[RBW] Re: UnRacer community in SLC?
SLC has a very underrated cycling scene. Sure, there are plenty of Tour of Utah types, but I miss living at the south end of Salt Lake County, honestly. I helped direct the Provo branch of the Bicycle Collective while in my undergrad studies. I loved it there. My dearest friends -- many Riv/Bridgestone types all were from the Collective. Most of us have moved to the coasts now Every Monday night in Provo there is a very unRacer style ride. It usually involves a slow pace up a nearby canyon or on country roads out to the mountains on the west side of Utah Lake. Salt Lake has the 999 ride that had a Hilsen and Hunqapillar present the last time I rode with the group (Oct 2017). We rode up City Creek Canyon, shared some beverages, then a smaller group of us stuck around and rode for Tacos near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Saturday Cycles is the only traditional LBS I am aware of that will meet what you're looking for. However, I have friends who work a Bingham Cyclery as managers/mechanics who are Riv folk. The Big S customers just help more to pay the bills, I suppose? You definitely need to visit Saturday Cycles off 600 North. They can get you in touch with the UnRacer activites happening in SLC. Provo and SLC have very good bike collectives that are fun to visit. I like taking the train up and ride around the city, catch lunch in sugarhouse, stop at Trader Joe's and head home. If you live in the city, you can take the train down the Lehi and then get on the Murdoch canal trail and ride it all the way up Provo Canyon... very nice ride. [RBW] Re: Clicking Brooks sprung saddle question
If memory serves, my Brooks Flyer has two pairs of rails, leading from the top and bottom of each spring to the nose of the saddle. I want to remember that they come close to touching near the nose, and in my case, rubbed against one another while pedaling. I wiped some bearing grease on the rails in those places places and it went away. My memory could be faulty, but if you see rub marks on the rails near the nose, that's where I'd put a little bit of grease. [RBW] Re: Clicking Brooks sprung saddle question
Sounds like two metal parts are passing each other. Try lubing up around the tension bolt in the front. Could also be where the springs end/begin, but careful what you use there--I've had the spring bolt start to unwind if things are made too slippery. Might want to try a combo of loctite and some grease. As others have said though, unless you get real lucky, squeaks and creaks and clicks will appear and disappear with sprung saddles. With the big sprung VO on my Clementine, I look at it as an audio component contributing to the overall vibe. A good portion of this ride is on beautiful dirt roads, including Lane Gate, Indian Brook, Old Albany Post, Long Hill, Old Forge, parts of Wiccoppee, and East Mountain South (the up part in this direction.) [RBW] Re: NYC Century on Cheviot
Awesome. One hundred miles is a lot to do without "training," but as you have shown, it's not impossible! And by making the mental shift from "training" to "just riding" your attention stays completely on the ride at hand. My experience has been that if most of your riding is "training" for some event in the future, it can get a little tyrannical. In terms of the braking, one possibility is you picked up something on your rims that decreased effectiveness. Re: air pressure. Not sure what size Compass you are running, but even at 200 plus, 60 psi is probably way overkill if they are Switchbacks (48mm). If they were rideable at 25, I would say try another 10-15 in back and 5-10 in front. Too much pressure and you lose some of the major benefits of wide rubber. There is lots of great riding up the Hudson River a bit. Beacon is just over an hour from Grand Central on the train. The stop just before is Cold Spring, with easy access to miles and miles of great dirt roads. PM me if you'd like a route suggestion or two. Congrats! I drove up to the Botanical Gardens with my wife's family on Sunday, and saw a good number of Century riders. I spotted two Hillbornes, and I *think* I saw a Road custom. Looked like a blast. The crowds have kept me away, but every year, I regret not doing it. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB 54 Rambouillet
650b brake setup: Tektro R559 sidepulls with Kool-Stop Thinline pads with Grand Bois 32 hole rims just barely reach on 650b. Synergy rims add a much needed extra mm of braking surface. 700c brake setup: I had Tektro R539's with A23 rims. Perfect brake reach for 700c. Lug lining: Original owner had a pro custom car/motorcycle(?) painter do it. Nice report!! Congrats!! No training! Thats how its supposed to be. Commutin' should count for something! I dont like training either. Just riding for fun. How many days a week do you commute? How many miles each commute? Week? I mostly seem to be in back on centuries. The last guy to finish. The later rest stops closing as I arrive. Everyone passes me.
