[RBW] Re: Brass Bells

2017-01-15 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
I would think any type of modern auto paint protector sealant such as made
by 3M, Meguiars, Mothers, Turtlewax, Liquid Glass, etc., would work. And
you can use it on your bike frame as well as the car. There are boat
versions marketed but it's really all the same stuff. Such sealants
typically last 8-12 months, whereas old school carnuba wax last about 3
months.

The nice thing about modern sealants is you can just spray it on, let it
dry and wipe off any excess "haze" that may be left after it dries.
Silicone dioxide is the ingredient used in such products. It protects hard
surfaces, whether paint, chrome or brushed metal finish, raw or anodized.
The more expensive sealants have more SiO2 per ounce than the cheaper ones
and thus last longer. Treat your bell every few months and it should keep a
nice appearance. And while you're at it, just do the whole bike. Sealant is
particularly awesome on wheels to help protect from road grime (I rub it on
with cloth to keep it off of the brake track and then hit up the track with
a stone or 3M pad just to be sure it's clean).

I have 3 relatives who enter their cars in concours events and that's the
stuff they use (weekend driver cars, not garage queens). It works great on
my bike's OEM paint (none are powder coated but SiO2 works great on that,
too) and my boat's gel coat.

Hopefully that helps and doesn't cause any controversy like chain lube
does!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

[RBW] Easiest way to transport Saluki on Southwest

2017-01-15 Thread Justin August
In March my wife has a CME in LA. I'm going to fly down and meet her. I'd love
to bring my Saluki with me. No fenders, front rack + basket, rear Bagman (may
omit and buy an Ehrlen while down there), Paul center pulls, drop bars.

What's the easiest way?

I'm willing to do things to "rinko-Ize" it if need be.

Any suggestions?

Kai, it's good to know that combination works. I just stripped a mini velo of

2017-01-15 Thread adam leibow
why not get an Evasion or better yet, wait for the Shred Eagle from Crust?
Romanceur kinda works as a MTB but I can't see feeling really confident on
it considering the geometry, high top tube, and overall design philosophy.
I think the Rom is happiest as a mixed terrain long distance crusher /
randonneur kinda bike. also, low trail's gonna be hella twitchy when you're
trying to rip... my rippiest bike (surly krampus) has like 80mm of trail.

I have Riv silver down tube shifters mounted on my Clem's standard issue
shifter mounts. I think they're great! Mostly for the fact that the mount
rotates, but they seem to hold well enough. And since they're already on your
bike it would be an infinitely cheaper option than Paul's or the IRD mounts if
you decide to swap out the shifters.

Re: [RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm glad the problem and the solution is so simple. I've used so many
shifters with attaching screws that gradually loosen; the old Nuovo Record
dt shifters were notorious for doing this. Blue Loctite is a wonderful all
purpose fix, along with vise grips, duct tape, and big hammers.

FWIW, with my otherwise superbly excellent Silver bar end shifters, you
have to get the bolts' tension just right to avoid both binding and
slipping. And the D screws loosen. I tossed the D screws in favor of allen
button head bolts, to which I apply a bit of blue loctite. Get them just
right and they stay adjusted.

Nice suggestion Chris! Unfortunately, the only 100lber I know who might be
able to is a 12 year old girl, and I worry she's a bit too small to manage

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks Joe, that's a super generous offer and I appreciate it. I think I
already have a pair of cheaper thumbies in a parts box from
velo-orange:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/shifting-freewheels-cassettes/shifters/falcon-friction-thumb-shifters.html

But in truth, if I replace the shifters that came with it, I'll probably go
for the IRD ones or paul thumbies and silver or shimano shifters. Or hold
out for the new ones riv are putting out. But thanks very much for the
offer.

Ya, the finicky shifting, ghost shifting is something that doesn't sit well
with me. But I love the ride of the bike otherwise. I think Patrick's
suggestion is promising and I'll try that before doing anything more
drastic.

I'm really trying to avoid blinging out the clementine, on account that it
is intended to be a practical, economy kind of ride. But I do seem to
incline toward replacing the frugal with fancy - just so long as the
function improves.

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Well phooey, I was hoping that would work. The problem with the shifters is
they were designed for IGH hubs, where whatever ratchet effect in the shifter
was overcome by the solid clicks being in the hub. Without the hub involved,
the shifters - I've used them on a Clem demo I rode - tend to want to settle
into one of those little clicks. On the one day of riding I spent with them I
had a tough time finding and holding the right gear I was looking for..it drive
me batty.

I don't think you need to replace the derailer (yet), just match it with a real
8-speed shifter, or go friction with Silver Power Ratchets.

Hey, I just thought of something. I have a SunRace 8-speed thumbshifter that
matches your shifters. You would have to swap your current righty to the ledt,
then mount the 8-speed on the right, but it would work without having to pop
for two new shifters. I bought it a while back from RBW and used it for a short
time on a now-abandoned project. They're only 18 bucks new, so you can have it
for flat-rate shipping, which is about $7.00. Looks like the link below, let me
know if you want to try it.

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks for your help Joe.

t's an 8 speed cassette. In the 5th position, when pedalling hard, it
shifts to 4th. Unfortunately the pic I took isn't very helpful and shows it
in the 4th position. It doesn't matter how much I try to offset the
derailer medially, it'll either start trying to shift to the next higher up
gear, or it'll shift the the next lower gear under load.

But I don't believe the shifter is indexing - as near as I can tell it
clicks, but the clicks don't correlate to any gear. And from what I
remember reading a while back the irrelevant clicks were intended to add to
the charm of the bike. In any case, if the derailer and/or shifters are
gonna be this finicky, I'd rather replace them with something more
reliable. I guess my concern is that I'll buy bits and still have the same
problem. If the root of the problem is that: I'm heavy + the mixte frame
is more prone to flex + the chain is super long.

Thanks,

Sky

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Ok, let's try this. Shift into the middle of the cassette, which would be 5th
from biggest on a 9-speed. Get it into whatever click seems to correspond with
being able to pedal that gear normally. Now go back to the derailer and see
where the pulleys are lined up. Are they sitting directly under the 5th cog, or
slightly to the right? If so, you can turn that adjuster more until the pulleys
are slightly left of the cog. Shimano derailers can function this way because
of the floating top pulley.

For true indexed systems I set them up with this leftward bias. It still allows
solid shifts to smaller cogs, while making that climb up to bigger ones a
little easier. This should solve your problem, I don't think that stout frame
is going to flex enough to cause ghost shifting. Good luck!

[RBW] Brass Bells

2017-01-15 Thread George Schick
During the frozen Winter months in this part of the country I like to clean
and maintain my bikes, making any upgrades or replacements as necessary.
One thing I always run into is a large patch of reddish-brown rust,
oxidization, or whatever you want to call whatever it is that happens to
brass my a bell. I polish it out (which takes quite a white because it's
quite thick) until it looks pretty much normal again using Happish
Simichrome polish. By the end of the riding season this year it'll be back
again. Just that one patch.

I understand that there's something you can apply to brass to "seal" it so
this corrosion doesn't happen. Anyone on here know anything about that?

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Sky Coulter
I think it's in both directions. Hard to tell because it only happens
underload and discombobulates me everytime it happens. Thanks for the
advice, I'll try the adjustment you suggest - certainly easier and cheaper
than replacing bits.

Thanks Joe.

[RBW] ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Is it shifting both directions under load, or only one way? Those weird
index-not-really-index shifters may have the derailer pulleys located just off
center of the cogs, which causes the ghost shift under load.

The trick in that case would be to use that adjuster thingy on the derailer to
loosen or tighten the cable a smidge. Example: If the shift is always to a
harder gear, turn the adjuster counter-clockwise a half turn, which will move
the derailer cage slightly left towards the bigger cogs.

[RBW] ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-15 Thread Sky Coulter
Hey,

hoping for some helpful advice, thought I'd throw it out to the group.

A while back I bought the demo 59cm clementine from rivendell:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/140959259@N03/31954788560/in/dateposted-public/

Issue: when I stand and peddle the bike shifts gears on the rear cassette.

Suspicion: I think this is happening because I weigh 240lb and the long
chainstays necessitate a very long chain. When I stand and peddle I flex
the bottom bracket shifting weight side to side. This flex is propagated
down the chain to the rear cassette growing more exaggerated the further
down it travels until it skips the chain from one gear to another.

Question 1: Does this sound right? It doesn't happen when I'm seated and
pedalling so I don't think it's a bent derailer.

Question 2: Any advice on how to stop it? I was following a discussion a
month back or so on clutch rear derailers that manage chain slap for
mountain bikes. The impression I got was that if a clutch rear derailer
dampens chain movement adequately to stop chain slap, then maybe it would
help resolve the ghostshifting issue I'm having.

I quite like the clementine and am really hoping to resolve this issue.
Even if I can't fix it, the bike will still be adequate for my immediate
needs (rides with baby). But I'd like to be able to get full use from the
bike.

Thanks for any advice or helpful thoughts,

Sky in new west

Re: [RBW] Question about stand over and head tube

2017-01-15 Thread iamkeith
If i understand your question correctly:

1) bottom bracket height matters a lot. For a given (& workable) standover
height, the saddle can come down closer to the top tube with a corresponding
drop in bottom bracket height, which then brings saddle and handlebar heights
closer to equal - before even looking for other tricks like extended head tubes
or tall stems.

2) the riders of most of the bikes you're looking at probably dont sweat the
standover clearance (they're not "crotch-worriers" as riv terms it). It is
likely much more minimal than you're used to.

3) most bikes fit better for people of average proportions, or those with
long limbs (inseam) and short torso. Someone with shorter legs, of an otherwise
identical height on an otherwise identically sized bike, might actually prefer
the top tube to slope down from the headtube connection, and have more seatpost.

Re: [RBW] Question about stand over and head tube

2017-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Lee, if you're getting a lot of seatpost and stem showing, but little standover
clearance, you're probably on a frame with a high bottom bracket and 700C
wheels. For an extreme example of this you can search stuff about the Pashley
Guv'nor. That bike is based on an ancient path racer design with a bottom
bracket almost level with the rear dropouts, and when properly sized has no or
even negative standover clearance.

I hope our answers have helped a little bit. There's quite a few variables
involved, which is why folks like Grant work so hard to sort them out.

some decals from Riv. Its in good shape one super tiny ding that has been
there since I bought it, does not affect the bike one bit. Asking $750 for
frame/ fork/ headset/ bottom bracket/ wheels. Plus packing and shipping. We

Re: [RBW] Question about stand over and head tube

2017-01-15 Thread Lee Legrand
I am asking how frame builders are designing bicycle that look the way they
do, without sloping top tubes. My mind says it is not possible without a
high top tube, yet bicycle frame builders are designing frames that look
like the Herse you have in this email. Part of the reason I am thinking
like this is that I have a old bicycle with a pretty flat top tube or looks
like there is no slope in it at all, yet the bicycle requires a dirt drop
to get the handlebar high enough. The top tube is high so there isn't room
while standing over it. Its weird in my mind but I do have alot of seat
post and stem to get me up there. More than what is shown in the pictures
you have Patrick.

[RBW] Question about stand over and head tube

2017-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
My 51cm Appaloosa has 6 degrees of rise to the headtube, then the headtube juts
up an inch over that, plus the steerer adds another inch. So I get a couple
inches of standover in front of the saddle, but don't need a tall stem because
so much height has been added to the frame up front.

The front height can be duplicated for me with a mostly level toptube, but
would require a 53 or 54cm seattube, robbing standover clearance. In the olden
days this was a common setup..folks didn't concern themselves much with
standover, they just rode big frames with slammed seatposts and stems.

[RBW] Question about stand over and head tube

2017-01-15 Thread Lee Legrand
This is a question towards people who are involved in frame design but
anyone can respond. I have been thinking about this but it has been more
academic than of practical use. I have looked at bicycles on Flickr of
MAP, Rene Herse, Grand Bois, Rivendell, Mariposa and others but I have
always thought how can these frames have such headtube lengths with stand
over of the top tube that fits the rider. It would seem that most bicycle
should have a slight, slant towards the head tube from the seat tube to
give stand over clearance while feet on the ground but my mind keeps saying
that the stem should be much longer that what is shown in these picture.
You can only go so high on the top tube due to stand over and to get any
adjustment for handlebar, it has to be mostly stem if you are somewhat of a
average size person but the stem on these bicycle are not long at all. In
fact, they look sensibly and lend towards the aesthetics of the bicycle.
Can anyone explain that?

sf bay area CL for a while: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/bik/5951595069.html
No connection to me (just a consistent temptation).

[RBW] Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-15 Thread Zach Duval
This will be my first time using disc brakes. Have you used the TRPs before? I
have been leaning toward Klampers, as they'very got reviews for solid stopping
power and the materials seem better for longevity.

What's the fundamental difference between centerlock and 6 bolt?

Re: [RBW] My Cantis cant get no respect.

2017-01-15 Thread BenG
I like cantis. They look interesting, and it's fun using something that I can
see operate. XT cantis on my MB-1 perform fine on steep and fast descents at
Brown County State Park here in Indiana. Putting a Fred Flintstone foot down
could suffice for all my other rides, in comparison.

Re: [RBW] A nice morning for a ride

2017-01-15 Thread Daniel Betancourt
Nice! Looks like you had a fun time. I like the color of that bike.

What is entailed with the brevet series ride(s)? How far do you go and is
it with a large group or do you ride solo or with a small group of friends?

I haven't gone on any group rides yet and just ride solo or with the wife.
I have looked up a number of Facebook & Meetup groups in the area but still
haven't gone on that type ride yet.

It was lovely in central AL too. After a church men's group breakfast, I helped
a dad render his big box store purchased Huffy rideable for the birthday boy
son. Then met friends for some rural hilly miles. With a nice brevet series on
tap this year, the old legs need some training!

Here's my Rambouillet dragging me up a hill.

Thanks. I've also got to thank my Riv enabler friend Les who turned me on

rode and how I felt afterward.

I first rode through downtown Oviedo which like Key West is known for
their roaming chickens and had to take a pic.

There is a short offroad section which mud and rocks that I hate riding
over with my road bike (see pic below). The Sam handled it with no issues.
That is a big plus for me.

I averaged 13.2 mph over the ride and was generally pleased with the
performance and lack of my back and wrists getting sore when riding my
 road
 bike.

My legs are sore from the ride but that is to be expected. I'm still
getting used to the saddle and haven't ridden that distance in some time
 so
I'm a bit saddle sore. Another explanation is that the saddle still isn't
broke in yet. One nice thing I was able to do was to change my riding
stance to sitting straighter up which altered the pressure on the saddle
more on my pubic bones and less on my groin. I don't have that option on
 my
 road bike.

So far I'm loving this new bike! I'm having a Nitto R14 rear rack
installed on the bike today and looking forward to going out on a group
social ride around downtown Winter Park tomorrow with the wife. That
 should
 be a lot of fun.
