You can angle your bars so the ramps are flat, then rotate your brake levers up
the ramps to get them closer reach.

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-13 Thread Joe Bernard
I agree with your impressions, Jeremy. I've owned any number of bikes with
upright bars/talk stems, including several Rivs, and my CLEM is the first one
to handle them (on pavement) with a "planted" feel to the front end. All the
other ones were a bit recumbentish in that the rear always felt like it was dug
in and pushing, while the front felt like it might wash out in a hard-charged
corner. The CLEM is much more balanced for that riding position.

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-13 Thread Jeremy Till
Most of the thread has focused on the benefits/deteriments for off-roading,
but I feel that the long chainstay thing has real benefits for
road/pavement riding with upright bars. I've done a fair bit of riding on
bikes with "normal" chainstays (Quickbeam and LHT) and upright handlebars
(Alba, Bosco, Avenir Circa) and when you really raise the bars for comfort,
you noticeably reduce the weight on the front wheel, making the controls a
bit more squirrely and making you less confident about cornering with real
speed, lest the front wheel washes out on you. The long chainstays
redistribute the weight and help have more cornering confidence with an
upright riding position. Maybe not a big deal for some but maybe something
you think about if, for instance, you ride your bike with upright bars up
Mt. Diablo and then do the very curvy descent down.

At least that's my understanding of the theory/impetus behind the long stay
bikes, from talking to Keven and reading Grant's words, and my experience
riding longtail cargo bikes. I just built up my Clem and it definitely has
a lot more front wheel authority than my LHT did with upright bars. I
haven't ridden it much but I'm looking forward to getting more miles on a
Riv long chainstay design, both on road and off

Re: [RBW] Noodle bars: Any upsweep on the flats?

2016-06-13 Thread Jack B
Bummer. Well thanks for the info Keith.

I just now made an adjustment that might help: I tilted the Mark's bar up
so that the flats (behind the hoods) are a better resting spot. Rode around
the block and they feel good.

The ramps are steep now, maybe too steep, but I don't ride there much.
Kinda new to drop bars so still trying to get it dialed in.

[RBW] Noodle bars: Any upsweep on the flats?

2016-06-13 Thread Jack Barnes
I've been riding on VO's Rando

bars, but have decided that they have too much forward reach. Switched over
to a Mark's Bar that I have in the parts bin, and I'm finding that I like
the reduced reach but miss the upswept flats. Would the Noodle give me some
of this effect? Hard to tell from the pics.

I don't need it to be as swoopy as the rando bars. Nitto's rando bar looks
like a decent option, but too narrow — I'm looking for a 46 or 48cm width.

thanks,
Jack

Where are you? You might be able to find a Quickbeam or SimpleOne owner who
will let you take a test ride. If you're near NYC, you're welcome to try my
62.
I'm around a 90pbh and my QB rides great...although it doesn't have much
seatpost showing. I like the way frame on the large side ride. And I seem
to have long arms/torso, so big frames keep me from having to use really

Yeah, Bill, I wondered about that as I was posting this. Of course, as
Richard points out in the long chain stay thread, they also mean you can't
pop the front wheel over rocks and roots as easily, so there is a trade off.

I'm pondering eventually trying a 7cm stem and just always riding with the
front TrunkSack with a standard load in it to counter balance.

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-13 Thread Eric Karnes

I assumed OP was referring to the move to suuuper long chain stays on bikes
like the Appaloosa and Clem.

I was wondering this myself. I actually really like it on frames like the
Appaloosa. Reminds me of (an extended version of) the old steel Specialized
Rockhopper I saved up for as a kid. That bike was really fun on trails.
Super stable and felt like it could roll over anything (or so remembers my
14-year-old self).

That said, I hope they stick with some of the more standardized (for them)
chain stays. As someone who lives in a small apartment and locks up bikes
in the city, super long wheelbased bikes are a very big disadvantage. Even
slightly longer chain stays make a noticeable difference when carrying a
bike daily up and down three flights of stairs. Of course on most Rivs the
ride makes this 100% worth it.

2016-06-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
Fascinating, Richard. Thank you. The longer chain stay Hunqapillar is one
of the things I've wondered about. That makes perfect sense, and matches
what I've seen my lassies do when they ride through things on their
Clementines. I couldn't tell how much was long chain stays and how much was
they are still wee compared to the frame. Some of both I suspect. Not
having the ability to pop the front wheel over rocks and roots with
relative ease (even with a small front load) would drive me nuts
(admittedly a trip I could crawl rather than drive. Sardonic grin.).

[RBW] Any benefits to the longer CS's?

Off road I feel they are a detriment especially when riding single track.
Getting a manual or wheelie happening (a skill used to pop over logs, ext.) is
not very easy with a long chain stay bike.

But extra cargo capacity and probably stability are pros, I suppose. They will
probably help with a touring bike.

event, which for me is good. If I am just thinking about my ride and where I am
going and not about my ass; that's sort of the test really.
The shape is different than the B17, maybe it's a bit narrower, but I think the
actual part you contact, the "contact patch" is about the same.
I also have a C19, but I've only just gotten it and have not mounted it up on
anything yet.
My only major concern going forward is how long they last, it's sort of an
unknown value, but will ultimately determine if they are worthwhile or not.

[RBW] Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-13 Thread David Banzer
It's really comfy, noticeably so.
Increased clearance for panniers. Not a minor detail at all - Clem is first
bike I've been able to ride without clearance for rear panniers.
Can fit big tires without crazy chainstay denting and curving.
Playing on that, can fit regular road cranks with large tires - I'm running
Dura Ace 7410 cranks with intended 103mm bb, single 42t ring in inner position.

2016-06-13 Thread masmojo
I agree, stays need to be made stronger as well, which kind of flys in the
face of arguments against disk brakes. Makes frame more flexy.
Only two real advantages and they are minor, first increased heal clearance
for rear panniers/ cargo and a minor increase in stability.
That said there equally little benefit to making them super short, which is
popular in some circles.

Re: [RBW] Re: Raw Cotton Handlebar Tape Experiment

In my case of course, I am not bar testing, just waiting for the rest of
the tape to come off/disintegrate before spending all that time and money
on redoing the bars...
In terms of slippery, for the shorter rides I generally do these days, no
slippage at all. And they don't seem to get very dirty. It does leave your
bars more vulnerable to scratches, I suppose.

Re: [RBW] Re: Raw Cotton Handlebar Tape Experiment

My wife wanted me to run my noodles without tape because they look so good. But
i use greengrips cotton bartape with twine and heavy shellac.

At first i rode without but padding seems to make a big diff for me. Plus i
like to color match to my frame.

Nitto bars are so pretty it makes you want to run them bare, though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-06-13 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I've raved about the Cambium C17 and C17 carved a few times, I'm pretty
sure on this list, though possibly on iBob, or both. Recap:

* With my favorite handlebar and positioning (Noodle, approx. at saddle
height), B17 saddles were always slightly too wide for me, I settled on
B17n (narrow) saddles for years.
* The C17 is great - being slightly narrower than the B17 makes it work on
my noodle-equipped bikes, and also on my more upright bikes, though I can
ride a B17 in a more upright position
* The C17 carved is now my favorite saddle. So much so I used the cutout as
a pattern to make an old B17n into a carved model. The shape, width and
cutout really make this saddle disappear under me.

I happen to have a surplus C17 natural at the moment. I'd be willing to put
it out to the community for testing and passing around if you think you can
make it work. I don't want to admin anything, but if there are a few of you
all interested, I'd be happy to send it out to one of you first, and then
you all have to agree to pass it on down the line. If one of you falls in
love with it and wants to keep it, I'd be happy to make a favorable deal to
make it yours. If it hits the end of the line at some point, I can work on
getting it back. Let me know if any of you want to try a C17 for the cost
of shipping.

Ryan,
Thanks for your input .I understand why you feel about your Sam. I love my
58cm Sam too.
I'm on the fence for a Cheviot. I'm sure with longer wheel base and chain

comfortable.

[RBW] New bike day! Apppaloosa!

2016-06-13 Thread Michael Morrissey

I finally got my Appaloosa together! I'm really enjoying this bike! The
main thing I love about it is the lower bottom bracket height. It's so
stable and comfy. I built it up with a mish-mash of parts: some new, some
from my cyclocross bike, some from the ebay, some from the shelves at the
LBS! I'm running 35mm tires now because that's what I have, but I'm going
to go fatter soon! After wanting a Rivendell for 10 years, I am thrilled
to have one!

Parts list:
Paul neo-retro brakes and paul levers
Sugino x White Industries cranks
VP Vice pedals
Wolf Tooth 94bcd x 32 tooth narrow wide chainring (really low gearing!)
Sunrace 9 speed thumbshifter
Nitto dirt drop stem with albatross bars

[RBW] Re: Curious: Betty Foy vs. Cheviot

2016-06-13 Thread Ryan Thompson
Jon,

My current Sam, 56cm, is set up with albastache bars and serves as my
almost daily commuter so it's racked and is running the same drivetrain
plus tires (soma c-lines) as the Chev. By comparing my commute
times (about 12 miles one-way) the Sam is consistently faster and feels
more nimble. The difference could be mostly attributed to the more
aggressive position so it may not be the best side by side comparison. It
is my favorite ride of the three Rivs I own. I'm hoping to acquire a
Atlantis or Hunqapillar in the new future and I'm not sure about the longer
chain stays of future models

Remaining items:
Direct email is daban...@gmail.com

1. SP SV-8 Dynamo Hub - new, never laced, 36h - $110

2. Son Edelux I Dynamo Light - original upright version, polished silver,
no fork mount, 54cm wire length, bare cable ends, I used it with Shimano/SP
type connection - $80

4. Sugino Cranks - I believe these are Alpinas, 110 double (no inner 74bcd
drillings), more traditional 5-bolt design, meaning no hidden 5th bolt,
172.5mm, no chainings - though I can add Willow rings at a reasonable price
($10 a chainring), crank is new - $70

5. Shimano Triple Cranks - Exage, FC-M520, silver-ish painted finish, I
have a few of these, 110/74, 170mm or 175mm, black chainring bolts, no
chainrings but I can include Willow rings at a reasonable price ($10 a
chainring) - $25

6. Velo Orange Grand Cru Cantilever Brakes - MK2 version, MAFAC type
design, includes straddle cables and generic silver hangers, comes with
new Koolstop Salmon pads, this is a whole bike's worth - $40

8. Nitto Technomic Deluxe Quill Stem - 190mm overall height version, Pearl
quality, 12cm, 25.4mm clamp - $50

9. Velo Orange Threadless Stem - polished silver, 9cm, 26.0mm clamp,
earlier octagonal version - $18

10. Nitto CT80 Chromoly Threadless Stem - for 1-1/8" steerers,
fillet-brazed chromoly, and chrome finished, beautiful stem, 11cm, 25.4mm
clamp - $70

11. Continental Speed King Tires - 29 x 2.2 - pair - lightly used,
lightweight, smooth rolling tire, technically a mtb tire, but works great
for pavement - $75

12. Vee Rubber V12 Tires - 29 x 1.95, lightly used, folding bead, about
47mm wide on Dyads - $45

Also will have a single-speed/fixed-gear wheelset available soon. 700c,
CR18 rims, Formula/IRO low flange rear hub (36h), Suntour XC front hub
(32h). $100 plus shipping - I'm waiting on hubs to build up a new wheelset
first though, so probably a couple weeks before I could ship them. Local
pickup in Chicago highly encouraged on these.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-06-13 Thread Michael Morrissey
I have a C17 on my Appaloosa and it really does not agree with me. I
bought the Cambium because I thought it would be more durable in the snow
and rain. As it turns out, the cotton outer layer absorbs water, whereas
with a leather saddle you can just wipe it off in one second (or keep it
covered). I have a vintage B67 that I brought back to life with proofide
and a B17 select on other bikes. The B17 select is the comfiest of the
lot. I'm going to buy another Brooks soon because I broke the nose of the
B67 (after 5+ years of daily, very hard use and abuse), and I think I'm
going to go with one with the springs.

I don't mean to trash the product, but I found almost nothing in common
between the B17 and C17 other than the name brand.

[RBW] Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-06-13 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I love the B17 and the Brooks Pro but the C17 was too rounded on the top back
of the saddle to be comfortable for me. I put it on a Surly Krampus but took
it off and have it sitting unused. I also, own a Berthound Mente in natural
which I really like. The leather is nice and thick but the saddle has broken in
nicely for me. I own more Brooks saddles than I currently can use. I bought a
number of older B17s and Pros on eBay that were in excellent condition. The
leather on the older saddles tend to be thicker. Should I purchase a new
Brooks it would definitely be the B17 Select.

Not that I need it but the Rivet Imogene looks really appealing. My only
concern with that is that the back of the saddle seems to be rounded much like
the Cambium

Still pretty comfortable. Also nice not having to worry about riding in the
rain. I went back to my all time favorite Brooks Swift though.

Re: [RBW] Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-06-13 Thread René Sterental
I love mine. They're all doing well. Yes, the rails are longer, not sure
compared to the Ti B17.

I'm going to try a B17 Select on my custom when it arrives, but so far, the
C17 is my favorite saddle.

No I haven't. I love B17's - including my Select version - and was wondering
how close the vegan version comes to it. If it duplicates the comfort of a
classic Brooks in a lighter, waterproof saddle, I'm interested.

Have you tried Rivet? I know I felt daunted in my saddle quest until I
tried them. Deb offers a 1 year guarantee. Also, folks here have loved the
Brooks Select (or whatever the organic, extra thick hide is) and the
Berthod saddles, where were next on my list if Rivet didn't work out.

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto, Sugino, Shimano, Tektro, etc.

2016-06-13 Thread kielsun
Here's an update on what's still available. I have a couple offers on the
DD, but am hoping for some more trade offers, as well. See above for what
I'm in search of. Already acquired Nitto shim. Thanks!

Rivstuffs:

   - Nitto Dirt Drop Stem--$45/shipped: Unsure of size (see picture), a few
   scuffs, solid condition overall.
   - Nitto Moustache Bar (pictured)--$25 *plus* actual shipping: CroMo.
This was on my Sam for years. Some scrapes visible at clamp area.
   - Nitto Moustache Bar (*not* pictured)--$10 *plus* actual shipping:
CroMo. I inherited this years back. Plenty of scrapes to cover with bar
   tape. Works fine!
   - Shimano Tiagra Road Levers--$25 shipped: Fine used shape.

Non-Rivstuffs:

   - Tektro CR720 Canti Brakes--$40 shipped: These are *black*. Rear are
new, front installed and used briefly. Would prefer straight-up trade for
   v-brakes.
   - Sugino RD2 Double Crankset 53/39--$60 shipped or would prefer to trade
for a mountain double: Some wear. Arms are mostly free of scratches.
   - Ritchey WCS threadless stem--?$?: I have no idea what this thing is
worth. Maybe you do? Make me an offer.

HI Cecily,
The Soma Sutro has a quill length (i.e., "height") of 180mm; compared to
the Tallux's 225mm.

(Interesting that Riv notes height of Nitto Dirt Drop w/10cm extension is
178mm.)

Good luck!
