[RBW] Re: Long Time Coming....

2017-06-29 Thread Kiley DeMond
Oh, that is just the tip of the story! I went through a Raleigh RX 1.0,
Trek Pilot 5.0 WSD (great fit, but skinny tire road bike), a Jamis Coda
Elite, Terry Valkyrie, Workcycles Secret Service. I wanted a 'girl' bike
after years (heck, my whole life) on men's bikes due to being 5'10" and a
PBH of 91.5, further complicated by a 'normal' torso and arms, and
longer-than-average femurs. Nothing fit. I used to play "stump the bike
store" and watch them scramble (and lie) trying to get a bike to fit me.
That's why I swapped out the handlebars on the Cheviot, even the Albatross'
were just a little too short to sit comfortably upright given the femur
length/arm length opposing measurements. And after a couple of black bikes,
I had a "no black" edict, and other the tires (which I considered swapping
for gray), there is no black on this bike!

[RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-06-29 Thread Mitch Harris
+1 Also have the Spurcycle bell on several bikes, with a special mod to
mount it to a stem's M5 bell mount.
I like the sound, pitch, sustain, low profile, design and quality.
On a recent MUP ride with my wife I we compared the Spurcycle and a brass
Crane bell from Riv, and alternated, to see if there was a difference in
how people responded or how the bell sounded to us. We rode ahead
separately to see if we could hear one better than the other. We had good
results with both, couldn't tell a difference (in our non-empirical test)
in how people responded to the bells. We thought we could hear the
Spurcycle from further away but that might have been sustain/duration.
Haven't tried it with a tuner to see what the actual pitch is, but it only
seems an octave or so above the Crane, and that doesn't seem like enough of
a pitch difference to pass out of hearing range for most people. There are
lots of higher freq overtones in bell sounds so I imagine some of those are
less audible for some people, but that would be true for all bells.

[RBW] Re: Long Time Coming....

2017-06-29 Thread Kiley DeMond
Thanks! The picture is taken just across the road where I live on Willow
Lake Road in Prescott, AZ. I lived in the Bay Area for decades, moved to
AZ, then spent a year in Ann Arbor, MI (where Heidi was delivered), and am
finally back to AZ. There are so many trails and great places to ride — all
uncrowded. I never had the chops to ride trails before due to twitchy
bikes. This bike is downright magical.

following: one Soma Portola dirt drop handlebar 53 cm. It has the usual
tape adhesive residue and some light scratches from mounting the brake
levers. There is one deeper indentation from where the brake clamp bolt
apparently inscribed itself on the handlebar. The bars have never been
wrecked or bent. Asking $35.00 shipped CONUS. Also, offering a cockpit

shifters from Rivendell. Bars are wrapped in gray Serfas cotton tape with

[RBW] Re: My Purple Glorious was Stolen

2017-06-29 Thread Evan E.
Fantastic news! Terrific team effort.

While we're on the subject of bike theft, please keep a look out for my
Rivish Austro-Daimler Superleicht (picture attached). Stolen from my garage
(yes, it was locked, but even a stout cable lock is no match for bolt
cutters) in North Beach, San Francisco, on June 19th. The bike was
registered at BikeIndex.org, and I filed a police report and posted a
"stolen!" notice on Craigslist. What I need now is for Brad, Andy, Will,
Chalida, TR, and every other Bay Area lister to search everywhere. Hey, you
never know. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: My Purple Glorious was Stolen

2017-06-29 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Stellar! It makes me frickin' happy that you got your bike back! I really
hate bike thieves. I caught some before (they punched my kid, and stole his
bike) and the rush of revenge when I leapt off my bike at fifteen mph and
tackled the teen that was riding it, was very primal and shocking. Notice:
DON'T MESS WITH MY KID. When the cops came, I was sure I was going to jail.
I tackled a fifteen year old and slid to a stop holding his face down on
the pavement. The cops just smiled after I explained the kids injuries,
and said, "You don't have to stress, I see no problem here. You just busted
the bike theft gang." The kid was in a group of about ten when I tackled
him. I jumped up, screaming, "Steal my kids bike you F&%$?!! I'll take you
all out!" I was skinned and bleeding and in a primal rage. Four of the
kids dropped their bikes and started running away. I immediately knew the
bikes were stolen. I yelled as loud and as crazy sounding as I could.
"Stop or else!" To my surprise, they stopped. By pure intensity and
threats, I controlled all ten 'kids' and walked them the block to a
supermarket where the employees called the cops. A week later, I get a
call from the kids mom. She begged and pleaded with me to drop the charges
and I refused. She then turned to threats and told me that the kids father
was in prison for murder and his uncle, who was in prison for armed robbery
would be getting out soon. I laughed and said, "Bring it. I'll be
waiting..and armed." That was the last I ever dealt with bike thieves.
Sorry about your face kid, but I hoped you learned a lesson. I ALWAYS
(except bikepacking) use a high rated U-lock and never leave my bike out of
the public eye. I have pitlocks on my wheels and seat. A friend recently
had his bike, that was locked to his bike rack on his car with a cable
lock, stolen. Cable locks are worthless. They can be cut quickly and easily
with a small set of bolt cutters that can be hidden under a shirt. Here in
Bend, we have a rash of bike thefts from time to time. Usually from the
back or top of vehicles that are secured with a cable lock. The tourists
make it too easy.

Hey, BellBOBs:

Indeed, you are correct sir -- SPUR CYCLE bells are the Campy Nuovo Record

We bought our first one on the Kickstarter program several years ago and

Like the little wrens at our bird feeders, you simply can't believe such a

[RBW] Re: Custom fork builder suggestion

2017-06-29 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Are there other specifics--ie, rake, rack mounts, etc? I ask because I've
purchased used forks for projects with good success. Depending on your
steerer tube length requirement, I may even have one shortly. Much cheaper
route. Otherwise, I think you will probably be looking at $250 bare
minimum, and up from there. Tom Matchak has done a number of custom forks,
if I recall. Jeff Lyon as well, though I think mostly batch jobs. With
forks, I would make certain of the builder's experience level before
worrying about price.

Right now nothing on eBay with a fork crown like you want, but there is
this, if you need a longish one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-mountain-frame-single-speed-mountain-bike-frame-/192227450794?hash=item2cc1a61faa:g:YDYAAOSw3h1ZTrph

If you need rack mounts, you can have a builder put them exactly where you
want--could probably even re-rake it.

I got lucky with my 26" project. I had a NOS Riv 700c fork, unpainted. Just
moved the canti posts, and now has tons of clearance for fat 26" tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-06-29 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
They are the best selling bell in our shop and also the most
expensivetwo things that rarely go together in the same category. The
design and execution is next-level AND the company operates in a
professional and courteous manner (somewhat of a rarity these days).

I have one of the original Lionworks bells that my wife bought for me when
we first started dating. They were engraved pretty deep originally, as
opposed to etched. I wish they didn't make that changethe original
engraving gave it a heritage quality. One of my favorite bike related
gifts
