2017-10-17 Thread Ben Miller
Thanks Bill. I did fender it for awhile, but some time during the drought they
came off and never went back on. I do prefer it fenderless. With all these
fires I'd happily fender back up if it brought the rain though :/

Definitely ORRG on Tam. The Homer tackles that no problem. Lots of fun fire
roads up there in Marin. Bolinas Ridge, Blythsdale Ridge, and Old Vee are some
of my favorite. I've been wanting to ride Pine Mt Fire Rd, but haven't yet.
Have you been out there?

I've owned a 48 and 52 XO-1, and 52 final year XO-3 (no tusk '92). They're
interesting knock-around-town bikes, but my various Rivs were better bicycles.
I still want a tusk XO for sentimental reasons and 'cause I like the way the
stock bikes looked, but I'll probably never find one at a price I'm willing to
pay. That's ok.

Re: [RBW] Re: 60cm Rambouillet

2017-10-17 Thread James Warren
But Rams only came in even sizes at 60 cm and above (and probably with smaller ones too.)The reason I bring this up is that since the seller is saying "61", it's possible they are measuring center-to-center. If that were true, it would be an approximate measurement, and the frame would actually be 62 cm in the way that Rivendell measures. But there were no 61 cm Rams measured center-to-top.-Jim W.-Original Message-

Re: [RBW] Re: XO-1 frame for sale

2017-10-17 Thread Patrick Moore
Joe: I owned a '92, and built and rode it in several configurations.* Don't
spend a great deal of money on one. As in my immediately earlier post, any
number of later, Rivendell-branded models are better than the XO-1.

I'm not saying the XO-1 was a bad bike, but it was a first attempt at what,
later, became much better.

Now, if you collect frames like some people collect stamps, then yes, the
XO-1 deserves a pedestal for being an early '90s attempt at an all
rounder/country bike-type design. But for road riding, gravel road riding,
touring, urban commuting, what have you, the XO-1 has been surpassed long
since.

*One build, which I recall fondly, was as my gofast: 28/38/48 Topline
Superlight triple, 12-19 7 speed cassette, road f and r derailleurs,
Cinelli Giro d'Italia 26.4 squeezed into T-Bone upjutter 25.4 (or did this
build have a custom Salsa?), very, very light sun M14A 559, 19 mm rims in
anodized purple with 8-speed Ultegra hubs, Revolution spokes, very nice
Specialized Turbo 559 X 22 tires (if these had been 1 cm larger, I'd still
be riding them), Syncros ti sp, original issue Flite (still love 'em),
Speedplay X-1 pedals, 7402 Dura Ace levers pulling some high end, normal
reach, cold forged, silver only calipers, and -- get this --
GripShift-for-drop-bar shifters, big clunky grippers that fit onto the tail
end of your drop bar -- all plastic clicky bits.

This bike had the kudos of hitting 48 mph at the bottom of a hill in a 48 X
12 X 24" tire (96" gear) while chasing an errant Range Rover -- 170 rpm!

Re: [RBW] Re: XO-1 frame for sale

2017-10-17 Thread Patrick Moore
The prices asked, perhaps paid, for XO-1s must be purely the reasult of a
collectors' mentality, since the frames themselves are not exceptional
compared to what Grant made later on. Compared to the Atlantis, even the
Sam Hillborne, and even to the original Rivendell All Rounder, the XO-1 is
a low budget, nice but not exceptional, first foray into the world of a 26"
wheel "country bike." "Holy Grail" for name/model collectors, but not
compared to the much better frames that followed it.

Patrick "ask me how I know" Moore, who'll tell you without being asked: I
owned a '92 XO-1, then asked Grant to build me a 26" wheel road custom that
was "better" than the XO-1, and based on the All Rounder, but roadified;
this was head, shoulders, and waist above the XO-1; and then he built me 2
more that were in turn huge levels above the first custom which, itself,
was considerably better than the XO-1. And this doesn't even take into
account the Atlantis, the Sam Hill, and the other models which followed;
the Atlantis (from hearsay) and the Sam Hill (from experience) are both,
also, better than the XO-1.

Dear Tony,

The M65 is the duck tail model--the one issued with the extreme cold
equipment (I got to spend three winters in the thing professionally)? If
so, no--a ventile jacket of the same construction will not be less bulky
nor dry faster.

In general the greenspot was a less bulky jacket than the Braemar in
analogy (the Foinaven is similar), but nobody is going to mistake it for a
compact jacket if compared to a W/B synthetic one, and it won't be
especially quick to dry if packed. Like Patrick, I tend to take things off
underneath of the jacket rather than stow it

You can rationalize the price however you want. It only takes a couple of
people willing to pay the price, who bid against each other and aren't
going to sweat $2-3 hundred over what might be fair and reasonable.

I've been there. You want the bike not the money.

How much is a used Atlantis?

I have a Trek MT60 kids bike that is ready for hand-me-down. I don't have
any toddler age kids in my aging local sphere of influence, so I'm casting
a wider net. My son and daughter both used this bike a bit, but their
riding was seriously hindered by the fact that we live on the top of a
steep hill, so it's going to be a good rider for several more kids before
it is worn out.

It's a small 20" wheel kids bike. It has a Shimano 6 speed freewheel and a
gripshifter. In the photo the Saddle Height is 460mm, and the standover is
540mm. The clever crankset allows you to run the pedals at 120mm crankarms
or 140mm. The suspension fork is essentially rigid. An adult can get it
to compress. The V-brakes and short reach brake levers work well. In the
photo there is a long tall stem. The stock stem is very stubby and I have
that as well.

I'm looking for a local pickup or delivery in the Bay Area. If you need it
for free, fine, it's free. If you can afford something, make a tax
deductable donation to ECHS Mountain Bike Racing (suggested donation
$100). If you want to trade for something, I'd entertain that. Let me

[RBW] Re: Ventile Exploration

2017-10-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
Much like wider tires, more supple tires, steel bikes, higher handlebars,
and longer chain stays, ventile changes how I think about and use rainwear
and clothing in general on any given ride.

It's a wind shirt, insulating layer (more so if it's cotton analogy), and
waterproof. So pack size is far less a factor than with a synthetic garment
because it can be effectively and comfortably worn far more often. On long
day rides, I no longer take anything but my jacket. Yes, the jacket takes
up more room. I'm fine with that. Remember, though that I ride in the
Colorado Rockies, where we can get all four seasons in an hour, regardless
of what the forecast called for.

Redefining waterproof, for the better. Ventile is waterproof BECAUSE it
gets wet and this swells the fibers and prevents more water from getting
in. It also stiffens the garment. I'm always surprised how quickly it dries
(vs. a cotton shirt, for example) after a rain. But on cool, high humidity
days, it can stay wet on the outside for a long time. This is actually the
garment working properly. I stay dry on the inside, regardless of activity
-- or more accurately I rapidly become dry if my activity level was such
that I was sweating a lot. But the layering under matters. I find far
greater range of comfort wearing fishnet base layer shirt.

All that is to say, Tony, I have no idea how to answer your question,
because ventile is an entirely different way of addressing an outer garment.

With abandon,
Patrick

I recieved a reply to my email from Will at Rivendell. They do not have any

So, my plea for help still stands. I need some quality pictures, .jpeg

Please contact me via pm.

[RBW] Re: Ventile Exploration

2017-10-17 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Question on specifically DV garments, how packable are they? I ended up
wearing my M65 on the ride in this morning (first commute in the 40's here for
me) and this afternoon it'll be 60 and I'll be stuffing it into my saddlesack
medium where it will pretty much fill the bag. I can't imagine the M65 being
particularly good for a long day with varying temperatures it a multi day trip
unless it was truly cold. Also the dry time seems to make it better for
shorter, well defined ride periods (perfect for my commute). I'm curious if
the ventile products do better in packing or dry time.

Re: [RBW] XO-1 frame for sale

2017-10-17 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yeah, it's nuts. But there are certain things that become annointed by some
subculture and then the price discovery mechanism takes on a whole new
wrinkle.

Case in point: These NOS Weinmann levers

sold for less than $20, while these NOS Campy Records
went

for $249. Both drillium. Both shiny aluminium. Do we think the Campys
really stop 10x better? Even in used, abused condition, the Campys will
sell for 5x the price. In fact I just bought a gorgeous bicycle in pristine
condition that, once I sell the brakes and seatpost that came on it and
replace them with ones from my parts box that have almost the same look and
function identically, it's entirely possible the bike will have paid for
itself.

[RBW] Re: Ventile Exploration

2017-10-17 Thread ascpgh
Patrick and Will,

Many thanks for your detailed experiences with your array Hilltrek
garments, both of your insights are helpful to my decision.

I am always concerned when looking at "raingear" that many technical
specifications are purposely overlooked or the item is demonstrated in high
altitude or arid settings which use the physics of the environment to
produce claimed performance. In my use around here (38" annual rainfall,
27" snow) I need breathability or could just cut arm and head holes in the
bottom of a can liner for much less and pretty high resistance/proofness to
water. I can manage some moisture inside by choosing base and insulation
garments appropriately.

Synthetic advancements of other raingear at lower prices have all performed
somewhat as unfinished research projects at high costs, those being crunchy
loudness and service life. I believe the previous is telling of the latter,
any material has a flex to failure specification and the shell materials
dependent on coatings or laminates with a bonded 3D inner surface mesh
liner beg for both increases stiffness of hand and an earlier arrival of
the end of functional performance. Even trying not to pack or manipulate my
last shell, the stiffness of its build focussed flex and movement in wear
at the from of the shoulders, right where you need the shell to hold out
water the most.

Will, I am likely to follow your path to the DV shouldered and hood, SV
balance construction because while I seldom have to cope with the lowest
temps, I can sweat thinking about the next hill and have a premium on
breathability. Side note about pit zips and back flaps on lesser breathing
shells: here in the non-arid, closer to sea level lands they lower the temp
differential across the membranes/laminates and promote condensation on the
inside face of the materials beyond what the lining mesh can handle. A bad
thing if I am using the shell for wind blocking instead of a water
barrier. nothing worse to end up wet on a dry dark morning.

Patrick, I've been quietly following your chronology of experience with
Hilltrek products and Ventile itself. Thanks for being a font of
information and freely sharing. Once again the usefulness of this list over
coffee each morning is more productive than my wife ever thought!

[RBW] Re: Ventile Exploration

2017-10-17 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I was and still am deeply tempted by Will and Patrick's descriptions of the
ventile jackets, particularly the Greenspot.

Regardless I received a very generous gift two Christmases ago of an Alpha
Industries M-65 field jacket, it's a fairly accurate reproduction if the
classic military coat in a 50/50 Nylon/Cotton blend. I've found it to have many
of the same wearing properties that also describe the ventile experience. For
my DC area commute it comes out once it starts to get in the 50's and I haven't
needed anything heavier, and layering underneath is usually pretty minimal.
And I do love the pockets and the long tail. The roll up hood does leave allot
to be desired though it keeps my neck dry in the rain and my Gore helmet cover
different the rest. Another option to consider!

That's bonkers. XO-1s are cool, but that one was left outside for a decade or
two. Crazy money!
