$51 for Extra Leger Lierres, $37 for regular ones, per current

The quest for cheep and "good enough" often costs more than "spectacular."
Why? Spectacular is accomplished by so few, there are 1-4 in any given

[RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-17 Thread Lungimsam
It is sad that they are closing. Maybe it is the economy-to-price-of-goods
ratio these days. I don't know.

I think it is difficult to sell bikes/parts in the USA these days. If you
have read the Rivendell readers, you know of RBW's struggles through the
years.

Quality cycling gear is a very expensive now *in the USA*. I don't know if
it is the economy or what.
I'm not talking Target/WalMart/Sears. I am talking *LBS and up*.
*Go into any LBS*. How many people *in the USA* can afford to shell out
900$ for an entry level road bike these days? 40$ gloves? A 65$ helmet? $80
shoes?

It is too bad that these great bikes (LBS, RBW, Boulder, Weigle,
Litespeed, etc.) aren't financially accessible to everyone.
*Maybe it is not so much the helmets keeping people from cycling, but the
prices the market bears these days.*

CIA factbook today says that "per capita GDP of $54,800" in USA. How many
want to/are able to buy a 1000$ US bike and the parts? How many can you
sell in this economy?

Sometimes I think the US cycling industry is going to implode on itself if
the prices get much higher.

[RBW] Re: Line of Sight movie has atrocious cyclists. What is going on?

2016-07-17 Thread Wayne Naha
Thank you for brining this movie to my attention. It was a delight to
watch. Was I ever that young, dumb, and full of such reckless energy? A
*little* disappointed not to see a Clem being ridden, but so it goes. I
can see this movie being used as evidence at a Senate committee hearing to
outlaw these dangerous bicycles and keep our streets safe. But one only
has to look at how many pedestrians are injured or killed by bicyclists as
opposed to cars, the number of bicyclists killed by cars to see where the
real threat is coming from. But yeah, these guys are not helping, and many
times are saved from a crash by the good reaction times of others. It does
seem selfish and self-centered to me, to be riding around the streets like
like that, with very little regard for the safety and well-being of the
other users. But they are young and dumb. There's plenty of kids who have
wrapped cars around telephone poles and smeared themselves across the
pavement on motorcycles. This is doubtless a much safer adrenaline rush
than an overpowered car or motorcycle.

I just responded to a similar question on the 650b group:

1. Schwalbe Kojak. In 650b/27.5 size, it comes in 1.35" width. And these
tires measure ~ 34mm on Synergy rims.

2. Soma B-line. I have never seen these measure more than 37mm, even on the
wide-ish Pacenti SL23 rims.

3. as a replacement for Loup Loup, you can also add the new Pari Moto. They
have become more robust than the first-gen event tires, and they are pretty
modestly priced (you can get on for $35 per tire from Boulder, Universal
Cycles or eBay).

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Bubbe #3

2016-07-17 Thread James Warren
Wasn't the plan going to be that they are not going to be a homogenous batch of
frames, because they are making them for a semi-hodgepodge of pre-existing
forks?

[RBW] Re: Rosco Bubbe #3

2016-07-17 Thread Joe Bernard
I believe the blue one I saw Grant riding has a Hunqa fork; #3 is smaller and
uses a Sam fork (road brakes). Other than size and brakes, they look like the
same design to me.

Looking back at photos of the first prototype, it's a different bike than
what materialized - the prototype had a much taller front end and used a
cantilever-brake fork.
