Random thought: I wonder if thinning the outer rubber on a

Hear me out...

As we can all tell by looking at used tires, the rubber part
doesn't provide much resistance to pictures or cuts. I believe
it is the casing that provides most of the flat resistance.
And while you'll sometimes have something punch all the way
through in one go, most of my flats seem to come from
something getting embedded in the rubber and then pushed in
further and further with every rotation of the tire. That's
the whole theory behind tire wipers.

I wonder if less rubber might hold debris less firmly, and the
puncture-causers might be more likely to fall off as you ride.
Perhaps resulting in fewer flats?

Well, if that were true then brand new tires would get flats a
lot, and as they wore the flats would become less frequent, until
at last when the tire was completely bald and the casing showing
through, they would get no flats at all. But in real life, it
happens in exactly the reverse order.

Interesting! I can't say I've observed that. To me, riding in a city
with lots of street debris, flats have generally seemed random. I
haven't noticed any correlation along with my tires being newer or
older. But I haven't been meticulous in my data collection either.
It's just the impression I'm left with.

Most people that I know riding in "ordinary terrain" use a sharp
increase in flat frequency as a telling sign indicating (as the Fisk
Tire Co. used to say) it's time to re-tire.

For each of you a Legolas like custom would be perfect. I thought Grant stated

Myself being vertically blessed, but height and weight restricted on bikes-

Maybe even park at the gate on Bo-Fax road.
The ride across Alpine Dam with no cars for miles in either direction is

Random thought: I wonder if thinning the outer rubber on a tire could,
under some circumstances, lead to less flatting? Hear me out...

As we can all tell by looking at used tires, the rubber part doesn't
provide much resistance to pictures or cuts. I believe it is the
casing that provides most of the flat resistance. And while you'll
sometimes have something punch all the way through in one go, most of
my flats seem to come from something getting embedded in the rubber
and then pushed in further and further with every rotation of the
tire. That's the whole theory behind tire wipers.

I wonder if less rubber might hold debris less firmly, and the
puncture-causers might be more likely to fall off as you ride. Perhaps
resulting in fewer flats?

Well, if that were true then brand new tires would get flats a lot, and
as they wore the flats would become less frequent, until at last when
the tire was completely bald and the casing showing through, they would
get no flats at all. But in real life, it happens in exactly the
reverse order.

Those photos are very nice!

Can you share your route? I'm thinking that at some point in mid august,
I'd like to try to go for a day ride to check the place out. I'm wondering
if you'd recommend parking in Fairfax and doing the loop from there just to
avoid all the climbing at the end of the ride. If mid-august is too hot,
then I'll do it in early September or in October.

I'm definitely interested in exploring the area.

I have yet to have difficulty getting through anywhere on singletrack
because of my panniers, and I've never understood the "problem" except as
one created by frame back marketers. The reality is my legs and feet are
wider and lower than my rear bags, so if my front frame and carcass make it

Front, duh.

I've come to appreciate the challenge of riding narrow brushy/snowy single

Plus the extra weight pretty much assures you keeping the front wheel

[RBW] FS: 61 cm AHH (2014)

2016-06-29 Thread Bob Cook
For a number of reasons it is time to part with my 61 cm A. Homer Hilsen,
delivery of which I took from RBW July 1, 2014.

I would like to avoid packing and shipping, so for the time being, local
pick-up or delivery only. "Local" here meaning within 6 hours of eastern
Iowa. "Delivery" here meaning I will be happy to meet a buyer halfway.
Delivery to western or southern Michigan might be possible too, depending
on schedules. Let's talk.

*Highlights*
61 cm AHH frameset, Waterford built (though two bottle mounts); excellent
condition, no dings or scratches
Rich-built Velocity Dyad rims, White Industries MI5 36h rear, SON28 36h
front, SKS P50 Longboard fenders, Compass Barlow Pass tires (ca. 100 mi)
Phil Wood BB
XT derailleurs, Silver downtube shifters, 11–32 8 sp cassette, Sugino
46/36/24 crankset
Paul Racer brakes, Dia Compe Gran Compe 202 non-aero levers
Mark's Rack, double-strutted, Schmidt EDelux upside-down
VO Chris's Rando bar + Tallux 8 cm
Brooks B17 Special saddle

Recent
pictures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/125863173@N06/albums/72157669740716511

I am happy to include the Berthoud Alex Singer bag, the Topeak frame pump,
the original Marathon Supreme 40 mm tires, and one or both of the other
bar/stem combos this bike has seen: Noodle 46 cm + Tallux 9 cm; Grand Bois
Randonneur + Tallux 9 cm (25.4 mm).

The original bike, less labor, shipping, and a couple minor items I'm
keeping, cost $5300. Reasonable offers entertained. (Original Sean Hipkin
box art included, too, if you like.) Please message me privately. Thanks.

Barlow Pass on my 700C Atlantis. They're dreamy. And Compass has released
some teaser shots of a new 44mm 700C tire coming out soon, which is also

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire wear question. When to replace?

2016-06-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I can't directly answer your question, but in my own personal experience of
riding around Albuquerque over the last 25+ years, I've found that very
light tires are not always prone to more flats -- this in an area where
99/100 flats are from goatheads, and not glass, nails, or other debris. For
example, Conti Grand Prix/GP 4000s (65C X 23), and 650C X 23 Michelin Pro
Race 4s, and 559 X 23 Specialized Turbos got no more flats than 559 X 1.25
non T Paselas and, in fact, not many more than 559 X 1.35 Kojaks, taking
mileage into account.

Also IME, flats fall into 2 kinds: those like goathead flats, where the
tire picks up a thorn which is either flung off before it fully penetrates,
or else which acts as a sort of partial plug, so that the leak is very
gradual -- I did not discover most of my flats until the next day. The
second type (only 1% or so) is from nails or staples; these go right
through the tread and casing and the deflation is very rapid.

After riding many miles and years both with and without tire savers, I have
to admit that I can't really point to any great advantage for using them.
OTOH, someone I knew here in ABQ, who once told me, "9,000 miles last year;
it was a bad year," swore by them. Meanwhile, I'm holding on to my stash,
even though modern sealants make all of this largely academic.

Great to read the ride reports from the other groups. We split into an

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire wear question. When to replace?

2016-06-29 Thread Reed Kennedy
Great info, thanks! I've long had theories about how this might go, but
it's great to have images with solid information!

Random thought: I wonder if thinning the outer rubber on a tire could,
under some circumstances, lead to less flatting? Hear me out...

As we can all tell by looking at used tires, the rubber part doesn't
provide much resistance to pictures or cuts. I believe it is the casing
that provides most of the flat resistance. And while you'll sometimes have
something punch all the way through in one go, most of my flats seem to
come from something getting embedded in the rubber and then pushed in
further and further with every rotation of the tire. That's the whole
theory behind tire wipers.

I wonder if less rubber might hold debris less firmly, and the
puncture-causers might be more likely to fall off as you ride. Perhaps
resulting in fewer flats?

[RBW] Re: 700c Tire Advice

2016-06-29 Thread Ryan Fleming
I have the 700 X 35mm Pasela Tourguards on my PX-10 and in 4 or 5 years
of commuting and 1 '1/2 - 2 hr rides (not in winter and not in rain, if I
can help it since there is NO room for fenders and very tight clearance ,
esp the rear tire ) I think I've only had 2 or 3 flats that I can
remember. Dumb luck, I know, but my experience with Pasela tourguards
(used 26 X 1.5 on my allrounder and X0-1) has been really quite good in
terms of durability and flat history.

Using Compass 26 X 1.5 McClure's on X0-1 and allrounder ; for the X0-1 , I
like them a lot but they are probably more susceptible to flats. Suppler
tires, that's for sure.

And I have 700 X 32 Stampede Pass extralights on my Riv road and I have to
say, they're nicer riding and certainly lighter than the 700 X 32 Pasela
Tourguards they replaced. Naturally, I don't commute on the Rivs, but a lot
of you are of the opinion that Schwalbes are very tough and well-made and
more reliable for regular every day commuting.

My personal feeling when it comes to tires is that you likely get what you
pay for, to some extent...it may not be the best place to economize, since
they do very much influence how the bike rides.

I'm building up for a week-long camping trip and thought I'd check if there
was one of these here before buying a new one. I could offer $175 (shipped)
but am flexible on that number.

If anyone has one sitting around and not in use, please reply off-list.

[RBW] Dirt Touring with Nitto Campee Lowriders - Front or back?

2016-06-29 Thread Esteban
I'm building up my Hunqua and planning some bike camping that will involve
as much dirt as possible. I have a front and rear Nitto Campee lowrider
rack - can anyone chime in from experience about impressions with either?
I've used both, but not on dirt and not on a Hunqua or Fatlantis...

This is under-bikepacking, hobo-style camping, so no framebags for me on
this rig. I do pack rather light, though - two panniers and a rando bag
does the trick.

Jeff, check out gambrill state park, Cunningham falls state park, little
Bennett's hike in camp spot and greenbrier state park. They're all sorta
close and it would be easy to map something out that includes them. Check
out Michaux for legal back country camping.
