I love my noodles, though I don't go into the drops that often and am mostly on the brake hoods. I'm intrigued by dirt drops, but Do you lose some of the comfort of the hoods position when the levers are angled inward like that? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
I rode noodles for years using Campy Ergo Shifters. On my latest Roadeo, I installed a Shimano 6800 group ( with Shimano std reach brakes). The brifters are longer and I needed a shorter reach bar. If I had used a shorter stem, the tops of the bars of the Noodles would have been useless. So, I went with Soma Highway One bars. On any bike with Campy shifters the Noodles would be perfect for me. Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
Since people seem to be voting, I'll cast my vote. I want a couple of simple things in a handlebar. I want a flat and short top that blends seamlessly into Ergo levers and I want a hand position in the drops that's comfortable. I guess I have to admit that I can't recall whether or not the ramps work on Noodles. I liquidated mine about 5 years ago and I don't remember. The curve of the drops is so tight as to make it impossible for me to ride with my hands in the drops. Soma Highway 1 in a 46. The perfect drop bar. Softly ergo, almost classic looking. Fantastic hand position in the drops. Perfect ramps. Perfect. -pb -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
Hello Olof, I'm in the not a big fan of the Noodle bar club as well. I have a pair laying around in the garage which had come on the QB when I bought it last February. I've been riding the VO rando bars at the 50cm width for the past few years. They rise up from the stem, which is opposite of the Noodle. I suppose it's what you find comfortable. My first 10 speed was a Schwinn Le Tour which had rando bars, so maybe I'm predisposed to them. I also really like mustache bars, I've been riding them since the spring. I find that both offer very good out of the saddle hand positions and that they are comfortable on long rides. Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
I like the noodle, but it's predecessor - the RM 13 dirt drop - is my favorite. I had the former on my Rambouillet until this summer, and the later on my Quickbeam. Every time I got on the Quickbeam, I was struck by the contrast of how comfortable the bars were, and regretful that I didn't spend more time on it. So I finally just moved the bars over. Both were designed by Grant as far as I know, and Riv used to sell the dirt drop before they designed the Noodle. The drop and reach are similar between the two. Both are nice and wide, so I feel like my chest cage can open up and allow me to breath. The dirt drop is straighter across the top, so both that grip position and the one at the hoods feel like more of a natural angle (less elbows-in / less twisted wrists). The dirt drop feels more rigid and direct. The two things I *really* like though, are: 1) The flare at the drops of the RM-13 allows me to sprint and climb without bumping my wrists. 2) Something about the downward curve of the Noodle made it really hard for me to ever mount the brake levers in a position where I could reach them comfortably from the drop position, and still have the hoods high enough to feel correct too. I always had to lean way over and contort my wrists uncomfortably upward in order to brake. One thing that I HAD to do with the dirt drop, that I SHOULD have done with the Noodle, was to add bar end extenders. Both bars seem to be intended for use with bar end shifters and, without them, the grip is too short. I'd suggest them to anybody for either bar, if you're not using bar ends. It's so much more secure and confident when moving from top to bottom quickly, and it gives you some space to move around a bit. I should add that, as with most of my preferences, this all comes from the fact that I have a mountain biking background and am really inelegant and clunky on any road bike. So YMMV. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
I've had trouble with long-term comfort on Noodles; I came away from PBP in 2007 (ridden on Noodles) with hand numbness. I generally have better luck on long rides with more traditional (flatter) bars. However, my Singer came with Nitto randonneur bars, which are like Noodle bars on steroids, with much more pronounced flaring, and have enjoyed them very much. I still like Noodle bars, but my experience hasn't matched Grant's enthusiasm for the design. --Eric N www.CampyOnly.com CampyOnlyGuy.blogspot.com Twitter: @CampyOnlyGuy > On Oct 27, 2016, at 11:29 AM, Wally Estrellawrote: > > The Noodle has worked best for me on all the drops I've tried. Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
I found the Noodles quite comfortable, once I ditched the wide ones and went back to 42s. I found I had to use a stem 1 cm longer, as they curve back a bit from the flats. The drop is deeper than I personally like, but the ramps are adequately long to be useful. At any rate, my wrists felt fine. However, I swapped my Noodles out for the Maes Parallel, which I find better in just about every way -- reach, ramp, drop, hooks, flats. Is the 176 the same as the 185, except with a bit of flare at the bottom? I used to think that the 185s -- same 140 mm drop and short 90 mm reach -- were comfortable, until I discovered bars with longer ramps and shallower drops. The Noodle has worked best for me on all the drops I've tried. I have them on 3 different bikes. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/AaD2apK6asw/maxresdefault.jpg The 176 looks like a nice bar too. [RBW] Re: FS: Deore shifters/pedals, Brand V barrel bag, wool vest, and more!
OK, bump. I still have a few things left that I'd like to get rid of, so I've lowered prices. Consider this a 48 hour sale of sorts: If I don't get bites by 10 pm Pacific Time on Saturday, the stuff will no longer be offered. I may sit on the items for awhile, donate, or in the case of a few things, go the dreaded eBay route. So now is your time! And remember: For those of you outside of Portland, Oregon, Payment will be done by PayPal, and please email me your zip code to estimate shipping costs. (Shipping costs not included.) Local pickup in Portland in either Woodlawn (NE) or on SE Hawthorne. Payment can be made with cash. Please email all inquiries to urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com - *Shimano Deore “deerhead” thumb shifter.* Model number SL-M700. Yes, the legendary beefy first generation Deore shifters that came stock on many a decent mountain bike in the mid-80’s, before the advent of SIS. (The shifters I sell are only friction.) These were stock on my Crested Butte. They still work, but are getting worn and don’t perform as well as they should, so be warned of this. But these shifters deserve a refurbishment and I’m not the one to do that! *$25 for the pair.* - *Tektro FL750 brake lever, right side.* Modern “city bike” lever, has 22.2 clamp. *NOT A SET, JUST ONE. $5* - *Rubena Cityhopper Tires, 26x2.0"* (52-559) cream. The non "tourguard" version of these decent wide urban tires. A bit dirty from use. If you are on the less-light side, ride a heavy bike, or ride through less than ideal conditions, I'd advise using a tire liner, thornproof tube, or tube sealant. *FREE but LOCAL PICKUP ONLY* - *Jandd Fanny Pack.* Pretty darn basic, medium size.* FREE WITH PURCHASE OF ANOTHER ITEM* - *Velo Orange steel rear fender, 700C size.* No hardware included. *$5 LOCAL PICKUP ONLY* - *Shimano Deore XT MTB pedals, late 80's vintage.* Designed to be used with clips, or Powergrips, like the Powergrips included with the pedals! A bit scuffed but still work fine. *$20 FOR THE PAIR.* - *Rivendell Brand V barrel bag. *The older version before the current "Sackville Branding". Canvas bag with velcro straps and two side loops, so can be mounted to handlebars or saddle. Pretty voluminous, the largest of the "barrel" bags I've found! There are three patches on the front, glued on with Shoe Goo, so they can be removed if you want. *$25.* Thanks for looking! -Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Very cool, Grant. I figured (correctly) it was something you cooked up to make a single seat lug casting work with any stay angle. Lugged seat clusters for all! [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
Thanks for the info. I have them on my Rambouillet. They are shorter ramps for sure but that's one of the reasons I got them. Very comfortable. But after using noodles for so long I'm used to the bend back on the tops. But seems like they're just as comfortable as noodles. Even for a century ride. I am also interested in trying the Nitto MOD. 174 bar which looks like a mini noodle bar. One comment I will make on the non heat treated Nitto bars: I had 41 noodles on my Sam. I was getting ready to lock up the Sam and the bike was on the kickstand. The bike tipped over towards the drive side and fell on the ground. After that I started getting left arm pain when I would ride the bike. With new bars everything fine no more pain. I checked the fallen bars for alignment and they were bent about a millimeter. Laid the bars with back of tops on table and barends touching table. One barend was a mm or two off the table. They rock when pressing them Mark bar set video style. I am surprised that the bar got bent so easily just from the bike falling over at a standstill (unless the bars come out of alignment that way.). I thought perhaps a heat treated bar would not get bent so easily. But I ride narrow bars. I don't like the feel of wider bars. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
I thought anatomical bars were the ones with a flattish section in the downward bend for a flat "in the drops" position. No? These are also available in 31.8 as well which is cool for those that need it, has an "SSB" in the product name. Don't think Rivendell carries but can be found on Interwebs. -Jim On Thu, Oct 27, 2016 at 10:57 AM, Grant @ Rivendellwrote: > We like them because they have a flattish ramp and a the only good looking > ana-bend ever. Re: [RBW] New BLUG post! Frank Jones Sr
The only lug that doesn't allow angle-versatility is the CLEM lug, which is why we got the curvy seat stays--so we could make the chainsays the length we wanted. The upper seat stay socket is cast into the lug, so isn't variable. But structurally, it is SUPER. The lug and seat stay cap combo below (two pieces--the lug; the "sta-cap") allows a million degrees of rotation, so there's no limit to the angle. It has a neo-funqui look to it that I am warming up to because I see the structural advantages and some building possibilities, but right now, for me and for anybody who's gotten used to a normal side-of-lug attachment, it's TAKES some getting used to. It requires the same amount of brazing as a normal connection. Shown is the external cap, but there will be an internal one, too--Fancy and Plain. I promise to St. Peter that if this style was around in 1931 or whatever, most subsequent bikes would have been made with it, but it's kind of odd that it's coming out in 2017, when, if you were to ask the next pro-clad bike rider you see "What's a seat lug?" he'd give you a three-letter, one-syllabel, palindromic answer! [RBW] Re: Rosco v.3
Description of both being "roadish" does seem slightly suspect. It's interesting that they intentionally cropped off the handlebars in the photos of #5. A quick comparison tells me it might be similar to a 58cm production Joe, which would fit roughly the same size. Top tube is slightly shorter, but seat tube is slightly steeper, so probably a wash. Chainstays are actually quite a bit shorter than the Joe, so nowhere near "clemmish." I guess this is Riv's way of saying "Hey buy our bikes, they're like our mainline but slightly different, and we're not comfortable charging you $950 for a frame that will ride as well as our $2000 frames, so we need to differentiate them a bit more" -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: New BLUG post! Frank Jones Sr
I love my Joe Appaloosa with the cool horsey name and graphics; I think it's fits well with the sky blue paint 'cause I picture a beautiful horse under a sunny sky. But I couldn't for the life of me explain to someone what Joe Appaloosa means, or why it's presented as the maker of the bike, with the actual company name harder to find. It's just Grant's thing, and he owns the business! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
