[RBW] 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-05 Thread Philip Williamson
I know nothing about it. The AW ratios Patrick mention, 40”, 52”, 70” sound
about perfect. Try it and tell us how it goes.

I’d use a new AW, not an old one, because the new ones supposedly don’t go in
neutral when they are out of gear. That feature of the old ones is not
excellent.

Re: [RBW] 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Now, why, again, a IGH for winter off road? And why 3 speed instead of 5,
7, 8, 9, 11, 14? I'm all for it, but I'm curious as to your motive.

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, when I was briefly dating a
(Anglo) woman who lived on Bilaga'ana- (that's Navajo for white man, and
I'm half that) -accessible but Cochiti-owned land near the Cochiti (not
Navajo) reservation WSW of Santa Fe, near some wonderful rocky and hilly
jeep track -- this was 1989 or 1990, when mtbs were still newish; her new
DB had just 6 cogs -- I converted a thrift store Schwinn 3 speed into an
off roader by swapping out the 40-something ring for a 36, giving me, with
the stock 18 t ring, roughly 70", 53", and 40" gears. I recall a nice, long
Saturday afternoon ride along a mountain jeep track where for a young, fit
person, these ratios did quite well if you don't mind standing. But the
Shimano -- was it SA? -- hub hardly was designed for this sort of riding;
we crossed what I guess was the same stream half a dozen times, and I
recall seeing water flowing out of the hub once I got through to the far
side. The hub still worked, and I never bothered to strip it or even lube
it, but I daresay that it would not have lasted through many such rides.

Back to internal gears: Sure, a 3 speed will work, for a while at least;
but why not Rohloff? Or, whole hog, one of the new bb-area gear systems? Or
the, as I read, well judged Alfine 8 or 9 or 11 speed hubs? Or a Nuvinci?
Stevie used to sell fat bikes with the NuVinci.

I briefly tried fixed -- 60 gi -- off road, but while going up and even
flat was fine, downhills on 175 mm cranks was horrible, as was trying to
spin on smooth flats with a tailwind. I switched to a 63" freewheel gear.

Late to this and not familiar with any snow riding. If you're willing to have
the canti bosses moved from 700c to 650b, have you thought at all about adding
disc brake mounts instead. That way you could, presumably use both wheel sizes
and have year round good braking. Again, I've only heard that discs are better
in winter, I have no experience with them.

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-05 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Very curious to see how this all turns out & to hear Grant/Riv’s thoughts on
drum brake-ifying the Hunq. Good call keeping the 2nd small chainring plus
spare chain just in case. Do you usually use a chain with master quick connect
links? You may be able to use an extra master link and form a splice section
that could be removed/added as needed rather than a full 2nd chain? May not
save all that much weight/space and master links are easy to lose so may not be
worth it but just a thought if you plan to ride in the larger ring majority of
time anyway where the splice would just be installed most of the time and only
stowed when going into low-low gearing. Hope it all works out for you as
planned.

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
In case anyone is, inexplicably, following along at home, here is my plan after
a weekend of web surfing research, following my general approach of when in
doubt, simplify, that’ll teach you a LOT. So:

Shift the Hunqapillar to 650b Sturmey-Archer 3-speed Dyno and drum brake
wheel-set, geared essentialy equal to my Quickbeam low and high. I’ll still
have the Sigurno double cranks, with 24/38 chainrings, so a I could carry a
second chain sized for the 24t inner ring for bikepacking or steeper trails. A
Hunqapillar geared in the spirit of the Quickbeam. Grin.

It ticks all the boxes I’m looking for: weatherproofed drivetrain and braking,
similar gearing to what I have now, 650b conversion to increase tire size and
retain a ride feel closer to the 700x44. OF course my conversation with Grant
and Co. this week may change any or all that. Grin.

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-05 Thread lum gim fong
I think fenders if anything would be dangerous for you Patrick. You ride
off-road a lot and there's a big chance of stuffs jamming your tires.

So I think without the fenders your bikes are at the mercy of the elements and
roadsalts in the winter.

So looks like your options are a good cleaning and lubing regimen or make the
quickbeam the winter bike. I have found in winter that the frame fairs fine.
If anything starts to go first it's the chain and fastener heads. And since the
QuickBeam has less that might be the best winter bike for you.

Of course your winters are on another level completely than the ones that I
live through here in Maryland.

I love my bikes but haven't drunk any cool aide yet ;)

The other frequent criticism is that RBW are overpriced. I have found mine
to be extremely good value for how often I use them. I suspect the haters
spend as much, if not more, on bikes and accessories than I do. Also, a
point that inevitably comes up during these forum wars is that RBW bikes
tend to hold their value better than others. Not that I will sell anytime
soon, particularly since the San Marcos has been discontinued and they no
longer make the Appaloosa in my size.

They are stable, beautiful bikes that are great fun to ride. That is all I
wanted.

What drives me crazy about these kinds of threads on cycling forums is when
people call Riv Riders a cult. If you like a certain type of bike, riding and

And consider this: The people calling it a cult are wearing identical spandex

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-05 Thread iamkeith
Have you considered just buying an additional bike for winter use? In the
end, it might not cost much more, would probably be less hassle, and would
help preserve your precious Hunquapillar by sparing it from harsh winter
riding conditions. Used fat bikes are unbelievably cheap these days. I
see high-end ones going for well under $1,000 on a regular, if not daily,
basis. Due to a combined effect of several years of market
over-saturation, too many people without real winters buying them for the
novelty which later wore off, the advent of plus size tires that provide
most of the benefits without the drawbacks of true fat tires, and the
normal hype of ever-newer/better standards, they haven't held their value.
And unlike regular mountain bikes, most haven't seen the mileage or hard
riding abuse, either.

Even though I'm still riding an "older" one, and even though the novelty
did wear off a bit for me too, mine is still one of the few bikes I would
never, ever give up. It still puts a smile on my face and It truly did
extend my riding season by 7 months out of the year. I don't think your
winters are too much more mild than mine but, if they are, remember that
you can always use the hunquapillar on "nice" days. Just get some studded
tires and keep the fenders.

Kind of like a Hunquapillar or a Bombadil, a good, rigid fat bike harkens
back to the early, pre-NORBA days of mountain biking when we rode them to
explore and to get out in the woods. But they're a lot more comfortable.
And one of the great things about fat bikes that most people don't talk
about, is that you can ride trails when they're damp without damaging
them.

pretentious. In fact, part of our conversation involved you trying really

RBW did give me the two best bikes I've ever had and has me out riding

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubeless Maintenance

2017-11-05 Thread Patrick Moore
As I said earlier, my own experience with Stan's is that, when it dries, it
does form little rubber marbles or octopuses or boogers, what have you;
this both in tubes and in tires without tubes. In one tube, ridden for 12
to 18 months with Stan's added initially but not thereafter (sealant seems
to last much longer in tubes than in thinwall, tubeless tire casings), I
finally got a thorn flat that pumping and spinning wouldn't seal; so I
replaced the tube with the spare, thinking I'd add more sealant to the
flatted one when I got home.

Upon closer examination, at home, I discovered that the Stan's had dried
into a bolus gathered near the valve. So, I tossed that tube.

Orange Seal, OTOH, seems not to produce such boluses when it dries. I've
not examined a tube that has contained OS for 18 months -- I've just been
riding them and waiting for the flats that don't seem to occur or, at
least, can be solved by pumping and spinning -- but again, when I opened my
tubeless F Fred after the first year of OS, there was naught but a very
fine film coating the innards of the casing.

So, upshot: You really don't need to do anything, as long as you don't mind
rubber marbles inside your tire; they don't weight much at all. OTOH, again
IME, Stan's will form those marbles, so that there will be, or may well be,
something for you to actually remove, if indeed you decide to go into the
trouble of opening up the tire.

Let us know what you find, if you do so!

[RBW] El Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Racing team fundraiser

2017-11-05 Thread Bill Lindsay
As many of you know, I'm the volunteer team mechanic for the local public
High School Mountain Bike team. We're a 100% self-supported team, with no
school money paying for our activities. The League we race in is called
Norcal: https://www.norcalmtb.org/ We race in the southern division of
Norcal, against teams from Berkeley, Albany, Oakland San Francisco, and the
Monterey Peninsula. The Marin teams are all in the Northern Division. In
our division, the races are dominated by Salinas High School. They have a
huge team, and are very well organized. Last year we came in 2nd place
right behind Salinas, and were able to beat both Berkeley and Albany, with
our smallish team of ~16 riders. This year our team has grown to nearly 30,
and we only have one or two seniors, so we are definitely on the upswing.
Our team has a higher percentage of scholarship riders than most, where we
provide bikes, equipment and registration fees to a significant number of
our riders. We have a few rising stars in the league and think the Salinas
Cowboys might start to hear footsteps...the footsteps of the El Cerrito
Gauchos.

My own personal contributions to the team are in the form of time and
money. I'm the 'on-call' mechanic for all the kids, helping keep the bikes
in good repair and helping the kids learn how to maintain their own bikes
and do trailside repairs. I also maintain our loaner fleet of race bikes.
My big new activity was to build and equip our race day tool board into the
door of our team trailer. I took about $500 and a couple days out of my
sabbatical to build this up, and I was really proud of the results. TEAM
TOOL BOARD

Now, on race days, I won't have to strip my own tool board bare and throw
it all into a duffel bag.

Being a volunteer working with these kids has been kind of a fountain of
youth experience for me. It is really great to be around high school
athletes that are super supportive of one another. Mountain bike racing is
one of those precious few sports where boys and girls are all on the same
team and all contributing, and I treasure that race day atmosphere and
watching the kids gain confidence in their abilities. They inspire me more
than I could have imagined.

Today is our one big fundraiser. The kids are doing a spin-a-thon event at
Cyclebar in Berkeley. The kids were all encouraged to sell 'sponsorships'
that go towards a raffle for some local prizes like A's tickets and other
stuff. I plan on throwing a donation into the pot, independent of the
raffle stuff. If any of you feel so inclined, and you want to grow the
size of the donation I make to ECHS Mountain Bike Racing, you can paypal
money to my gmail: tapebubba ...at... gmail. If you want our tax id
number, let me know. This RBW Group helped a ton in helping pay for our
trailer last year. Thanks, and Go Gauchos!

P.s. I realize the Schwalbe delta cruisers are not likely the best “all

plusher rubber that the currently maxed 700x32 and may even have room for the
even plusher col de la vie 650a/590 tire (40mm I think)

Re: [RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-05 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Genuine concern and not just playing devil’s advocate... but is it possible for
many caliper/canti designed forks to lack strength or lower blade reinforcement
for the lever arm of drums (similar to the way discs could overpower and
crumple some forks if not made with discs in mind) ? Clearly not an issue with
the Guv’nor that’s designed around them but maybe so for other bikes/forks?

I had questioned a similar conversion on my single speed although took a
different path to get there:
It started with the discovery of toe overlap on the 700c single speed combined
with a new (to me) old Raleigh frame that was intended to just be bigger frame
to move the whole build over from a much too small 21” Raleigh sports 3 speed
with 26 x 1-3/8 wheels. The measurements were a little suspect from the ad but
pics confirmed a very large Raleigh 3 speed frame with locking fork as on the
Superbes... but it was labeled “Deluxe” and listed as 25” frame. Turns out the
bigger frame is actually 25” center to center seat tube and with a much longer
fork than the Raleigh Sports and takes a 700cx35 easily with tektro 559 xlong
reach brakes. It’s close in stand over to my Schwinn 27” framed bike with
700cx33. So I have these practically new cream delta cruisers in 26x1-3/8 size
that were supposed to be for the bigger 3 speed project but I now have other
plans for that with the Raleigh Deluxe frame also already having dropouts that
take modern 9mm front and 10mm rear axles rather than those of my original
Sturmey Archer aw rear and dynamo front of the sports.

So back to the 700c singlespeed... tire clearance is max at 700x32 rear with
539 tektro brakes 47-57mm reach. A little more wiggle room up front but not
much and no fender clearance. Harris Cyclery offers a 26x1-3/8 fixed/fixed
budget wheel with sun cr18 rim and sealed hubs with 120 spacing for conversion
of old 3 speed frames but this would be an immediate fit on my single speed.
But the matching front has an axle to match the thinner axle of the old Raleigh
hubs/forks and wouldn’t fit my modern 100mmx9mm fork. So I instead consider a
custom front with new SA drum brake hub with cr18 rim to match the harris stock
fixed rear wheel. This eliminates calipers altogether and with the frame
having no cable stops for rear brake cabling anyway if running fixed only and
drum front it would be a suitable all weather rig now with room for fenders
with the smaller 650a/590bsd/26x1-3/8 wheel vs the 700c/622bsd. I never
followed through due to budget constraints and poor timing for any new projects
and then began to question whether the fork is built to withstand the localized
forces of a drum brake anyway? This is the stock fork on a Milwaukee Orange
One. The frame is tig’d by Waterford but the fork is imported from Taiwan and
otherwise appears to be the same spec as a Surly Pacer fork but not sure if
they are really the same.

Anyway... Love some of these ideas but haven’t brought myself to try them yet
and in the interim just riding what I’ve got.

Cheers,
Brian Cole
Lawrenceville NJ

Re: [RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the name change. It does make it easier to address a particular
remark to a person.

Regarding wheels: a 700C wheel with a 44 m tire will be just about the same
diameter as a 635 wheel with 38 mm tire, at least according to Jim's trail
calculator. I rather think that Guvnor with the Snoqualmie Pass extra
lights might be a very wonderful ride.

Dave, I swear to myself I'll not make an offer for it, but come 2018, and
my tax money set aside, and various other expenses, plus some savings
(???!!!) in place, and you still have it -- I dunno. I really wish I could
test ride one.

Back to drum brakes: I had a Worksman tricycle that had a front drum, and
it worked alright; certainly as well as the cheap calipers or V brakes or
cantis that generally come on a bicycle of the same quality as that
tricycle; but I've been very tempted to try another bike with drums.

valve in a solid globule). One more reason for preferring Orange Seal.
