[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread dstein
I cast my vote for the Jones H-Bar if you're doing a lot of single track.
As Bob K mentioned you need to do an adapter. I did it for a while and it
worked great. The only reason I changed was because I got a Jones bike w/ H
bar's and all my bikes have to have different handlebars ;). There's tons
of videos from Jeff Jones and threads on this bar so won't go into too much
detail, but it's my favorite for trail riding. The MAP bar is also good,
it's a smaller diamater version of the non loop version of the Jones bar.

Next I'd consider Albastache. Like Deacon, I now rock that on my
hunqapillar and enjoy it, though I do start to get hand numbness on a
longer ride with these that I don't get with drops (haven't played much
with height or angle though), I love these because you can go upright like
albatross or aggressive like drops.

I tried the bullmoose for a while too and wasn't a huge fan either. Though
I think grips could really play into it. In addition to ergon grips check
out the ESI chunky grips. May want to try those grips before redoing the
cockpit, it's an easy and cheap upgrade.

[RBW] Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Chad
I loved the Albastache with a Dirt Drop stem on my Bombadil. Several different
hand positions and the security of having the brake levers flat and forward on
the bar for the rough, more technical terrain. I too tried the Bullmoose bars.
I liked the extra width for increased leverage but wouldn't want to ride them
on longer distances due to lack of hand positions. ESI Chunky silicone grips
and getting the bars as high as possible helped with hand fatigue and made them
slightly more comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Justin August
I personally need more angle - like that of the MAP Bar (could be a suitable
solution here) or the Jones bar. I have a flat, low degree bend bar on my Salsa
El Mar and need something with more bend back.

I would definitely try the MAP bar if I were the OP. I was told by the maker
they are suitable for the riding he is describing.

[RBW] Re: ChocoMoose from 1987???

2016-12-23 Thread adam leibow
I've had a back & forth with the seller a bit via ebay messaging. He is
reading this thread, which is a good thing IMO because it shows he is aware
of the community. I am just trying to prevent somebody overpaying on what
is an already expensive item. Nobody likes wasting money, and the Riv
community is more tight-knit than most, so I found it appropriate to post
here just to make sure that I was doing the right thing in notifying the
seller that his information is incorrect. I understand the date coding,
which is a genuinely understandable reason to think they're from 1987. He's
not an idiot, just probably assumed too quickly they're from 1987 and not
2013..

[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Joe Bernard
I've always been a little bewildered by the antipathy in Riv/Bob World towards
flatbars. I agree they aren't much to look at, but for shortish town rides, and
especially technical trails, they work great for me.

I prefer Albas, Chocos or Noodles on my "nice" bikes because they look better
and work better on longer street rides, but I also have a couple folders with
flatbars and don't think twice about it for the types of rides I do on them.
Flatbars work for intended applications, they're just boring to look at.

Rivendell had them made like last year, and that they retail for $160. Then

I'm 99.99% sure Nitto made these the first time for Rivendell in

[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Bob K.
I really like the Jones H-Bar on my Krampus, and it'd be great in a Hunq.
Slight issue is that it's a 31.8 clamp diameter, so you'd have to use a thread
less conversion stem like this:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/stems/quill-stems/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor.html.

Some folks abhor the look, but form follows function in my mind.

I also really like the Albastache and 80mm Technomic setup on my Sam.

Re: [RBW] What is the RULE for Positioning the Tire Name on the Rim

2016-12-23 Thread Eric Norris
Having the label aligned with the valve hole also helps you find whatever was
stuck in your tire that gave you a flat. Once you find the hole in the tube, go
to that position on the tire to look for the offending item. If the hole is 90
degrees from the valve, look at both places 90 degrees from the label on the
tire.

It can be very hard to find tiny pieces of wire or glass, but knowing where the
leak was makes this much easier.

Re: [RBW] What is the RULE for Positioning the Tire Name on the Rim

2016-12-23 Thread Reed Kennedy
Per Brooks over on the Retrogrouch blog:

*"When using clincher tires, the tire labels should be lined up with the
valve stem. That's not just an aesthetic affectation -- it can help when it
comes time to locate and fix a punctured tire... Labels should be
visible/readable from the drive side of the bike."*
--
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2016/11/retrogrouch-rules-proper-bike-setup.html

That lines up with what I was taught at my LBS many moons ago, and what I
have done ever since.

Because I'm pedantic and some tire labels run for several inches these
days, I personally line the valve stem up with whatever aspect of the label
seems to best qualify as a "logo". On Compass tires, that's the blue oval
that says Compass in it. On Paselas I go the thing shaped like two swoopy
parenthesis.

Re: [RBW] What is the RULE for Positioning the Tire Name on the Rim

2016-12-23 Thread Steve Palincsar
Wrong & wrong: label goes where the valve goes (so you can match up tire
& tube in order to find the foreign object stuck in your tire once you
find the hole in the tube) and it goes on the drive side (because you
generally photgraph the bike from the drive side).

[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tim,

As you may have seen, I'm a fanboy of the new Moustache bars (aka
Albastache). Here's why: brakes in the curves allow braking on technical
descents, and I love the increased control of the forward (but not too
forward) position of the curves for riding technical (climbing or
descending). Albatross bars do not allow this. Plus the new Moustache bars
have the cruising position and the uber aero position on the brake levers
(though I never use it, preferring instead to just bend my elbows and tuck).

You can test with your old Moustache bars, but keep in mind they feel , at
least to me, dramatically more aggressive and narrow while the new
Moustache bars feel fully engaged and flowing.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Handlebar suggestions for the Hunq

2016-12-23 Thread Joe Bernard
I had lousy results with a Bullmoose, the angle of the grips was all wrong for
me. My hands seem to need either a flat bar, or grips coming straight back to
me like an Alba or Choco. I know it's not common amongst Riv Riders, but have
you tried a regular flat mtb bar? I would recommend the Alba if you had a long
stem and only street riding, but for the trail riding you've described it might
get a little sketchy. A flat bar should work well with your DirtDrop and
controls..maybe add Ergo grips for wrist support.

I have 150mm Nitto Bullmoose bars on the 58cm Hunqapillar. They are level with
the saddle (at the max extension), bar-ends mounted to thumbies, cork grips.
They don't work for me. Hand numbness ensues in a very, very short time. I have
now and again numbness with my noodle bars on my three other bikes (all with
bars at saddle height), that goes away easily with a different hand position.
So I have a set of the old-type Riv/Nitto Moustache (not Albastache) bars, or

Many of those message footers are added by corporate email infrastructure
after the individual hits the send button, and are required either by
corporate legal guidelines or in some cases, by law. Most folks sending
messages to this list are not actively pasting those footers in, nor have
them setup to automatically append to their messages on their own, so
there's not much they can do about it except maybe not use business email
for personal use. (I'm a former corporate email admin, still in IT, but

I find that kind of stuff amusing. Any contract would have to exist before
the message is sent. I don't think you can impose any kind of contact in
an ex post facto manner.

[RBW] Re: Hunqua tires

2016-12-23 Thread franklyn
Esteban,

I would definitely recommend the Big Ones if you can fit them. I have
experience with the 650B version of these tires

in the East Bay Hills. They are light and fast rolling. Great for
mixed-terrains. I changed to Compass SBH because of V-brake interference.

roll quickly on pavement and have enough size and tread to take on just
about any other surface but deep
 loose sand.
