2016-08-19 Thread 'clayton bailey' via RBW Owners Bunch
When tires are manufactured, the inside of the molds are sprayed with a
substance to make the rubber release after cooking them. Until that thin
coating wears off, the tires can be quite slippery. I learned this in the
motorcycle world, where it is VERY important to know your tires and what
affects their traction. Don't ask how I learned this important lesson.

Thanks all. I'm putting these on some fairly wide rims, so it seems like 1.75

Wow. No grip in wet conditions and short tread life are not things I've
hear about the RTP up till now. I have a pair, but only rode them briefly
before I took apart the bike they were on. I am in the process of building
a different bike and plan to use these tires. This will be mainly a
commuting machine (heard they were not bad regarding flats, but plan to run
them with tubes that have a squirt of Orange Seal just in case. In any
case, just about any bike I build these days has to be for commuting;^) but
obviously leery of a slippery when wet tire. Of course I expect any tire to
let go at some point while cornering in the rain, but usually it is the
cheaper tires with harder compounds. The fact that the guy directly behind
you wiped in the same spot makes me wonder--could there have been something
else on the road that day?

The Powerblocks come in at exactly 50mm on Araya RM 17 rims (1.97). Don't
know the specs on these rims but the R17s appear a bit on the narrow side
for 26" wheels. Might be a bit close for comfort if you only have 56mm

Re: [RBW] ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-19 Thread René Sterental
I had to go to a 126mm wide BB so the René Herse crankset could clear the
Atlantis chainstays. With the Sugino crankset I had before, the BB was a
110-113, I think. I forgot to measure it.

Regarding the rub you're getting, perhaps you need to tweak the
position/rotation of the FD slightly? I was having some issues on the Homer
when I did the Lake Tahoe ride, and at one of the stops, I asked one of the
mechanics to take a look at it. He rotated it slightly and the shifting
improved tremendously. It had originally been set by RBW and I hadn't
touched it. It is a triple Campagnolo FD, I can't remember the model now.
It's the one RBW used to sell.

I was able to adjust the SunXCD, which I also have on the Betty and on both
it shifts perfectly, even with the smooth RH rings. I compared it to the
CX70 and visually, the cages were virtually identical in length. I have a
spare one here, so I can post photos comparing both to see if anyone can
pick any differences. The CX70 is not completely silver, though...

The custom Rex will get the front and rear Sun XCD derailleur set as well,
I like it so much.

I have the standards on a hunqapillar and love them. I was sort of thinking
of selling my hunq due to too much overlap but after putting some RTP on
them it has breathed new life (into an already awesome bike, but one that
was setup w/ knobbies and used mostly for trail riding). I've used them in
all kinds of riding conditions and come to the conclusion I can keep them
on year round except for the rainy season in northern california. A little
slippery in rain as James pointed out. Not great with loose sand or mud
(which is a given since they're knobbies, but I still pushed its limits and
found out the hard way), otherwise great for road, fire roads, singletrack,
etc.

with even more pillowy float. I haven't tried them on trails or dirt yet.
Highly, highly recommended.

[RBW] Re: Wool Shirts/Jerseys

2016-08-19 Thread Hunter Ellis
So a mini-review:

I got a cheap ($35) 100% merino wool TShirt from Amazon from a place
called WoolX. I was skeptical but it was cheap so I figured I'd take the
risk. When I opened it, it felt a little scratchy, so I wrote them and
asked if it would soften up, but that I was afraid to wear it and wash it
because I might have to return it. Their customer service was great--they
said I could wear it and wash it and still return it if it wasn't
comfortable. I've worn it on 5 rides now and washed it once and its gotten
quite comfortable, though I get a little more "wet sheep" smell than I did
with an older, different Merino Tshirt.

The fit is good for cycling, but it is different than a standard tee. I
usually wear a medium (I'm a pretty tall, pretty slim guy), and this one is
very fitted. Good for biking, but if I was a little wider or if I wanted a
more casual look I'd get a large. The sleeves are pretty long--almost to
the elbows--but again, more sun coverage, which is good where I live.

All in all, an affordable piece of gear that works well and doesn't look
"bikey", which I like. Now if only it had some pockets in the back ;-)

plenty of mileage left on them.

Back in the day, they didn't have a total rider limit and they allowed
pacelines. After several years with a number of bad crashes, they
decided to cut back on the number of riders and actively discourage
pacelines. Bike VA bans pacelines for the same reason. Pacelines may
be just dandy for a relatively small group of experienced, practiced
people who know each other and have trained together, but with a large
mix of total strangers of varying skill levels, pacelines can become
very dangerous indeed.

[RBW] Re: ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-19 Thread Michael Hechmer
RBW sells the Shimano CX70, which was designed for cyclocross dbls. Has
anyone tried it on a triple? On my single bikes I find any derailler with
a not too long cage works pretty well. but the tandem seems to be much
more demanding. No doubt some of that comes from coordination between
shifting and relaxing pedal pressure, and some of it comes from the extra
long cables, but I suspect a third factor but haven't identified it.

When we got the tandem we initially had very poor front end shifting. I
replaced the recycled rings with new TA's, reduced the range in both front
and back, went from an XTR to an Ultegra RD. Everything worked great for 4
or 5 years, then this year I broke the Campy SR FD and replaced it with an
IRD. Now I am struggling to get it working consistently. I am not alone
in this. We do a couple of tandem rallies each year and I have noticed
that a preponderance of mechanical problems involve front end shifting.

[RBW] Racin' Dragonflies!

2016-08-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
You know it’s August round here when the dragonflies line up to drag race each
other, let me crash the party, and spot me a moving head start. I still lost.
Grin.

In the first two photos is one of the ranches I pass nearly daily as it’s on
the 5 mile jaunt to Woodland Park, from whence nearly all longer rides branch
out.

It’s been amusing to watch the civil engineers and construction crews wage war
against mother nature and her weapons of rain, decomposed granite, and gravity.
You can see their latest attempt with the layers berms that are now mostly
filled in after a few boomers. The ditch used to be six feet deep.

Blessedly cool day in the 60’s, headwinds up and they swapped directions while
I was tucked in the hills, so I had them down too. Thunderstorm season likes to
do that to me. Sardonic grin.

It is fun underbiking with the Quickbeam and Barlow Pass tires. Promotes
sitting off the back of the seat for better braking on the single track
descents.

Flowers are stunning and smell amazing. Bumble bees the size of 50 cent pieces
land on these delicate things and plunk them down to the ground, gather their
pollen, then fly off as the flower dances with delight.

All in all a grand way to while away three hours (45 min. of it lazing with a
pipe in a meadow) and make a wee grocery run. Grin.

pavement and I wrecked. I blame the mold release on the tires
combined with the pressure at 40 psi. After the crash, I took a
long ride in the dirt to scrub the mold release off and now run
the tires at 30 psi, which seems ideal. I have been a little
reluctant to corner real hard (still have the road rash) but I'll
head to a parking lot one of these days and see how far I can lean
them. I rack the wreck up to operator error.(I knew about mold
release on tires).

If I was to purchase again, I'd get the standard, not the ultralights.
The standards are really light.

Beware, once you are spoiled by the ride of these tires, it will be
hard to take them off.

I haven't had them long enough to report on wear, but due to my wreck,
I am thinking they might have a harder compound, and should last
longer than they appear they would.

The light sidewalls on the Compass ELs make you think they're "event
tires," but in fact they have a reasonably thick tread, the same
thickness as the standard tires. Unlike many "event tires" that for me
last only about 1,000 miles, the Compass X-pass in 32mm and 28mm last as
long as Grand Bois Cypres 32mm or Paselas.

I've done this ride many times. One time I was riding a bike with my
then-brand new Berthoud bag. A paceline of people with club jerseys
went by and as she passed me, one woman snarkily asked me if "I had my
little dog Toto" with me in the bag.

The following year, it rained in the morning. I was at the Goodwill
Store water stop and there she was, with a bunch of her mates, in those
same club jerseys. She was covered with road spatter, and I overheard
her telling her friends how she had a bit of a skid and barely caught
herself because of "mud on the road."

I walked up to her and told her that before it had gotten on the road,
the last place that "mud" had been was inside of a horse, and that
regardless of the spatter on her body and on her face, she would be all
right as long as she did not lick her lips.

If it rains up there, you /really/ want to be on a bike with fenders.

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks Bill. What I meant by the shifter not solving it was just to rule
out it not being fully in gear, due to operator error or, as you wrote, a
shifter that won't stay put.

I realize the stiff link is the easy check, but I've had those and it
doesn't seem like the symptoms match--usually that will yank the rear mech
around; this does not seem to be that. Will check tonight though. Can't
swap wheels, all my others are 126 or 130.

Here is my question rephrased: Can this kind of 6-pawl, strong rear hub,
which can push the chain forward when the bike is not being pedaled (I've
experienced this), causing the droop and chain slack Westchester Bill is
experiencing, be the root cause of this skipping, by having the now slack
chain suddenly be jerked forward as the cyclist resumes pedaling
(especially quick starts--seems to happen at those inconvenient times,
accelerating to make a turn, start a hill, resume after a light), maybe
making the first few links miss the engagement in the rear, as though it
were slightly derailed? It happens regardless of what gear it is in. Hope
that makes sense. I have never experienced the kind of drive issues I've
had here with any other rear wheel.

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
" My drive train is still giving me trouble, lately skipping under load or
even just after stopping pedaling and restarting--but not ghost shifting.
Adjusting the shifter does not solve the problem. It has increased lately,
and is becoming problematic enough that I took another bike in to work
today"

"Any thought on this Bill L?"

I always have thoughts on things. Thought 1 is that I have no clue how
adjusting the shifter would have done anything. What was your hypothesis,
and what exactly did you adjust, and how did you intend it to help? I
don't follow, at least to the extent that I understand the symptoms. You
have a friction shifter. A friction shifter has two jobs: move when you
move it, and stay put when you don't move it. The only adjustment you can
make is tighten the friction part if it is not staying put, or loosen the
friction part because you can't move it when you want to.

At any rate, I can't exactly tell where you have skipping. Is the chain
skipping on the front chainring? Is the chain skipping on the rear cog?
Is the cassette drive shell skipping internally? Whichever one it is will
have a short list of things to do. If you don't know for sure which it is,
then figuring out which it is would be your first job.

If it's really easy to reproduce your problem, but you aren't sure where
your problem is, then a few experiments can help divide and conquer. It
think your stiff link conjecture is the easiest one to do. You either have
a stiff link or you dont. Put the bike in the stand and pedal backwards
slowly, watching the chain run over the rear derailer pulleys. The chain
will either run smoothly, continuously or will clunk and thunk as the stiff
link rolls by.

After you've ruled that out, a very efficient experiment if you have parts
on hand is to ride the bike with a different rear wheel. If the problem
goes away with a different rear wheel, then you've ruled out anything being
fundamentally wrong with everything that isn't part of your rear wheel.

Once you've isolated it to your rear wheel, try to decide if your problem
happens in every gear, or only in a small number of gears. If you think
it's random, or if you think you can make it happen in any gear, then it's
the cassette body of the rear hub. Take it apart and look for obvious
damage or contamination. Or if you can't tell what you are looking at, put
it in a mechanic's hands at that point.

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
Jeremy is right. The root cause is your hub and a clutch derailer is a
workaround. Do whatever it takes to put your hub in front of a good
mechanic and decide what to do together. I offered a free clutch derailer
because you were going to throw $200 plus on a new rear wheel which seemed
like a waste. I'm nervous you overtightened something and did permanent
damage to your hub, but I don't know for sure because I don't have your
wheel in my hands. You've said you have a bent hub flange, and I still
don't know what that's about.

[RBW] RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-19 Thread Joe Bernard
It probably depends on the year. By 1993 Grant was setting them up with 128
rear spacing, which accommodated the 126 hub on the 7-speed and 130 on the 8.
The 7-speed with single-pivot sidepulls came with 28c tires.

Beware, once you are spoiled by the ride of these tires, it will be hard to

I haven't had them long enough to report on wear, but due to my wreck, I am

they appear they would.

Last but not least, they look really cool.

throw the fenders back on my Sam and make it work, but I'm not really

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread Jeremy Till
Don't let me get between you and shiny new parts, but this isn't a
derailleur issue, it's a hub issue. I've seen draggy freehubs cause
similar issues even on bikes with clutched derailleurs.

I've serviced a few hubs of this type, and if lubrication doesn't seem to
be helping, the seals are usually the "gotcha" for me. I'd check them
again, make sure they're in the right place (a schematic would be helpful
here, but I'm not sure they're available for this hub) and not getting
misaligned as you re-insert the freehub. Maybe even give them a little bit
of lubrication, or try running the hub without them to see if that
addresses the issue. Not that that's necessarily a long term solution, but
it would help in diagnosis.

Also, moderation is key when lubricating freehubs. Even if using a
relatively light lube, don't over do it.

[RBW] Re: 26x1.75-2" tire recommendations

2016-08-19 Thread Rod Holland
I ran Compass 26 x 1.75 tires on my Surly Trucker DeLuxe for 1400 miles,
until the Rat Traps became available. I liked them fine: cushy and quick,
game for the gamut of surfaces I rode them on, although for the really
rough stuff, I found myself wanting either wider tires or more skill (hence
the switch to Rat Traps). Think of them as Paselas with more supple
casings. Lots of laughs. Here's a ride report
, putting these tires
through their paces in the Vermont hills last year.

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Bill. Though it perhaps reads otherwise, I wasn't trying to suggest just
giving up and living with it! My drive train is still giving me trouble,
lately skipping under load or even just after stopping pedaling and
restarting--but not ghost shifting. Adjusting the shifter does not solve
the problem. It has increased lately, and is becoming problematic enough
that I took another bike in to work today and will take a look at things
tonight. Maybe there is a stiff link, but that doesn't strike me as the
answer. I wonder if the design of the hub makes it prone to this, or it
contributes in some way to this issue? If the chain goes slack for a moment
due to the pawls in the rear hub pushing it forward off the cog while the
crank is not being turned, I imagine that could cause a skip when
re-engaging, especially under pressure--this often manifests when starting
up, or after having coasted for a bit. Any thought on this Bill L? I have
never had a drive chain do this so consistently. The bike I road in this
morning is an old 7-speed freewheel with an old Campy shifter, works like a
charm.

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-19 Thread Rod Holland
I had an experience recently that may be relevant. As part of a hilly
30-mile loop in the Boston suburbs, intended as a training ride for a
gravel ramble in the Vermont hills later in the month, I came to a long
segment (maybe 2 miles?) of grooved pavement in a hilly stretch of Concord
Ave., Lexington. I was riding my Surly Trucker DeLuxe, a 26" touring bike
equipped with RTP ELs (affectionately known as the "Monster Trucker").
After riding to the top of the first of several hills, I plunged without
hesitation into what soon became an all-in descent; the tires made this
feel like the right thing to do, and that feeling increased through a 35
mph run, and was repeated in two more descents before the pavement reverted
to normal. The fact that I dropped a couple of roadies who were gingerly
negotiating that stretch on 23 mm tires was, of course, icing on the cake.
The fact that the tires were also doing their thing admirably on the smooth
pavement, as well, made it sensible for me to be out riding them on what
was basically an all-pavement ride in the first place. The Surly frame
(which I like well enough, btw, and have run happily with other tires) was
incidental: in this case, it was really about the tires, making possible
things that didn't feel wise before, in this case a 35 mph descent on
grooved pavement. The tires are the thing. Maybe someone will come up with
one or more optimal bicycles to match them, but in the meantime, they make
any bike that can fit them a whole lot better.

By way of data points, no flats in 600 miles, no traction problems in the
rain. I'm running the RTP ELs on Sun Rhyno Lite rims at 30/35 PSI. I've
taken them on pavement rough and smooth, city and country, gravel ranging
from stone dust to railroad ballast, dirt, roots, rocks, the last three on
single track and our local "abandoned carriage roads". I'm not running
tubeless. I find they spin up well from a standing start, and that the
pneumatic suspension rewards standing on the pedals in those situations,
good for when the light changes. They climb happily (they climb, the rider
is happy).

Re: [RBW] ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-19 Thread Tim Gavin
I've had good success with old-style double FDs in various installations.
I tend to use mid-'80s Suntour Cyclone FDs because they're easy to find and
cheap-to-free.

In my experience:
They work fine on a triple 48-38-26 (with friction thumb shifters).
They work fine on a Stronglight 99 triple 52-42-30 (with friction bar-ends).
They even work fine on my Roadeo on its 46-30 Velo Orange
cyclotouriste-clone (with 8-speed Campy Ergo brifters).

(The Stronglight and VO 46-30 both have low clearance between the big ring
and straight crankarm, in the low-Q French tradition, so the flat outer
plate is necessary to keep the FD from hitting the inside of the arm.)

As long as you are not using an indexed triple front shifter (like Shimano
triple brifters or MTB Rapidfire), flat-cage double FDs seem to work just
fine.

The sculpted cages of more modern triple FDs seem to be more vital for
those indexed triple setups. Jan Heine wrote about this in his "Trouble
with triples"

article.

Re: [RBW] Re: Some recent Gravel & Grind Riv builds and a last plug for our Riv and B-stone owners Bunch Ride Sunday the 14th

2016-08-19 Thread Robert Keal
As another plug for their rides, I went on a rather epic 53 miler with the
G folks sometime in July. Highlights included countless beautiful country
roads, a river swim stop, a ridiculously tough gravel climb that my legs
and Sam could not conquer without the help of my feet making contact with
the ground (AKA I walked), and a pitch dark single track and road descent
that ended after midnight. In short, it was tons of painful fun.

Everybody was super nice, too, and the general vibe of the ride was
decidedly "just ride." Can't wait until the next time I'm able to join up.

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-19 Thread William R.
Hey Mark, I hear ya, changing my behaviors and having great rides despite the
issue. Still, I can't help seeing what I can do to eliminate it. Complicated or
just a different way of making a derailleur? I'm going to find out. Zipping
down a hill would be the worse time for the chain to get sucked in. And it's
threatening to do that on its own without the slight back pedal test that I
did. I can just see my old self cresting a hill in oxygen debt, blissfully
descending the other side, and all hell breaking loose! It still bugs me that
last week this wasn't happening and now it is. I've minimized it as much as I
can. It doesn't seem like something that gradually developed. One day it wasn't
doing it, the next it was, or maybe I wasn't paying attention until it came to
my attention. The good times roll no matter. Trying things and learning!

Or, just as accurately, follow an open-wheeled bicycle in Amish country.

There may come a time when you find yourself riding behind an Amish
buggy, not able to go fast enough to get around it and pass. In that
circumstance, you will feel a strong impulse to line yourself up between
the wheels, in line with the buggy's back window. Do not do this! When
you are lined up between the buggy's wheels, you are also directly
behind the horse and anything that drops from the back end of that
horse. Fenders or no, you don't want your front wheel to ride through a
puddle of wet, slippery horse exhaust -- and you definitely don't want
your front wheel to skid out and go down into it. So if you do have to
ride behind a buggy, line up with one of the buggy's wheels.

Incidentally, in Lancaster County PA the Amish don't ride bicycles. They
ride large-wheeled scooters like this:

If you see people dressed like this riding bicycles in Lancaster County
(and on the Covered Bridge Metric you indeed will) they will be
Mennonites rather than Amish.
