[RBW] Re: New (old) bike day? An Eroica bike

2017-10-18 Thread Evan E.
Beautiful bike, Bill! I love old Univegas and Miyatas. Often underrated, I
think. And any Univega with "Gran" in the name is especially nice, with lug
windows and the like. Sweet Suntour bits, too.

[RBW] Re: New (old) bike day? An Eroica bike

2017-10-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
Bob B asked whether I can fit on it.

Yes, I definitely can. In the photo, the saddle height is set correctly at
75.5cm. The standover is around 84cm and my PBH is around 86, so I've got
a bit of room. The top tube + stem length is about an inch shorter than
any of my other road bikes, so I'm on the lookout for a SR Custom model
stem in 100mm extension.

The seller of this bike had no clue how to determine frame size, and kept
giving me measurements that I was sure were wrong. This model came in a
57cm and a 60cm, and when I pulled the trigger I still was not certain
which it was, but I hoped it was a 60, and it is. This is really one of
those "they don't make them like they used to" bikes. I'm really happy
about it.

Ventile was a miracle fabric when it was first created the RAF to allow
pilots to survive more than a few minutes in the North Sea and it is no
less so now. What a connection you have with it's origins through your

I have to acknowledge an accountant that worked for my dad who had run away

[RBW] Re: Chocolate Spokes

2017-10-18 Thread 'thalasin' via RBW Owners Bunch
Second what Bob said about Gregory. I've known him for years and he is one
of the most decent, genuine people I've ever met. Going into his shop was
a joy, so much so that I often found an excuse to have work done on my
bikes! I too moved away from Denver (in May), and my regret is that I
wasn't able to bring a Chocolate Spokes creation with me.

Brendan did a great job on the film, and that was his bike that you see
Gregory riding! When I saw that bike in person, I very nearly pulled the
trigger, and now I'm sorry I didn't.

If you're ever in Denver, it's worth the trip to stop by the shop. Drop
some cash in there while you're at it.

[RBW] New (old) bike day? An Eroica bike

2017-10-18 Thread Bill Lindsay

There's a category and a classification for everything in the bike industry
now, making it really easy for an N+1 guy like me to invent new slots in
the stable that need (NEED!) to be filled. The latest for me is an Eroica
bike. An Eroica bike is an old road bike, kept period correct, for use in
Eroica events. Reviews of these events are glowingly positive, mainly for
the social aspects of them. I'm a social guy, so if I can get another
bike, and use that as my admission fee to a fun social event, I'm in!

I found for myself a 1983 Univega Gran Premio. There are many many little
reasons why this particular bike appealed to me, and I was able to get an
OK price on it. It came in last night, and it was in such great shape that
I was able to overhaul and service everything I wanted to overhaul and
service and render it completely road ready. So, here's new bike day:

2017-10-18 Thread iamkeith
Remember that Rams had relatively short top tubes - roughly a half cm
shorter than, say, a current Roadeo or Homer of comparable size.

So a 62 ram had a 59 top tube, whereas a current 61 Homer also has a 59 top
tube. And, when you factor in typical tire sizes, the standover height is
1.82cm (3/4") higher on the Homer than the Ram.

Conversely, a 60 Ram had a 58 tt, which is comparable to a 59 Homer.

[RBW] Re: XO-1 frame for sale

2017-10-18 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I wouldn't retire just yet. With the exception of big marquee names &
models with high desirability and low supplies (and a 59cm Bridgestone xo-1
in pumpkin is that) and/or high-end, pristine condition (and even here,
some weakness), my impression is that the vintage market is pretty soft.
Certainly in my neck of the woods this seems to be the case.

Nice. Wonder if the vintage bike market is following the stock market up to
new record high marks? Maybe time for me to cash out a couple of bikes.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Bar "TT" Markings -- ID help

2017-10-18 Thread Bob B
Called HQ--Will was certain they are the heat treated aluminum. That's
cool. Didn't bother to ask what the "TT" inscription means, though.

Looks like they've been mounted before, but barely used. Seem to be aligned
and in fine shape. Will's theory was that it was due to an angry break-up.
My theory is that somehow they wound up on a bike that someone bought on
Craigslist. The new owner, unaware of the joys of Boscos, let alone their
monetary value, swapped them out for some "cooler" bars. Im going to throw
out a guess they were bullhorns, because that kind of person would probably
do that (maybe it was the dude who yelled "nice girls bike!" that one day
as I rode by on my Bosco'ed commuter). Anyway that's just a theory, and
whatever really happened, I hope they're happy now that they purged their
apartment of a pair of huge bicycle handlebars.

Another man's treasure...

2017-10-18 Thread Ryan Fleming
and I would agree that the Rivendells (I have a 97 A/R) are better bikes.
Certainly better cosmetically. I don't think functionally my 97 Riv is
several magnitudes better than the X0-1. The X0-1 is a fine, no frills
bike. I'm glad I bought it and I have no intention yet of flea baying it.
It's a fine commuter and it's fun to ride. Probably snappier than my A/R
but I think the geometry's a little more aggressive

[RBW] Re: Chocolate Spokes

2017-10-18 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Leah ,

Thanks for posting this. The video is really well done. I moved from
Denver late last year but I was lucky enough to meet and talk with Gregory
and I can attest to the fact that he is absolutely one of the best,
smartest and most genuine people you will ever meet. I am not a complete
believer in only first impressions but Gregory is someone who not only
immediately impresses, but deeply impresses. When you meet Gregory, you
absolutely know, in that moment, that the world can work, that the way you
know things can be, people being smart, resourceful, funny, talented, open,
helpful, dedicated that is all possible and Gregory is proof.

His frames are beautiful and though I may be running out of time for such
things, I have always dreamed of having a bike built by Gregory. If I had
stayed in Denver that would have happened, no matter what.

Anyway, a highly recommended shop and person to meet if you ever get the
chance! The shop is not large, and does not have any large collections of
fancy things, but it is a real bike shop and a true resource to the
neighborhood. And they do have an impressive supply of chocolate! I
should have stocked up...

2017-10-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have been out there on a road bike recently. San Francisco Randonneurs has a
mixed terrain 200k out there and I’ve been pre-riding big chunks of the course.
The Marin Mountains 200k was supposed to happen on the 14th but they
rescheduled it to the 28th because of the unhealthy air quality.
