[RBW] Re: Need new shoes

2017-07-05 Thread Mitch Harris
Patrick, do I remember correctly you used to pedal barefoot during your
feet strengthening time? Do you still? Do you have any pedal suggestion for
barefoot riding? I remember enjoying barefoot riding for a long time in my
childhood using the rubber sided pedals common on consumer bikes back then.
There might be a safety issue riding barefoot (thinking like a motorcyclist
here) but I'd like to try it again.

+2 on the Giro Republic. My wife with very sensitive choosey feet has said
her Giro Republic are the best she's felt. She uses Frogs too.

I use Dromartis and Vittoria 1976, both with slot cleats, clips, and
straps.

Re: [RBW] QUESTION: Rat Trap Pass

2017-07-05 Thread iamkeith
Yeah, Mark - i think you want you let air out, not add it!

I just took mine off my all rounder and went back to the original 1.75 compass
tires because it was so tedious to tune the bounce out. But, in my case, it
was the rim's fault - not the tire's.

Normally, the way to get a high-volume, supple tire adjusted properly is to
pump until it just starts to get bouncy, and then let a bit of air out. The
smaller the casing, the more forgiving and bigger the acceptable range of
pressures.

So, for instance, A 4.5" fat bike tire (on dry, summer trails) will have to be
within about 1/2 psi of optimum, in order to both steer properly at one end,
and to not bounce you around like a pogo stick at the other.

A 2.75 - 3" plus-sized tire might have a range of 1 1/2 to 2 psi that works
and, usually, the lowest you can go without getting pinch flats is the best
within that range. There is negligible if any efficiency gain from adding air
beyond that, but there is noticable degredation of traction and comfort for
every psi over the minimum needed.

Following these, the 2.3" RTP SHOULD have a workable range of maybe 3 psi or
so, for any given load? But the caveat is that this would require a rim that
is of adequate width to support the tire. I didn't have that with my 519
mavics, so i had to be very careful not to let it get so low that the tire
would roll off the rim. Unfortunately, at that point, it was too easy to make
it start bouncing.

When i did run them at proper, low pressures, they were sublime - but i was
always nervous about cornering, and rolling a bead.

For me, at 200lbs, i think something like 23 rear / 19 front would be ideal.
(As noted, i mostly did/do it by feel) BUT... that would be with a well-matched
rim of at least 25-30 mm inside dimension. The wider the rim, the lower you
can go.

On the other hand, the smoother and more featureless the riding surface, the
higher the pressure you can get away with, without feeling the bounce or
realizing you're over inflated. But that doesn't mean it's optimum, and i dont
think there's an efficiency or tread longevity benefit to having more pressure.

I get what feels like bounce feedback when the pressure is too low. Maybe
what I'm calling bounce is really...squish? I think I know what they mean,
the kind of bounce when the tire is overinflated, but I only pumped them
that high to seat initially. I will try a little ride with 50 psi for the
sake of science. (Re: photo. Thank you.)

patrick, compass tires require a bit more psi IME than schwalbe tires

[RBW] Re: Road Rash (no pictures)

2017-07-05 Thread Ian A
Hello Jay,

Hope the rash heals quickly. Slap some pure Aloe Vera on it if you have
some.

I stocked-up on Vittoria Hyper when Planet X had them on sale, but sold on
the unused ones and retired the used ones because of having incidents
exactly like you describe. I had a number of slips, most of which I was
able to save, when there was any hint of moisture or wet mud on the tires.
The final straw was when I slipped out at walking speed and landed on my
face, requiring stitches. There was a hint of ice on the road, but except
for Kojaks (which are nowhere near as unpredictable), I've never had a tire
so prone to slip on anything but perfectly dry conditions.

I sold the Hypers with the information that I was selling them because of
losing traction and that I no longer trusted the tire.

Your description of the slightly damp front tire slipping out in
not-too-aggressive cornering sounds to me entirely typical of these tires.
In Argentina I was buying 700 x 35 actual width Camel brand tires for $8 or
$9 a piece that had far better grip and handling than the Hypers. Those sub
$10 Camels stayed upright through corners, no matter how wet, or worn for
that matter.

It's s pretty! We're about the same size and I'm tempted to call Roland up
and say, "Just make it like Addison's!" Does it still count as a custom if it
copies someone else's custom? ;-)

Digital gauge for bike tires -- forget make, but said to be accurate to a
fraction of a lb per sq inch. I weigh 175.

I'm not disagreeing, just wondering why RTPs need such high pressure when
at least one considerably lighter tire needs considerably less,

That is a beauty!

Is the AR on the chopping block?

All you need are some red-anodized Nitto barend plugs...to match the red
cable caps (or whatever you call those things you cap cable with)
...seriously, that is certainly one of the prettiest road bikes I've seen
in a long time.

Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] Re: My new Della Santa

2017-07-05 Thread Hugh Smitham
You know Addison I think I need to add a couple of thoughts here regarding
one bike to rule them all theme. I'm with you on the notion of pairing down
for sure, the more n+1 the more maintenance and clutter. But more important
is the clutter and whether the bikes in the stable are ideal for the
terrain you ride, essentially do you ride the bikes you have? This topic
has popped up time and time again on the list so I'm adding nothing really
new here other than my perspective after years of riding. I'm in the
process of shedding bikes and consolidating too, basically I think there is
no bike that does all things well. I'm moving into the realm of n+1 with
specific use intended rigs. Your Della Santa hits one of those specific
uses I'm after a spirited road bike capable of hitting some dirt.
Personally I want something with fatter tires. For just getting out and
doing a fitness ride before work I always grab my 1984 Trek 660 with campy
Veloce build running 28mm (here I wish I could run 35mm) and I love it. The
next bike will be built around a 650b x 48mm.

On the pictures, I loved all the pictures that's what we bike nerds want to
see right! Lot's of pictures to Oogle at. Thanks for the post.

2017-07-05 Thread Max S
Those B356 M bars look great! I'm VERY interested in those to use on my
Trek 400 commuter / dirt / toodle-arounder.

Here's another idea: get a longer DirtDrop stem and mount some "North
Road" style bars upside down... kinda like
this: http://bikejerksmpls.blogspot.com/2009/11/ibis-scorcher_7440.html

I found that the upside-down "North Road" style bar even lets me fit road
brake levers.

Or, Jitensha Bar: https://www.jitensha.com/eng/flatbar05.html
(these also work with road levers in a pinch, but may be more comfortable
with MTB levers – just have to make sure it's a 23.8 mm clamp diameter)...

[RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-07-05 Thread Ruben Flores
I am going to throw in one more factor into this discussion (or at least I
did not notice it in previous posts). On occasion I ride with a very
experienced (past national champion) nearing 80 years old. He said as he
has aged his hand strength has weakened and he must brake sooner into
downhill corners. With discs he can return to his "normal" braking points
and over all is not as fatigued in his hands and wrists. I am not saying
yay or nay, just describing a specific situation.

Re: [RBW] QUESTION: Rat Trap Pass

2017-07-05 Thread Patrick Moore
30 to 40 seems high for a 50+ mm tire. I run my 50 mm labeled/51 actual
Furious Freds (tubeless) at about 23-24/26-27 for a mix of pavement, sand
(up to 3"), and roots and small rocks, and that seems firm.

Note that the F Freds are considerably lighter (360 grams consistently, at
least the 3 or 4 I've weighed) than the RTPs, too (and the FFs are 700C
tires).

And even 23 seems high compared to the 15/18 and as low as 12 in front that
I used in 60 mm Big Apple Liteskins, though these had tubes. Same
conditions, though man! 15/18 psi was wonderful in sand! The FFs require
more pressure to prevent sidewall flop.

How do you (plural( decide what pressure to choose?

Re: [RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-07-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Very interesting. So, upshot, at least per Mitch's experience: if you have
sufficiently wide tires, the discs, at least hydraulics, can stop easier --
and "better" in this sense -- on road bikes with aluminum rims by requiring
less concentration and "technique" in hard slowdowns at high speed. I
wonder at which tire width this becomes significant? Probably at not much
under 40 mm?

Circumstances / excuses and other pertinant infomation:

   - 2 seconds before a cop car passed me closer than I thought reasonable.
So I was annoyed and distracted.
   - I seem to remember that cornering isn't the strongest point of
the Victoria Hypers I have on for the summer. Hasn't been an issue before
so I may be wrong about that.
   - Front tire was wet from riding through an oil or water stain on the
   road going into the turn
   - As mentioned, too fast

Results / consequences:

   - Bad road rash on right forearm, bruised right hip
   - Took a few minutes to get myself together and focused enough to
   continue on
   - Handlebar and headlight required straightning. I had the tools and was
   doing it when ...
   - A friend I hadn't seen in a long time walked past with her 5th
grade(?) daughter. She was showing her daughter how to take the bus to the
   local pool and surprise!
   - Made it the rest of the way to work slowly, showered and treated the
wound. All is well so far.

Careful out there!

Jay
