Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-05 Thread Julian Westerhout
Daniel,

As Vince explained it to me, there are two variations depending upon size
of HHH. We have a large, and the kit included a 203mm rotor, a Shimano
Acera disc brake, and an appropriate rotor/brake mount. The cost of these
was $51. There were also several options for controlling it -- I opted out
of those as we're going to use a vintage Suntour XC thumb shifter on the
stoker handlebar to control the drag brake.

[RBW] Re: regarding orange bikes

2017-05-05 Thread Kieran J
I like my orange Rambouillet for the most part. It's very distinctive and
unique. Sometimes I do get tired of the creamsicle colour; it does
sometimes feel a bit dated and it doesn't match all my clothing. I have
thought at times about a repaint in a more neutral tone. Then I think about
how it would be a shame to blast that nutty 3D metallic paint off, and I
like it again.

Re: [RBW] OTT: 10 speed X Wide Low(2x)?

2017-05-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't understand: why would the chain get caught between the *rear* cogs
of a 10 speed cassette? They're closer together than 9 are. Do you mean,
the narrower chain might get caught between the chainrings, being "9 speed"
and not 10?

As far as it working, I don't see why not. I'm using an old Ritchey Logic
crankset, from the 8 speed era (?) with a home brew 10 speed and it works
fine; High/Low: 42/28. I've used 5 speed era cranks (TA Pro 5 Vis), again,
High/Low, with 9 speed cassettes; I did have the chain skate once or twice
between the rings but it went away for some reason. I certainly didn't do
anything to it. The rings and hardware were all old and, AFAIK, original.

I think -- am I right? -- that cranksets are very tolerant of different
chains; that's been my experience. Cassettes are more finicky, of course.

I've done a 10-speed chain with a Sugino 0x801d, which is similarly meant
for up to 9 speed. Biopace, so I couldn't do anything fancy with the

Small Sage Frameset (includes headset, seatposts, Nitto 'moose stoker stem)
Bosco Bullmoose threadless captain bars
58cm Bosco stoker bars
170mm Silver crankset
2x110mm BBs
2xMKS Sneaker pedals

I had everything else already, including my Rich-built tandem wheelset.
I'm going to go without a disc brake to start.

I would guess because dual pivots and center pulls are easier to set up, it
saves 4 things to braze on just right, and Paul racers or other side pulls let
you use all the clearance the frame provides.
You want more clearance buy a hunqapillar.

I wonder why they switched from cantilevers? Mine had the most wonderful
IRDs, best brakes I've ever used (this with Noodles and Tektros) and I

Anyway, they solve the reach problem and maximize clearance for the frame.

Re: [RBW] WTB Map Ahearne Bar

2017-05-05 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hello Conway,

I have some 610mm (the wider version, I think) in silver if you are
interested. They have been mounted but I decided on the narrower version
for the bike I was testing. Anyway, they are almost new! I could send
pictures as well if those would be helpful.

I could sell for $45 including shipping CONUS. Let me know and absolutely
no worries if you have already found some.

Thanks,

Bob Lovejoy

It's possible I may have a second one.

[RBW] Re: Choco bars - again

2017-05-05 Thread Jim S.
Chris, I like the choco norms. I think this bar would be interchangeable
with the albatross bar, except that its arguably better in a couple of
ways. First, it goes back a bit farther, and second, there's a nice flat
area on the front to grip for an alternative.

If you think it goes back too far, not to spend your money for you, but you
could keep the choco bars and order a shorter stem.

Possible downside to choco norms is that maybe albatross bars look nicer,
more swoopy, less utilitarian, but such distinctions are matters of taste.

I have albatross on a Cheviot, and choco norm on a Rosco, and I think
they're both very appropriate. My hands have never hurt with either bar.

[RBW] Re: Choco bars - again

2017-05-05 Thread Ryan Fleming
I have to say, I'm not sure I'm too comfortable on the Choco norms yet
either.. when I got on my mixte they still felt too far back and the front
felt a little twitchy. Mixte is also quite a bit more upright than I'm
used to.I am a long-time moustache bar rider...stem level with saddle ,
back at 45 degree angle or so but I can flatten my back a little more if I
need to on my other bikes

Think I have to just give myself some time to get used to them; the mixte
is a very different kind of a horse and I feel sure all will be good

I have my Molteni orange Della Santa and it just makes me happy gazing at
that color. I just posted some photos of spring cleaning it:

I also own the Burnt Orange Riv Allrounder and it's such a warm caramel
orange and very classy.

I just don't think you can go too wrong with it although my experience is
the color works best on more classic looking bikes.

[RBW] Choco bars - again

2017-05-05 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I am the proud new owner of a 2017 Appaloosa in silver. I planned on
getting one directly from Riv but waited too long and they were all gone.
So, I started dialing up all the dealers and The Wheelhouse LA said they
had a built up butternut in 51 (my size) but would check the boxes in back
from Riv. Well, sure enough, they found a 2017 silver. YAY!

So, I just got my bike yesterday from my LBS who turned it into a 1X10 (did
this to my San Marcos too). Love the Joe but the jury is still out on the
Choco norms. I have an extra Albatross but didn't want to change it out
too quickly after just one ride. So, my questions are; did it take you
guys some time to warm up to the Chocos? If you changed bars, what did you
go with?

Just as a perspective I have the Bullmoose on my Sam and Cheviot. I have
Ahearne-Map on my Quickbeam and Alba's on the San Marcos. I really like
the angle and width of the Bullmooses but since I already have 2 bikes with
that, was hoping for a different bar - IF I decide to change.

Re: [RBW] Re: regarding orange bikes

2017-05-05 Thread Eric Floden
My wife and I decided last year to treat ourselves to nice new rides -- she
got an orange Bombadil, and I got an orange BMC monstercross. We are both
still tickled with the colours, one year on. They both look sharp!

(When I had Gilles Bertrand build me a bike back in 1999 I got to pick the
colour and went for cobalt blue, which I still enjoy as well...)

BTW, I added some yellow reflective tape on my lock and was happily
surprised at how well it went with the orange.

Plus mention orange and it will provide a springboard for Grandson to tell
his orange knock-knock joke, which I have heard less than 1,000 times (so
far).

Re: [RBW] Re: "Modern" Components on a Riv?

2017-05-05 Thread Tim Gavin
Paul Racers should work fine with SRAM road brake levers or brifters.

AFAIK, although Shimano has slightly changed the cable pull of its road
brakes in recent generations, neither SRAM nor Campagnolo has changed
theirs. SRAM and Campy brake levers have the same short cable pull they've
had for years, at least since "aero" road levers came out mid-80s.

squeeze them in my budget, if not, then Tektro Sidepulls.

I think the Racers will be fine, but I'm unsure about long reach sidepulls.

[RBW] Re: D2R2 2017

2017-05-05 Thread somervillebikes
I rode the D2R2 in 2011, 2012 and 2013 (115k once and 100k twice, never had
the balls for anything longer-- even the 100k is pretty challenging), but I
haven't been back since. I may make it back this year. One thing that
prompted me to take a break from it, despite the breathtaking beauty of the
area, was the crowds, which seemed to get bigger each year. The vibe is
really good overall, but increasingly there were racing teams that were
riding it as training, not taking in the experience as it was intended, and
there were also lots of groups of people who were riding abreast and taking
up the whole road. It kind of turned me off by the third time, but on the
other hand, it's a wonderful cause, and the food and beer are plentiful and
very good. I believe all routes take in part of the Green River route, but
I'm guessing the Green River ride itself is a lot more relaxed (and flat).

I'm going on 5 years and am really happy with the durability of the bags.
The corners of my small green shop sack have gotten worn but that's about
it. I use it more than the large one.
