2016-07-18 Thread 'frank_a' via RBW Owners Bunch
I dialed things in a bit...I changed the saddle to a B-68 and the cranks from
170 to 175. The longer crank seems to work better for this set-up. While there
is no frame pump peg it's not a problem. The Topeak Master Blaster 54-59 pump
fits perfectly between the tubes and doesn't budge.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the other RB's turn out.

[RBW] FS/T: Magnic Light; Nitto 34F Big front rack for Nitto R-14 top rack plus cash

2016-07-18 Thread franklyn
Hi, Everyone,

I have one of these Nitto Big Front Rack
.
I had it for a while and it was sitting in my garage. Today I tried it put
it on my Kogswell and realized that the rack mounts on hourglass braze-ons
above the mid-fork braze-on's which the Kogswell doesn't have. While
P-clamp could be a solution, it's not one that appeals to me. The only bike
in my fleet that has these hourglass braze-ons is my Rawland, which sports
a semi-porteur rack from Haulin Colin, and I have a Tubus low-rider rack to
add pannier carrying capacity if the occasion demands panniers.

So I am letting this one go. I would prefer to trade it for a Nitto R-14
top-rack plus some cash. I can also sell it straight-up ($115 plus
shipping, which should be less than $20 in CONUS), but I prefer the trade.

I also have a set of first generation magnic light
. These were from the initial
kickstarter and does not come with standlight and are dimmer than the
second generation ones. But they do work once you set them up properly. I
am fairly settled with dynamo hubs/light and these become superfluous. $75
shipped for the pair, including two of these mounting adapters

.

Contact me offlist if you are interested,
Franklyn

Given that Bilenky asks for an additional $7,000 over their fillet brazed

built lugged tandems, which required fillet brazing a frame and then
cutting it up to make lugs, since nobody makes a lug set for a tandem.

that cost us all in ways we may not realize (and ofter are a non-issue

absolutely notice a difference between supple wall tires without protection
and beefier tires. I lose significantly more brain energy to the noticeably
more jarring rides of the Clement MSO's (Quickbeam) and Smart Sams
(Hunqapillar) vs the far more supple and smooth ride (on the same jouncy
trail the same day, same conditions) with the Compass Barlow Pass

benefit of supple tires was well worth it for me.

Is that ride delta significant enough to justify the cost delta? That
depends on your calibration to jarring and the costs you pay for it.

[RBW] Re: Less expensive 650b alternatives to Compass/GB tires?

2016-07-18 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I picked up 2 sets of the parimotos for less than the price of a single set of
EL compass/GB last year... Still going strong on that first pair of parimotos
but I think about what I am missing from the EL's every ride! :)

Am I actually missing something or just have it stuck in my head...? Probably
more the latter.

I have EL 32's on my Bob Jackson and EL 48's on my Bombadil, both are totally
worth it.

I think for me the potential for tire envy outweighs the high prices of Compass
tires, at least this morning.

[RBW] Re: Escape to Rampart Reservoir

2016-07-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
Mule deer. They shed their antlers annually and regrow in the
spring/summer, the velvet providing the blood supply, which gives their
antlers the rounder, softer look of caribou till it sluffs off in a mangy,
bloody mess before rutting season. Though, come to think of it, they could
be caribou on the lamb from the local tourist attraction The North Pole,
off the Pikes Peak highway. That would explain their dodgieness, desire for
food on the move, avoiding major roads, and working their way North. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-18 Thread Nick Huemmer
Yeah - how does buying a bike and associated bits compare with buying other
consumer goods?I don't mind paying a premium for bike parts (and boy,
have I!) and equipment (within reason) but I always wonder if consumers are
turned away from buying bikes because they see them as so expensive and the
bikes they are willing to pay for are shoddy. Then, many are willing to
finance buying a car they can't really afford. We live in a strange place.

One other observation I've made is that Surlys seem to get more and more
expensive while having seemingly lower component specs ("entry level"
components, I hate the term). A brand new Cross Check or similar from an
LBS is *expensive*.

Personally, I feel like BBH was a great store but ahead of its time and in
the wrong location. Foot traffic in WC especially around that mall seem
more interested in shopping the Apple Store and Vineyard Vines, but not
interested in pine tar (awesome), wool (indispensable) and hatchets (fun
and useful).

The blackwall wirebead paselas Riv sells were surprisingly excellent for

2016-07-18 Thread Ron Mc
I ride about 4000 mi/year. My oldest and most frequent riding buddy
probably a bit more than half that. I only ride soft tires. He mostly
rides city/tough tires.
I average less than one flat/year. He seems to average about two/year.
Maybe the difference is I pay more attention to where I put my tire.

And yet Steve, many people do ride "armored" tires and even add flat
strips and all kinds of stuff and it does not deter their enjoyment .

While nice clinchers are nice, tubular wheels and tires are still even
better. I used to ride tubulars for a while , surely really nice, but no
part or bike is the end all all-that. They were wonderful but not so
transforming that I HAD to ride them absolutely. Regardless of the
circumstances and details, after a while you still forget about them and
all your precious "individual details and parts" and the whole experience
of just being where you are is all there is.

[RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-18 Thread ascpgh
Grant has always held that cycling has a place for everyone, Walnut Creek
may have gotten a bit too upmarket and urban with itself to permit that. I
can remember objectifying a few of the top model mountain bikes in the
earliest days, rare among what was already pretty rare as LBSs were slow to
get into them. I knew from word of mouth, reading and a few chances to see
and try one in the wild, that they were better than the average OEM bike.
$1000 was the pie in the sky price those days, which is a joke now. Top
floor planned models in the proximate Trek-a-lized showroom retail for more
than my first new motor vehicle. Inflation does not account for that
catapulting of prices.

The average person needing transportation, practical to their situation,
really makes bicycling daunting and unapproachable in the US. I remember
Kona and their Africa bikes that targeted these needs of people completely
elsewhere. Seems like we need a similar product here to remove the class
barrier. A continual differentiation of cycling and cycling sport between
the US and the world. That audience doesn't respond to advertising,
frequent retail yet alone buy new.

Re: [RBW] Less expensive 650b alternatives to Compass/GB tires?

2016-07-18 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Jim, all I've ordered from Grand Bois are the Binda repro toe straps -
they are the highest quality. I can't tell you what the shipping will be
for tires, but they will use Express mail. The most I've ever spent on
shipping from Japan was $35, and that was a custom fly rod in a trapezoidal
box to make it just under 5' long (and meet shipping requirements). You
place an order without knowing the shipping cost. They send you a
confirmation e-mail, and a second e-mail with a paypal invoice including
shipping. So if you like it, you pay it. I assume it cancels if you
don't.

[RBW] Re: Less expensive 650b alternatives to Compass/GB tires?

2016-07-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
I love the Compass tires on my Ram and on the tandem, but I have also
gotten many happy miles from three different pairs of Pari-Motos. What we
want from a tire depends lot on the kind of riding we do. I live in a
rural area and mostly ride country roads and extensive bike trails so flats
are not a major concern. When I commuted into Burlington every day I
wanted a carefree tire and rolling resistance was at best a secondary
concern. My Saluki is happy with Fatty Bumpkins and I always ride them
when I'm going into town or other bad roads. They don't have the snap of
the Compass tires but otherwise roll along just fine.

I don't think tires our a good place to economize; they have too much
impact on both safety and enjoyment. I would recommend that a rider think
about what kind of riding he mostly does and what he wants from the tire
and then get the best he can afford. To paraphrase Bontrager. You can get
great performance, great resilience, great price. Choose any two.
