[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-30 Thread Ron Mc
I had a really fast greenway ride today because the trails were all but
deserted due to our s. Texas winter weather. 50 degrees, overcast and low
humidity - it was great.
I began in the middle, went to one end, crossed back and went back to the
other end.
Near that 3/4 turnaround, I could see a mother ahead through the trees
herding 2 small kids, so I rang my first announcement bell, and another as
I approached closer, and of course I slowed way down to ride by them.
The mother apologized. I told her no, you guys have a blast.
On my way back, the mother did something really cool - she did nothing. She
didn't lunge for her daughter on the tricycle or yell at her. She left
alone to broaden her own horizons.
As I was about to pass the little girl I gave a soft ring and she looked
over her shoulder to see where I was.
Clearly, the mother felt safe with my awareness of her daughter.

I have to admit that I didn't consider velcro, but you're right, it would
hard to sew in this application. I used small grommets on the flap, but as
you can see in the pic, they are starting to pull out. Hand-sewn eyelets
would probably be better. The shock cord can be adjusted for length (for
varying loads) by using barrel adjusters underneath. Good luck, and Happy

2016-12-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Seems to be a desirable bag - if it were mine, and I didn't have a
sentimental attachment to it, I'd look for an alternative use for it or
sell/trade it and replace with a bag that works better in that space. I'd
try to avoid surgery, even without a sentimental attachment - it might be
under-engineered, but it appears beautifully crafted.

One alternative I'd consider is attaching some type of standoff either to
the bottom of the bag, back edge of bag, top of rack or backside of
seatpost so as to support the bag so it's sits at less of an angle, such
that accessing the buckles is less obscured and the buckles don't contact
the rack.

[RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed

2016-12-30 Thread iamkeith
I too keep seeing the title of this thread, and thinking of something
different. I wonder if this could help, though:

The only bell I have on any of my bikes is a "bear bell," kind of like one
of THESE
.

(There are exponentially more bears and mountain lions and moose where I
live, than there are paved pathways)

Anyway, there is a little magnet, embedded in a short strap, attached to
the bell. Moving the magnet to the bottom of the bell holds the clapper
tight against the inside, so it doesn't jingle. (moslty) I know the
brass on a typical bike bell isn't magnetic but, if the clapper is, maybe
there's a way to add a magnet to keep it from bouncing so much.

Thanks for the feedback ian. I read as much as I can and hand wring while
trying to make sense of the numbers but admittedly I am no where near close to
an expert on any of that. I usually just go by how a bike"feels" for what I am
looking to do with it. Now I had a long CS hunqapillar proto that really
didn't end up working for me. Perhaps it was my expectation of the bike based
on what I was thinking of using it for / as a "mountain bike that really didn't
make it work for me. or perhaps it was the way it was set up and how that got
along with my body proportions (longish? top tube bullmoose bars and long CS).
When i rode the appa I really didn't go into it expecting anything and I have a
surly that covers mountain biking so I wasn't framing the bike up as a full
blown off roader. When i just left well enough alone and pedaled...the ride was
GREAT. Just felt fun like a sporty kids bike. Made me want to "just ride"
around endlessly slaloming through anything I could find fast or slow didn't
seem to matter. I'm not exactly sure what makes the bike feel the way it does
or different from my first experience with long CS, but I gotta say it again
the ride felt great! Perhaps swept back bars are the magic ticket that make
the long CS shine for me, have to shake my head and say I dunno!? Does it
matter? But if the Clem rides even 80 percent the same as an appa then that is
totally close enough for me. As for the lugs I have a couple of other Rivs with
a full Monty worth of em. I actually like that clem is a bit plain. I am in my
40s now and grew up in the era of base ball card collecting and the notion of
keeping everything in gem mint condition. That has kinda followed me and I hope
to see clem as a little less precious and beausage worthy...we shall see !)

Re: [RBW] Re: Another Rosco v2 Build

2016-12-30 Thread Surlyprof
I agree with Patrick's suggestion, get a good one. I bought a decent stand
with REI rebates one year (LOTS of camping equipment bought that year!).
I've had the "Ultimate" repair stand for 20 years now and have never liked
it but can't justify a new one. Things I suggest watching for (that I have
disliked) is the clearance and the clamping. The clamp on mine has to be
screwed down with a knob. This is very difficult to do while you are
holding 25-35# of bike in the other hand. The clearances are also a
problem. Unless I have it held just right, the pedal hits the stand
(damned tripod!). Do the research and spring for the good one because even
a bad one may last a lifetime. Post mounted tool trays are helpful
additions as well.

[RBW] Re: XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-30 Thread Jeremy Till
Not to be pedantic, but it's actually the opposite: bikes with long
chainstays reduce the chain angle for a given lateral displacement between
chainring and cog. The extreme example of this is longtail cargo bikes
with triple front chainrings, which can be run in pretty much any
chainring/cog combination without coming close to rubbing on the fd.

[RBW] Re: Crankset snafu and front derailleur conundrum

2016-12-30 Thread GAJett
My AHH runs a 24-41-44 chainset with an old SunTour Cyclone fd. Shifting
is perfectly adequate in upshifts over the 17 tooth change.

My older Raleigh Competion sports a 26-49-52 chainset with a ancient Heuret
Jubilee fd, perhaps the lightest and most delicate of front ders. With
gentle shifting there is no problem over the 23-tooth change.

Note that both fd's are "racing" designs for double chainsets, not touring
triple designs, as necessitated by the half-step + granny setup. The major
limitation is that I cannot use the smaller third of the rear cogs as the
chain then rides on the bottom "tail" of the fd. This is really not a
problem, however, as these should not be used anyway due to cross-chaining
and those being duplicates of gears available on the two larger chainrings.

As many others have commented, you should have no problem with a double.
If you go to a triple, however, a more racing style fd may be needed so the
inner cage plate doesn't interfere with the middle ring as you try to shift
to the outer ring.

Cheers.

Because I own a a Clem(entine) & Atlantis (& I have ridden a Appa. On several
occasions) i worry that you may have made a mistake (but, maybe not?) Buying a
Clem based on the ride of an Appa. because they are quite different bikes and
ride nothing alike. I like both my Clementine and my Atlantis, but they are far
from interchangable.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed/Using a bell

2016-12-30 Thread masmojo
I rode mostly around town, it's rarely quiet enough that I would notice any
bell "humming" even out on a deserted trail, between the derailleur click and
tire contact noise bell vibration would not be a distraction at all as long as
you were using a bell with a trigger. I like the Crane bells with the spring
for around town, aside from a very loud, clear sound they also tell me when my
tires are over inflated! Too much air & the bell rings by itself over any
little bump! 

the reason, again I brought up the CX70 - they're on sale for $30

really good FD for a compact double.

I've run mine for !0,000 mi on a 42/25 step.

Joe, funny how both ways work, I've never had an issue running 8 speed
chains on 9 speed FD's, and you have, seems like a per bike basis. The
extra long stays may have something to do with it too, a little more
lateral flex than the same bike with say, shorter stays. Doesn't matter
though .. . . I have always found that every bike is unique anyways, even
parts that work for one bike may not work well on another. That said
though, I don't use any of the later Shimano Fd's , all mine are
specifically chosen for a straight as cage as possible, even the triple mtb
models I have which are 80-90's era.

Jack would do well with a new-new old stock 9 speed FD.
