Hey Kyle,

I had the same happen to my Hetres, I called Jan at Compass and he sold me
a new tire at his cost. Not the most favorable solution but a solution.

[RBW] abe, joe, tom and I ride around sf

2016-03-06 Thread Patrick D Kelly
My buddy Dave Abercrombie (commonly known as Abe) and I went for a little
ride around SF today. He on his Bombadil (Tom) and I on my Joe Appaloosa.

photos: https://flic.kr/s/aHskvHWLea
gps: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/8063583

(I neglected to turn on my gps until we reached the bay, but we actually
started where the ride ended, so it was a complete loop.)

We rode from central SF, north to the beach, then west to the GG bridge. We
rode over, and I wanted to get a photo of the Robin Williams tunnel.
Unfortunately you cannot go there on a bicycle. But at least I got a lousy
photo. Then back across the bridge and continuing west and then south
until we reached GG park. Then thru the park, back to "home".

This was my first real ride on a joe. It's an easy bike to ride. :) Riding
in SF gives plenty of up and down hill action.

I moved my saddle back a bit at one point, which is surprising to me, since
it's already got a setback seatpost, and the seat tube angle is supposed to
be super mellow. I suspect it has to do with the bars coming back so far.
Gonna have to pay attention to my knees to find out where's the right
position for the saddle.

Sitting so upright is a little disconcerting. I feel like I should be
wearing more tweed. Still unknown if I'm gonna stick with this bar, or
change it up.

[RBW] Re: Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-06 Thread Wayne Naha
Yes there are non-destructive ways to test what appears to be a crack, dye
penetration test or magna-flux to name two. They do require specialized
tools, materials and training. A frame builder, or someone else with
experience in the area can determine if it is a crack by visual inspection
when the crack is obvious. If there is any doubt, a test is preformed.
The dye penetration test is the simplest and it wouldn't surprise me if a
well stocked frame builder had such a test kit.

[RBW] Re: Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-06 Thread Wayne Naha
As second owner, any warranty offered by Riv does not apply. If it is a
crack, which is not completely certain, it would at the least, need to be
stop drilled. That will prevent any further propagation of the crack. I
would say that a crack will certainly grow if left unattended. Stop
drilling it will buy you some time to decide if you want to go the route of
replacing the tube or not. I would avoid any further sanding, and remove
any more paint by chemical means. If you get it evaluated and the tube is
cracked, stop drilling may be all you need. It's a good first step, but it
would need regular inspection after that. If the crack progresses beyond
the stop drill holes, then you are assured that the head tube is garbage
and will need replacing. My guess is that replacing the head tube and
repainting the frame would equal the cost of a new Sam, but maybe not.
Anyway, it's not hard to do the drilling yourself. Plug the holes with
silicone caulk. Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-06 Thread Mark Williams
It sounds worse than it is. Our normal annual rainfall is 37" but we've had
38" since Dec1.
It's not really cold, as in Tennesee, but more wet and cool.
With the right equipment- fenders, reflectors, sealed bearings your bike will
be fine. Layers, gloves, and booties and you will be fine. The bigger deal is
having facilities at work to shower, hang dry your clothes and safely park your
bike.
We have a great mass of commuters- enough so that autos pay notice to your
existence.

[RBW] Re: Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-06 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Edwin, I have had two frames crack at a headtube lug, both frames built by
the same frame shop. I rode them for weeks in that condition including a
long race that included a significant mountain climb and descent. That is
how young and dumb and poor I was. My point is you are probably alright for
the short term, but you might want to get it checked reasonably soon.

[RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-06 Thread dstein
To further clarify, I'm worried that there are 2 month or longer stretches
where its so rainy that you can't fit any riding in. (I realize that this
is subjective to most people who brave rain, snow, or sleet, but I am not
one of them :)) In Tennessee I'd get pretty beat up by 2 months of no
riding in December-February, worried it'd be like that but much, much
longer.

[RBW] Seattle riding weather

2016-03-06 Thread dstein
Question for the Seattleites on here. I know the riding is great in and
around Seattle. Well I don't 'know know', but I imagine it is, lots of
various terrain and an endless supply of nature and picturesque landscapes.
But how is the weather for year round riding? Contemplating a move in a
year or two, possibly to Seattle since that is where my company is based
out of and my job is supposed to be. I know it rains a lot. I hear the
weather is shitty like 9 months out of the year. But I've been spending a
lot of time there recently and it seems that while its constantly gray and
cloudy, its usually not actually raining. Is this the case? Do you find
that you can get out most weekends on a ride (I work banker hours and
weekends are my riding time).

To put it in more context: I live in the Bay Area, and am spoiled by year
round world class riding weather. Seriously, there are like 6-7 weekends a
year when its raining, and when it does it rains it does so for a few weeks
straight and I eventually end up suiting up in some rain proof garb and
going for it, and usually end up hating every second of it, but hard to
complain since it rains so seldom. I previously lived in Tennessee, where I
was used to more inclemental weather, and I'd say there I averaged a good
ride every other weekend throughout the year (more riding in the spring and
fall, less in the cold, icy, winters and oppressively hot summers).

[RBW] Re: My Joe Appaloosa

2016-03-06 Thread dougP
For a guy who only got into it today, you sure work fast! That came out
beautiful. On the pedal question, Wellgo supplies some to REI that are
metal (probably re-cycled aluminum) with a rubber insert on the shoe
surfaces. They retail for less than $20 & are ideal for flip-flop or
sandals in general. Recently I picked up a couple pair of Ergon pedals at
REI's online outlet. These are plastic, sorta foot shaped & have a 3M
non-skid surface. When they came out they were IIRC $80 which seem a bit
much for plastic. On the outlet they were under $30. I've ridden these
off-road & like them better than the Wellgos, which are perfectly
serviceable too.

The rear loop of the saddle is narrower than the spacing of the saddlebag
loops, but there are no sharp edges, so I'm not disqualifying the saddle on
these grounds.

I do like the pedals a lot. It's got a great sealed bearing. They install
with an 8mm allen from the inside (no pedal wrench flats). The black body
is plastic, with medals spikes. There's a model number K926 with a wavy
logo preceding it. I think that might make them Wellgo brand, but I can't
find any online info for that model number. They might be strictly OEM
pedals.

having spent a lot of time in my career looking at weld and braze cracking
in the process of building rocket engines I'm not so sure its a crack
from the pictures taken. And I seriously doubt anyone at Riv could tell
without seeing the actual bike. I think more paint needs to be removed to
make it more visible. I would look in your area for a framebuilder who
does lugged bikes and have he/she look at it before sending it across the
country to Riv.
If it is a crack, it most likely occurred during the original frame
fabrication from overheating during brazing. I have a hard time seeing how
this could be use related in this location.

Yeah, send to Riv. Looks like the lug point might have caused some sort of
a stress-riser there.

[RBW] My Joe Appaloosa

2016-03-06 Thread Bill Lindsay

I picked up my Joe Appaloosa Thursday night. I had to pack that night for
a bike race, and the race consumed my Friday and Saturday for the most
part. I went ahead and did my first pass at making it mine. I installed
Dutch paddle grips, trimmed all the cables and housing, and wrapped the
forward part of the Choco Bullmoose bars with yellow Newbaums, shellacked
with amber.

I've also installed an R-14 rack and a Saddlesack Medium. As pictured the
Choco Moose bars are slammed. My SH is 75.5cm. That's a 55cm Appaloosa.

I would say either
Tube defect from the tube manufacturer
Overheating during the brazing process with a lug having a ID too large and
out of specification

The small crack coming out of the large upper crack is puzzling
The lug seems to have excessive space to the tube

Second the suggestion to contact RBW, but as 2nd owner

This rang a bell & I dug out an old Ram brochure. The geo chart lists HT
angles at 71 in the small sizes, 72, 72.5, then from 58 on up to 68
(wowser!) all are 73 degrees.

The 56 is recommended for riders 5'-5" to 5'-9", and 58 for 5'-7" to
5'-11". The specs refer to the color as "an unusual blue" & all photos are
blue, with no racks, fenders, front bags, saddle bags and just a little
teensy seat bag. The bike looks positively nekkid and racy compared to
most Riv web photos, aside from the Roadeo.

[RBW] Update: Cheviot tire clearance

Colleagues,

I have been enjoying an uncharacteristically nice March day in Fargo by
tooling about on my Cheviot. Before I got everything wet and dirty, I took

As I have worked on this bike, I was worried about tire clearance with the
Big Apples and caliper brakes, but as the pictures show, this was not an
issue in the end.

Re: [RBW] Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-06 Thread Eric Norris
OK, let me say first of all that I’m not an expert and *not* a metallurgist.

However … yes, that looks like a crack to me, but I’m not sure I’d be worried
about a catastrophic failure anytime soon.

Not being an expert, I’m trying to puzzle out what the stresses are on the head
tube, and I can’t think of any like those that would affect, say, the bottom of
the seat or down tubes, where you have a lot of forces and torsion from the
drivetrain. Yes, there must be some forces there, but not as concentrated.

I would watch the crack and see if it spreads any further. Any reasonably
skilled framebuilder can put a new head tube in, but with repainting you’re
going to be looking at several hundred dollars worth of fixing.

Very nice job Brian! So glad you're putting it to such good use. You'll be
amazed at the handling once you out a heavier front load.

So funny that you say it feels slightly large. I'm 5'11" and it didn't feel
large to me. The 60 Bombadil I had first did though.

It seems like you're going to enjoy it a lot. I'm so happy for you!

I was performing a very rare bike cleaning and saw a bit of a chip in the
paint of the headtube on my Sam. It is a 60cm, single top tube orange one
with side pulls, if you are interested. I am the second ownder and have put
5000 or so miles on it over the last three years.
Can you all take a look at the two photos posted here

What to do about it? Replace the head tube? What size of a job is that?

Any other wisdom would be appreciated.

Re: [RBW] JoAppa has arrived!

2016-03-06 Thread Patrick Kelly
I did in fact pick up my new joe yesterday. It was raining all day
yesterday, so didn't get a chance to get any photos. But today is
basically gorgeous in SF, so I got to take some photos.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/phlatphrog/sets/72157665354969562/

I managed to snag one of the very last longboy racks before they were
sold out. Riv stashed it somewhere for me, and Mark installed it
before pickup. I requested that it be mounted on the lower mount
point, rather than on the mount point on the seat stay. I was confused
by looking at this photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/9ejXZlLxFD/ It
looked to me like the top of the rack is way too high over the tire.
What I didn't realize is that that is a 650b wheel. That is a size 51
joe app, while mine is a size 55, with 700c wheels. When I was at riv
HQ Mark happened to walk through, and he explained to me that the
lower mount point is actually even lower than most bikes because the 2
mount points near the rear axle are rotated back a bit, compared to
other bikes. In order to actually mount the longboy there, he had to
trip a bit of metal off the mounting tab on the rack. (You can see
that here: https://flic.kr/p/DZbVDj) So at this point, the rack fit is
quite tight, and I may actually need to raise it if I put fatter tires
on.

The other tweaks, so far, are that I swapped the saddle, the brake
levers, and put on some grip rings.

I have a brooks b17 that I might swap to, or I might stick with this
one. Was not too excited about the standard saddle.

The standard brake levers can be mounted, as I received the bike, with
the bolts sticking up, and into your hands if you try to grip in that
area, or if you reverse the levers, with the bolts almost blocking the
gear shift levers. I did try it reversed, and it did work, and they
were not stabbing my hands, but I opted to get some brake levers that
give a little bit more wiggle room.

I'm sort of planning to wrap the bars. The grip rings are not
permanent, but they're easy (well, relatively easy) to put on/remove,
and I can try different positions for the levers for a while before I
do anything "permanent" with bar tape.

The bag tied to the rack is for a ride this afternoon. I don't have
any real bike bags with me. I was planning to maybe purchase a
backabike bag when I picked up the bike, but it turns out riv is sold
out of them, in all colors.

I've never had a bike with a kickstand before. Still having to
remember that I don't have to lean it against things when I want to
leave it for a second.

2016-03-06 Thread dougP
Somewhere in the archives is an extensive thread entitled "Is the Ram the
best Riv ever?" or something similar. It was a few years ago and the
general argument was that the Ram was the sweet spot for an all-rounder.
Light enough to be sporting yet able to carry a light touring load. IIRC
owners were passionate about these bikes so that may be a reason why they
so seldom change hands.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 54cm Quickbeam on Los Angeles Craigslist

2016-03-06 Thread ted
Orange of course.
I think the thing with the small sizes is there weren't many made so they are
rare, but the reason rbw kept the production low is because they don't sell.
Thus if you want one it'll probably be hard to find, but if you are trying to
sell one it may take a long time.

Thanks guys.

Kevin, I was able to use the existing shifter cables and didn't have to cut
them, they were quite long to begin with, and switching to albas also gave me
some length from the boscos. I got lazy with the brake cables though and was
able to switch out the levers without even un-hooking the cables at the brake
so I'll have to go back and shorten those up one day.

[RBW] Re: Clem Controls

2016-03-06 Thread KevinS
Hey Tim, your Clem looks great. I also have the 59 in Grey and I'm thinking
about adding bar end shifters. Where you able to keep the existing cables or
did you need more length for this set-up? Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Northern CA riders - help me with route suggestions

2016-03-06 Thread ed k
Ted, that is an awesome route from Tracy to Walnut Creek via Diablo. The plan
was a friend would drop me in Sonora, but I may ask her to take me to Tracy on
her way back to Oakland. But if I cheat like that I may as well go someplace
really cool for a start. Not sure yet where, there are lots of choices. Maybe
the best thing is to book a few days of leave and decide once I get there. The
trip to Sonora should tell me all I need to know about riding the straight and
ugly roads. If it is a no-go I could drive back through it to an idyllic start
point. But I won't drive to Walnut Creek. This is a great opportunity to bike
Northern Ca. I will take pix and be in touch. Thanks to all for helping me
think this through.

[RBW] Re: Any Gevenalle users?

2016-03-06 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
I replaced the vintage Ultegra brifters with the Audax shifters on our
tandem a few years ago. I wasn't able to use bar-end shifters because we
already had a lever for the drum brake in the end of the bar. The shifters
work perfect in friction mode on the 3x8 derailleurs.

The shifters are in front of the brake levers, so you don't even know they
are there until you reach for them to shift.

I have to agree on index shifters for 9-sp and higher. I have my first
ever, Microshift thumbies, which i went for after the Microshift bar-ends
worked so well on my daughter's go-fast.
Good-looking setup.

It's good to hear that the better controls solved your problem and that you're
enjoying your new bike. Index shifting is indeed somewhat under appreciated
around here. Best wishes for the recovery if your daughter. It must be tough
on her and on her parents! Take care, Steve
