone know how , or do I just
give up the idea of writing here on a mobile device ? I assume it must be
something simple that I have not seen, but then again everything Google
seems hidden , only in plain sight if you know the maze to it !

[RBW] Re: Hilsen vs. rambouillet

2016-01-02 Thread Michael Hechmer
Donald, I have a Ram and a Saluki, which was the first version of the AHH.
I can't say much about riding brevets, although my experience of century
rides certainly lines up with Jim's. I run 38 mm pari moto tires on the
Saluki and 29 mm grand bois cerf's on the Ram. The Saluki is definitely
the more comfortable and I prefer it if I am riding a lot of dirt or bad
chip & seal routes. The Ram is comfortable but not as much as the Saluki.
The Ram is however lighter, quicker and more responsive than the Saluki
and I would bet that also holds true for the Ram vs AHH comparison. The
Ram feels like it climbs a bit easier and they are both rock solid on high
speed descents. To put it in Jan Hein's terms, the Ram planes better than
the Saluki.

In the end it seems to come down to a slight trade off between comfort and
performance.

[RBW] Re: Rear VO Constructeur Rack on Bleriot

2016-01-02 Thread islaysteve
Dan, I saw the Soma rack but didn't really consider it because: I'm partial
to VO products as they are local to me, the Soma rack is $20 more, and I
didn't care for the looks of the hardware that comes with the Soma, or I
didn't think I'd need it. Now that I've taken a closer look, I think that
the racks are almost identical, except that Soma includes mounting hardware
and VO does not. I say almost the same because it looks like Soma's rack
has an additional piece on the top with holes for two mounting screws for
the strut. VO's attaches the strut at the front with a bottom-facing hole
(more elegant IMO). But, with Soma's you get a slotted strut to allow
easier adjustability, at least front/rear. For the bottom mounting, you
have the option of using the axle mount, but it that would be a PIA when
removing the wheel. Again, I think the bottom tang is the same (with two
holes) as the VO rack. Therefore you'd need to cut it on the 650b Bleriot
in order not to interfere with the axle cutout on the dropout. I hope this
is clear. On the Soma rack, you would still need to bend the top strut in
order to connect it with the brake bridge. I will say that Soma's method
appears to give you a better chance at getting the rack absolutely level
vs. VO's series of holes. (It's too bad that Soma doesn't give you more
info or photos of the rack. Maybe you could call them.)

In terms of work, I think you can get by with a hacksaw (straight cut
across the bottom tangs between the two holes) and something to clamp the
top strut in to bend it into a curve. As I said, a bench vice helps a lot
there. For either strut (VO or Soma) you don't HAVE to cut off the excess,
it just looks better if you do. You can clean up the cuts on the bottom
tangs a bit with a file, but it's not an area that's very noticeable
anyway. So the bottom line is that the choice between the two racks is up
to you and you will probably end up doing about the same work either way.
I am very happy with the rack on my bike. It's solid and does that job of
holding bags and other stuff. I'm sure that it would take a smaller
pannier as well, or some grocery bags rigged like panniers (?) I do think
that the VO rack wins a bit in the appearance dept due to the top mounting.
If you get the VO you will need the XL strut, as the standard strut would
not be long enough for the Bleriot setup. Both are sold separately. The
rack with XL strut comes out to $100.50 before tax and shipping. That is,
unless you have fenders, in which case some of this discussion is
irrelevant. Where are you located? In any event, good luck with your
choice and your rack. Happy New Year,
Steve

[RBW] Re: Big bike jinxing- big Clem?

2016-01-02 Thread Garth
I ride a 60 Bombadil and I am about 6 2or3 and find it to be "just" large
enough frontwise so there was no way the 59 Clem would be "big" in any
sense of he word ! The HT extension and the TT slope is not any greater
than the Bomba is , so there is nothing atypical about the Clem from it,
meaning the 59 is not going to feel any larger than it the 60 Bomba. Also,
the front center of the Clem was actually shorter also, not something I
am interested in. 3 cheers for a larger Clem-entine !

[RBW] Re: Hilsen vs. rambouillet

2016-01-02 Thread John Hawrylak
Don
I would concentrate on calculating the required the AHH stem to get the
same saddle to bar distance as on the Ram, with the bars at the same drop
with respect to the same saddle height on both, e.g, if the AHH saddle
height is 75cm an bars are even with saddle, then set the Ram up to be
same, measure the Saddle to Bar distance and compute the required AHH stem
to get the Ram Saddle to Bar distance.

If the calculated new AHH stem is reasonable, not too short, then the AHH
should fit like the Ram

It seems strange there is such a large, 3cn, difference in the 2 frame
sizes.

*Sigh...*

I don't know, Garth. Perhaps the 59 Clem I have sitting in my living room
was a fluke, and was accidentally built bigger than the other 59s. Or
perhaps the one you're riding was built smaller. That would certainly
explain why your posts always seem argumentative.

I get the whole zentastic, *"if you search deep within yourself
grasshopper, you will discover that you already have all that you need
- your bike can be anything you want it to be"* thing. But I also think
it's ok if someone wants to own multiple bikes set up for different
purposes, and wants them to fit appropriately for *those* uses, in the way
that the designer intended. Nobody on this Rivendell-centric forum is a
rampant consumer who is swayed by the latest bike trends. We like threaded
headsets and square-taper cranks, for crying out loud. But it's still a *bike
forum* and, for some of us, the passion still lies in the exploration of
different geometries and setups, and in discovering the effects and nuances
of subtle changes, and in having a small "quiver" of bikes to compare -
even (or especially) if its all part of the journey toward figuring out
what our ideal "only" bike might some day be.

The Clem was intended and described as "a townish bike with mountainish
capabilities," to be used with a lot of saddle setback and a very upright
riding position. So it would necessarily require a substantial amount of
standover clearance, to work as intended. If someone was bent on using it
as something else - like a road bike with a stretched-out, aero riding
position - then *of course* they could make a larger frame work. If you're
personally riding a 60 bombadil at 6'-2 1/2", then I suspect that this is
what you're doing. That's perfectly ok because, in your own words, "it's
your damned bike." I'm pretty sure Rivendell would have put you on a 56
though, if they made typical assumptions about how you'd use it.

The point of my original post was to let semi-tallish people - who might
now be or who might have been reluctant to buy a Clem, or who are holding
out in hopes of a 64 - know that they should at least take a look at the
59, because it might actually work really well. It will work at least as
well as, if not better than, it does for me at 6'-1 1/2", with *negative*
standover clearance. That was all. But you have a valid point that,
depending on how you want to set up and use the bike, your mileage may vary.

Keith, who is jacked up on pain meds from New Year's Eve foot surgery, and
who will probably regret writing this.

[RBW] Re: Hilsen vs. rambouillet

2016-01-02 Thread Lungimsam
If these bikes are drop bar setups with exact same saddle and bars and hoods,
measure these measurements of the bike you want to duplicate in cm:
Saddle setup:
1.Seat height
2.Seat tilt
3.Seat nose fore/aft to center of stem bolt measurement
Last,
4.Saddle height from floor to saddle top
Bar/stem setup:
5.Drop bar tops from floor to bar tops measured at close to the stem clamp.
6.Seat nose fore/aft to deepest part of brake hoods (along the inside curve
where your hand rests on the hood.). Note tilt of bars on reference bike before
measuring and recreate. If profile shows bar ramps in line with stem extension,
etc.
#6 is the last thing you do once you get the bar height and tilt done. Get the
left lever in place where you want it, remove bars and level them by getting
the right lever adjusted with a table as reference like in the RBW handlebar
setup video. Then reinstall at the correct bar to saddle height.

Combining the results of 4 and 5 gets you your bar height to saddle measurement
to see how many cm below or above saddle your bars are. Measurements of saddle
and bar height from floor must be taken with bike in same upright position for
accuracy.

Adjusting hoods, individually moving them up or down along ramps to duplicate 6
can be tough.

Recreating these saddle and stem/bar measurements can be frustrating and a
balancing act. Set up the saddle measurements first. The do bar tilt, height,
and hoods last. Make sure the stem bolt is tight or your #3 measurement will be
off.

[RBW] Re: Big bike jinxing- big Clem?

2016-01-02 Thread Garth
 You're right iamkieth . We're both right , and saying that . . . . I
pause and sigh myself because being "right" is a kind of hell. No winners ,
no losers, just lots of explaining why we fail or succeed in this, that or
the other. No one is ever full satisfied, ever. It has no end, until the
nonsense of all such things attributed to individuality is seen so clearly
there is no individuality present or ever was or could be.

  So I would apologize to you . . . . that goes on in "hell" too . . .
and it's never satisfying . But I ask, who's really here , but "I" and
"me" ? Are "we" not all known as "I" and "me" ? Of course we are . An
"apology" then would be but an acknowledgement that no one is here but "I"
and "me" , so offense is quite impossible , and no defense needed.

If I was reading this as an individual not name "I" and "me" . . .
they'd think this writing is nonsense, pointless, OT etc. etc. And they'd
be quite "right" ! Of course none other but "I" and "me", the "who am I ?"
of "all that is", is ever Present ,so such nonsense is nonexistent .

  And ever still . . . . it's al-lways a GooD Day to Ride !

I am disappointed if this is the long rumored tall bike I have been waiting
for. I thought they were going to go for more of a roadish bike.

[RBW] Re: Rear VO Constructeur Rack on Bleriot

2016-01-02 Thread Dave Johnston

Before you cut that tang, you might consider using a Sheldon nut to mount
the tang to the other side of the brake bolt. It would make removing/adding
the rack easier without messing up the brake positioning. OTOH I rarely
take racks off of bicycles once they go on.

I have a Tubus Stainless steel Luna on the back of my Bleriot. I got it
used off the list a while ago. Seems like a lot easier to install. Its
pretty light too. I don't think they make that model any more, but the
Tubus racks are great.

Forgot to mention seat tilt is measured with a board on top of saddle and a

I'm looking for a used or otherwise cheap Nitto 177 Noodle handlebar in
44cm width.

The beat-er the better, this bike will not lead a charmed life.

Replies off list, please and thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Big bike jinxing- big Clem?

2016-01-02 Thread Kainalu
Lower price, sold complete, however they want. I've been wanting a long bike
since forever!, which is exactly as long ago as the mystery bikes became less
mysterious. That said, I'm fully satisfied with my might be slightly too small
64 Hillborne and my perfect 68 Quickbeam. I would love a 71 Homer for the fact
that I've got plenty of clearance on my 68, but my impulse is pulling me
towards a slowish beefcake tractor pull bike not unlike the Clems. If it were a
step through monster mixte, even better, but I've been told that's a bit wiggly
in the big lengths I'm looking at. There is hope for the monstermixte though, I
saw that another known 100+ pbh'er might be picking up a frame jig, and they've
mentioned similar interests in frame directions. Fingers crossed for beta test
blemish frames...
As for the rumored big road bike, it's still in the works, didn't sound like it
was a priority. A giant Rodeo doesn't interest me anyhows, as I said, I Me It
That am totally satisfied. Just rolling

Do you mean lower price and sold complete? Because if we're just talking
frames, the AHH fits what you want. $1000 more than Sam but worth it to get a
bike that actually fits someone over 6'5".
