Re: [RBW] Re: Soma Supple Vitesse

2017-11-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like my Vitesse. I have the 700 x 42. Previously this bike had the
Compass Barlow 38s. I would agree that the Compass ride a little
better--and room for fenders. For me it is handling. That may be a function
of the width taking the bike geometries into an area that starts to
slightly degrade performance. Who knows. Good tire though, and it looks
nice.

2017-11-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a set of Atlas 650b on my Clementine. They are certainly up to the
tasks you describe. I've taken them off road, hauled my kid on his Burley
Picollo, loaded 40-50pds of groceries, etc. I did hit a massive pothole at
night at speed that put a dent in the rear, but was able to ride home. I'm
pretty sure a lesser rim wouId have faired worse. I am also 175. I like the
classic look. If that's not a big deal, maybe you want the extra width of
the Cliffs. But it's never been an issue for me.

I once read but never heard repeated that the Bleriot name and decals were
conceived as a travel bike (S maybe?). Rivendell had the art ready to go and
it ended up on the Riv+QBP bike. It is a good name for a bike but a GREAT name
for a travel bike.

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I overlooked the simplest answer. I just
assumed that the ones on their website would be the only ones they had
left. I'll call them today.

Also, what bike did you put them on? Are you liking them so far?

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar for bikepacking

Patrick I've enjoyed alot of things you've shared over the years but this;

"Framebags do force the use of ultralight gear because they do not carry
much. You will get all four seasons, sometimes within an hour, on the
trail. Ultralight gear is wimpy. It will fail, and in circumstances less
than ideal that pushed it beyond it’s frail capacity. It must be babied to
last. I carry expedition weight gear for what gear I carry. It allows me to
be confident and comfortable no matter what. Here’s the basic setup I’ve
settled on:"

... hit a chord with me. A very confidant an ringing endorsement for alot
of the style gear I enjoy as well.I have been appreciating the framebag
that came on my Jones and contemplating a half frame bag for the Saluki in
the future but I would struggle to make it my primary bag on most commutes
and definitely for any ride that involved hauling stuff (even coffee would
be a challenge though I did see Pondero successfully demo coffee out of a
half frame bag a month or two ago!)

Mike I love the barsack/wald basket mounting and your approach/offer on
bike luggaging.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar for bikepacking

2017-11-22 Thread Tim Gavin
Or you could change the brake hanger to a fork-crown mounted one
.
That should keep the cable and front bag from interfering.

With a Hunq, I'd recommend a small front rack like the Nitto M12
,
which is cheap (for Nitto) and mounts to the canti posts. VO's Then you
could use the front bag of your choice. The Surly Porteur House

is a widely available (and cheaper) option, or there are plenty of options
from wonderful small shops like Ruthworks
, Swift
,
Treetop , Ironweed
.

Personally, I like the Revelate Sweet Roll (and Salty Roll; I have one of
each). They are versatile to mount (drops, flats, or Jones bars) and
surprisingly capable; I carried a >10lb load (tent, mattress, sleeping bag,
junk) in mine once and the handling was not bad. I especially like the
accessory pocket to add on the front.

But, I like these Revelate solutions for bikes that lack front mounts, like:

   - my gravel bike (plastic Foundry Auger, which at least has fender
   mounts)
   - or my fat bike (Cannondale Fat CAAD, which has an aluminum fork but
   lacks eyelets).

Hi Ed,
If you'd really like to use the Sweet Roll (or similar), V-brakes would be
fine. (V-brakes would require appropriate brake lever.)

Good luck on the trip!

[RBW] Re: Casual Observations on Japanese Metropolitan Area Bike Transportation

2017-11-22 Thread Takashi
Nice write up, Bob.

I lived in urban Chiba about 10 years ago, and I sometimes met entitled
cyclists. I often quarreled with them since I refused to yield to such rude
cyclists.
I now live in rural area of Nagano where I meet very few cyclists, but when
I visit Tokyo, it seems that cyclists are politer these days than before.

In case you missed, there was a good article in Jan Heine's blog:
https://janheine.wordpress.com/2017/10/28/city-cycling-in-kyoto/

And, if you want to get a Riv step-through, you should definitely do so.
And post pictures here.

[RBW] Hunqapillar for bikepacking

2017-11-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
Awesome trip you have planned! Fantastic!

I prefer panniers and have ridden sections the high altitude sections of the
GDMBR (which is 99% back roads), as well as large sections of the Colorado
Trail and the Colorado portion of the Divide Trail (mostly single track) and
ground clearence is a non-issue created by the marketers of frame bags. Think
about it: if your panniers don’t go lower than your pedals and don’t stick out
farther than your legs, you’re golden. I crash through gnarly willow and
bracken overgrown on trails often. I love my hearty Sackville Toursacks (Back
of Bike Bags now). They don’t care what they rub into. Frame bags are great if
that’s what you want. They DO keep weight central to the frame, but that is
close to a non-issue compared with how panniers carry, when properly mounted
and loaded. For reference I haul up to 80 pounds of groceries at a go and
bikepack with 50 pounds incl. food and water.

Framebags do force the use of ultralight gear because they do not carry much.
You will get all four seasons, sometimes within an hour, on the trail.
Ultralight gear is wimpy. It will fail, and in circumstances less than ideal
that pushed it beyond it’s frail capacity. It must be babied to last. I carry
expedition weight gear for what gear I carry. It allows me to be confident and
comfortable no matter what. Here’s the basic setup I’ve settled on:

Hunqapillar with rear panniers, a saddlebag that leaves room for my tent,
sleeping bag, and pad on top of the rack. Works brilliantly.

Gear:
Hilleberg Akto Tent
Wiggy’s sleeping bag (either his summer bag with a vapor barrior liner if
needed, or the heavier zero degree)
Mesh long johns (these allow the use of any insulative layer and are amazingly
brilliant)
Insulative layer (boiled wool knee socks, flannel shirt, down jacket, boiled
wool mittens and hat)
Wind/rain layer: ventile
Stove/fuel

The gear I have is all heavier than an ultralight setup. But it handles wind
rain (horizontal or otherwise), hail, snow, and because I wear minimal clothing
and bring no extras total weight is quite low.

Things to learn before you come (if you don’t know already):

— food care in bear country
— layering of clothes, what makes it effective and how to manage it wisely.
— wise firebuilding and management (if you are using a firebox) and clearing a
safe place for your stove.

You can see my set up here:

With abandon,
Patrick

Ground clearance will not be an issue on the GDMBR. The VAST majority of
the route consists of gravel roads.

[RBW] Re: May be a dumb question but if you've shortened your bars once can you do it again?

2017-11-22 Thread Les Lammers
Presently, I have a 120mm stem on the 55cm Cheviot that has a 59.5cm
effective top tube and have not trimmed the bar ends. Using Paul thumbies
but I will change to the IRD stem mount shifters to clean up the bars. This
is my first 'upright' bike and the varied hand positions of the Bosco bars
are working for me.

What do you mean by twitchy feeling?
