[RBW] Homer +1 discussion

2018-02-21 Thread Tim Butterfield
I started this in another thread specific to a Homer vs Roadini comparison,
but wanted to open the discussion to include other bikes. That $10 gift
card could get very expensive.

Fitting another bike in our environment is a stretch and I don't really
need another bike at all, especially one that could be close stripped to my
Homer if I stripped it, which the Roadini might be. I wanted a one bike to
do it all when I got the Homer. It fits that role well. However, there is
one role during this time of the year, which it does not fit. It wouldn't
be today, though, because it snowed and I'm not as tough as Patrick.

Here in the PNW, the weather is mostly wet and often relatively cold from
late fall through early spring. During that period, my Homer is stuck
inside on a trainer with a trainer tire mounted. Then, along comes some
weather that is just absolutely gorgeous for a day or two. I could take
the Homer off the trainer, swap tires, go for an hour ride or so, swap
tires again, and put it back on the trainer. Or, I could just get on the
other bike and go. The percentage of ride vs 'renching is certainly better
with having a second bike. That means I'd get to do it more often last
minute when time frees up. That's one thing I like about having the Homer
on the trainer. If I feel like it and have a bit of time available, I can
just hop on it and spin, no wrenching needed. I guess if I practiced
swapping the tire more than twice a year, I might get the time down where
the ratio to swap and swap back isn't too large compared with the
relatively brief ride time.

So, I'm not looking for a bike for any specific role other than available
to ride immediately. Though it can fit many roles, when on the trainer
stand, that is one role my Homer does not fit. For this role, almost any
+1 might suffice. A quick to access local ride would be either something
like a ten mile mostly flat loop or parts of it or a ride into/through town
and back, also mostly flat.

I was originally thinking of maybe the stripped Roadini. But, it has been
pointed out a stripped Roadini is similar to a stripped Homer. Maybe I
need something just a bit different in case I want to trade off in summer
also.

Hmmm. I never really thought of this, but just saw the Frank Jones Sr in
55/57 available, both of which would fit my 83.8 PBH, though both are only
in the same Homer blue I have now. I haven't ridden single speed since I
was a kid. Not having done it for so long, I'm not really sure I see the
appeal of it very well, but I'm open to learning. I'm also not sure if my
out of shape-ness would work well on a single speed, though the mostly flat
terrain immediately surrounding me is good for it. The FJSr frame is more
expensive than the Roadini, but I'd likely save some in component costs.

Any comments on this or other bikes I should consider as a +1 to a stripped
or not Homer would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tim

Ah, Patrick, you're the voice of reason. Thanks for that. As for the rest

Thanks, Ed, for the reminder of the Roadini vs Sam thread. I'll look it up

[RBW] Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-21 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I’m pretty excited for you. If I can’t bring the boys I don’t want to go; so I
needed a bike that could HAUL. I bought my Betty Foy in 2012 when my younger
son was 4 and riding a Trek tag-along attachment. I was all set to get a Sam
(what did I know?) and Keven, listening to me but translating what I really
needed, firmly pointed me to the Betty Foy. Swinging a leg over the top tube is
no fun with a kid in back. You are going to LOVE that step-through frame for
your kid-hauling. My baby is now 9 and I wouldn’t trade my bike. I love it for
its history and because it feels like an extension of me. It’s just so...all
purpose.

I recommend: Nitto Big Front rack, a huge Wald, a Sackville bag for the bars,
and two bottle cages if you have the mounts. Oh, and double kickstand! And a
reflective triangle for your kiddo!
Having fun vicariously shopping for you,
Leah

Damn, that could be a tough nut to crack. We are the low hanging fruit

$100,000.00. Still, anyone who has done business with them, come on, a ten
dollar credit to get them over a hump? It's not a difficult choice.

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-21 Thread Reid
I'm also a big fan of Rivendells and of Grant's philosophy about bike
riding. However ...

It seems to me that the base of cyclists who are tapped into Riv is very
small. We (all of us on this list) buy as much as we can manage (two bikes
last year for myself and my wife). I tend to buy well made stuff, then
keep it and use it for a looong time, which means that I'll need another
new bike in about 25 years. When I have everything I need, I quit spending.
I don't buy and then trade/sell as a hobby, just to try out the latest
models. Nothing wrong with that, but I think that the Riv customer base, in
general, spends to its limits and then drops off to a quieter level.

Unlike the wanna-be racer crowd, we just don't need the latest "New!
Improved!" carbon fiber, spandex goodie every season. I know that I am
actually not going to get any faster by buying a titanium bolt that weighs
1.243 grams less than the steel bolt. Rivs are not made with planned
obsolescence in mind, the traditional way to keep up sales.

Riv needs a bigger customer base. We on this list do what we can, but I
doubt we can save the company. So seriously, does anyone out there have the
kind of marketing background needed to expand the customer base? What Riv
needs in the long term is more buzz and more paying customers. Who can help?

Reid

[RBW] Riv request for store credits

I wonder if instead of 10,000 people spending $10 in credit we couldn’t
organize a smaller group of people (100, 200, 500) to all get a larger amount.
There are thousands of people on this list, right? 200 people getting a $500
credit would get Riv there quickly. I’d be willing. Would it be possible? Would
200 people do it?

Just a thought.

[RBW] Re: Roadini vs Homer

2018-02-21 Thread Ed Carolipio
I have a Roadini set up as a "roadie" (no fenders or rack, and just a small
saddlesack for stuff) and I weigh 215 lbs. Sadly, not a Homer owner (yet)
but I do have an Appaloosa and lots of folks weighed in on a Roadini vs Sam
discussion recently.

Based on that, the "stripped down" part of your question is probably more
important than the "Roadini vs Homer" part. It'll be hard to tell the
difference between a stripped down Roadini and a stripped down Homer, or at
least for most situations we will see, but having a second bike set up that
way saves you the trouble of swapping stuff around on the single bike to
get the different ride characteristics. As for rider weight, the Roadini
doesn't seem bothered with my ... err ... bulk.

Yeah, gone are the days when bike manufacturers would fully chrome a frame

I doubt chrome weakens metal all that much, if at all. I doubt Jan Heine of
Bicycle Quarterly would have had his Rene Herse finished in chrome if that
were true. It is true, though, that chroming is not so environmentally
healthy.

[RBW] Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-21 Thread Drw
Providence or bad luck had it that Rivendell would find a hidden roscoe
bubbe mountain mixte on the same day that i was looking for one on the
group, and then right after i bought it and felt like i was super
impulsive, they sent out the email that made me feel good about spending
money i dont really have today so i added a wheelset to the order...
to, you know keep supporting them.

My main reason for looking for this type of bike is to turn it into a kid
carrying thing for the next 2 years. i feel like the step thru is gonna
make baby mounting, stopping/starting and getting on/off feel much more
stable, OR i always thought these frames were badass and this feels like a
legitimate reason i can convince myself of.

Anyway, i've got a vintage trek mtb that will be donating some parts. i'd
like to set this up as a 1x with a big cassette, which will be a new
venture for me.
heres the list of what ive already got. in my head, i'm thinking apocalypse
s240 baby carriage and i'm gonna do my best to treat the bike unpreciously
(hopefully the lack of lugs will encourage some roughness)

-nitto bullmoose cockpit with thumb shifters
-riv budget 650b wheelset (alex rims and lx hubs)
-riv stock headset, seatpost, bb

I'm looking for recommendations on

-baby seats (and/or racks that work with them if needed)
-other kid bike things besides seats that you found useful that i dont even
know exist yet
-tires
-1x crank and other 1x things i should be considering.
-big cassette

[RBW] Re: Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Ian A
I read one of Tony Oliver's books, mostly about touring bikes if I recall.
I do recall that he was against chrome on a bicycle, the reasoning that it
actually weakened the metal as well as adding unnecessary cost.

I'm going from memory, so I may have misremembered the reasoning against
chrome, but he was definitely against chrome.

I've always liked chrome chainstays and fork tips from an aesthetic
perspective on vintage bikes though.

[RBW] Re: Roadini vs Homer

2018-02-21 Thread Brian Campbell
I think the lighter bike feels different enough to warrant having it. I
bought a used Riv Custom off the this list as a partner to my fendered and
dyno equipped Homer. There is a bout a 7lb difference between them, so not
really a huge difference but the Custom gives a different feel when riding
and I notice it most when climbing hills. More lively. Not scientific but
variety keeps riding interesting.

[RBW] Roadini vs Homer

It's a good thing that 54 Roadini demo is blue instead of grilver or I

I really should not be having this conversation, but thinking of this has

Re: [RBW] Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Brewster Fong
Agree, besides the cost, there's the maintenance. Yes, chrome does require
some upkeep. I recently bought a used Ron Cooper bike with chrome fork. The
chrome fork probably isn't original, but it had a nice layer of rust on it.
Using a stainless scrubber, I was able to remove most of the rust without
damaging the chrome. But, there's still some pitting that can't be
removed.

So yes, you can do it and if you have the money well, it would be
different! However, if you're really going to spend the big $$$s on
chroming a Riv, then you really should have a custom! Of course, YMMV! Good
Luck!

I just bought a bunch (and got email confirmation for each individual $10
store credit). It's an easy call - RBW needs the cash, and they have what
I'll be needing, down the road.

While I'm here, let me also just say how GREAT the new MUSA Can-Tuck-It
shirts are - fit, looks, feel, coolness. The green, especially, has a
shimmering color quality that shifts as you look at it from different
angles. I already have two, but need to get a couple more, for the long
haul. The sizing however, on the website, is all whack... those instruction
would have had me in a M, where the XL is the right size (I went there in
person to try on).

Re: [RBW] Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Eric Norris
You might find someone who will do it cheaper, but if you’re looking for
bicycle-quality chrome plating, it’s not cheap. Here are Joe Bell’s prices,
which include $350 to chrome plate a fork and $500 to plate just the rear stays
and dropouts: http://www.joebell.net/pdf/JB_form_09-17_v2.pdf

Custom plating an entire frame would be prohibitively expensive.

This also means I'll have a very nice condition 60cm green Quickbeam for

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers questions

2018-02-21 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great question, Lum. How much of an answer do you want? Ready? Duck! Grin.

For me, pants create a lot of fabric motion on the leg, which most people never
notice, but which adds to the “noise” my brain has to cut through to function
in the world. Shorts, less so, but can easily be more than knickers. Knickers,
cinched at the knee, allow full freedom of motion with minimal fabric motion
over the skin. Less clutter for me brain to deal with means more, better,
longer rides, and greater recovery and healing over time.

The macro concept that is part of is that we all get a daily allotment of
“brain energy” and we have to stay in the “black” like any wise budget does.
But with brain injury, instea of $10,000, I get $100 per day. And costs are
more (anyone under any kind of stress pays more in daily brain energy costs),
so while a car ride may cost a brain healthy person $5, it costs me $25.
However, riding my bike (and running) increase my daily brain budget by 50%
each day I ride. Fixed gear by 175%. So even with the “costs” of traffic noise,
I usually come out ahead. But I have to save wherever I can. Also, healing and
long term recover only happen when I am in the “black.” When something
overloads my brain and costs me $300 (three days budget) in a few seconds, I am
in debt and need three days to recover. One of the gifts of fixed gear is I can
ride even on some of these recovery (in the red) days, speeding up my “income”
and thus my recovery.

Just remember... you asked. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
