[RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-02-27 Thread Michael Monaco
I set my quick release lever on the front brake caliper to hold the rim
tight when engaged. This prevents the bike from rolling easy to lean
anywhere without fear of falling over. I use the barrel adjuster to take
up the tension, so when I need the remove the wheel, I loosen the barrel to
allow clearance for tire between the brake pads.

Doug Curtlo does custom coupled steel with single color powder at a great

It makes me think of the Bailey Building & Loan in It's a Wonderful Life

Less dramatic than the movies, but the Riv folks have touched many people's

stepped up as they did.

I, for one, would do it again...

[RBW] Re: S coupled Rivendell?

2018-02-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Marc,

I had actually looked at the S site and saw that Rivendell was listed as
an S builder. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense as I
know Waterford built bikes can be spec'ed with couplers and certainly the
customs.

That said, the fine print in one of the charts said nothing about them
doing retrofits, hence the extra research and all. If I did do something
like that, and I suspect I won't and certainly suspect I have no real need,
but it would be a Hillborne (1TT). With that, I figured that would be
considered a retrofit.

http://www.sandsmachine.com/fbplist.htm

Anyway, thanks! Always good to go to the source, in this case S, for
good info. I went there to search for S capable shops near Walnut Creek
and there was Rivendell listed directly. Yes!

Bob

Re: [RBW] How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bill, the quick answer is it matters, and exhaling through the nose as well as
inhaling is the best way. The longer answer involves shedding too much CO2,
leaving the blood low in CO2, which is required for proper gascious O2 exchange
at a cellular level, which is why the body attempts to protect us from over
breathing in the first place by constricting sinuses, bronchial tubes, etc.
Buteyko breathing is a method to treat a lot of breathing disorders, including
asthma.

My experience with my Sam and Rambouillet would support this. The Ram is mostly
Dura Ace with light wheels and feels sporty while the Sam is built to carry a
load. For me a Sam with similar components would probably have a similar ride
to my Ram. I think the Sam invites the rider to load it up with racks and gear
where the Ram does not. I would love to build up a light Canti Sam one day.

[RBW] Re: How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
During the ongoing battle against sore-throatness ...

I came across many odd suggestions (those on the list weren't odd; those I
found online, samples below, often were).

Vick's Vaporub, fondly remembered from childhood. Rub on throat and bind
with scarf; sounds good to me, and I'll try it since I wear scarfs anyway.

But there's a weird subset of the VVR scheme: *eat* a bit of the stuff. No
thanks.

Tumeric!

Tumeric and ginger!

Urine therapy. (You look it up.)

I like this one, 'specially because the Orthodox church is in the middle of
Great Lent, when if I were really serious I'd eat nothing but boiled
vegetables and bread made with only wheat, water, yeast, and salt; and
drink only water. (I do try to go vegan for the 6 weeks, but booze is
vegan, in my book.)
Eat ice cream. Any kind of ice cream product is fine. The most effective
may be a milkshake. No magic principles here. The cold also soothes the
inflamed tissue, easing the pain. It's a great excuse to eat lots of ice
cream!

The current professional wisdom is that flu and colds are caused by viruses
and that exposure to cold and damp and so on makes no difference *in se*.
Bullsh*t. I believe that this is an instance of "science" seeing only what
it's blinkers allow it to see. At any rate, it does not correspond to my
own experience, or that of, apparently, centuries of others' experience,
which shows exposure to damp and cold leading to colds and flu. (I think
that a great deal of what is asserted as "science" is simply blinkered
conventional biases; but be that as it may. Read Kuhn, read Duhem, read
Eddington ("What my net cannot catch isn't fish"), and other intelligent
philosophers of science.)

Yesterday while out on a shopping excursion and first ride of the season

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-02-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
Part of it for me probably hinges on the fact that I'm a mechanic. As a
mechanic, the frame and the parts are the paints and the canvas, andthe
frame. As the mechanic, I'm the painter. The build is the thing, to me.
For exactly the same reason you said: "I wouldn't recommend getting a Sam
thinking it's a Hilsen", I would say: "I wouldn't recommend putting racks
and heavy tires on one bike thinking it's a sporty build". You built your
Sam not to be sporty, so it's not. You built your Hilsen to be sporty, so
it is. If you flipped your intentions, I bet you would succeed.

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-02-27 Thread Dave Small
Hi Bill,

My comment reflected only my opinion that the models ride a little
differently. I own both now, so like you I can directly compare them.
There's not a *lot* of difference between them, but in general I find the
Hilsen to be a little sportier and a little more fun. I have them set up a
little differently, with racks and wider-tougher tires on the Sam, so that
could contribute to the difference I feel but I don't think it explains all
of it. I prefer the Hilsen for general fun-rides and take the Sam for
short tours, although both models could handle both tasks albeit maybe just
a little better or worse than the other, depending on the task. After my
first ride on the Hilsen I told my wife that if I were ever forced to trim
to N=1, the Hilsen would be a strong contender to be that one. I've never
felt that way about the Sam, but I guess I might if I didn't have the
Hilsen.

I remember a thread a few months back on the subject of Sam versus Homer,
with many posters reflecting your opinion and many others reflecting mine.
It was interesting to watch that discussion develop since I had a definite
opinion and so many of the initial responders disagreed with it. I think
it's safe to say that if there's a difference, it's not a big one.

[RBW] FS: Compass Maes Parallel Drop Handlebar 46cm

2018-02-27 Thread Paul G
Folks,

I have a 46cm Compass Maes Parallel drop handlebar that didn't work out for
me. 25.4 center bulge for stem clamp.

I mounted the bar in a Nitto quill stem with some non-aero brake levers to
test it out for a handful of rides under 10 miles, all on the road. The bar
has not had any bar tape or cable tape adhered to it.

There are no discernible scratches or marks except where the stem connects
with the bar at the center bulge. The scratches are from using Nitto 25.4
to 26.0 shims. They are on the surface only and could possible be polished
out since these bars have a bare polished surface unlike Rivendell's satin
finish on their Nitto bars. Some of these scratches are visible just beyond
the edge of the stem (maybe an 1/8" past the stem on either side) but most
of them are to the rear of the bar (facing the rider) and are barely
visible for the most part. The bar is, otherwise, in excellent condition.

$100 including shipping.

Regards,
Paul

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-27 Thread Michael, SF/CA
I actually found it odd that the frames appeared to be "In Stock" since I
knew the made-to-order frames weren't actually sitting in Walnut Creek.
With the change in optics, I would now hope that the 63 Roadeo is on a hook
in their warehouse, and if I were to put the comically-large-for-me frame
in my cart and pay up, I could then hop on BART and pick it up much sooner
than many months later. I do agree that some copy change would make things
crystal clear, but at least this way nobody has the affordance to pull the
trigger on a frame they (somehow) don't realize is 9 months out.

FWIW, Rivendell took my deposit on a Waterford canti-Hilsen on Jan 31.
Expected turnaround on the Hilsen holds at 6-9 months, OK by me as I have a
continuous stream of life stuff to distract me in the next few months.

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-27 Thread Jonathan D.
I suspect as I think Bill alludes to, that Rivendell is in a unique position
because of the number of employees and diverse
product selection compared to a complaint like BMC. Maintaining payroll for 13
employees must strain cash flow whereas some of the competitors don’t have that
pressure.

I assume the custom frames would be low risk in terms of cash flow however
since customers provide the upfront deposit.

I am hoping to hear an update soon on the Hail Mary.

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
There is no question that building bikes in batches brings the price down
and ties up cash in inventory. The easy thing to do in theory that is hard
in practice, is to have a good solid number that represents your absolute
max possible inventory in dollars. For the sake of argument, let's say
that number is 1 million dollars. Any small business that thinks their MAX
inventory might be $1M, needs to keep enough cash on-hand such that their
Current Inventory + Current Cash >= $1M. That way, no matter what you need
to buy, no matter what bills need to be paid, you'll have the cash on hand
to do it. This means you have to have a good ceiling number, you have to
have the disciplne to gather and maintain that right amount of cash on
hand, and you have to have the discipline to never violate your ceiling
number. The bigger the business, the harder that is. A tiny operation
like Black Mountain Cycles does a good job of that. Mike brings in a batch
of frames when he needs them, and always has the cash on hand to pay for
them. He's got a good number, and good discipline, and never scrambles,
but he also only has two models of frame. OK 2.5 models, but soon to be
4.5 models. More importantly, he has one employee, himself.

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-02-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
Dave Small stated that he does not consider the Hillborne and the Hilsen
functionally equivalent.

I respect that opinion but I respectfully disagree with it, as it applies
to myself. I owned them both, both at the same time. I considered them
functionally equivalent, so I sold the "expensive" one and kept the
"inexpensive" one. The inexpensive one (Hillborne) happened to have more
natural versatility because it has cantilever brakes, and greater resulting
clearances. It is definitely possible that I don't have the sensitivity to
detect the differences that others may detect. The geometry is virtually
identical so that contribution to "ride" should be identical. I definitely
did not possess the sensitivity to detect "planing" differences between my
Hilsen and my Hillborne. I rode the Hilsen a lot more than I rode the
Hillborne, because, of course, it was the 'nicer' bike. I detected no
difference in the ride quality between the two. Others more sensitive than
me or who ride a lot more than me might detect something. The Hilsen is
certainly no worse than the Hillborne.

Hey Brian, I just posted more details a bit higher in the thread, in reply

for dirt drop conversions on old mtn bikes. We're going to be doing a MB1
conversion soon. I kinda hate threadless adaptors. Think they look
terrible, and only Nitto, IMO, makes a beefy enough one for off road use.
If you are riding a 65 Clem, you need leather bars!

[RBW] Re: Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-27 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Hey Ben,

Unless you are really tall with ultra broad shoulders, the Leather bar is a
bit much. It's also not heat treated, so it's a big flexy bar that's not
safe for off road riding! All that said, a set of Woodchippers would be
great on the SG, with a 0mm stem. The bike has a long TT, and this would
work really well. The threadless stems are maybe 2 months out, so not too
far.

I put a leather bar on my Hunq, with a super short stem, and took it off
after one ride. It was great on the tops, but the hoods were insanely far
apart, and it was shoulder pain city! Holler about any of the stems you
might want! I just posted a reply to Stephen about the quill options, so
check that out when you get a chance.

Best

[RBW] Re: Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-27 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Hi Stephen,

They're in production right now. We have already have had a bunch of
inquiries, and a few preorders, so we're setting up a presale. Lead time
is roughly 5 weeks. That's an ETA, not a promise date!

Here's the details:

Analog has a few stems currently in the works, with more to come if demand
is there.

The w(Right) stem is offered in either raw or with a phosphoric acid
pretreatment and then a rust inhibiting clear coat. The raw stem (you
could finish it yourself, or let it patina) is $140. The Clear Coat stem
is $185. The clear coat will be done in house, carefully, but all clear
coats will eventually get spider rust under them. Not a bad thing, but be
aware. If you want it to never rust, get it powder coated.

The stem has a 225mm quill length, a Nitto wedge and quill bolt, and
stainless M6 bolts for the faceplate. It's Fillet Brazed in LA, and it's
made of Chromoly. With the clear finish, we'll mask the stem 1cm higher
than the Minimum insertion line, and spray only the exposed part. All that
said, you could adjust the height yourself, by masking the stem and lightly
sanding off the clear coat, to get the stem lower.

Lead time is about 4 weeks for stem brazing production to finish. Once we
have them in hand, we'll finish them and ship them out within a week.
Shipping will be under 10 bucks if it's with in the continental US.

We need a non-refundable deposit of 80 bucks to get one reserved, and once
the stems land at our shop, the balance is due. That should be roughly at
the end of March, or early April.

Let me know if you'd like to get on the list.

*Please specify what options you would like*. If you need help dialing the
fit, or figuring out bars to go with the stem, we're happy to help with all
of that. Enlightened fitting is our whole reason for existing! We can do
remote refits, and have lots of experience doing so. For the record, if
you want lower gearing on your bike, that's another specialty of ours.
Look for an update on our Turkey Vulture gearing soon!

*Options: 26mm or 31.8 handlebar clamp. Clear coat or raw finish. 0mm
extension or 30mm extension. *

If you are interested, email me and we'll get ya set up.

[RBW] Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-27 Thread Philip Williamson
Awesome. I was looking at Peter Verdone’s “hybrid” designs, and realized with
long reach drop bars, you could run a reversed stem with negative reach, and
still get your hands in a good spot on the hoods or drops.

[RBW] Re: Un-Un-Racing update: A Race!

2018-02-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Excellent!! That is so cool that the kids are doing so well, especially up
against the sheer larger numbers of riders, and experienced numbers at
that. Kids are the biggest and most important deal in the whole world and
it is great to hear of them signing up, showing up, and doing the work...
not to mention having fun and growing all at the same time. Very cool...

And, yes, your tool board is indeed epic!

Here's to a great race and riding season... for all!

[RBW] Re: San Francisco/Walnut Creek Trip Report

2018-02-27 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I made my first trip to HQ last June. Simply wonderful. I met almost everyone.
Grant was incredibly gracious. Vince, Jenny and Will all talked and showed me
around. I had Pho at the noodle joint next door and got to ride in Shell Ridge.
Great visit!

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-27 Thread Leslie
The Roadeo only has a 63 in stock, it looks like; otherwise, the rest of
the Roadeo sizes, the Atlantis, A Homer Hilsen, and the Hunqapillar are all
shown w/ 5 or 6 to a 9-month wait time. I'd not thought about the True
Temper side of things, since the Silver tubing should be coming into play,
but, that may be part of the holdup... they may be considering seeing if
Toyo might come back into sourcing, or maybe getting Mark Nobilette to
build them as needed, though that'd be competing against their customs,
too. I don't know any of that, no insider info, just hypothesizing out
loud...

This is possible. TrueTemper is long gone IMO. I don't think my Gunnar
crosshairs has a single tube of TrueTemper

[RBW] Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-27 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne

Hi James, thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed your write up and honestly your
timing of this could not have been better... I kid you not when I say that I
just recently imagined whether a zero reach quill stem with counter sunk quill
bolt and pop top/removable faceplate stem existed or could exist. So happy
to see this in the works!!! This thought came on the heels of wanting a more
elegant solution for converting an old rigid mtb for drop bar use vs a Soma
threadless adapter and 30-40 mm threadless stem after finding my dirt drop stem
was still a little too long of a reach for wide drops. The 26.0 version should
even allow me to try those wide Crust bars on my 65cm Clem!
