[RBW] Re: Even a riv (design) can wobble

2017-05-22 Thread dougP
Wobble (aka "shimmy") is a recurring topic, not only here but on other
forums. I can get my Atlantis to wobble with the right set of conditions.
After following this topic for years, I've come to the conclusion that some
bikes wobble under some riders sometimes. Not everything is predictable
nor correctable. Some riders have never experienced wobble while others
have sold bikes because they couldn't stand the wobble. Stuff happens.

[RBW] Save Bruce Gordon Cycles

2017-05-22 Thread Evan Baird
Cross Post from BOB

Hey Everybody. I spoke with Bruce Gordon again this afternoon and he still
hasn't found a buyer for his shop. My partner Norma and I decided that we
want to try to raise the money to turn BG Cycles into a frame building
school and bike touring museum and open it to the public. I think what
Bruce is asking is an insanely low amount of one of the most respected
names in custom bicycles and I think that he deserves a comfortable
retirement after everything he's done for the American Bike Industry. If
you can't support us directly please help us spread the word about our
crowdfunding campaign. We have about a month to pull this off, after which
Bruce told me he's just going to take his bicycle collection to the
recyclers and scrap the lot. I really believe he intends to do that, and I
would break my heart to see such beautiful and historical bikes get
destroyed.

[RBW] Even a riv (design) can wobble

2017-05-22 Thread Bruce K Jamison
My SOMA San Marcos 59cm has been a great bike. At the end of a long ride
where I was admittedly tired and not riding in the best fashion (no hands,
leaning way back in the saddle), the bike got the dreaded wobble. It went
away quickly. I went over the bike checking the usual suspects, and am
happy to say everything is fine again. But I was really surprised that it
happened at all. The San Marcos is so stable and it’s even a 2X top tube

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2017-05-22 Thread Geeter
Ed, I bought a Hunq and now built the Jones because of my disc issues. I
recently had a microdiscectomy/laminectomy on L5/S1 and I really want to
continue riding all day like I used to. I am considering selling my road
and cross bikes for good because I don't know when or if I will want to be
back on drops. The geo of the two bikes really has me comfortable and I am
hoping that now after surgery I will be back in the saddle, pun intended.

Re: [RBW] Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread dougP
John:

A bicycle is such an amazing device. We consider "only about 30 lbs" to be
a moderate load. What else can easily carry more than it's own weight?

Assuming that the 30 lbs is an occassional load like a lodging tour or an
S24O, and most of the time you're riding unloaded, my suggestion would be
the Supremes ride better than the Green Guards. But for double the money
they should do something.

Those are blinking LEDs on my valve stems. They were practically free, and
they make nice blue circles when I ride. I almost always get home before
dark now so they probably don't do much, but I'm a strong believer in
conspicuity. Anything I can add that costs virtually nothings and weighs
virtually nothing and incrementally increases conspicuity is worth doing.

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I'm talking about their Fender Cushion:
https://www.1up-usa.com/product/fender-cushion/

They don't damage the fenders at all, and the bike is kept quite snug. To
allow for the wide Honjo (650b 62mm) on my custom, I also installed their
Fat Tire adapters, so the fender cushions "float" within the wider adapter,
but it still works very well.

I'll post photos when I get home, during the Memorial Day Weekend.

They sell a roof rack variant, so you could do the same thing, although to
be honest, it may be quite cumbersome to operate on the roof of a car
without a step ladder; don't know for sure, unless the mechanism is
different.

The roof rack I used to use for my fender bikes before, was a Thule rack
that held the bike by the downtube and has apparently now been replaced by
the ProRide model. Since the bike is held by the downtube and the wheels
are tied to the rack, it allows fenders.

Doug, thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I’m sure the Plus Tours would feel awful sluggish to me. I’m not a

[RBW] Butch Bubbe

2017-05-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
It looks like the rains are over now in California. I decided to remove
the fenders from my Rosco Bubbe Road bike, pulled off my 700x35 Compass Bon
Jon Pass tires, and replaced them with 700x43 Bruce Gordon Rock and Roads.
Now my Rosco is all butch and ready to monster cross it, when needed. I
would characterize the clearances as perfect, without fenders. I think
this will be the standard summertime configuration for this bike. When I
ran Rock and Roads on my Hillborne, things cleared, but were awfully close.
 Anyway, enjoy.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread dougP
John:

No, I haven't tried the Green Guards. I have used the Plus Tour. It's
even heavier & tougher. One flat in 6,000 miles on the rear & it was a big
screw. I did notice a big improvement in ride & performance when I went
back to Supremes. I think the Plus Tour is about 2X the weight of the
Supreme.

One of my touring buds uses what is probably the Green Guard. He refers to
them as "regular old Schwalbes, $35 each". He gets few flats & they last a
long time. He does over 12,000 miles per year.

IME, once the bike is loaded up, I don't notice as much difference in
tires. But without a load, I can definitely notice differences in ride
quality & performance such as getting up to speed from a stop.

[RBW] HubbuHubbuH ride report

2017-05-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
Yesterday the El Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Racing Team had their
season-end picnic in Tilden Park in the Berkeley Hills. I brought my
HubbuHubbuH tandem and my mountain bike. I was at the picnic for about
four hours. During about 3.5 of those four hours, there were two high
schoolers joyriding the HubbuHubbuH, always smiling, usually giggling,
never crashing. In a smiles-per-mile 'race', I'd put the HubbuHubbuH up
against any bike made by anyone, ever.

[RBW] Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread Ty Graham
Hi, I'm a first run Atlantis owner (seventeen years, woot!)
I ran ruffy tuffy for a while, then Mara supremes on GP recommendation, then
Jack Brown for many years.
Hated the Mara Supremes. Deadest feeling tire I've ever ridden. No flats, but
what a price to pay!
Jack Brown was pretty good, but there's so much room on Atlantis, why not
something wider.
Simultaneously, I discovered Gran Bois Cypres on my '69 Raleigh. Great feeling
tire for a go fast bike.
When Compass came out with the Barlow Pass 700x38, I was first in line. I love
this tire in both EL and regular trim.
I rode Portland to San Francisco 2 years ago, 900 miles fully loaded on varied
road surfaces. No flats. Not a one.
I'm riding the coast again this year and I plan to stay with the Compass BP.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
Exactly. For me the Barlows on my Quickbeam and Racing Ralphs on my
Hunqapillar are the sweet spot of cushy and thus allowing enough protecting
for the riding I do. I can easily see how riding elsewhere would require a
different choice -- in which case I'd try liquid latex next.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread William Henderson
Agreed. I typically ride at higher pressures (70-80psi) for my commute,
though I'll drop down for gravel rides and other such. I started with the
Soma Supple Vitesse, which are absolutely lovely but just flatted too often
for me. After a few weeks of that, I switched to the Shikoros. The do feel
a bit stiffer, but they are still quite lively. They seem to roll almost on
their own.

Curiously, the Shikoros flatted several times too – at first (including one
flat during the World Naked Bike Ride. Made for pretty awkward pumping).
This may have been terrible luck, but I wonder if the brand new tires were
somehow 'stickier' and tended to pick up glass and other debris. I got two
or three flats in the first two weeks of daily riding, and almost gave up.
I'm glad I persisted: a year and a half later I'm still riding them and I
haven't had a single flat. The tires have worn nicely, plenty of tread left
(according to Ride Report I've put 3.5k miles on them).

Best,
William

[RBW] Re: Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
In my experience, outside a glass or thorn heavy environment, a low
inflation, wide, supple tire is its own flat protection, as the suppleness
allows the tire to compress around sharp rocks etc. I've only gotten pinch
flats (from underinflation) and from riding the tires after the tread was
worn down.

Patrick of the Moore swears by using liquid latex in his tubes to prevent
flats in his goat head infested niche of the world.

There seems to be a wide variety of what works for people (no doubt for a
variety of reasons) on commutes. Experience will be the best teacher. I'd
aim for the plushest ride first and add flat protection if you get a lot of
flats that aren't fixed by proper inflation (which can take a bit to dial
in -- the basic idea is just enough air to prevent pinch flats and tire
rolls in curves).

[RBW] Re: Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
For a Compass tire-ish like ride (plush and smooth, without built in flat
protection) while having knobbies, Thunder Burts (less aggressive lungs,
slightly better on asphalt) and Racing Ralphs (more aggressive lugs, better
in mud, snow, and loose, a bit noisier on asphalt but still quite smooth)
are excellent options. Racing Ralphs are my Hunqa's tire for coming up on
two years now, after a year with Thunder Burts.

It is a discontinued saddle and the same dimensions as the B67 without springs.

[RBW] Re: Comparing HHH tandem to other tandems and to single bikes

2017-05-22 Thread Julian Westerhout
Jim,

We're un-racers as well (even have the patch, which my wife/stoker
initially read as UN (United Nations) Racer, which caused some confusion),
and to date we do not have lots of HHH miles yet, but based upon initial
impressions, the Bilenky (650b x 42, S couplers, drop bar touring setup)
is quicker on paved surfaces. I think that much of that is likely due to
the riding position. The HHH does, by its nature, seem to encourage
dawdling a bit more, which is not a bad thing.

We bought it as an around town bike and for use on unpaved rail/trails like
the KATY trail. I think on unpaved trails the HHH might be faster, if for
no other reason than wider tires and less need to pick a line -- of course,
unpaved riding conditions vary greatly, so

Steve is right about a well-matched strong team being very fast. We're not
super well matched (I'm 6'7, stoker is 5'3", with associated strength
differences). One of the things we really love about tandems is that we can
ride together with neither of us feeling mismatched. Even though I'd not
characterize us as a strong, well-matched team we've been on group rides in
which we pass folks going uphill, and we often pass folks going down. We've
also pulled a line of 10 to 15 cyclists drafting us into a headwind for 20
miles, but that's not our normal m.o.

I have a Clem, an Atlantis, and a Ram in addition to the HHH. I'd say it's
a bit faster than the Clem, a bit slower than the Atlantis, and slower than
the Ram.

Not sure if any of that really answers the "race" questions, as we usually
are not going full out -- except when climbing a long hill/mountain fully
loaded with gear and pulling a trailer, which is a different kettle of fish
altogether...

Re: [RBW] Comparing HHH tandem to other tandems and to single bikes

2017-05-22 Thread Patrick Moore
I once read about track tandems and how they could hit, was it 60 mph at
peak sprint? At any rate, quite a bit faster than track singles which top
out at what, 45?

Now this leads an undisciplined imagination to conceive of a
Hubububwhatever on the track, capt and stoker in baggy seersucker and MUSA
shorts and bolt upright with sit up and beg 70 mm bars, pulling away from
the modern Nelson Vail. Sigh

At the speeds a tandem can achieve (I've had mine up to 65 mph)
aerodynamic resistance is very significant. It would be reasonable to
expect that a tandem designed for upright riding positions of captain
and stoker would be slower at high speed than one set up with drops and
so forth. In my personal experience, at the other end of the speed
spectrum, climbing, it's mostly the team driving the tandem rather than
the bike itself that determines which is faster. I've seen a powerful
team very well in synch together ride away from singles on climbs.

Also, how does HHH cruising speed compare to say, a Sam or a Homer?
Will two riders of the same ability on an HHH beat a rider of the same
ability (as the HHH riders) on a Sam? If so, by a lot?

If a powerful tandem team is putting the pedal to the metal they can
cruise away from any single. The HHH's riding position may compromise
that to some extent, but at ~25 mph it's hard to compete with the power
of two and the wind resistance of 1.5.

[RBW] Re: Dropbar Appaloosa

2017-05-22 Thread Sky Coulter
That'd be cool to see Jonathan. But for me, none of the stack and reach
numbers on a clem would result in a good dropbar fit. Although having said
that, a 60cm bombadil ended up being an ok fit for me with dropbars -- it
was just that the stand over was a bit too high. Having built up the 55
appa, I'm glad I chose it over the 58cm as I think I would have felt the 58
was a bit higher than I'd like as well.

2017-05-22 Thread RichS
Birdman, congratulations on your journey to getting an Atlantis!

I have a three year old 26" wheeled 53cm model. Tires used: Panaracer
Paselas with Tourguard 1.5" for a more roadish feel. Compass 1.75" that
feel sluggish on pavement but are fine on rough surfaces. Majority of my
rides are pavement so my preference is the Paselas with 40-45 lbs of air.

Enjoy the anticipation!

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I think the choice of the rack depends on whether you mind/don't mind the
rack attachments to touch your frame. If you don't, then the 1UP is the
best choice (only choice) for fendered bikes and with metal fenders
(haven't tested on plastic) their little covers hold the bike very solidly
even though you are clamping over the rear fender. I've driven hours on the
freeway with my fendered bike(s) on the 1UP with no issues at all.

If you don't mind the bike being held by the frame + tires, then any of the
tray + top tube racks work. Saris, Thule and Yakima offer variations on the
theme.

IMO, the one huge practical advantage of the single 1UP (you can manually
add up to three racks for those occasions, is that as I stated, I can leave
it permanently attached to the rear of the car and don't need to be
folding/unfolding it every time I need to put something in the back. Since
most of the time I'm just taking my bike somewhere for a ride, and it's
only on special occasions that I drive more people/bikes, this works
stupendously for me. And, as stated, the 60 Cheviot fits perfectly.

2. Saris Freedom 2 or 4. This is the only rack I've found which can securely
hold my bikes and not damage the fenders. It also fits our 60cm Cheviot. I've
taken this rack and my Rivs on multiple cross country trips and never worry
about the bikes.

3. I currently have Soma C-lines, 38c, on the Chev which gives plenty of
fender clearance but have also run Marathon Supremes, 42c, without an issue. I
have 44c Soma Shikoros on my Sam Hillborne with fenders but there is very
little clearance between the tire and fender.

You're going to love your Atlantis!

I'm running a set of Compass Snoqualmie Pass (44mm) on Atlas rims. They're
nice and zippy, and really plush--a good transition if you're accustomed to
riding 32mm tires. I like them a lot more than Schwalbe Big Bens. People
say they have flat issues with them, but I've had only one (caused by a
roofing nail) in a few months.

[RBW] Re: Dropbar Appaloosa

2017-05-22 Thread Bob Lovejoy
It worked! Both bikes are beautiful and the 55 Appaloosa really worked
well. Not that I have previously held to the guidelines, but there is a
pretty good argument,, especially these days, that two bikes can cover 98%
of the riding we are likely to do. And these two are perfect examples.
 Good eye and good choices!

And thanks for including the superimposed picture. That is a great
comparison.

Congratulations on the new bike and build!

Here's to great rides, exploring and adventures this year,

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I'm using the 1up rack with no issues on my 60cm Cheviot with the 44mm
Compass tires and 51mm Honjo fenders.

I bought the 1up Super Duty 2" single carrier + 1 bike extension which
allows me to leave it permanently on my Highlander and doesn't interfere
with opening the rear hatch when folded up. I add the second one only when
necessary.

Haven't measured the exact wheelbase, can do it when I go home on Friday
(traveling on business this week) but haven't had any issues. There are
some tips I can give you on positioning the bike with the fenders, but
they're very easy to figure out.

Those who've used wider tires can only fit them with plastic fenders, that
have less wraparound coverage in terms of width.

With Honjo, the ideal tire is the 38mm for perfect safe clearance, but for
city riding, you can get away with the 44mm tires comfortably. If you check
my photos, you can see it clearly. You do need to go with wider centerpull
brakes. https://flic.kr/p/N3JTfB
