[RBW] Re: FS: Pair of Parigi Roubaix Tires BRAND NEW

2017-05-06 Thread Peter Adler
Just to check:

   1. If I recall correctly, Parigi-Roubaix was the name Challenge used for
their 700x27 tubulars, while Paris-Roubaix was the name for the
clincher/"open tubular" version. Or was it the other way around? In any
case, Challenge has since changed the branding - now *everything's
*Paris-Roubaix.
   So, tubular or clincher?
   2. Black or skinwall?
   3. Yes, they are a bear to install when new, and oversized rims don't
help. I'd have installed my set on my Bianchi gofast, if I didn't know that
the Ambrosio rims on that bike are an oversized (about 610mm) absolute
   nightmare for tire installation.

Horses -- I understand. Fortunately, around here, the soil is sandy and
usually dry, so that while we have plenty of horses, their hoofmarks are
annoying only after rains (and the soil dries very quickly here) when the
surfaces are for a brief while very choppy.

René,

Your build-so-far looks terrific!

We're going with B17 and Flyer S in honey. I've been looking for cream
cable housing with no luck (anyone know of any?) -- I would like to match
the decals, but am considering going with Velo-Orange's brown or perhaps a
silver.

I must admit I sort of like the boldness of the blue on yours -- despite
myself! :)

Yeah, the first time I saw an orange bike with a tan Brooks saddle I had an
epiphany. They looked so awesome. Until that moment, and still today,
almost every orange frame I see has black parts. It was the same when I saw

why my custom is configured that way.

This is certainly an awesome project, and these frames are so cool!

I could not have gotten luckier. The bike is great. The seller was
fantastic to work with...in that he actually delivered the bike to me. It
is mostly his build, minus the saddle and pedals. I don't plan to change
anything, except maybe adding a pump to the 3rd set of bottle braze-ons.

Most importantly...the color will be staying, as it is just what I want.

Ever onward,

[RBW] Renés orange Hubbuhubbuh

2017-05-06 Thread olofstroh
With bigger and bigger astonishment have I read all post with praise of orange
bicycles. Orange is not my choice for a bicycle, let´s put it that way.

But now, looking at Renés tandem. It´s right, it´s even awesome! If it rides
anything like it´s looks it´ll be a fantastic bike.

Good luck!

Progress photos:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/albums/72157680299609103/with/34450768136/

After a long day at work getting, among other things the Betty ready to ship to
its new home (bittersweet), I came home in the evening and started the build of
my Hubbuhubbuh. By midnight, I had accomplished everything you can see in the
photos, where by the way, you can also see the awesome decals it sports.

Had not trouble anywhere, except on the installation of the rear disc brake,
where the rotor I had chosen rubs the Shimano adapter. If the mount on the
frame was a mm or two more outward, it would have worked perfectly. This is a
hope rotor that has the new isolation or whatever for the disc rotor, probably
total overkill for the tandem, but I had it from another project. A standard
flat rotor won't rub, so I'm getting one of those. No biggie here.

The Silver cranks are totally awesome. I had mixed feelings when I ordered them
based on the photos, but didn't feel like putting it all together from scratch
with Sugino cranes, and the René Herse I love on my single bikes are just too
expensive and unjustifiable at this time. But when I took them out of the box
and installed them, I was blown away. They look fantastic and the guards are
just so cool. You can see them in the photos.

You can also see where I'm planning to place the thumbie for the disc brake, a
place where it's easy to use yet doesn't get in the way of the hand positions.
I'm planning to use barend shifters on the tips of the handlebar so I can
easily shift without potentially compromising the control of the bike, and so I
keep the handlebars free. Over time, I'll see if the preferences change.

The new Bosco treadless handlebar is awesome as you can see. I was planning on
going with Chocos, but I think it'll stay this way, at least for now. I had
already purchased the Nitto high rise stem to use with the Chocos, so when the
new wider sleeved Chocos arrive, I'll get one to have as backup alternative,
just in case.

Had a big family debate regarding the pedal and cabling colors. I think the
cabling will be blue as shown, white turned out to be too bright and out of
context, gray is boring and in most of my bikes anyway, so I was concerned the
blue cables would look too weird, but I think it looks good and my wife and son
liked them. So we'll see when it's all cabled. Got some blue pedals as well,
but they don't match the color of the cables and it's just too much, so they're
going back and will use silver pedals. These Vault pedals are just my favorite.
Wide, grippy, very comfortable.

The saddles are a matching pair of B67 and B67S Select, so I'm hoping my wife
will love it. If necessary at first, I'll add some padded cover. Rides are
going to be very short initially anyway. She's quite nervous about it, but I
told her everything that went wrong would be my fault, and there would be no
pressure to ride on the street until she's absolutely ready for it, however
long it takes.

The Compass 48mm wide tires look awesome and should ride like that as well,
based on how all my other Compass tires ride on my bikes. These, however, are
not the ultra-light, but rather the regular casing version heeding Theo's
advice at Compass tires. Just in case.

The wheels are custom made by Rich using 4-cross (Grant was very impressed) 40
spokes on White Industries hubs. They look amazing!

As much as I would love to finish the build this weekend, I'm still waiting for
the polished Motolites, which hopefully will ship out next week. I'm taking the
fork to have the steerer tube cut, as I don't have the special tool to do the
straight cut and it's not worth getting it as this is not a usual task I do at
home.

Got some special edition set of Carradice tweed roll and Barley bags to put the
finishing touch on the Hubbuhubbuh when I'm done. My wife approved of them when
she saw them, and appreciated the fact that I had sold a number of other bags
during the week, so that was good! Needless to say, had RBW had the SaddleSack
and tube bags in blue to make a matching set, I'd have gone for those!

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

[RBW] A Spring Ride with my Girls

2017-05-06 Thread Wayne Naha

My lovely girls and I went for a nice ride this beautiful spring morning.
There were strong and steady head winds and quartering winds, but my stout
hearted girls did not complain, for there was ice cream waiting for them at
our destination.

Here we are in the famous "missing bicyclist" formation.

I let the girls set the pace all the way there. I told them they would
'beat' me to the store, and this really added to their motivation. (Why do
they have to beat their old man?)

Here we are at the Rodney General Store and gas station, enjoying the
fruits of our labor.

In that I am still doing a low card diet, I did forgo the ice cream. It
was reward enough to be out with my kiddos on this brilliantly beautiful
day. But despite the sun, when the winds blew, it was quite cool, and we
were under-dressed. Could have used a windbreak, but I thought our
activity level would be enough to keep us warm. It didn't. Still, ice
cream fixes most problems.

Traffic was sparse, and thankfully, what traffic there was gave us wide
berth and were very cautious making their way around us. This was our
first foray out onto the highway, and the kids tend to be a little wobbly
in their steering.

Here we are, home and dry.

Despite having just eaten an ice cream cone, both girls were ravenous upon
return, and made themselves large ham sandwiches which they then inhaled.
I was a mite peckish myself, and ate slices of ham and cheese.

It occurs to me that I have said very little about my Clem here, except to
complain about the ghost shifting, which seems parsimonious to me. The
reality is that it is a wonderful bike to ride. It goes just as fast as I
can pedal, and really seems to disappear beneath me. I am just sitting on
the saddle, gliding along with the wind in what's left of my hair. I am
really grateful that Grant and Rivendell decide to put their energies
toward the development of this bicycle that produces such glee when ridden.

[RBW] Re: Tires for Joe Appaloosa

2017-05-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
I ride Barlows on my QB because they are the fattest I can fit. If I had an
Appaloosa and I wasn't going to use it for much technical single track, I'd
go with the fattest Compass tires I could get, which depends on wheel size.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-06 Thread René Sterental
Progress photos:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/albums/72157680299609103/with/34450768136/

After a long day at work getting, among other things the Betty ready to
ship to its new home (bittersweet), I came home in the evening and started
the build of my Hubbuhubbuh. By midnight, I had accomplished everything you
can see in the photos, where by the way, you can also see the awesome
decals it sports.

Had not trouble anywhere, except on the installation of the rear disc
brake, where the rotor I had chosen rubs the Shimano adapter. If the mount
on the frame was a mm or two more outward, it would have worked perfectly.
This is a hope rotor that has the new isolation or whatever for the disc
rotor, probably total overkill for the tandem, but I had it from another
project. A standard flat rotor won't rub, so I'm getting one of those. No
biggie here.

The Silver cranks are totally awesome. I had mixed feelings when I ordered
them based on the photos, but didn't feel like putting it all together from
scratch with Sugino cranes, and the René Herse I love on my single bikes
are just too expensive and unjustifiable at this time. But when I took them
out of the box and installed them, I was blown away. They look fantastic
and the guards are just so cool. You can see them in the photos.

You can also see where I'm planning to place the thumbie for the disc
brake, a place where it's easy to use yet doesn't get in the way of the
hand positions. I'm planning to use barend shifters on the tips of the
handlebar so I can easily shift without potentially compromising the
control of the bike, and so I keep the handlebars free. Over time, I'll see
if the preferences change.

The new Bosco treadless handlebar is awesome as you can see. I was planning
on going with Chocos, but I think it'll stay this way, at least for now. I
had already purchased the Nitto high rise stem to use with the Chocos, so
when the new wider sleeved Chocos arrive, I'll get one to have as backup
alternative, just in case.

Had a big family debate regarding the pedal and cabling colors. I think the
cabling will be blue as shown, white turned out to be too bright and out of
context, gray is boring and in most of my bikes anyway, so I was concerned
the blue cables would look too weird, but I think it looks good and my wife
and son liked them. So we'll see when it's all cabled. Got some blue pedals
as well, but they don't match the color of the cables and it's just too
much, so they're going back and will use silver pedals. These Vault pedals
are just my favorite. Wide, grippy, very comfortable.

The saddles are a matching pair of B67 and B67S Select, so I'm hoping my
wife will love it. If necessary at first, I'll add some padded cover. Rides
are going to be very short initially anyway. She's quite nervous about it,
but I told her everything that went wrong would be my fault, and there
would be no pressure to ride on the street until she's absolutely ready for
it, however long it takes.

The Compass 48mm wide tires look awesome and should ride like that as well,
based on how all my other Compass tires ride on my bikes. These, however,
are not the ultra-light, but rather the regular casing version heeding
Theo's advice at Compass tires. Just in case.

The wheels are custom made by Rich using 4-cross (Grant was very impressed)
40 spokes on White Industries hubs. They look amazing!

As much as I would love to finish the build this weekend, I'm still waiting
for the polished Motolites, which hopefully will ship out next week. I'm
taking the fork to have the steerer tube cut, as I don't have the special
tool to do the straight cut and it's not worth getting it as this is not a
usual task I do at home.

Got some special edition set of Carradice tweed roll and Barley bags to put
the finishing touch on the Hubbuhubbuh when I'm done. My wife approved of
them when she saw them, and appreciated the fact that I had sold a number
of other bags during the week, so that was good! Needless to say, had RBW
had the SaddleSack and tube bags in blue to make a matching set, I'd have
gone for those!

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

I'm running 50mm Big Bens. Feels right to me. I had the 38mm Little Big Bens on

[RBW] Tires for Joe Appaloosa

2017-05-06 Thread Jonathan D.
I was curious what tires folks are running on their Joe Appaloosa. I know the
Compass Barlows are loved
and was wondering what other tires folks were running.
I was considering the 38mm Panaracer Pasela Protite. I don't really do gravel
roads right now and was thinking that could speed up the bike over the stock
Kenda tires.

[RBW] Rosco or Roadini?

2017-05-06 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I was going to ask if it was better to jump on the blue 58 Rosco Bubbe or
wait for the Roadini, but it seems that the 58s are sold out. I was king of
hoping they would put the demo on sale like they did with the green one. Oh
well. I don't have room for another bike anyway ;-)

[RBW] Re: OTT: 10 speed X Wide Low(2x)?

2017-05-06 Thread Nick Payne

I'm using a Sugino XD crank with 38/26 chainrings and an 11-speed chain
(11-40 11s cassette). No problems at all with the chain skating or sticking
between the chainrings. The only crank on which I've had such problems was
when using a 10-speed chain and cassette with TA Cyclotouriste crank and
chainrings, and I fixed that by reducing the thickness of the spacers
between the chainrings to 3mm.

[RBW] Re: regarding orange bikes

2017-05-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yellow everyone. These lovely bikes are making me green with envy, and a
bit blue, which of course will not win me any brownie points. I hope my
purple prose isn't making folks red in the face, but I did want to say that
I had a choice between orange or black when I bought my Clementine, chose
the latter because, well, black is the new orange (and Meisha (sp?) gave
the thumbs up, though it wasn't green). I did have a well-used orange
Centurion Le Mans for a while that I kept in part for its colorway, and I
can learn to love any bike color, as long as it is not too new looking,
though what exactly this means is tinged with shades of gray. Fade to
black. Orange you glad? Tickled pink, I'd guess.

But seriously, we all know that color is a recognized n+1 category.
