Jagwire also makes end-to-end couplings for both shift and brake housings.

But the inline adjuster is also a good idea.

2017-03-13 Thread Scott Blouke
This is exactly what I did when I changed to a VO Cigne stem on a bike it
make the brake lines just too tight so I cut the old housing so the inline
adjusters were in a good spot then added new housing from the inline
adjuster to the housing stops worked perfectly.
I need to do this on another bike but it has full length housing runs so I
might just add two adjusters one by the brake and one by the lever and put
a longer piece of housing at the brake end.

Re: [RBW] Something French

2017-03-13 Thread Eric Norris
I see some of the features of this bike—a sturdy but light lugged steel frame,
racks for carrying small loads, fenders, wider tires (Singer designed mostly
around 700x28, not wide by Rivendell standards but wider than most “racing”
bikes of the 70s, 80s, etc.), longish wheelbase—and see a direct line to
today’s Rivs. Rivendell doesn’t build to quite the same level of detail, but
the idea of a beautiful machine that you can ride for the rest of your life is
definitely there.

Singer’s constructeur, Ernest Czuka
(https://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/12/22/people-who-have-inspired-us-ernest-csuka/

),
is also notable for carrying the torch for fine framebuilding (along with a
handful of other French constructeurs) through decades of lean times. Walk
around the American Handbuilt Bicycle Show and you’ll see dozens of builders
following in his footsteps—every fine, purpose-built bicycle today exists in
part because of the influence of the French constructeurs.

P.S. Yes, I love my Singers!

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborn

2017-03-13 Thread G.E. of EVL
Late to the party... however, I just wanted to say that I've had my Sam for
7 years now and can't imagine not having it. It's been set up with drop
bars and albatross bars. It's had racks and bags galore, and I've had it
stripped down to ride a bit faster. It handles well both while carrying
items and riding it more as a road bike (it's not quite capable of racing
speeds - but that was never its intention). The size I have is no longer
made (so, hopefully, nothing every happens to it!), and it has 650b wheels
because it was a small size. As a female, I have struggled a bit with the
long top tube (Initially, I had an 8cm stem that was too long and ended up
with a 5cm stem in order to make it ride-able comfortably for me, but the
super short stem comes with its own kinks). I guess my bit of advice might
be to test ride, if you can, first. Since Riv sizes by PBH, sometimes (in
my opinion) a person can end up on a larger frame than s/he really wants or
is comfortable riding. I've put thousands of miles on my Sam though, so
obviously, it's hard for me to find too many negatives. I'll put it this
way, of my current bicycles, if I was forced to have just one bike, the Sam
H would be the one I'd keep.

Good luck to you in your search for a retirement bicycle! I would
definitely consider the Sam Hillborne as a possibility.

[RBW] Decisions, Decisions... Too few? Too many? Just right??

2017-03-13 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Sorry if this would seem to be off topic, though hopefully it is not, but
Grant, in another post stated, and I hesitate to quote but it was a point I
totally agree with and think about.

"...The bike MARKET is super crowded, and it leads to dozens of categories
and aberants and variety...and on one hand it's cool that bikes really can
travel motorlessly over more terrain--that's one of the good things,
although I'm not talking about eFat bikes penetrating the wilderness when i
say "good"--but it also leads to overspecialization with too many
categories, and then new riders go shopping and ask for bikes by category
and not by this is how I'm gonna use it"

Not that I am anything more than a participant and supporter in the world
of bikes, but it makes me a little crazy when I hear of sagging bike sales,
at least here in the U.S., maybe worldwide. Bikes sales should be growing!
And the more bikes out there, the better the world might be...

Anyway, I was just listening to a Ted Talks podcast, maybe the latest
(
http://www.npr.org/programs/ted-radio-hour/519264798/decisions-decisions-decisions

) and a researcher, Sheena Iyengar, was talking about an experiment she did
with displaying and selling jars of jam at a fancy grocery.

To cut it short, they displayed 24 different jars of jam for sampling and
selling... 60% of the people stopped to look and sample but only 3% (of the
60%) bought.
When they displayed only 6 different jars of jam, only 40% of the people
stopped, but 30% (of the 40%) bought.

Not that there are any great answers to the dilemma, but I do believe the
bike industry has, in a race to the end, fallen into the trap. I tell
people these days, trying to sound enthusiastic and positive, that there
are now bikes for almost every conceivable circumstance. And there is no
argument (from me) that that is a truly bad thing. Still, Sheena calls it
a "choice overload problem" and I think that's a very real effect.

With that, I do think Rivendell has approached the problem well! They
might have bikes that overlap in function but they span different price
ranges and, in this world, that is a necessity. And each and every one of
the bikes is designed to be ridden, enjoyed, bring a smile.

I have not listened to the entire podcast just yet, and don't know if it's
fully recommended, but that part of the discussion (16:00-18:00 in) made me
think.

[RBW] OT: Update on ECHS Mountain Bike Racing Team (some Riv content, plus begging for donations)

2017-03-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
Many of you know I'm the volunteer team mechanic for El Cerrito High School
Mountain Bike Racing Team. I have a son at ECHS, but he's a swimmer. I
volunteered for the team almost entirely for me. So far, it's one of the
better things I've done for myself. We race in the Norcal High School
Cycling League, in the Southern Division. We are one of six D1 teams, and
by far the smallest. D1 is dominated by Salinas High School, who regularly
field ~40 riders, while we field ~15.

Last weekend was our second race of the season and our team's best
performance ever. The race course was adjacent to Laguna Seca Raceway in
Monterrey, CA. Our EC Gauchos won three races (JV Boys, JV Girls, and Soph
Boys) and we got two second place medals and a fourth. We placed second in
the team competition behind Salinas, but beat both of our East Bay Rivals
Berkeley and Albany. We also hold a strong second place in the season-long
team overall competition. It's a big challenge for our small team because
you use your top 8 finishers to make your team score. When you only field
15 riders, going 8 deep is tough.

My weekend had several highlights. I solo-camped out at Laguna Seca Friday
night, and the evening was so warm and dry that I didn't even have to use
my rainfly. I enjoyed a very pleasant coffee outside on Saturday morning.
Being on site gave me plenty of time to do a lap on the very challenging
race course. Grant would possibly approve that I underbiked with no
shocks, but would undoubtedly disapprove at how much crabon I was running.
Besides personal stuff a couple of our kids dug incredibly deep and had
best ever results. Being around their energy has been a sort of fountain
of youth experience for me.

Sadly, during the offseason, our team trailer was stolen. So we've been
renting a U-Haul for each of these race weekends. We have an opportunity
to buy a used trailer now, but are quite short on funds. If you feel like
helping out a terrific group of kids with ANY amount, please check out our
GoFundMe below. Thanks

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith

2017-03-13 Thread Richard Rios
Hi,

I'll chime in here, as I was in a somewhat similar situation only I test road
the appa and bought a clem blind after doing so. I feel that the appa's ride
was a bit snappier overall it felt to me a bit more roadish. Clem in the other
hand I would characterize as a bit more stable perhaps leaning a hair more
towards rough stuff. I'd put any notion of clem being strictly commuterish to
the side. Yes Clem would make a great commuter but it really is an all rounder
like any Riv. Truth be told I instantly loved the feeling of the appa and when
I first road the Clem not so much. But the more time I have spent aboard Clem
the more I have grown to LOVE it. I intend to do a full write up at some point
but will share a few impressions here. Clem is smooth and stable, but not slow.
Slow is relative but for the type of bike / non race bike Clem scoots along
nicely. Put the hammer down and clem responds surprisingly well. Clem is a
rambling bike for riding like when you were a kid. Pack a bag lunch and some
Capri sun and set off exploring for the day. Clem is great on any "road"
surface and really shines on non technical fire trails. Clem is perfect for a
front rack and basket. The bike really is a home run in so many ways. all that
said I have a few nits to pick. The sunrace shifters and I have yet to make
good friends. The little clicks that sometimes put you in gear perfectly and
sometimes not are...well less than ideal. I would have like to seen the 52cm
size come with 58cm boscos. for some reason the 55s felt to narrow to me. I'm
pretty medium at 5' 9" 170ish. lastly the little rubber seals / dust caps on
the hubs have taken some fiddeling with to stop squeaking. Again all minor
things. I think either way you go you won't be dissapointed. might want to ask
yourself if the lugs are worth it to you or not. also I feel a bit more at ease
using clem then my other more expensive Rivs but that's just me as I grew up
during the everything needs to stay in mint condition baseball card hoarding
80s /90s ears and that has kinda stuck with me. Hope that helps some. Again I
really enjoy clem and can whole heartedly recommend it owing / having had owned
a numer of other Rivs. Ride wise you will be missing nothing if you buy a clem
except for the lugs of course.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith

2017-03-13 Thread Garth
Umm, the differences are not so much in the frames but in what you want,
and that you are undecided of what you want. I see no "class" of Rivendell
frames, no matter who builds them or how much you pay. Heck, a frame is a
frame, a bike is a bike, ride it or not rather simple really.

There is this thread as well.

My take on them is they are pretty similar and both excellent.
If I had most of a build in my parts bin I think I would spring for the
Appa frame otherwise I would get the Clem complete.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith

2017-03-13 Thread Philip Kim
Hi, I went through the same dilemma and test rode both.

Clem - is longer stretched out, heavier tube gauging, hunqapillar fork,
more tire clearance

Appalosa - a bit less stretched out (not by much), i believe a bit lighter
tube gauging, atlantis-heavy fork, smaller tire clearances

I would say the Clem rode more stately - almost like a fast MTB cruiser (i
loved it), and the appaloosa rode more like a traditional road touring
bike, but kind of a cruiser

I ended up going with the appaloosa, mostly due to sizing options, and the
fact I don't do too much off-roading anymore. i plan to run 27.5x2s on my
appaloosa and 27.5x2.1s knobbies for more dirt stuff.

[RBW] Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith

2017-03-13 Thread Davey Two Shoes
Hello Everyone!
I'm new here, but my love of Rivendells is not!
I'm getting ready to get my first Riv and its likely to be a Clemy or an
Appaloosa. I have ridden a Clem and I enjoyed it quite a bit, I have not
rode an Appaloosa. Lugwork and aesthetics aside what are the real
differences between the two bikes? They seem pretty similar to each other
with their long geometry and wheel configurations. I understand the Clem is
meant to be more of an everyday commuter and the Appaloosa more of a
tourer, but is this just waxing poetic? What I'm really asking about, I
guess, is the difference in ride character between the two bikes, or are
they akin to an entry level vs fully loaded version of the same vehicle.

Thanks guys!
Dave

[RBW] WTB Nitto (Pearl) 9cm

2017-03-13 Thread nathaniel nichols
Finally building my orange Toyo riv Rambo (are they all toyo?) and looking for
a Nitto 9cm stem preferably NP/Pearl or dynamic in 26.0. Is there any diff in
angles on those nittos? I know the Jaguar looks very aero but I'm still not
sure about the others.

Basically I don't need the ultra long quill either, it's a "60cm" frame and my
pbh is 86. I like the looks of Pearl/dynamic and I'm aware that they apparently
measure a tad longer than other stems.

Also still deciding on either 8spd campy chorus brifters I have lying around,
paired with campy open pro ano wheelset, or bar ends. Possibly looking for a
shimano wheels set too, max 32h. Going 7,8 or 9 speed. Haven't worked out all
the details so lemme know what ya got!
