By the way are you sure it is a 64? Sure looks like 62 to me, which might
make it interesting to a few more folks.

cheers,

[RBW] QUESTION: Rat Trap Pass

2017-07-06 Thread Rod Holland
I should have mentioned that the 30/35 PSI is with a 240lb rider. The Rat Trap
Extralights are mounted on Sun Rhyno Lite rims. That choice of pressures is
based on what had worked for me with a pair of 2.15" Schwalbe Big Bens. When I
tried the same pressures on the RTPs, they just seemed to work.

[RBW] Warm weather bike clothing, long sleeved

2017-07-06 Thread William deRosset
Linen. Long sleeve buttondown. Open weave, enough sun protection, and supremely
comfortable in the heat. Natural or white is coolest, but a French blue looks
pretty snappy too and won't show dirt as much.

All the flappy airflow of a burnouse as long as you do not need pockets and do
not tuck it in.

https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/product/men-premium-linen-long-sleeve-shirt-183593COL00SMA002000.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwv_fKBRCG8a3ao-OQuZ8BEiQAvpHp6CCoUla2DCWR2yD2TRErxoAE5ngKUMp_Fah1ZFkB9UEaArF88P8HAQ

Is a very inexpensive source. Not musa.

Other ideas: snap button cowboy shirts, guayabera shirts, and the other options
already presented. If you can live with long-ish sleeves, a Reyn Spooner
Hawaiian shirt is an excellent choice as well.

[RBW] For Sale: Paul touring canti's in silver

2017-07-06 Thread Mark Reimer
For Sale:

A pair of Paul Components touring canti brakes.

Brakes are 1 year old. I sold the bike and got a disc frame, so these
aren't needed anymore.

Comes with a straddle cable and kool stop pads, but the pads are probably
75% worn. Lots of life if you live somewhere flat like me, but if you're in
the mountains you should replace them shortly.

I've got the canti boss bushings and all bolts included as well of course.
The only thing NOT included is the little straddle cable grabber, I can't
remember what they're called, but like a Paul Moon Unit. I've been using
one from an old set of Mafac Raid's and I'd like to hold onto it.

$100 USD, plus shipping. I'm in Canada so shipping won't be $5, but it
won't be much more as these are small and light.

You won't be sorry. The Clem is incredible. Once you get it dialed in,
there just isn't anything like it in my humble opinion. I added Compass

perfect wheel/tire. I think Grant made an extra effort to compensate for
the value engineering. He put a little extra something into the
Clem. You'll see.

No question, long sleeve seersucker cotton in light colors. As also noted,
throw a light wool shirt underneath it and you can cover a very wide range

[RBW] Re: Shipping to U.K.

2017-07-06 Thread Ian A
Absolute best thing is to take them as accompanied baggage. Shipping
through a courier service will be costly and the bikes are probably
(although maybe not?) over-dimension for USPS. Receiving complications in
the UK (customs clearance, local delivery, handling fees) make it an
unattractive option.

I flew from Argentina to Canada with my bike fully built, just sort of
wrapped in plastic. I think I paid US$50.

If you do bring the bikes with you on the plane, try to find a direct
flight and be careful not to mix airlines (for example Delta + KLM),
because each airline has its own rules and prices for bikes and you can, if
unlucky, end up paying for each leg of the journey.

[RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-07-06 Thread masmojo
Bill, like you I have a box of old parts, but I am old and the pile is starting
to dwindle. If I don't have the right stem I can go get on the internet, ebay
or whatevewhatever. The problem is I have a box of 20+ 1 1/8" stems that I
could cull from for just about any other build I do! So, it's a bit annoying to
go back to the well for a stem when could've just pulled one from the wood
pile.
True, if your Jones truss fork goes down, you will need to get one built OR you
could just replace it with a fork you have around if the steerer is long
enough. Point is the Jones forks use a rather mundane 1 1/8" threadless
steerer, a 1" steerer is getting to the point of being proprietary.

Another log on the fire & it's all for naught, because no one here is racing;
regarding disc brakes; although they are heavier, (as some have pointed out)
the rim can be lighter and that weight is shifted to the hub area where it has
less effect on acceleration & deceleration. Additionally, the mechanism is low
on the frame & fork which lowers the center of gravity. Not taking sides one
whether one is better then the other technically, but I no longer avoid disc
brakes as I once did & I have disc brake bikes that are 10 years old, they are
far beyond a new fangled contrivance. Lastly, any future advancements will be
in disc brakes (not Cantis, caliper or V brakes) which will only solidify their
ubiquitousness.

I forgot to put my weight on my response. I weigh 147 lbs. and run my
pressure at 24-28 psi (in general). There are so many factors to consider
when deciding on a tire pressure. How bad is the riding surface do you ride
on? How aggressive are you in corners? (Don't want to roll the tire off the
rim) What kind of ride feel do you prefer? How much do you weigh? 25 psi
is as low as I can go and still have some confidence I won't roll the tire
off. When riding in dirt, I run around 20psi. If I had wider rims, I'd run
lower air pressure.

And Keith's remark on rim width reminds me of something very pertinent;
mine measure IIRC about 27 mm inside. Narrower rims of course would require
more pressure, especially with such thin sidewalls as on the RTP and F Fred.

On these tires, yes. It's actually 23 to 28, and that's front versus rear.

I consider this the best pressure range for sidewall support and cushioning
on combined dirt and pavement; if I rode dirt exclusively, I'd probably
drop the pressure a few psi -- indeed, perhaps 20 f and 23 rear. If I rode
these only on smooth pavement - but I wouldn't -- I'd see no reason to run
them higher. The tires don't bounce or feel squishy.

Long sleeve skin tight surfers rashguard tops. I tried all the common fibers
and for heat and especially with humidity these offer supreme evpaorative
cooling in the breeze and dry very quickly. By skin tight I mean it, like a
second skin you peel off. Amazing. I sweat very easily and heavily too. I hand
wash the top when I get home. I also wear short sleeve shirt on top, the
thinnest for the hottest and thicker if milder heat.

[RBW] Re: (GIF) Don't know how this can be explained

2017-07-06 Thread Larry Charlton
Which is why the fastest riders are on recumbents. I can no longer manage
a recumbent because western PA hills don't align with a bike who's saddle
can be climbed out of -- and I'm too old and out-of-shape to spin fast
enough to maintain speed. Mashing on pedals and old knees don't get
along. That said, when I was riding a recumbent I was considerably faster
on the flats and downhill with far less effort. I'm taking my time, now.

[RBW] Re: Road Rash (no pictures)

2017-07-06 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Thanks Ian. They're coming off.
I've got a pair of Compass tires waiting for me in NH.

[RBW] Re: Need new shoes

2017-07-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey Mitch. This may deserve it's own thread to avoid hijacking Michael's,
so if there will be some back and forth, perhaps start it?

I'd already been barefoot for three years when I began biking again, and
being as close to barefoot as possible is part of what makes it possible
for me to ride with vertigo. yes, I rode barefoot for several years. I
switched to wearing sandals
(these: https://xeroshoes.com/shop/feeltrue-products/ztrek-men/) because on
single track my toes would catch rocks or roots. Sandals hold them up just
enough. They're pretty close to barefoot and they allow for spikes on both
sides of the pedals (VP Vice san spikes are hands down the best barefoot
pedal I've used).

A few tips: I ride with a mid-foot pedal position, which you can see well
here: http://thegrid.ai/withabandon/columbine), and it requires a lower
saddle; safety is the reason I now wear sandals as I mentioned, but if I
didn't ride single track I'd be just fine barefoot on paved and dirt roads,
and prefer it it. Because of increased foot feel, plenty of grip barefoot
on the pedal, but that requires the foot wrapping around the pedal a wee
bit and that leads to rock and root snake bites. For me, temps cooler than
45 I need full coverage on my feet because of wind and wet, especially at
downhill speeds. Boiled wool socks
(https://www.sweaterchalet.com/dachstein-woolwear/dw-5115-adult-socks/#cc-m-product-11653655331)

are what I wear in colder temps, either with sandals or with my minimalist
winter boots
(https://otzshoes.com/collections/men/products/brogan-vibram-leather-mens-camel
I remove the cork footbed, which makes room for the socks. with ventile
gaters this system works down to -20˚F).

With abandon,
Patrick
