[RBW] Minneapolis Riv dealer

2016-07-25 Thread Sean Kline
Hi all: I understand that Hiawatha Cyclery in Minneapolis closed. Does
anyone know if there's a Riv dealer in the Twin Cities now?

I'm debating flying with my Riv or seeking a rental when I arrive. Last
visit I rode Nice Ride bike share, which was cool but not great for longer
distances. Any recommendations on bike rental?

Thanks,
Sean

[RBW] Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-25 Thread Don Compton
I bought a Roadeo the first year they were available and it's been my main
and recently only bike. I have always enjoyed Grant's bikes, but I am a
roady. I use really skinny 700x28 Grand Bois tires pumped up 65f and 75r.
Seriosly, for most club riders, the Roadeo is probably the best bike they
could ever ride, especially on the fast, curvy downhills in the Berkeley
hills.

Well said, Grant. Something to remember anytime we get too deep into
pulling apart the spec of a new bike.

I, for one, am intrigued by the description of the Roadini, but honestly, I
already have a "Clemmish road bike" in my recently stripped down and
drop-barred Long Haul Trucker. Still, can't wait to see it.

[RBW] Intro.....my humble roots, with some Riv content

2016-07-25 Thread RichS
Linda:

Welcome and thank you for such a delightful intro. Your Fleetwing is a sweet
looking mixte. I admire the passion you have for it and the commitment you've
made to keep it rolling.

Be warned though. One Riv can lead to another! Hope you enjoy your Clem as much
as the Fleetwing!

This is a very sad tragedy.
Unfortunately it's become an epidemic across the country. Not only for
cyclists but pedestrians, and other drivers.
Often the drunk driver has 2-10 previous D.U.I.s.
Why are these people still behind the wheel?
You can help call or write your elected officials and tell them the
penalties for drunk driving are too soft .

...and as a data point, I had the exact opposite experience. I missed the
straight, flat-ish sections on the Noodle bar. The Compass bars have no
flat area and my wrists were always at an angle when on the tops. I also
like to rest my palms on the hoods or hold on to them while climbing. I
found the drops on the Compass bars did not extend far enough back for me
and that they were also at an angle that was not super comfy for me. The
Compass bars were the 42cm size and my Noodles are the 46cm size. I missed
the leverage of the larger bars when climbing steep hills. I felt I had
more usable hand positions on the Noodle bar. I am 6'1" and 185lbs, ride
61cm Hilsen and use a 9cm Nitto Pearl stem with Cane Creek Aero levers.

Bars are a preference item and my dislike of the Compass bars had nothing
to do with the quality of the bars (beautiful) or Compass as a business
(excellent).Simply did not enjoy them.

One correction: the granny/grandpa chainring on the complete Ram was 26T, not
24T, as I just wrote.

Still, lowest geared road bike you could get stock.

There was a brief period where the Rambouillet (blue) was sold complete. I have
the brochure.

It replaced the Romulus/Redwood complete when Riv decided it was too much to
sell both Ram framesets AND Romulus/Redwood bikes.

This was a bit over ten years ago, I think. Riv made an announcement online
that the Ram was being discontinued, and they would just offer Romulus (and
maybe Redwood?) at it's great price, complete. The public outcry over this was
loud (within our subculture). Whether responding to the outcry or not, Riv
changed the plan and decided to end the bike named "Romulus" (and Redwood), and
instead created a complete Ram bike offering to go alongside the Ram frameset.
The parts on it were much like the Rom, maybe identical: 46-36-24 crank,
Shimano long reach Tiagra brakes, indexed 9-speed triple, Barend shifters.
Tires were 28, I believe. I think the price was a bit higher than Rom price
from before, but still a very good deal. (Ram frame's details made it a little
fancier than Rom, while functionally about the same.) The Ram bike was offered
in even sizes, including 64, 66, and 68 cm. The brochure is very nice, which is
why I saved it. The cover shows the bike being ridden as a road bike on a dirt
road. Idyllic. There is a parts list in the brochure.

A Riv classic! Ram (bike or frame) was sidelined a few years later partly by
the easy ability to do even bigger tires on a road bike, an ease which was
enhanced by brakes like the Silver, the Tektro 559, and some by Paul. The Ram
was not made for the reach of these exciting new brakes that Riv was focusing
on, and around '07-08, the AHH started to nudge it out of the lineup by virtue
of AHH's versatility through tire clearance. No, they are not the same frame,
but Riv could only offer so much, so they took things in the direction of
bigger tires and put the Ram to sleep. It woke up once very briefly (a last
small batch), and has been sleeping for 7 or 8 years since.

In Ram's absence, AHH and Hillborne clearly performed the duty of
versatile/efficient bike, but the other side of Ram's personality, that of
"road bike" was not in the Riv lineup for a couple of years. This was void was
filled starting in early 2010 or so with the Roadeo.

Yes, that is correct. My hands can rest on the ramp alone, further back on
the curve, or further forward on the hood. For full stretch, I can also
grab the hook in the hood with my fists placed vertically. And of course,
there is the flat rear upright position. So far I rarely ride on the drops,
but can do it for fast descents.

Here's a photo:

Noodles were my first bars, but I haven't tried them since. I didn't find
them that comfortable at the time, but can't say right now how they would
feel. It's just that I like the contours of the Randonneur a lot more. I'm
using the 42mm, so if anything, I'd have to try the 41 Noodles. The ones I
used (and still have for sale) are the 48.

Hi Michael,
For me, part of the magic of the English 3-speed is in the trigger
shifter! I like the simplicity of the 3-speed, and find the range
acceptable - though I did change to a bigger cog in the back to make it
more amenable to the hills we have around here as well as to the stop and
go of city riding. Also, Harris Cyclery
 offers the
wheels with the hub at a reasonable price. It was easy!

they are even more sensitive to bar height adjustment. Just raising mine 1/4"

feel as good on your bike as they do on your husband's.
Maybe you could do a short term swap!?

Nice update. I am glad to hear things are working for you. I too, had a
bear of a time getting those Compass Rando bars and Nitto shims installed

MKS Stream pedals are a nice option...no flip tab but there are teeth on
both sides of the pedal and they're narrow...they may be a little narrower
than Sylvans - about the width of high-grade MKS NJS models.Amazon has
them as does Harris Cyclery for under $30.00. Bearings tend to be on the
tight side...lube and adjustment may be required but otherwise they're very
nice pedals.

However, if you have wide feet...not so much of a good option

[RBW] Re: Roadini

2016-07-25 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Roadini will be more of a "Slim CLEM" road bike. We'll toe the line (as
I've said) btw useful braze-ons and "sending the wrong message about what
the bike is for" braze-ons—and the same for clearances/tire compatibility.
<---those will be Roadeo-like.

The Rambouillet and Romulus were lugged to the teeth, and that can't happen
with a lowISH cost bike. Lugs are so so much more expensive to buy and
build with, and yet we're not going to make a generic TIG bike, so we'll
have some expensive crafty stuff on it, too.

Putting together a bike (well, frame..) like this and trying to please all
is like ordering the same pizza for a table of twenty and nailing
perfection for every eater. Ultimately we're going to leave off the
pineapple to the dismay of some, and include gorgonzola and anchovies to
the delight of a few, and it could be the whole table is nonplussed!

But---I promise there will be a reason for everything there and missing,
and if you either already have a road bike and love it, or don't have one
but are curious, the Roadini will worth a look at. OK now--that's enough
"balls in the air" for now. We have too much going on. G

Hi John

What's the rough stand over height on the SimpleOne - I can't find a geometry
chart anywhere that includes stand over. Rusty trigonometry indicates about
91cm, but I could be well off.

Second and possibly more problematic question - would you be prepared to post
it internationally (for some extra money, of course).

Cheers

I second your assessment of the buttery smooth bearings.
They feel like premium racing pedals and look great on any era of bike.

One could always amputate the outer vanes of the flip tab with a hacksaw

[RBW] Jeff Archer, Owner of First Flight Bicycles

2016-07-25 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Not sure if you caught this news, but Jeff Archer was killed last Wednesday
while crossing a street in Mooresville, NC. He was hit by a drunk driver.

Some of you may know Jeff as the founder/curator of MOMBAT (Mountain Bike
Museum) and owner of First Flight Bicycles in Statesville, NC. He also
owned Mountain Goat cycles.
This is a big loss for the cycling community. I OFTEN refer to the MOMBAT
site for information.

He was a great guy, and the world will miss him.

I think the Roadini will be a huge hit. There's a really big market
for people that want a Rivendell at a lower price tag, especially a
road bike w/ drop bars. Big draw for new Rivendell customers hoping
for something at a lower price tag (though I'm sure there are bunch of

the birches. I have some great all-around/grocery-capable bikes, but the
quickbeam is definitely the best for riding in the woods and enjoying the
sounds of the birds, frogs, katydids, etc. Also great bike for riding back
from a long day on the trails.

[RBW] Re: Roadini

2016-07-25 Thread Joe Bernard
You're thinking of the Romulus and Redwood, which were complete, slightly
cheaper versions of the Ram. One cost-cutter was they were one color..no cream
fills on those frames. A Romulus was my first Riv, which I bought from a shop
in Danville, CA. The next QBP venture was the Bleriot, which was a cheaper
Saluki/Homer.
