[RBW] Big cassettes/Do I need a wolftooth roadlink or similar

2017-12-17 Thread drew
Ok, here are the ordered parts:
pairing a 9 speed 11-40t cassette with a riv silver double crank and an xt long
cage derailleur.

Should I be using a roadlink sort of device? Is this knowable without trying
first? If I do try, what should I be looking for to tell me if I'm good or if I
need a roadlink?

I'll be riding it (and my new Cheviot) in Riv pants, Riv shirt (Pletscher) and

[RBW] Re: Frank Jones, latest Knothole post

2017-12-17 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
You can ride fixed, but since there's no coasting you have to be careful
about clipping pedals. With a 75 drop (track bikes have 60, commonly) and a
wider-than track cranky (presumably) there's more risk. That is hugely
abated by the larger tires--which more than makes up for the increased
drop. But as a maker - designer, I am always concerned about somebody
putting on a high Q factor crank, 700x22;s, wide pedals, and pedaling while
leaning over speed bumps. Then that person crashes, blames us, we get sued,
party's over.

If all that makes sense and you still wanna ride fixed, it'll be a better
fixie ride than a normal fixie bke, I'm pretty sure!

53cm has 54.4 top tube, by memory. I don't want to re-look it up now.
Friend's on his way, we're going out to play. (And I hope my dissing of the
importance of the length of a top tube without regarding the other
variables that affect how much you have to bend and reach... is legendary!)

Oddly enough, I've been thinking about a Haul-A-Day to replace my
Xtracycle, only because of worsening back issues and nerve pain. The high
step-over and weight of my stokemonkey equipped Xtracycle at is not as easy
to deal with as it used to be.

Sorry to extend this non-Rivendell thread! ;) As mitigation, I do have a
giant Wald basket and small safety triangle (purchased from Rivendell)
which I will transfer to the Haul-A-Day (if I get one, that is.)

[RBW] Re: Frank Jones Sr details

2017-12-17 Thread William!
>From what I’ve read so far, FJS sounds like it is going to be somewhere
>between a lovely bike to own and an instant classic.

I love the blend of old and new lugs, the way it showcases innovation on an
“obsolete” technology — and (why not?) some lovely fillet brazing to boot. All
the single speeds I’ve owned are do-what-you-can conversions. I love that FJS
has been designed exclusively and thoughtfully for one cog and all it
represents (extra long dropouts, no pump stop, cables stops on top!). All with
the ride quality, practicality and smart looks of a Rivendell. Doesn’t hurt
either that I’m one of the odd ones out who still prefers drop bars...

To summarize: .

[RBW] Re: Frank Jones Sr details

2017-12-17 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
There's new info there, but no full drawings. The chainstays are long
enough to easily accept a 38 tire moving back and forth, and probably with
a fender if you can finagle it (it's possible, as long as you don't insist
on supreme "fender lines" throughout the range). The seat- and head tube
angles are what anybody who knows our bikes has come to expect--shallow
seat, moderate head---and the fork rakes balance to the head tube angles
for handling the way we like it. The drop, the same as on Roadinis.
Tailored to road use, not steeply banked tracks. Two bottle bosses, eight
dropout eyelets, midfork and high rack mounts, split cable stops at 11:00
so you can shoulder it cyclo-cross style and bound up the train station
stairs. We overthought it in a typical way, as both a matter of pride and
reputation, and to avoid shame and angry customers. I think at least by now
there's more tech-numbers on the FJS (with an availability quotient of less
than 30) than you'll find on most bikes made by the tens of thousands.
And...the neat thing is—it's Rivendellish people who know and care enough
to ask!

[RBW] New Lugged Bike Builder of Note

2017-12-17 Thread Addison Wilhite
Happy Sunday morning all,
I shared this on the ibob list but it later occurred to me that I should
share it here as well. A friend of mine has been apprenticing with Roland
Della Santa for a few years and has just unveiled his first bike. He built
it for his father for his birthday and it's a stunner. It's been fun to
see Jake work with Roland because he has pushed Roland a bit beyond the
Italian race bike model, with some wider clearances and more practical
designs. My last DS was pretty much built by Jake and some of you may have
already seen pics of that. Jake has what I think might be the only lugged,
adventure, mountain bike, Roland ever made.

Anyway, here is Barrett #1 with lots of pics. We had a little event at the
Dropout Bikeshop here in Reno for the Reno Rambler Cycling Club to unveil
it. Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] Re: Found Upright riding worse than drops riding.

2017-12-17 Thread Addison Wilhite
I hadn't really thought much about this until this thread came along but it
occurs to me that I've had my Allrounder in all sorts of configurations
with drops and mustache bars, but about two years ago I converted it to a
more upright cruiser albatross with racks to transport stuff thinking it
would be more of an errand bike for groceries and such. My riding time on
that bike has dropped drastically. I think that's telling me I need to go
back to an earlier cockpit. It seems like in retrospect the most fun
builds were fattish tires with mustache bars but the more practical option
was drops and more touring oriented. To see those different builds you can

[RBW] Re: Frank Jones, latest Knothole post

2017-12-17 Thread Belopsky
Looks like there are more numbers now:
/quote

Frame sizeTTcm conservative PBH range

48.5 53.564.5-67

51.5 54.4 ! 66.5-69.2

53 55.3 ! 68.5 - 72

55 56.270.5 - 73.5

57 57.572.5 - 75.5

59 58.174.5 - 79.5

These recommendations are rough, loose, and assume a Nitto stem with at
least a 190mm quill. We now stock the Tallux with 225mm, which is probably
too long for the 53cm and smaller. With the Tallux on the smaller bikes,
you won't be able to get it even level with the saddle. I'm not
computer-modeling any of this, sorry, but it's pretty close to right.

/end quote

I assume that by PBH he means seat height?
The 53 is looking mighty good, but the 55 may work as well.

How does Rivendell typically 'measure' their frame size? Is it bb center to
[theoretical] top?

[RBW] Re: "We’ll have “classic” single speed frames again...."

2017-12-17 Thread Corwin
The production run of Quickbeams seems to match the suggested size
recommendations. My PBH is 88. Saddle height is approximately 78 cm. My
Quickbeam is a 62cm frame. When I test rode the Qucikbeam at Rivendell in
late 2004, Grant said I could ride a 60 or 62 cm Quickbeam - exactly as the
table suggests.

[RBW] Re: Found Upright riding worse than drops riding.

2017-12-17 Thread Corwin
I also concur - upright is less desirable than drops. I have two bikes with
drop bars and two bikes with "original" mustache bars. On one of those
bikes - a tandem - my wife rides stoker with albatross and I captain with
mustache. I get minimal power from my legs in an upright posture. Just does
not work for me. So much so that on my Rivendell Custom, I added the
requirement that the bars be 3 cm below the saddle. When I test rode the
bike, we started with the bars and saddle level. Kept removing spacers from
the stem till we got the bars down to just above the headset.

The threadless fork steerer still sticks out about 3/4 inch above the stem.

I get incredible power from this riding position.

Namaste,
