[RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom and Bridgestone MB-1 For Sale

What model is the Riv? I'm interested but need more details, particularly
standover height and some sense of what the widest tire I can fit on the
bike is. If you aren't sure, I'll contact Rivendell with model info myself
and ask.

Thanks

they feel livelier than the 622-40 Marathon Winters I ran on my Sam Hillborne

some sellers, they inspire supreme commuting confidence in terms of grip,
ability to fight through 1-2" of snow and with decent rolling resistance to
boot. The relaxed Jones geometry, long wheelbase and spikers make for an
all-weather limo.

Bar end brake levers and thumbshifters mounted about the same place as the
former brake lever mount (on the top-inside-the-curve). I have all my Alba

I simply prefer to "reach out" for a shifter than a brake lever.

[RBW] Re: Brake Levers for Albastache?

2016-01-12 Thread Garth

As I mentioned, I do this on Alba bars , here's a pic of one bike .
With a Albastache and it's larger diameter bars I'd first use some Falcon
friction thumbshifters that I bought years ago and are still for sale. They
are rather generic in that I've seen the same shifter under a different
name. These are a plastic ratcheting mechanism so I don't expect SunTour
durability.
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/shifting-freewheels-cassettes/shifters/falcon-friction-thumb-shifters.html
http://www.amazon.com/EVO-E-Thumb-Friction-Shifter/dp/B00ZINPZUO

These have a decidedly low tech clamp that can be used for mtn. or road
bars . Otherwise I'd use the VO thumbie mounts Zed linked with some Suntour
power ratchet levers I've have. A stem mount would be another option but
I've never done that. With those shifter it would like kinds like this, a

[RBW] iBOB crosspost - thinking about 2nd fork to make Redwood lower trail.

2016-01-12 Thread David Banzer
I posted this over on iBOB, but certainly would appreciate feedback from
those who have tried out low trail forks on their Riv.

I'm considering as a winter project, rebuilding my Riv Redwood as a
low-trail 700c bike. I'm not going to mess with the original fork, so my
options would be finding a high rake donor fork, going custom, or re-raking
one of these unpainted Riv forks: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f5.htm.
I'm going with the Riv fork as the fork crown would be the same as the
original and it would have the upper/mid brazeons and double fork eyelets.
I should've bought one of these when they were 25% off before the New Year,
but oh well.
I've talked with a local framebuilder and he's able to re-rake it for a
fairly minimal cost. Re-raking would effectively shorten the fork length,
which actually would be perfect as the clearance on the new Riv fork would
be greater than the original fork.
I could even rattle-can it with this:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Testors-3-oz-Lime-Ice-Lacquer-Spray-Paint-3-Pack-1835MT/204481439
I need to look into the overall durability of that paint, but if it'd work,
it's a pretty darn close color match to the original paint:
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz136/dabanzer/Rivendell%20Redwood/B61B6C6D-7A97-413F-AF27-B9238D63044B_zpspuzmrkru.jpg

My main question is this: What rake would be appropriate for this 700c bike
running Compass Barlow Pass (38mm) tires? Headtube is 73 degrees. I'm
leaning towards 65mm rake, which would give a trail measurement of 40mm.

Any thoughts - including don't do it - are appreciated.

Nice bike Zed! We haven't had snow yet this year, maybe we'll get a coating
this afternoon. Last year I was out in the snow and ice on my Surly Big
Dummy, not that has a long wheel base and rode just fine, so I get what
you're saying. Schwalbe Fat Franks at 2.35" and a low tire pressure helped
too.

Happy trails,

[RBW] Re: Whatever else people feel about the long bikes...

2016-01-12 Thread Zed Martinez
I hadn't thought about something like a big dummy, I bet that's an
interesting winter ride too. Those are disc, aren't they? How do you find
the disc braking in icing conditions on that? Was my experience with the
Felt mostly due to poor weight balancing on the frame, or is it something
more inherent in how crisply discs can lock a wheel?

[RBW] Re: Whatever else people feel about the long bikes...

2016-01-12 Thread NickBull
Maybe you can sell him some 650B studded tires ...

In my experience, no bike that is just on rubber tires is going to do all
that great on rutted ice. And many models of studded tires don't do all
that well on rutted ice, either. If the studs are only along the
centerline, then they only help you climb out of the rut once the tire is
nearly perpendicular to the rut. So that means you have to slide almost
far enough to go down before the tire even catches. I've settled on Nokian
Extreme 296's because the studs on the edges of the tire do a good job of
catching in ruts. But even with those tires, there were several patches on
last-year's winter commute where the ice was so choppy and the ruts so deep
and exactly the width of my tires that I got off and walked a hundred
yards, rather than risk going down. This is winter commuting in DC, where
the bike trails that I ride do not get plowed for almost all of my 7-mile
winter commute.

David:

A few years ago I had Tom Matchak
(http://tommatchakcycles.blogspot.com/2007/03/frame-neutral-replacement-fork.html

) build a lower trail fork for my Atlantis. It's 40 mm trail, and I use 40
to 45 mm tires on my 700c wheels. It came out nice & I like the
improvement in handling (I like front loads). He used a crown that's not
far off the stock one and it doesn't stand out. Tom was very accomodating
about adding the various attachment fittings. I have 2 eyelets at the fork
end; a thru attachment mid-fork for low rider rack, and the upper hour
glass eyelets for the small Nitto front rack.

I had the fork on my original prototype Heron Road pulled to 55 mm, which
was as far as John Sotherland felt he could take it without risking
collapse. It only has clearance for 28's. I also have a Terraferma 650B
ultra low trail bike for comparison. I loved the Heron as designed and
built, but I like it even better with the extra rake. It can take a light
load in a handlebar bag and feels like just the right balance of stability
and responsiveness. I don't feel any need to add more rake than that. By
comparison, my Terraferma is a very difficult bike to ride no hands, and
gets worse as weight is added to the front bag. For the sake of science,
I'm having Waterford make a new fork for that bike, with a bit less rake.
My hypothesis is that the current fork is not aligned properly, and that a
fresh, properly aligned fork will make a lot of difference, while the 4mm
less rake won't make much difference at all.

Keep in mind that a different fork may have a different axle-to-headtube
dimension, which would change the head angle. Adding more rake changes the
angle again. If you start with the same length fork and add some rake, you
will steepen the head angle. A little trig work will tell you by how much.
I will have to check my archives to see what I calculated the effect is on
my Heron.

Can you really fit 38's in the Redwood? Sounds like a great bike for the
vertically enhanced folk.

[RBW] Re: iBOB crosspost - thinking about 2nd fork to make Redwood lower trail.

2016-01-12 Thread David Banzer
Hi Ted,
The Redwood will fit Compass Barlow Pass tires, mine measure 37mm so
technically not 38mm. No room for fenders though, and I'm using Tektro
sidepulls, the bigmouth variety.
The Riv Sam fork (sidepull version) is longer than the Redwood fork, so
with re-raking I'm hoping it'll get close to the fork length of the
original fork.
When I first got my Redwood, I tried it with a tall Acorn rando bag and
didn't care for the handling. If I could improve the handling with a loaded
front bag, the Redwood would be my ideal road bike.

[RBW] Re: Whatever else people feel about the long bikes...

2016-01-12 Thread Zed Martinez
Nick, I had 35mm Winter Marathons last year. Studs all around the profile,
great reviews from everyone. Bit it quite a few times, they were just
narrow enough to just follow the ruts. I'd have just enough traction to
twist the wheels out from under me. I've seen a few nice new models of 650b
winter studs on the docket I can maybe get next year, but this year my
choice was basically between a fatter tire with knobbies only, or a thinner
one with low stud count, and considering how often I went down last year on
'thin' and high studs, I opted for just the fatter this year. So far, it's
been better. I imagine fat + studs would be better still. But, for my
conditions, the fatter has been better than the studs even on ice so far.
