[RBW] Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-07 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Yes. Riding can be a lonely business.
But I like riding alone.
One gets to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation better when not talking and just
enjoying the sights and smells and breezes and sounds. Intoxicating.

[RBW] Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-07 Thread J Imler
I do my best to ride my bike vs drive, mostly because riding is a lot of fun
along with personal and enviro benefits. In the last six months I've put 2,000
miles on my car. I'm shooting for a sub 5k year. We'll see.
The thing that strikes me more and more is how few people ride in my town and
how enclosed everyone appears in their cars. I feel like I'm sticking out like
a sore thumb. There's a quote I like, the one that says be the change you wish
to see in the world. I feel I'm living that out when I decide to ride vs drive.
Today there was some enjoyment and connection between myself and the drivers
though. Several waved and smiled, like they wanted to be riding too. That made
me feel good.
I'm sure every place has a different cycling culture but can anyone relate to
what I'm talking about?

I just ordered one of the blue bar sacks before they were all gone. I sold

Anyone have a lonely rack lying about?

I have some 700c Rich-Built wheels lying about that I could trade. Or pay

[RBW] Frank Jones Senor on the BLUG

2018-02-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Thanks, Philip! I broke down and put my Nitto rear rack on today cuz, well, it
was there, and I have bags for it. It kinda defeats the stripped-down vibe I
was going for, but it sure was helpful for a shopping run today.

I can't say enough about the 2-speed setup. I'm a notoriously lazy rider, and
have a bad habit of downshifting at the first hint of hill or wind. With this I
just grind out the big ring without a thought of gearing or effort until it
becomes painfully obvious that I need to grab that granny. I think this is
going to make me a stronger, faster rider..plus it's fun!

2018-02-07 Thread Ben Miller
My apologies if I butchered your words, Bill. I'll be more careful in the
future ;) You are correct, there is no way that the Roadeo could fit 44's.
The 38' are very tight as is. Probably not recommended and that's why Riv
lists 35's as max.

I'm currently laid up with a broken leg, which is keeping me pretty
immobile. (Not a bike accident) So, getting the bike down to take a picture
is out of the question at the moment. As I recall there is about 1.5 mm of
clearance (41 mm gap at chainstay). But, to not totally leave you
wondering, here is a few pictures of the
bike https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd3t8J1hh0b/?hl=en

Hey Philip,

— Nae, I took no umbrage to “ghetto tubeless.”
— I had no idea an invitation to expand knowledge was a statement that I was

Pit to pit
Bottom of collar seam (ie where collar is sewn to body) to tail
Arm length: pit to end of sleeve?

I may be interested if it's not too big.

56cm version of the Clem Smith Jr.; 700c wheels like the 59, but perhaps

I know that the Clem was conceived as a 'beater' bike of sorts, but why
shouldn't the bike I ride 75% of the time be my nicest? If/when I do a
custom, this is likely what it will be. I've been thinking about this a

[RBW] Re: FS: Sakae 1-inch threadless "Herse-style" girder stem

2018-02-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
If the steerer clamp is not 25.4mm then what is it? "1-inch threadless
stem" certainly suggested to me that it's a stem to fit a 1-inch threadless
steerer. If it's a stem to fit a 1-inch threadless steerer, then it
definitely should be 25.4mm.

[RBW] Re: Design your custom

2018-02-07 Thread Ryan Merrill
I'm still on the fence with the long chainstays Rivendell is making just
because I haven't ridden them yet. I have high hopes for my coming
Appaloosa though, so I will reserve mention on the chainstay length.

What I really want in a custom is a canti post mixte frame that can take at
least 2.2 inch tires and haul my butt around on fire roads, gravel trails,
and singletrack mtb trails (the more buff kind, not the dh course at
worlds) I'd actually rather have 29 er wheel size, but that is because all
my current mtb's are 29ers and I get along with that size really well on my
local trails. I'm a rather short dude, rode a 53 Roadeo, Atlantis, and a
48cm Hillborne and they all fit me well so if it turns out 650b is the
better choice I will happily go with that...Grant would have that decision.
I would not want 26" tires though...that size is dead for mtb now and tire
choice is limited. It will only get worse in the future, unfortunately. I
would also like the wheels to be tubeless because that is what I run when
trail riding. I used to have numerous flats on my tubed tires until I went
tubeless; now flats only happen maybe once a year. Plus, lower tire
pressure without worrying about pinch flats. It's a total win.

The reason for the mixte frame is standover height. Sometimes you just got
to plop out of the saddle onto the ground on the trails and it's always
better when there isn't a bar to come in contact with. Plus, I don't, and
have never owned a mixte. I need to remedy that. Canti posts because
v-brakes and cantis are more powerful and easier to deal with large tires
compared to sidepulls.

I would want the fancy lugs, Rivendell downtube decal, and that awesome
headbadge, just because they are really nice looking. color - first choice
would be a really nice looking purple. Second choice would be some sort of
butterscotch.

The silver low double crank Riv has would be a great crank to use on an mtb
focused machine.

Bars? Maybe choco moose bars or just the bullmoose bars. Either one would
be fine.

paul brake levers, brakes (touring cantis or even motolites).
Shifting...man, index shifting would be helpful with the ridiculous rolling
hills we have locally. If I can get it to work with indexed in the back and
friction for the front I would call that a win.

Re: [RBW] Re: Design your custom

2018-02-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I agree that 650B makes a great deal of sense with smaller frames.

I have been thinking of a bike for that (talked about *ad nauseam*) AM hub,
and dithering whether I want 26" wheels or 700C wheels. Perhaps it would be
an opportunity to try 650B for the first time.

Oh no! I've just made the decision more complicated!

Seriously: 650B is on the table. I'll bet that, if it is built, it will be
the first 650B AM hubbed bike in the history of the cosmos.

Where does this leave Cinelli Pope handlebars?
What about the later copies with revisions? Are they Episcopal bars?
Are Jones bars more aptly named Mormon bars for their quintessentially American

Are track drops on a Pistachio Buddhist bars? Or would that be chopped off

So many deep questions.

'cause I'm not designing from an existing bike, I'm specing my custom. The
Rivendell Mountain used 26" wheels because that's what mtbs used when that bike
was built; now the hot ticket is 27.5, which I like better for ride and looks.
Also there's a boatload of tires available, which looks to be a waning
situation for 26.

Re: [RBW] Re: Houseless Sam Hillborne in Portland, Oregon

2018-02-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Why not? You would reign in references to racist or sexist terms, would you
not? On what basis then do you include other offensive statements published
on list?

Now, the Monty Python reference doesn't bother me, even though I am a
practicing Orthodox Christian who was raised traditional Roman Catholic;
even "Every sperm is sacred" doesn't bother me. But what does bother me is
self-imposed value judges proclaiming onlist.

Either we let everything go, or we apply the same discretion to everyone.
If Catholic sensitivities are to be neglected, then god damn it, let
everyone's sensitivities be neglected.

That statement is just stupid; and stupidity, I guess, the one "value" I
will wholeheartedly mock.

To avoid the furor over this, I think we ought to drop the whole subject.

2018-02-07 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Romanceur is a cool bike, and certainly has some Rivendell inspiration, but
its front end geometry is quite different from the Atlantis. They are both
meant for touring, and can take fat tires, but the Romanceur has much lower
trail than the Atlantis. It is intended to favor front loading. Awesome if
that’s what you want, but really only visually similar to a Rivendell.

p.s. no desire from me for a disc braked Riv (or any other bike except a

one.

Thanks Laing, Yes, I failed to consider the appropriate Imperial/English
diameter and thread pitch. Sorry, did not intend to suggest they are
actually compatible with metric 10mm axle nuts. But it's the 8mm flats I
initially expected the dropout slots to be spec'd for and was very
surprised to find otherwise. Same as my surprise to find the fork spec'd
for 9mm QR instead of narrower 5/16" Raleigh nutted front axles.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam track end (dropout) maintenance?

2018-02-07 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Found it, at least I now know I wasn't making things up but still doesn't
explain my odd duck of a Raleigh frame...

as quoted from St. Sheldon:

"Most Nottingham Raleigh rear dropouts have narrow (8 mm) slots intended
for the flat-sided axles common on Sturmey-Archer and other older British
hubs. This still works with modern Sturmey-Archer and SRAM internal-gear
hubs which have flatted axles. Most other modern rear hubs are 10 mm, some
are even 10.5 mm, so you will need to file the rear as well. Shimano
internal-gear hub axles are flatted, but the *anti-rotation washers*
 place the
flats at an angle to the dropout slots. We recommend doing all of the
filing on the bottom of the slot. This eliminates the risk of making one
side higher than the other.

Dropout spacing on bikes made for 3-speed applications is typically 114 mm
(4 1/2 inches). 5-speed derailer systems usually used 120 mm. Many upgrades
will call for a wider dropout spacing."
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/raleigh26.html

My previously mentioned frame is spaced 114 but already has 10mm slots (and
appears to be original with no sign of prior tampering or repainting)
Fork is narrower than modern 100mm but already spec'd for 9mm QR hubs.
Axle to crown is much greater than our 26x1-3/8 wheeled Sports models.

Appears to be late 70's and LBS suspects it may have been originally spec'd
as a 27" (630mm bsd) wheeled model based on size/clearances.
700x38 clears the fork easily. 35 or 38 might be max in the rear as
chainstays are the tight spot but some dimpling may help get me up to 42mm
front/rear.

Still have the bottom bracket threading to deal with but may just stick
with a cottered crank for now since I have a spare BB/crank to use but
ideally would modernize it.

Sorry for the diversion but this might just turn into my Poor Man's QB
instead of three speed Resurrectio.
